Ugly American Werewolf in London: Oliver Wakeman Interview on John Wetton - An Extraordinary Life
Fans of our show know that The Wolf and Action Jackson have a special place in their hearts for 80s prog/pop rock band Asia. While we've spoken with keyboardist Geoff Downes (UAWIL 79) and drummer Carl Palmer (UAWIL 80), we never had the opportunity to speak with singer/bassist John Wetton as he passed away before we started our show. However, there have been many celebrations of John's life and works in 2023 and to tell us more about the kind of person John Wetton was, we've enlisted the great Oliver Wakeman to offer some stories about the man himself. Oliver toured with Yes during 2009-2011 and during that time, befriended John Wetton as Asia was touring with Yes. Despite Oliver being a generation younger and the fact that John had worked with his father Rick, John took Oliver under his wing and they formed a bond that had a big impact on Oliver (and John too). Oliver relates some stories of his time with John including watching him play every night, how John checked in on him as he slated to transition out of Yes and one time John joined Oliver and his band to play Heat of the Moment. Oliver will also give us some tidbits about music he's working on, including his plan to play songs he wrote with Yes on From A Page live this spring at Winters End Festival. Oliver is helping to promote the new box set John Wetton: An Extraordinary Life which is out November 24 around the world - an 8 disc set of his solo albums with bonus tracks and discs full of rarities, unreleased gems and live cuts (more information below). We had a great time chatting with Oliver and hope you'll enjoy our conversation about John, Yes, prog music and more! He candidly shares how the music of the Beatles transcended social and cultural boundaries, instilling a sense of unity and hope during turbulent times, both in the United States and in his own life as a Cuban political refugee. As the conversation seamlessly transitions to Rudy Sarzo's music career, listeners are treated to insightful anecdotes about his pivotal roles in bands such as Quiet Riot and Whitesnake. Metal Mayhem ROC:PICTURES ALIVE- ROCK SHOWS OF THE 80s & BEYOND
On this episode we’re joined by Northern California based amateur Photographer, Steve Roney & book Author Scott Davis. Steve & Scott, lifelong friends, are promoting an amazing book titled PICTURES ALIVE: ROCK SHOWS OF THE 80s & BEYOND. The elaborate collection of amazing photos & stories contained in the book taken from concerts in the Bay area during the hey-day of Rock & Metal during the 1980s, is not your typical paint by numbers book, but instead is presented from the perspective & viewpoint of a music fan & enthusiastic concert goer. Steve & Scott were just like the rest of us, Heavy Metal junkies who loved to see their favorite bands, however Steve was THAT guy who snuck his camera into the show & decades later has unearthed these never seen before photos from bands like Van Halen, Kiss, Dio, Def Leppard, Judas Priest, AC/DC, Ozzy, Scorpions, Motley Crue and many others. But what makes his collection unique is that the photos are not professional, but still pretty damn good! Heck, who didn’t at some point try to sneak in a camera or cassette recorder to a concert! But beyond the pictures are the recaps and stories from the shows, the ticket stubs & concert ads, setlists, the interfaces with the bands themselves & the comradery with his best friends. Ask yourself this: Did you ever catch a guitar pick from Eddie Van Halen or take a joy ride on the hood of Steve Vai’s car or witness Nikki Sixx autograph someone’s t*ts? Well, Steve did! Another example of a great, unique, conversation filled with in-depth anecdotes and disclosures found only here at Metal Mayhem ROC. The week of November 22, 2023 on The Metallica Report… Inspired by Metallica’s love of covering other artists, Steffan and Renée open things up by musing on tracks they’d like to hear the band tackle. Phil Anselmo and Rex Brown of M72 special guests Pantera chat about playing for Metallica’s fans - the ones who already know and love them and those who are in for a fun surprise. And finally, our hosts check in on Blackened Whiskey's latest collaboration in the Masters of Whiskey series with friend of the pod, Blackened’s Rob Dietrich, and Rabbit Hole’s Kaveh Zamanian. It's Not That Bad - Mallrats
To quote the great, legendary Canadian songstress Robin Sparkles, “Let’s go to the mall today.” Why the mall, you may ask? Because that’s where comic book fans, oversexed teenagers, dope smoking superheroes and game show contestants will be. If that sounds like a good time, it is because Mallrats is not that bad. Only Three Lads - Classic Alternative Music Podcast: Top 5 Albums You GOTTA Have on Vinyl!
