Only Three Lads - Classic Alternative Music Podcast: Life After Punk

E

Ah, punk rock. Some punks held onto the style and ideology for dear life (some more successfully than others). For others, punk was a springboard into exciting new territories where the possibilities were limitless. It's the latter that we cover this week - the artists who shed the ripped shirts and safety pins to creatively flourish after punk's initial rush. Join crusty old punks Gregg Grinder and Brett Ba$t@ard for an exploration on the topic of "life after punk," as well as Blue October, Liquid Death (no, we're not sponsored by them), Playboy (no, we're not sponsored by them either), the Post Office, scambaiting, Shakira, middle aged forgetfullness, and the pinnacle of human existence. Ep 78Banned Biographies - Interview with Pete Trainor (Author of 'Calling All The Dreamers' - The Untold Story of Electrasy)

This episode of the Banned Biographies podcast is a very special interview with Pete Trainor, a designer, product-innovator, author, strategist, applied data specialist, technologist, suicide prevention campaigner, and massive music fan. He talks all over the world on creative and social technologies, data, Ai and the physiological and psychological effects on their audiences. However, in 2023 he zigged when many would zag, and published his second book, ‘Calling All The Dreamers‘. The remarkable true story about a Britpop band called Electrasy who went crashing through the record industry, but were ultimately halted by technology and shifting human-behaviour. Pete got in contact with me a few months ago about the book and wondered if I’d like to read it with a view to arranging an interview with Electrasy. That will still happen in the future, but what struck me about the book was the level of fandom he has for this little known band from his home town of Yeovil and why he felt he needed to tell the story. For many of us I felt that this would be the perfect entry level to the Electrasy story and will certainly inform the direction of the interview with the band in the near future. In this conversation we not only talk about the book and the career of Electrasy, we also get into what drives fandom, life in provincial towns, the pros and cons of technology in life (let alone the music industry) and Pete’s role as a technologist and professional speaker, which goes deep. ‘Calling All The Dreamers’ is now available in paperback and Electrasy’s debut album, Beautiful Insane’ has been re-released using AI technology from the original studio demos from 1998. So be sure to visit electrasy.co.uk where you can buy Beautiful Insane, their other music, merch and Pete’s book 'Calling All The Dreamers', alternatively, you could visit Pete’s website trainor.fyi to buy any of his books, see some of his amazing work and watch his various talks, they’re well worth it. S3 Ep 41Rock is Lit: Beyond ‘Double Fantasy’: Laurie Kaye’s Journey to John Lennon’s Last Interview

In this episode of Rock is Lit, we’re deviating from the world of fiction to explore the riveting reality of rock ‘n’ roll. Laurie Kaye is here to talk about her brand-new memoir, ‘Confessions of a Rock 'N' Roll Name-Dropper: My Life Leading Up to John Lennon’s Last Interview’. Get ready for exclusive behind-the-scenes tales, intimate encounters with rock royalty, and a symphony of stories that will transport you back to the golden age of rock. The Metallica Report 19: Lars’ Current Music Obsessions; Robert’s Favorite Funk Grooves; Dr. Corey Spurlin, Auburn University Marching Band Director

The week of December 6, 2023 on The Metallica Report… Steffan and Renée do a deep dive into both the physical and mental iPods of Lars and Rob, as Lars shares more of his musical obsessions and Rob throws down his five favorite funk cuts. They also speak with Auburn University’s Professor of Music and Marching Band Director, Dr. Corey Spurlin. The musical themed show kicks off with Lars and his deep dive into the heavier side of Lynyrd Skynyrd as he outlines his five favorite lesser known tracks from the Florida band. His other current favorite musical obsession? Warrior Soul, a band he describes as “in that zone zone between hard rock, heavy metal, but a lot of punk attitude and a lot of kind-of not giving a shit.” To no one’s surprise, Robert is our resident funk-master and he gives us his five favorite funk grooves, including divulging that the Isley Brothers were his very first concert; it was the moment he knew he wanted to be a musician. Finally we hear from Dr. Corey Spurlin at Auburn University, whose marching band has wowed us all with their half-time show entry to the For Whom The Band Tolls Marching Band competition. Corey tells us how the band chose the songs they performed and that Metallica’s performance with the San Francisco Symphony on S&M2 provided inspiration. Metal Mayhem ROC:WICKED Rockers return with new Rock Anthem single

