S6 Ep 611Episode 611 - Ryan Allen
ERyan Allen, a multi-faceted musician from Detroit, Michigan, has been an active and influential figure in the music scene since the early 1990s. Allen has been a part of too many groups to mention, but here is a sampling: Destroy This Place, Friendly Foes, Red Shirt Brigade, Ryan + Jono, and Thunderbirds Are Now! Far from an exhaustive list, each of these bands showcased different facets of Allen's musical prowess and interests, ranging from indie and punk to hardcore and alternative rock In 2011, Allen launched "Ryan Allen & His Extra Arms." What began as a solo project has evolved into a full-fledged band, now simply known as Extra Arms. This project allowed Allen to explore a more personal and memoir-esque musical style, reminiscent of post-hardcore troubadours like Ted Leo, and Bob Mould Allen's music often reflects his personal life and experience, featuring songs about his family, friends, and his journey through music over the years. Allen has also been involved in the band BIG LIFE, a group of seasoned local musicians creating Melodic Hardcore music inspired by Dischord Records' "Revolution Summer" era. BIG LIFE's sound draws influence from bands like Dag Nasty, and Fugazi. Ryan Allen's career illustrates a dedication to evolving and experimenting within the realm of music, making him a distinctive and respected figure in Detroit's rich musical landscape. Well, we can now add writer to the list of things Ryan Allen excels at. In the Fall/Winter Edition of Remember the Lightning: A Guitar Pop Journal, Volume 2, Allen penned the piece “The Ties That Bind Hardcore Punk & Power Pop.” LINKS Extra Arms Big Life (band) Speed Circuit (band) Remember the Lightning: A Guitar Pop Journal Vol. 2 Thunderbirds Are Now Bracken Learn more about your ad choices. Comes A Time: Page McConnell of Phish and Adam Zimmon of Ziggy Marley Band
Oteil and Mike go deep with special guests Page McConnell of Phish and Adam Zimmon of the Ziggy Marley Band about their late friend and bandmate Russell Batiste Jr., the legendary funk drummer from New Orleans. Russell recently passed away, so they gathered to reminisce about his larger-than-life personality and incredible musical talents. They recall how Russell's energetic drumming was the backbone of their jam band Vida Blue, which Page had formed during the Phish hiatus in 2001. They shared funny road stories about Russell's quirky habits, like yelling chord changes or needing glow-in-the-dark drumsticks in the middle of nowhere. Despite Russell's reputation as a wild character, they emphasized he was a musical genius blessed with perfect pitch who could play any instrument effortlessly. Russell Batiste Jr.'s larger-than-life funk and generosity of spirit touched so many, and he leaves massive shoes to fill in the world of New Orleans drumming. Be sure to check out Russell's recordings and live videos to experience his percussive genius firsthand. Set Lusting Bruce - Wendi Gordon - Timeless Truths for Troubled Times
Wendi sent me an email and here is part of it "I’ve never met Bruce Springsteen, but I owe him a huge debt of gratitude. His music has been my constant companion since high school, helping me celebrate good times and make it through hard times. From the time when I danced exuberantly to “Dancing in the Dark” with my then two-year-old sister when she entered my room and begged me to “dance Booce Tin-tin” in the early 1980’s to the time I cried as I listened to “I’ll See You in My Dreams” while driving home from my dad’s funeral a few months ago, Bruce has always been there." She and I had a wonderful discussion, including Wendi and her husband's decision to move to Hawaii, her love of Bruce's music and in a more serious tone, a discussion of the current culture among some in the church. https://bio.link/wendigordon Learn more about your ad choices. Shout It Out Loudcast: Album Review Crew "Kick"