Ahhh, vinyl records. For audiophiles and other assorted music nerds (know any of them!?!), it's the passport to sonic bliss. For others, it's an archaic, delicate, noisy and inconvenient medium. Whatever side of the fence you're on, there are albums that you gotta experience on vinyl - whether it be for the sound quality, the artwork, the liner notes, the overall presentation, or maybe it's not available digitally. Remarkably, decades after the format was declared all but dead and buried, it has experienced a huge resurgence in popularity. To commemorate the 75th anniversary of the commercial vinyl LP, In The Groove: The Vinyl Record and Turntable Revolution from Motorbooks is an authoritative and visual celebration of the history and culture of record collecting and turntables, from the first 78 to the explosive growth of vinyl in the last decade, with entertaining sidebars highlighting classic record stores, legendary labels and iconic artwork. Designed to satisfy readers from the most discerning of collectors to those new to the passion, In The Groove gathers five of the finest music scribes to contribute a chapter each. One of those writers (covering record stores) is our Third Lad this week, Gillian Gaar. Gillian G. Gaar is a Seattle-based author. Her first book, She's A Rebel: The History of Women in Rock & Roll was published in 1992. In addition to her own books, she has appeared in various anthologies, including The Nirvana Companion, Trouble Girls: The Rolling Stone Guide to Women in Rock, Nirvana: The Complete Illustrated History, Leonard Cohen on Leonard Cohen: Interviews and Encounters, Goldmine: The Beatles Digest (volumes one and two), The Best of the Beatles Book, The Stranger Guide To Seattle, 33 1/3 Greatest Hits Vol 2, A Survey of American Culture, and various editions of The Scribner Encyclopedia of American Lives, among others. She was editorial assistant for Krist Novoselic's book From Grunge To Government: Let's Fix This Broken Democracy! She was also a project consultant/liner note writer for Nirvana's box set "With The Lights Out." She has written for numerous magazines, including Rolling Stone, Mojo, Q, Goldmine, The Seattle Times, The Stranger, Option, and No Depression, and was a senior editor at Seattle music paper The Rocket. She has also written liner notes for collections by Laurie Anderson, Judy Collins, Heart, Pat Benatar, Paula Cole and Mat Kearney, among others. Learn more about your ad choices. Ep 171Love That Album - Ben Folds "Rockin' The Suburbs"
EWe tend to think more of the guitar as a rock and roll instrument, but Jerry Lee Lewis, Little Richard and Fats Domino were a big part of the early sound of rock and roll. While there are plenty of great rock piano players, that lead guy or gal mostly tends to be playing a six-string. In the 70s and 80s, the big piano frontmen were Billy Joel and Elton John – hugely popular with what they did, but much (though not all) of it was balladry. Where were the trouble-makers and the pisstakers behind the 88s? One of them was hiding out in North Carolina. Welcome to episode 171 of Love That Album. By 2000, Ben Folds Five had broken up, leaving behind three incredible albums of “punk music for sissies” (Ben’s alleged description of the band). They’d created songs both raucous and tender, angry and loving, serious and funny. In 2001, Ben Folds released his first solo album “Rockin’ The Suburbs” (recorded in Adelaide), and he plays and sings nearly everything. Once again, he aimed for your funny bone, but he also told stories that could break your heart. These stories showed once again that Folds was a master of melody, harmony and was very literate. For this episode, I am joined by the host and “numbers girl” of the wonderful All Time Top Ten podcast, Ben Eisen and Shannon Hurley. We sit around the virtual table discussing Folds’ techniques in composition and arrangement, his potty mouth, the seeming contrast between the man who could write both The Luckiest and Song For The Dumped, and real life stories from the suburbs about everyday people brought to life in this collection of short stories – love spurned, love embraced, parenthood, mental health, and cussing on the mic. My huge thanks to both Ben and Shannon for being such great partners for this discussion about a performer who we all love. We never even mention the one song seemingly everyone knows….because Folds is so much more than that one song. I won’t let it be 3 years before Ben and Shannon rock the mics with me on LTA again. Prisoners of Rock and Roll - A Look Back At We Are The World