On this week's episode we welcome back our old friends Modern-day melodic/theatrical rockers Wicked to the show. The band have their second CD set for a March 2024 release and this fall have started rolling out singles from the disc. November 2023 had the first single "Lost in The Dark", and now they are back with the latest single/video – which turns out to be its title track, 'Sunburn.' https://chipsterpr.us5.list-manage.com/track/click?u=bdb1a8377ea3eeb263b993237&id=9a1ebc7c10&e=4a523428da Additionally, Wicked will be taking part in a livestream interactive release show dubbed "The Rock N Roll Circus Show" on December 8, 2023 at 8pm, which will be the kickoff of the series of this rock n' roll variety show. The live streamed show will focus on the "Sunburn" single, but also featuring performances, behind the scenes footage, live interactions with the band, giveaways, and more, via this link: https://youtube.com/@WICKEDROCKNROLL?si=mVBzRSnoNyqD8NOb The band (singer/guitarist Chad Michael, guitarist Scotty V, bassist Danny, and drummer Gunnar) describes "Sunburn" as "A punchy, punishing rocker, with sharpened punk edges and lyrical prowess that could have easily been played at an aggressive Michael Monroe show on the Lower East Side, or on MTV in the 90s by a band like Third Eye Blind. The second single off the upcoming sophomore album 'Sunburn' gives the vibe of that saying, 'too much of a good thing,' and is accompanied by footage from our cross-country escape to California. We drove 38 hours straight in the band van from coast to coast, facing all the surprises old Route 66 had to offer – from storms to vehicle breakdowns and all the new faces we got to meet. From Cali beaches to the Joshua Tree desert, we brought our rock n' roll party and burnt the candle at both ends. It was a perfect way to live out the metaphorical meaning of 'Sunburn' is a song about excess and its repercussions. Don’t miss what happens to the band in our music video after we invite these rock n' roll ladies to our desert getaway!" In 2023 it’s born with one purpose and that’s to fly the flag of that unapologetic Rock N Roll lifestyle and be your next summer anthem!" First Concert Memories #5: Jimmy Page & Robert Plant with Christy Alexander Hallberg of Rock is Lit

We first met Christy Alexander Hallberg a couple of years ago while she was promoting her rock novel Searching for Jimmy Page. Since then we've become friends and she now hosts her own podcast, Rock Is Lit, about rock n roll fiction books. So we had to have her on First Concert Memories to talk about the first (and to this point, only) time she saw Jimmy play live when he teamed back up with Robert Plant on the 1998 Walking into Clarksdale Tour. The Wolf & Action Jackson saw Page & Plant together in Orlando in 1995 on the Un-Ledded Tour with an orchestra which was incredible. But for this tour, it was a much more stripped down, Led Zeppelin-ish band set up and Christy shares all her memories with us. From getting n the car to make the 2 and half hour drive to Virginia Beach to the drive home with the windows open as some over-served frat boys puked on her shoes, we relive the sights, the sounds, and unfortunately the smells of that fateful night in 1998 At that point she hadn't been to England on her quest for all things Page and Led Zeppelin which would inspire her novel years later. And a quick note to Jimmy Page - why is there no live album or DVD from this tour? You haven't been touring or putting out new music over the last decade, why don't you release a special commemorative box set for this tour? It's the last tour you guys ever did together or will ever do.....or is it? Ep 555Decibel Geek Podcast - Label Wars (1980-1984) - Ep555

