S3 Ep 38Rock is Lit: Music, Mystery & Mountains: The Appalachian Influence in Emily Alice Katz’s Rockin’ Short Story “A Wayfarer at Devil’s Elbow”

In this episode we’re straying from the rock novels camp to talk about a single short story, entitled “A Wayfarer at Devil’s Elbow,” written by North Carolina author, Pushcart Prize nominee, and musician Emily Alice Katz. The story, which appears in the new online issue of ‘North Carolina Literary Review’ was a finalist in the 2022 Doris Betts Fiction Prize, an annual competition sponsored by the North Carolina Writers’ Network, with winning entries and some finalists published in ‘NCLR’. Full disclosure: I serve as Senior Associate Editor of the journal. You can find a link in the show notes to the new issue of ‘NCLR’, where you can read Emily’s story and all the other amazing stories, essays, and poetry in the issue. Emily Alice Katz’s short fiction has appeared in such literary journals as ‘North Carolina Literary Review,’ ‘Salamander’, ‘Jelly Bucket’, ‘Meridian’, ‘South Carolina Review’, and ‘storySouth’. Her short story collection, ‘The Book of Nut and Other Stories’, was designated a finalist for the 2019 Eludia Award. And her short story “Little Hen” is included in the 2022 anthology ‘Frankly Feminist: Short Stories by Jewish Women from “Lilith Magazine”.’ She has a PhD in modern Jewish studies from the Jewish Theological Seminary. Her book, 'Bringing Zion Home: Israel in American Jewish Culture, 1948-1967', was published in 2015. “A Wayfarer at Devil’s Elbow” follows a young music journalist in her quest to locate and interview an obscure 1970s experimental rock musician from the mountains of North Carolina, Nyssa Adcock, who has fallen off the musical map and become a recluse and a bit of a rock ‘n roll mystery. Fans of this period in music history and Appalachian literature and lore will be enchanted by the story, an excerpt from which Emily reads at the beginning of the episode, and our discussion. You’ll also hear an abundance of Appalachian music as well as Emily’s own music. See the playlist below. First Concert Memories #4: Ace Frehley with Sonny Pooni of Growin Up Rock

E

KISS was so important to your hosts, The Wolf & Action Jackson, as part of the foundation of their love of rock n roll, live music and their friendship. That's why they invited Tom & Zeus from Shout It Out Loudcast to come on the premier episode of First Concert Memories, our monthly sidecast, and talk about the first time they saw KISS. For FCM 4, we welcome back Sonny "Hollywood" Pooni of Grown Up Rock Podcast and The Album Review Crew to talk about the first time he ever saw legendary KISS lead guitarist Ace Frehley play live. The Wolf and Action saw Ace as a solo act in the 1990s but Sonny saw him as a co-headliner with Y&T in 1987 and he shares with us how important it was to him to see Ace. Sonny go into KISS during the Asylum era and then learned that KISS used to have makeup and had different members of the band. From there he picked up Ace's first solo effort (aside from the 1978 KISS solo albums) Frehley's Comet and it furthered endeared him to Ace's style. Ace famously has had bouts with drugs and alcohol and Sonny relates a story of seeing Ace fall off the stage as well as why the band was so much better with Tod Howarth than in later years without him. If you've seen Ace recently, odds are you were disappointed as he seems a shell of his former self. That's why we wanted to share some memories from when Ace was still in strong form and delivering solid live shows. Sonny is opinionated and you'll hear all his takes on Ace, the shows he has seen and he even provided a bootleg recording of the show which is an FCM first! All Ace Frehley and KISS fans will love this one! Visit Sonny on Twitter (X) and listen to Growin Up Rock wherever you get your podcasts! The Metallica Report - Episode 14: Week of November 1, 2023