EThere were several ambitious projects in the 1980s where the music industry tried to make a difference by raising money to make a difference. One of those projects happened in 1985, when dozens of musicians formed a supergroup called USA for Africa and recorded We Are the World. Written by Lionel Richie and Michael Jackson and produced by the legendary Quincy Jones, We Are the World included dozens of performers in a star-studded ensemble cast made up of some of the biggest names in music at the time: Stevie Wonder, Ray Charles, Paul Simon, Willie Nelson, Kenny Loggins, Bruce Springsteen, Cyndi Lauper, Smokey Robinson, Bob Dylan, Billy Joel, Diana Ross, Huey Lewis, Hall & Oats, the Pointer Sisters, and more. All walked into a studio where they were greeted by a sign that said “check your egos at the door.” And they did. The finished product sold more than 20 million copies and was simultaneously played on 8,000 radio stations around the world. The project raised more than $63 million for famine relief in Africa. Nearly 40 years later, USA For Africa, is still active and fighting poverty. In this episode of Prisoners of Rock and World, we’re taking a look at We Are the World – the idea behind the project, the recording, and it’s impact. I'm In Love With That Song podcast: Fanny - "Cat Fever"
When it comes to boundaries, Fanny faced them all: racial, gender & sexual discrimination were all obstacles that stood in their way. Fanny may be forgotten by many today, but they were one of the most important all-female bands in rock history, paving the way for groups like The Go-Go's, Bangles, and The Runaways. Ugly American Werewolf in London: Ozzy Osbourne - Bark at the Moon
As Ozzy Osbourne's 3rd solo album Bark at the Moon turns 40, we look back on what was a very pivotal time in the life of Ozzy and his wife/manager Sharon. After the tragic death of Randy Rhoads, they soldiered on with Brad Gillis (Night Ranger) and bought some time with the live Speak of the Devil album. But Ozzy needed not only a new gunslinger to replace Rhoads virtuosity, he also needed a new writing partner. Enter Jake E. Lee from Mickey Ratt (which would evolve into Ratt) who could write songs and deliver blistering solos. And MTV was eagerly awaiting the first videos from the former Black Sabbath madman. On the home front, Ozzy is battling substance abuse, Sharon is at odds with her father/super-manager Don Arden, their is infidelity and while they have legal problems and bad press, they start having kids. Plus the band seems to always be in flux as Rudy Sarzo (Quiet Riot) has left to be replaced by Bob Daisley who had written and recorded on the first two Ozzy solo albums. And while Tommy Aldridge plays on the album, Carmine Appice appears in the Bark at the Moon video. While some of the songs like the title track and Rock N Roll Rebel would be hailed as classic Ozzy, the 2nd UK single So Tired is an interesting choice for a heavy metal singer but the video is classic MTV and classic Ozzy. Released November 15, 1983 in the US and December 2, 1983 in the UK, we celebrate its 40th by going track x track, video x video and offstage drama from this triple platinum seller. In this episode of Rock is Lit we dive deep into the visceral and tumultuous world of author GenXCore’s debut novel, ‘California Roadkill’. Explore the harrowing journey of three societal outliers as they navigate the shadows of violence, homelessness, and the haunting residue of addiction. From the gritty streets of Los Angeles to the soothing breezes of coastal California, the novel is an odyssey of self-discovery set against the backdrop of the Golden State. GenXCore and I delve into the multifaceted layers of the narrative, touching on the struggles of an adjunct teacher, whose face bears the scars of a student’s rebellion against a bad grade, and two of his former punk rock bandmates, one of whom is battling addiction and destitution, the other of whom thinks he’s found the cure to craving and compulsion. The intertwining of punk rock music and culture amplifies the story's intensity, offering a powerful soundtrack that resonates with the characters’ experiences and the broader societal commentary within the novel. Only Three Lads - Classic Alternative Music Podcast: The Darling Buds' Top 5 Songs with Heart (Part 2)