EOn the 46th Episode of the Album Review Crew of Shout It Out Loudcast, Tom, Zeus & Sonny review rock band INXS' 1987 monster album, "Kick." Kick was the Australian band INXS' 6th solo studio album. The album catapulted INXS in superstardom, especially in the United States, where the album went 6x platinum and also selling over 20 million albums worldwide. The album also reached number 3 on the US Billboard album charts and had 4 top ten singles, with one of them reaching number 1. INXS was led by one of the most charismatic frontman of the 1980's, Michael Hutchence. Whose voice, style and sexiness was made for MTV and the 1980's. The band features three of the Farriss brothers, Andrew on keyboards and guitar, Jon on drums and Tim on guitars along with Kirk Pengilly on guitars and sax and Garry Gary Beers on bass. The album was produced by Chris Thomas. Kick featured undeniable hits made for the 1980's radio and MTV like, New Sensation, Devil Inside, Never Tear Us Apart and the number one hit, Need You Tonight. The album and tour made INXS and Michael Hutchence darlings of the era. As usual the boys breakdown and dissect the tracks and rank the songs. They then rank the album and the album cover against the previous 44 albums reviewed on the Album Review Crew. This was Zeus' pick. It's Not That Bad - Days Of Thunder
In the 80’s, Tom Cruise was able to make anything and everything look cool…F15 fighter jets? Cool. Bartending around the world as a career choice? Cool. Dancing around in your underwear and turning your parents’ house into a brothel…questionable, but yet somehow cool. What would 1990 bring? Well, more of the same, because Days Of Thunder is not that bad. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Famous & Gravy: America's Mustache (Burt Reynolds)
His early passion was for football, and he played halfback at Florida State University. He was part Cherokee. He had an often turbulent career that spanned some 100 films and countless television appearances. He had a volatile temperament, but he himself projected an air of nonchalance and professed not to take his career too seriously. He was a self-mocking charmer with laugh-crinkled dark eyes, a distinctive mustache and a hairy chest. He did not always win the respect of critics, though had box-office success with films like “Smokey and the Bandit” and “Cannonball Run.” Today’s dead celebrity is Burt Reynolds. Only Three Lads - Classic Alternative Music Podcast: The Darling Buds' Top 5 Songs with Heart (Part 1)
Part one of a two parter that's all about songs with "heart" - in the title, that is. The heart is a nasty lookin' thing, innit? But it's a word that symbolizes so much - love, pain, devotion, longing, passion, energy, excitement, life itself. It's safe to say that it's perhaps the second most essential organ in rock n' roll (insert winky smiley face here). We are thrilled to be joined by Andrea Lewis Jarvis, Harley Farr, and Matt Gray from The Darling Buds! The Buds formed in Newport, Wales in 1986, a band of friends who made great music and experienced amazing adventures together. The new 5-CD Cherry Red Records box set, Killing For Love: Albums, Singles, Rarities, Unreleased 1987-2017 collects the band's three albums recorded for CBS/Sony (1989's Pop Said... , 1990's Crawdaddy, 1992's Erotica), their 2017 EP Evergreen, and plenty of early singles, demos, b-sides, and rarities. During Part 1, you'll hear our first three choices for "heart" songs, the thrill of being played on John Peel, Tom Waits in the toilet, major label pressures, a guy who we shall call "Fred", that other Erotica album, LA nights, dalliances with Debbie Harry, Kirsty MacColl, Thompson Twins, Christina Applegate, Cher, Sarah Jessica Parker, the cast of 90210, and getting stuck with Shane MacGowan's bar bills. Plus, hear the previously unreleased demo "Why Bother Now" from Killing For Love. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Imbalanced History: 5 Favorites: UK Rock Singers Of The 1970s!