This week on The Metallica Report… Hot on the heels of last week’s Halloween celebration with a special Hammett-horror-episode, listeners report what their favorite fright-night feature film is. We have a couple of nuggets from the recently published in-depth and wide-ranging conversation between Steffan and Lars for the band’s online magazine, So What! As the oft-debated St. Anger celebrates its 20th anniversary, Steff acknowledges that, much like that album, 72 Seasons has entered the world following a comparable stretch of unease and uncertainty. With the benefit of hindsight, Lars compares this era’s ability to accept and navigate obstacles with Metallica’s past turmoil. And with stops in St. Louis and Detroit right around the corner, Steffan and Renée catch up with a few stalwarts of the fan club. Tara Paddock and Kurt Schwarz, local chapter heads of Missouri’s Burnt Ends of Sanity and The Struggle Within Michigan, respectively, are joined by family-favorite Metallica Mom Sarah Sobeck, who has a minivan of international fans joining her and her husband, Pete, on their Metalli-travels. The three share what it’s like to live within the inclusive and supportive global community that Metallica has inspired. Comes A Time: Oteil is Back from Tour and Mike is On the Road Again

In this hilarious episode of Comes a Time, Mike and Oteil dive into stories from Oteil's recent tour, including an epic night where he dressed up as Macho Man Randy Savage. Oteil describes committing fully to the outfit, despite how hot and restrictive the costume was, and cutting promos in character as he made his way through the crowd to the stage. He even had his tour manager Jake come out as Jake "The Snake" Roberts for the full WWE experience. Mike is thrilled to hear about Oteil embracing his silly side on tour. Mike and Oteil discuss the unique acoustics and visual experience of playing the Las Vegas Sphere, a brand new, state-of-the-art immersive venue opening soon. With no on-stage amps or monitors, the venue itself becomes the sound system. They fantasize about collaborating with visual artist Jonathan Singer to create a mind-blowing psychedelic show inside the Sphere. Oteil also shares stories of combat gigs dealing with bad sound, and how veteran performers like Elvin Jones project their sound to the back of big rooms. Looking ahead, Oteil only has one gig on the books for the rest of the year - two nights opening for Bob Weir in Florida. Otherwise, he's focused on spending the holidays with his family. Mike has stand-up shows across the country leading up to the release of his new comedy special "Don't Let Me Down" on YouTube on November 9th. Famous & Gravy: Lord of Horror (Christopher Lee)

He was a physically towering British movie actor with distinguished good looks, a Shakespearean voice, and aristocratic presence. His breakthrough film was the horror movie “The Curse of Frankenstein.” Though closely associated with horror, he maintained that of his roughly 250 movie and television roles, only 15 or so had been in horror films. Even into his 70s and 80s, he could strike fear in the hearts of moviegoers. He played the treacherous light-saber-wielding villain Count Dooku in the “Star Wars” installments, and the dangerously charismatic wizard Saruman in the “Lord of the Rings” and “Hobbit” movies. Today’s dead celebrity is Christopher Lee. Famous & Gravy is created and co-hosted by Amit Kapoor and Michael Osborne. Ep 110See Hear Podcast Episode 110 - The Wrecking Crew