E

This week we look back to a time when the music industry was, mostly, run through a handful of record labels. With big money to be made, record companies such as Capitol, Epic, Columbia, and Atlantic wielded a lot of power. Buyouts were happening such as in the case of Polygram acquiring Casablanca Records which would result in a very in-flux KISS winding up on Mercury Records. Smaller labels, while limited financially, were successful at times due to scouting new talent and breaking it. This circumstance would lead labels such as Elektra, Metal Blade, and Megaforce to be on the ground floor of some legendary careers and genres. In this discussion, we discuss all of these record labels, many of the notable artists that inhabited their rosters, how they stacked up in the rock world, and much more. The era we're focusing on this time is 1980-1984. Was the rule and oversight of the early 80's music industry a good thing? Is today's wide open musical climate a better thing for artists? Let us know what YOU think in the comments! We hope you enjoy Label Wars (1980-1984) and SHARE with a friend. Decibel Geek is a proud member of the Pantheon Podcasts family. Contact Us! I'm In Love With That Song podcast: Pete Townshend "The Sea Refuses No River"

Pete Townshend’s 3rd solo album was a divisive record; many critics called it pretentious, over-thought, and an "ambitious failure". But it contains at least two Townshend masterpieces, including “The Sea Refuses No River”, a song with deep spiritual meaning to Townshend. This episode, we explore this eloquent, graceful classic. Ugly American Werewolf in London - Band on the Run at 50

Growing up in the 1970s and 80s, one assumed that Paul McCartney was always universally loved because of his work in The Beatles, his 70s solo work and that with Wings, and his positive peace & love attitude. However, in 1973 Paul found himself in a bit of turmoil. Though he'd enjoyed some success as a solo artist, particularly in the US, Paul was being criticized for the adult contemporary nature of his music vs. the output of the other Beatles and the harder rocking music of the day. He was skewered in the British press after he released Leave Ireland to the Irish on the heels of Bloody Sunday in 1972 and had lost several members of Wings over being treated as hired hands and the presence of Linda in the band despite her lack of musical ability. However, Paul forged ahead with Linda and Denny Laine to create Band on the Run, released on December 5, 1973 in the US (November 30, 1973 in the UK). The title track is one of redemption and freedom inspired by George Harrison during their ongoing Apple Corps meetings and negotiations. Jet is an upbeat song that climbed the charts around the world despite it being about his dog and getting to know Linda's father. Songs like Bluebird, Mrs. Vanderbilt, Let Me Roll It and Nineteen Hundred and Eighty-Five became AM and classic rock radio staples in the US where the album not only went to #1 but sold more than 3 million copies. As the album that gave Paul back his credibility with the critics and allowed Paul and Wings to continue through the end of the 70s turns 50, we give it our classic track by track treatment. Ep 554Decibel Geek Podcast - The End of KISS(?) - Ep554

E

With this week marking the end of KISS as a touring entity, we thought we'd serve up a Torpedo Dudes 4 All! This is Decibel Geek's KISS-exclusive podcast and there's plenty to discuss! KISS recently had to cancel shows in Ottawa, Toronto, and Knoxville due to Paul Stanley contracting the flu. The band got back on track for Indianapolis and is moving forward with the final dates. Between the Ottawa and Toronto cancellations a tragic car accident/explosion made news as a possible terror attack. How does this (potentially) relate to KISS? Listen to find out. As the band prepares for this weekend's final shows at Madison Square Garden, we discuss our thoughts on the current lineup, how we got to our opinions, and the multiple KISS-themed doings in NYC this week. Activities discussed include the NYC KISS takeover and, of course, the shows themselves. It was confirmed recently that no ex-members, including Bruce Kulick, will be guesting at the shows. Will there be any surprises or shakeups for these landmark shows? We give our predictions. Speaking of ex-members, Ace Frehley released the title track to his upcoming album '10,000 Volts' which is due next February. We give our reactions to the new single, our hopes for the album, and more. We hope you enjoy Torpedo Dudes 4 All and consider joining us on Patreon as a DBG VIP! Only Three Lads - Classic Alternative Music Podcast : The Spongetones’ Jamie Hoover & Top 5 Songs of 1990