EGenerally speaking, when Markus & Ray do an episode of 5 Favorites the narrower the category, the easier it is for them to match answers. (Unlike some recent 5 Fave episodes!) It's one silly part of the game when the Imbalanced Boys take the "road to Vegas!" As is often the case, the guy's Honorable Mentions are lengthy here. Digging into the timeframe of the '70s, and narrowing the parameters to the UK Rock singers should, in theory, cause the lads to concur more often. Can you guess who they have in common? Ugly American Werewolf in London: Billy Idol - Rebel Yell
Billy Idol sold his hedonistic act & lifestyle to MTV in the 80s and it was a match made in heaven. Thanks to Billy's snarling sexuality and his mix of hard rock with new wave thanks to longtime collaborator Steve Stevens, Billy used the fledgling cable channel as not a springboard but a rocketship to superstardom. He'd already received attention and airplay thanks to White Wedding and with 4 singles off of Rebel Yell Billy's star rose to great heights in the US. However, in his home country of the UK, Billy didn't enjoy the same success. Maybe due to no MTV or perhaps the fact that the English public saw him as a punk and wouldn't consider him as a pop/rock singer, this album only achieved silver status in England while going double platinum in the US. The singles Rebel Yell (names after a chance encounter with The Rolling Stones), Eyes Without a Face (named after a French horror film), Flesh for Fantasy (also swiped from an old movie) and Catch My Fall, Billy had 4 charting singles and 4 videos that we talk about in-depth on the show. This was the album that allows him to still tour & perform to this day and while some of the songs sound like they were recorded in 1983, some are timeless relics of the cassette era. It was a life-and-death duel, and during the arduous period of convalescence, ensconced in isolation, he embarked on the audacious endeavor of assembling a musical ensemble that would later be christened as Chesterwhite. Their debut drew comparisons to luminaries like David Bowie and T-Rex, infused with a dystopian tincture. The album wove a tapestry of a science-fiction odyssey, inspired by Donny's own life as a cancer survivor grappling with the tempestuous throes of a toxic relationship. Simultaneously, Donny was cultivating a sterling reputation behind the scenes. He lent his songcraft to a diverse array of artists, and initiated a foray into the realm of bespoke musical compositions for television and commercials. The astonishing journey of singer, songwriter, and producer Donny Dykowsky unfolds in a sequence of sonic metamorphoses. Having weathered the crucible of cancer, endured tumultuous relationships, and embraced the mantle of fatherhood, Donny emerges on the other side with a voice that is both vulnerable and brimming with vitality. His latest offering, the eponymous EP "Mirrors On The Moon," balances precariously on the precipice of psych-rock and harmonious American. Donny joined Keith in Thunderlove Studio to have a chat. This is their conversation. Prisoners of Rock and Roll -- Gnarly One Hit Wonders of the 1980s
There were a lot of things about the 1980s that we’d like to forget but one of the most memorable parts of the decade was the music. We’ve got a list of songs that includes some that we still listen to today…and some that haven’t aged very well. So, Come On Eileen and Take On Me while we Put On the Ritz down in Funkytown. Ugly American Werewolf in London: KISS - Live For The Last Time
When you become a father, you do things for your kids - even things you once said you'd never do again. That's exactly what The Wolf did when he took the Wolfcub to see KISS on their interminable End Of The Road Tour for the third time in five years. He wanted her to have the experience of a KISS live show with all its bombast, pyrotechnics and visual overload. Though she saw them twice in 2019 (Louisville and London) she was a bit young and couldn't make it through the whole show. And though they had tickets to see them in Amsterdam, they moved back to the US before they could attend. So while The Wolf once said in the early 2000's "I've seen KISS 6x, I'm not seeing them live ever again" he has relented 3x so his beloved Wolfcub could see first hand what a KISS live show was all about. Action Jackson asks The Wolf about all the details seasoned KISS fans expect like the Demon spitting blood, fire and flying through the air. Seeing Starchild up close on the b-stage was the highlight for our young KISS fan! And for The Wolf, he has checked this box enough - though happy he had the chance to experience the show with his favorite rock fan, he's ready to close the book on KISS live. Or is he... What Difference Does It Make: Happy Movember
It's the most wonderful time of the year...at least for those allowed to grow a moustache in the month of November, aka Movember. The reason for this moustache celebration is because two Aussies (Travis Garone and Luke Slattery) wanted to create awareness for men's health issues. Cut to twenty years later, and the movement is bigger than ever. To celebrate the month, we invited Max Skinner, Community Development Manager representing Movember. We talk about the history, the ideas, and the causes they support. Of course, we also talk about our favorite musicians and songs that best represent the 'mo.