Most working people have that day gig – accountant, engineer, admin, hospitality. The job pays the bills and puts food on the table. We don’t tend to think of being a musician as a day job category. Welcome to episode 110 of See Hear Podcast. Through the 20th century, there was always some group of musicians who had that “day job” status – playing for corporate functions, teaching people to instrumental skills, and being the faceless people providing the grooves and melodies behind your favourite records. Remember the shock you felt realising that the Beach Boys weren’t playing their own instruments on Pet Sounds? Or The Monkees? The collective of Los Angeles session musicians who became known as The Wrecking Crew (via drummer Hal Blaine’s autobiography) provided the music for tons of songs that music fans consider pop pantheon. There were other collectives of course – Motown had the Funk Brothers, Stax had Booker T and the MGs, and there were the collectives in Muscle Shoals and Nashville. Film maker Denny Tedesco is the son of Wrecking Crew guitarist, Tommy Tedesco. In the mid 90s, Denny started making a documentary that took nearly 20 years to make. Financing for licensing rights was a big part of that duration, but in the end, he created a wonderful film that opens a window to the world of that period of time when Sonny and Cher, Frank Sinatra, The Mamas and the Papas, The Ronettes, and The Beach Boys all had one thing in common – The Wrecking Crew. Even if the general public had no idea who Carol Kaye, Hal Blaine, Tommy Tedesco, Earl Palmer or Plas Johnson were, the “name” artists certainly did and revered their work. For episode 110, Tim, Kerry and myself discussed Denny’s documentary as well as our own favourite records from that period, the difference between WC and other famous session groups, British session musicians, social context, and economics. Tim also has an interesting spin on why session musicians may not feel the need to brag about their work……. If you want to catch up on the film, it’s currently available on Beamafilm, Prime and (in October / November 2023) SBS On Demand. Very excitingly, we will be having Denny Tedesco on See Hear in early 2024 to talk about his new film The Immediate Family about another group of LA session musicians from the 70s. If you’ve been enjoying the show, please consider giving us a favourable review on iTunes and let your friends know that our show exists. Famous & Gravy: Dame Detective (Angela Lansbury)

She once said “I wasn’t very good at being a starlet. I didn’t want to pose for cheesecake photos and that kind of thing.” She received two Oscar nominations before the age of 25. In the mid 1950s she found herself cast as either of two types: as she put it, “bitches on wheels and people’s mothers.” She was nominated for a Tony award at age 83, a testament to her extraordinary stamina and range. She captured the biggest audience of her career in the 1980s and 90s, when she played the role of mystery writer and amateur sleuth Jessica Fletcher on the CBS series “Murder, She Wrote.” Today’s dead celebrity is Angela Lansbury. Ugly American Werewolf in London: Thriller - Michael Jackson

If you were alive in 1983, you knew who Michael Jackson was. Not because of his fame growing up as the lead singer of the Jackson 5, not because you loved his diamond selling disco smash Off The Wall but because you lived through the time that saw the release of Thriller. Unleashed on November 19, 1982, Thriller would go onto to become the biggest selling album of all time thanks to a familiar star on the rise, the dissolution of disco & punk, the advent of MTV and some of the most captivating dance moves ever witnessed. The convergence of MTV, Michael's extraordinary talent, Quincy Jones leadership and pop culture becoming a bigger part of life, you'll never see the spotlight so bright on any one ever again. Thriller spawned 7 Top 10 singles in the US, all of which went platinum, 2 (Billie Jean & Thriller) went diamond on their own. The album sold over 100 million units and is triple diamond (30+ million units sold) in the US alone. Michael had really come into his own as a singer and songwriter and Quincy Jones helped gather many extraordinary performers (Eddie Van Halen, David Foster, Toto) to contribute to this amazingly produced record. But you had to see the videos for Billie Jean (light up steps), Beat It (gang fight), and Thriller which had world premier that included a behind the scenes film, the first of its kind. Everytime Michael was on tv, whether we was moonwalking on the Motown 25 Anniversary show or accepting 8 grammys with his shades on, it was appointment television. So to celebrate the Halloween season as this album hits another milestone, we go track x track and talk about how the album made its impression on us and the world in the 1980s. The Metallica Report - Episode 13: Week of October 25, 2023

This week on The Metallica Report… Who better for Steffan and Renée to celebrate Halloween with than The Ripper himself? Our own Kirk Hammett joins the pod to chat about all things horror media, from books and movies to music and makeup. As Metallica's resident horror expert and Halloween aficionado, most know that Kirk grew up loving pretty much everything that could qualify as spooky subject matter. He’s amassed an immense collection of horror and sci-fi memorabilia and has even held his own Fear FestEvils. Now, Steff and Renée dig into some of Kirk’s lesser-known horror-facts. Does he prefer a gruesome guts and gore or a suspenseful supernatural story? Do monsters, creatures, and haunted houses really creep him out? Which films hold up to the books they were inspired by? And just how long is his flight from Hawaii to the mainland? In terms of horror movie length, of course. Comes A Time: Firstman and Steve DeAngelo

