Shout It Out Loudcast: Album Review Crew "Fair Warning"
EOn the 48th Episode of the Album Review Crew of Shout It Out Loudcast, Tom, Zeus & Sonny review the 1981 classic album from Van Halen, "Fair Warning." Fair Warning was Van Halen's 4th studio album. The album continued to keep Van Halen as THE hard rock band of the era. The album went up to number 5 on the US Billboard album charts and has gone double platinum. Van Halen is led by perhaps the greatest guitar player of all time, Eddie (Edward) Van Halen. Not to be out done is the preeminent frontman of the 1980's, David Lee Roth. A rhythm section second to none, with Alex Van Halen and his signature drumming and the great Michael Anthony on bass and his acclaimed backing vocals. The album was produced by the legendary Van Halen producer, Ted Templeman. Fair Warning see Van Halen going a little darker than normal, from the album cover, to the opening track, like "Mean Street." The album features two of Van Halen's classic songs like "Unchained" and "So This Is Love?" and many beloved Van Halen deep cuts. As usual the boys breakdown and dissect the tracks and rank the songs. They then rank the album and the album cover against the previous 46 albums reviewed on the Album Review Crew. This was the Tom's pick. So c'mon Loudcaster's give us a break...one break coming up! Ugly American Werewolf in London: Van Halen - 1984
After rushing through their 5th album Diver Down, Van Halen wanted to return with an original album that would establish them as the preeminent hard rock band in the USA. Eddie Van Halen had completed his home 5150 studio which would allow him to develop ideas and work out the synthesizer sounds that he was experimenting with but which had also been shot down by lead singer David Lee Roth and producer Ted Templeman. But Eddie was ready to mix his guitar heroics with the new age sounds that were popular at the time. By mixing Eddie's musicianship with Dave's showmanship and throwing in some MTV, Van Halen became the biggest band in the world! The videos for Jump, Panama and Hot For Teacher were all over MTV that summer and even won them some video awards. But trouble was brewing in the Van Halen camp as not everyone was on the same page. Despite it reaching the highest chart position ever for the band at that time (#2 US) and eventually going on to be a diamond seller (10 million+), Dave would leave the band at the end of the year. But for two 10 year old boys from the suburbs, the magic of 1984 still lives to this day! We go track by track as we celebrate its 40th anniversary! S3 Ep 43Rock is Lit: Soul Music and Southern Roots: Michael Parker On His Novel ‘If You Want Me to Stay’
Welcome to a soulful episode of Rock is Lit. If you’ve got a hankering for that sweet soul music—the kind that echoes with the sounds of Otis Redding, Al Green, Sly & The Family Stone, and Aretha Franklin—then you’re in for a treat. My fellow Tar Heel native Michael Parker is here to talk about his novel ‘If You Want Me to Stay’, a story in which 14-year-old narrator Joel Dunn, Jr., takes us on a poignant odyssey. Joel, Jr., shares the heartfelt tale of salvaging his family in the aftermath of his mother’s departure and his father’s unraveling sanity. From the rural landscapes of eastern North Carolina to the coastal vistas, Joel and his little brother Tank embark on a journey guided by junk food and the soulful melodies their daddy taught them to love. Michael Parker is the author of three collections of short stories and seven other novels, including his most recent, 2022’s ‘I Am the Light of This World’. He is a three-time winner of the O. Henry Award for short fiction and winner of the 2020 Thomas Wolfe Award. Michael has taught for almost 30 years in the MFA program at UNC-G. First Concert Memories #6: U2 Live from Red Rocks with Markus The Darkus Goldman
EOn our 6th edition of our monthly sidecast, First Concert Memories, we welcome our friend Markus "The Darkus" Goldman from 93.3 WMMR in Philadelphia and The Imbalanced History of Rock n Roll Podcast to talk about an epic night in the history of rock music. On June 5, 1983, an up and coming back from Ireland had decided to film their concert at the Red Rock Amphitheater in Morrison, Colorado just north of Denver. However, heavy rains and storms were expected and members of the management and crew didn't think it was a good idea for that day. Many ticket holders were convinced to stay home and the band had to go on the radio to implore folks to come to the show. The show was delayed and opening act The Alarm didn't even play due to the weather. But in the end, the show went on, it was filmed and it changed the fortunes of the band for for millions of members of the MTV generation. Yes, it was U2 that played that night, recording the entire show that would eventually end up on MTV Saturday nights and form part of the live album Under A Blood Red Sky. But the video for Sunday Bloody Sunday would get into heavy rotation on MTV, showing Bono waving a white flag with bonfires atop the natural mountain formation. It made for an otherworldly scene that helped propel U2 to superstar status in the US and set them up to become legends. Hear Markus talk about braving the elements, having security keep him from being crushed against the barrier, his favorite moments and many remarkable memories of a teenager seeing U2 in that incredible setting. Imbalanced History: The Hangover Effect
EAs you'll find out in this week's episode, 2023 has been quite a year for the Rock 'n Roll world, the arts, and for The Imbalanced Brothers! The guys talk about their year in episodes, marking a number of special guests along the way. They dig into the email bin at [email protected] for listener interactions, opinions and ideas from you! That includes this article on The Jaggerz that listener friend Linda Neuman sent to us! The loss of figures in music, art and culture, in general, this year was unbearable. The burden of loss to almost every slice of arts and music life was severe, feeling the sting of Death. The Brothers weigh in from an imbalanced point of view. They finish off '23 with a focus on the 5th anniversary of the podcast in March, the 10th anniversary for Crooked Eye Brewing in February, and what the future holds! I'm In Love With That Song podcast: Jimi Hendrix - "Message Of Love"