This week, we celebrate the beginning of the '90s (Or was it the end of the '80s? You be the judge.) When MC Hammer, Vanilla Ice and Wilson Phillips ruled the airwaves. When Uncle Gregg found some direction and joined the Navy. When teenage Brett co-founded his first band, Empty Glass. And when our special guest, power pop legend Jamie Hoover was caught in a flurry of activity, releasing his debut solo album Coupons, Questions And Comments and prepping for The Spongetones' 1991 third full length, Oh Yeah! Formed in 1979 and very much influenced by the British Invasion, Charlotte, North Carolina's The Spongetones carried on the musical genre through acclaimed original songwriting, jangle pop riffs, and lilting, Beatlesque vocals. In his 2007 authoritative book Shake Some Action, John M. Borack rated The Spongetones' Beat And Torn (a CD containing 1982's Beat Music LP - one of Brett's all time favorites - and 1984's Torn Apart mini-LP) at #24 of his Top 200 Power Pop Albums of all time. The band features the triple threat of talented singers and songwriters: Jamie Hoover, Pat Walters and Steve Stoeckel. In addition to The Spongetones, Jamie has shared the stage and recorded with Don Dixon and Marti Jones, The Smithereens, Graham Parker, Hootie & The Blowfish, Bill Lloyd, Emitt Rhodes, and Ray Paul, among others. Hoover either produced or co-produced all the Spongetones' albums, and continues to produce a wide variety of other musicians, recently including '60s singer/songwriter Bob Lind ('Elusive Butterfly') and young prodigy Elena Rogers. Ep 111See Hear 111 - Theory of Obscurity: A Film About The Residents

E

Musicians, artists, actors and authors (and any other creatives I haven’t nominated) have long taken pseudonyms. Maybe a more exciting name will sell an image, maybe it’s to have some semblance of privacy, maybe it’s to separate themselves from their past, …any number of reasons. Avant garde art collective The Residents took things beyond name change – they maintained complete anonymity. Welcome to episode 111 of See Hear Podcast. The Residents are a band, multimedia artists, theatrical performers….and anonymous. Long time fans claim to be aware of their identities, but putting that aside, the band subscribed to the Theory of Obscurity that maintains that better art is created when the artist is anonymous and free of audience expectations. The band has always performed with masks and not given names….not even pseudonyms. They’ve been creating music for over 50 years, and have released multitudes of albums – original compositions and deconstructions of 20th century standards from the likes of The Rolling Stones, James Brown and George Gershwin. Trying to define what they do beyond the catch-all tag of “avant- garde” is ridiculous. For some, it can be music that is difficult or challenging….and for others, it can be a breath of fresh air. For this episode of See Hear, Tim and Maurice discuss the 2015 film “Theory of Obscurity: A Film About The Residents” directed by Don Hardy, its themes, the music of the Residents, and whether there’s something actually to the theory or if it’s bunk. The film is easily available on Kanopy, Youtube and Tubi. You can tune into our conversation before or after watching it, but either way, grab your top hat and cane, then tune in. Ep 77Banned Biographies - October and November News and Reviews

E

Apologies for not releasing an episode last month, I’ve been putting the finishing touches to my new office as well as gigging and recording with my bands, so I didn’t have the time to get anything done, in fact I had to postpone a few interviews because of it all which is a reflection of how little time I’ve had. I'm back now though to let you know what's been going on and what you can expect on the next episode, which will be released next week. The news in this episode revolves around festival line up announcements, tour date announcements and cancellations, new album announcements, the controversy around the buy-out and subsequent lay-offs at Bandcamp, guitarist Jeff Schroeder quitting The Smashing Pumpkins, blink-182 playing a gig in a diner, Blondie's Chris Stein releasing an autobiography, Rat Scabies re-joining The Damned, and Shane MacGowan's ongoing health issues.