This episode commences with a heartfelt prayer, instantly setting a tone of deep introspection and spirituality. The spotlight shines on two distinguished guests: Firstman and Steve DeAngelo. Firstman, an entrancing figure from Jamaica, has carved out a haven described as an "Eco Utopia." In this paradisiacal setting, under the banner of religious freedom, the cultivation of cannabis flourishes. The episode gains momentum when discussing their recent foray into mushroom cultivation, a novelty in their community. Firstman's mission of democratizing this experience, ensuring it isn't the exclusive domain of wealthy tourists, is both commendable and fascinating. On the other hand, Steve DeAngelo, a luminary in his own right, complements the conversation with his profound insights and experiences. Together, they navigate the intersections of spirituality, eco-conscious living, and the transformative power of natural remedies. Whether you're a regular listener or a first-timer, this episode promises a blend of inspiration, education, and thought-provoking discussions. https://www.lucid.news/author/firstman https://stevedeangelo.com Comes A Time Podcast and content posted by Comes A Time is presented solely for general informational, educational, and entertainment purposes. Ugly American Werewolf in London: Rush - A Show of Hands

In thinking about what we wanted to do for our 151st episode, we wanted to talk about an album which we knew very well. In realizing that we rarely do live albums, we thought about the live albums that have influenced us and that we've listened to the most. For The Wolf, that would be 1989's A Show of Hands by Rush - their 3rd live album chronicling their 80s techno-pop stage. Many hardcore Rush and rock fans don't have much nice to say about 80s era Rush as the mid-range usually occupied by Alex Lifeson's guitar was all but consumed by keyboards. Even legendary drummer Neil Peart had MIDI triggers on his drum kit to make more experimental noises. But A Show of Hands does show arena Rush moving from strength to strength with Geddy Lee's plodding bass, Neil's brilliant bombastic, Ales's flourishes and lyrics that had become more timely and more timeless. Covering the albums Signals, Power Windows, Grace Under Pressure and Hold Your Fire (with a couple of older ones thrown in) this highlights a Rush era that may not be everyone's favorite but an important time in their history. And one The Wolf & Action Jackson hold in high esteem. Released January 9, 1989, they actually released several singles which charted in the US and this wrapped up the 80s techno phase before moving back towards the power trio sound with Presto. Only Three Lads - Classic Alternative Music Podcast: Top 5 Three Album Runs

E

Rock, paper, scissors. Three wishes. Life, liberty and pursuit of happiness. Moe, Larry & Curly. We think it's safe to say that good things that come in threes...and that includes albums. But the "three album run" - where an artist/band puts together a string of three amazing records in a row - is rather elusive. This week, we attempt to uncover some of the finest three album runs of the classic alternative era. You know what other good thing comes in threes? Lads. I mean, it is in the name of our show, after all. We are joined by a Third Lad who knows a thing or two about putting together an impressive string of albums, because Tony Jenkins and his band The New Fools have just released their latest in a run of great records, Seashells. With Seashells, the Cambridge, England band has crafted a gem of sparkling pop songcraft, full of ebullient horns, guitar jangle and clever, topical lyrics. Along with delving into three album runs, The New Fools and the new album, we also ruminate on tribute bands, media feuds, children's TV, hip hop, awkward urinal conversations and more. Plus, Tony ruins being the ideal husband for all of us, and we, in turn, just ruin his dinner. Jason Thomas Gordon came up with a brilliant idea. Why don't I talk to some of the best- loved singers, and ask them about their voices? Seven years later, we have The Singers Talk, a mind-blowing book featuring interviews with 75 iconic artists, from Bryan Adams to Thom Yorke. Jason asks the same set of questions to each singer, to understand the various ways they approach the same subject. Now, JTG enters our virtual studio and allows US to ask HIM the same type of questions. All proceeds from the sales of this book go towards Music Gives To St. Jude's Kids.