It's never a recipe for making great art when you're under pressure to deliver an album to a rival record label due to contractual obligations… though Jimi Hendrix was never satisfied with the result, the Band Of Gypsys album became a very influential album and remains a favorite among Jimi fans and guitar players of all stripes. On this episode, we journey back to New Years 1970 to explore "Message of Love" from this legendary album. Ugly American Werewolf in London: 2023 in Review Part 2 - Concerts, Artists & Legends
Following up on last week's 2023 in Review Part 1: Albums, Authors & Podcasters, now we're focused on the concerts that we covered on the show (and the ones we didn't), the artists & legends we interviewed and reveal our Top 10 Ugly American Werewolf in London episodes of 2023. Thought The Wolf had to leave Amsterdam for his homeland early in 2023, he didn't sell all the concert tickets he bought. He made a trip back in April to see Metallica on the first 2 nights of their No Repeat Weekend Tour. And The Wolf met up in Amsterdam with Action Jackson over the summer to take him to his first ever Iron Maiden concert. It was so great they went to see the boys again in Antwerp and then enjoyed some unexpected encounters at the hotel. Plus our host took The Wolfcub to see KISS one last time. We love talking with the talented musicians who make the rock music we love and we were honored to host an array of great guests from up and coming artists like Jimmy Maddon to legends like Terry Reid and Jim McCarty of The Yardbirds. Talking to Steve Kilbey of The Church was a treat and getting to know rockers in their prime like Scott Holiday of Rival Sons and Oliver Wakeman who we'll be seeing for years to come And stay tuned as we unveil our Top 10 episodes (by download) for 2023. It was a great year for The Ugly American Werewolf in London Rock Podcast and we thank everyone for listening. Here's looking forward to a killer 2024! Ep 173Love That Album episode 173 - Favourite musical discoveries of 2023, Part 2
Welcome to episode 173 of Love That Album. In episode 172, I started my investigation of what were the favourite albums of the year from some great music writers and broadcasters. If you haven't caught up with that one, check out what Brian Nankervis, Jeff Jenkins and Pat Monaghan had to say (as well as a couple of great emails from listeners to the show). Concluding this investigation for episode 173, I speak with Ian McFarlane (author of The Encyclopedia of Australian Rock and Pop) and Billy Pinnell (presenter of The Album Show on EON-FM / MMM-FM). Also, podcast listener (and huge supporter of the Melbournel music scene), Mark Andrew sent me some audio feedback. Once again, get out your pens and paper to jot down some great recommendations to follow up on. I reiterate from last time, I'm grateful to everyone who joined me on the show this year, downloaded any episodes, or told their friends the show was worthy of their time. You're all grouse. This year, I’m giving time to non-Christmas holiday music. Some of it we hear all the time – such as non-denominational winter songs like “Let It Snow”. Others are specific to holidays celebrated by fewer people, though no less cherished & important. There’s about a 100% chance I’m missing some songs, and possibly even some holidays. Imbalanced History: Episode Of The Year: The Story Of Fleetwood Mac
EAlmost every user gets a Spotify wrap-up for the year. Markus & Ray were already leaning towards this episode, originally released on February 6th. Then the year-end wrap-up hit the inbox, and it was a done deal. Funny thing is, The Imbalanced Boys both loved that ep, and were surprised to see it react so well immediately, despite the continued popularity of the band. Coming just months after the passing of The Songbird, Christine McVie may have boosted listens, but really, the Mac just never seems to wane in popularity. So, enjoy this Xmas Day release on your new device (if Santa brought you one), and please tell a friend to listen, as we approach our 5th anniversary as a podcast crew! Ep 112See Hear Podcast episode 112 - A Mighty Wind
When you think of American folk songs of the 60s, you'd think of political injustice, civil rights, hardships due to economic burdens, and war, right? Or do you think about the comforts of food always being laid out on the table, boundless optimism 'cos “its THAT kind of day” or kissing at the end of an optical illusion caused by the dispersion of light in water droplets? 'Cos both work, ya know. Welcome to episode 112 of See Hear Podcast. In 2003, Christopher Guest released A Mighty Wind, the third of his mockumentaries – not counting Rob Reiner's “This Is Spinal Tap”. He had an ensemble cast all highly skilled in improvisation weave the story of what happens when 3 folk groups reassemble for a tribute concert dedicated to their recently deceased manager. Personal frailties, egos, catch phrases, rivalries and decidedly non-issue songs are all focused on in this very funny film. Tim was unavailable, but Kerry and I were joined by her daughter Sarah Fristoe. We debated the accusation that Guest's comedies can be cruel to their characters. We also discussed the songs, the use of Yiddish, the origins of many of the cast members via Second City, and we ask the important question....Wha' Happened? One point of trivia we forgot to mention about art jumping into real life.....supposedly, The Folksmen would be the support act for Spinal Tap on American tours. The crowd not realising it was the same bunch of gents, booed them offstage. I hope this isn't just urban legend.... Many thanks to Sarah for being an enthusiastic See Hearian and bringing great insight to what is a favourite film. You can watch the original Folksmen sketch that appeared on Saturday Night Live nearly 20 years before A Mighty Wind at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3LztVpOOhEY A Mighty Wind is on many of the usual streaming services (or possibly in your DVD collection.....)