Here's the exciting conclusion of a two parter that's all about songs with "heart" - in the title, that is. The heart is a nasty lookin' thing, innit? But it's a word that symbolizes so much - love, pain, devotion, longing, passion, energy, excitement, life itself. It's safe to say that it's perhaps the second most essential organ in rock n' roll (insert winky smiley face here). We are thrilled to be joined by Andrea Lewis Jarvis, Harley Farr, and Matt Gray from The Darling Buds! The Buds formed in Newport, Wales in 1986, a band of friends who made great music and experienced amazing adventures together. The new 5-CD Cherry Red Records box set, Killing For Love: Albums, Singles, Rarities, Unreleased 1987-2017 collects the band's three albums recorded for CBS/Sony (1989's Pop Said... , 1990's Crawdaddy, 1992's Erotica), their 2017 EP Evergreen, and plenty of early singles, demos, b-sides, and rarities. During Part 2, you'll hear our top two choices for "heart" songs, the glorious new box set, the pros and cons of the modern music business model, the obscene power of the British music media, US vs. UK crowds, the timelessness of classic alternative, and what drives the band now. Plus, hear the 1987 Leeds demo of "Shame On You" from Killing For Love. If you haven't listened to Part 1 yet, go back and listen! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

But that's not all! Vinny takes us behind the scenes of his journey, from quitting high school after hanging out with John Lennon to being a last-minute replacement for Bill Ward in Black Sabbath. He shares the nerve-wracking experience of auditioning for the band and the progression of their shows as the new drummer, shedding light on the dynamics and tensions within the group. ERyan Allen, a multi-faceted musician from Detroit, Michigan, has been an active and influential figure in the music scene since the early 1990s. Allen has been a part of too many groups to mention, but here is a sampling: Destroy This Place, Friendly Foes, Red Shirt Brigade, Ryan + Jono, and Thunderbirds Are Now! Far from an exhaustive list, each of these bands showcased different facets of Allen's musical prowess and interests, ranging from indie and punk to hardcore and alternative rock In 2011, Allen launched "Ryan Allen & His Extra Arms." What began as a solo project has evolved into a full-fledged band, now simply known as Extra Arms. Set Lusting Bruce - Wendi Gordon - Timeless Truths for Troubled Times
Wendi sent me an email and here is part of it "I’ve never met Bruce Springsteen, but I owe him a huge debt of gratitude. His music has been my constant companion since high school, helping me celebrate good times and make it through hard times. From the time when I danced exuberantly to “Dancing in the Dark” with my then two-year-old sister when she entered my room and begged me to “dance Booce Tin-tin” in the early 1980’s to the time I cried as I listened to “I’ll See You in My Dreams” while driving home from my dad’s funeral a few months ago, Bruce has always been there." She and I had a wonderful discussion, including Wendi and her husband's decision to move to Hawaii, her love of Bruce's music and in a more serious tone, a discussion of the current culture among some in the church. https://bio.link/wendigordon Learn more about your ad choices. During Part 1, you'll hear our first three choices for "heart" songs, the thrill of being played on John Peel, Tom Waits in the toilet, major label pressures, a guy who we shall call "Fred", that other Erotica album, LA nights, dalliances with Debbie Harry, Kirsty MacColl, Thompson Twins, Christina Applegate, Cher, Sarah Jessica Parker, the cast of 90210, and getting stuck with Shane MacGowan's bar bills. Plus, hear the previously unreleased demo "Why Bother Now" from Killing For Love. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Imbalanced History: 5 Favorites: UK Rock Singers Of The 1970s!
EGenerally speaking, when Markus & Ray do an episode of 5 Favorites the narrower the category, the easier it is for them to match answers. (Unlike some recent 5 Fave episodes!) It's one silly part of the game when the Imbalanced Boys take the "road to Vegas!" As is often the case, the guy's Honorable Mentions are lengthy here. Digging into the timeframe of the '70s, and narrowing the parameters to the UK Rock singers should, in theory, cause the lads to concur more often. Can you guess who they have in common? Click through and let's find out! As always, this episode is brought to you by Crooked Eye Brewery! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
