Ugly American Werewolf in London: Billy Idol - Rebel Yell

Billy Idol sold his hedonistic act & lifestyle to MTV in the 80s and it was a match made in heaven. Thanks to Billy's snarling sexuality and his mix of hard rock with new wave thanks to longtime collaborator Steve Stevens, Billy used the fledgling cable channel as not a springboard but a rocketship to superstardom. He'd already received attention and airplay thanks to White Wedding and with 4 singles off of Rebel Yell Billy's star rose to great heights in the US. However, in his home country of the UK, Billy didn't enjoy the same success. Maybe due to no MTV or perhaps the fact that the English public saw him as a punk and wouldn't consider him as a pop/rock singer, this album only achieved silver status in England while going double platinum in the US. The singles Rebel Yell (names after a chance encounter with The Rolling Stones), Eyes Without a Face (named after a French horror film), Flesh for Fantasy (also swiped from an old movie) and Catch My Fall, Billy had 4 charting singles and 4 videos that we talk about in-depth on the show. This was the album that allows him to still tour & perform to this day and while some of the songs sound like they were recorded in 1983, some are timeless relics of the cassette era. Shout It Out Loudcast: "KISS On Tomorrow Show Tom Snyder October 31, 1979"

E

This week Tom & Zeus breakdown KISS' legendary 1979 Halloween appearance on Tomorrow With Tom Snyder. The Tomorrow Show With Tom Snyder was a late night tv talk show on NBC hosted by the likeable host Tom Snyder. By the time KISS appeared on the show, the band was already falling apart. However, this night became a favorite of the KISS Army due to an obviously drunk Ace Frehley, who took over the interview much to the dismay of usual ringleaders Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley. The guys breakdown the appearance in SIOL fashion and detail each members behavior as well. The guys then rank this KISS TV appearance against the previous KISS TV appearances they have reviewed so far. So tune in because it's all here, the plumber, the dirty looks and the Space Bear! S6 Ep 610Episode 610 - Donny Dykowsky

E

In this business of music, the battle to be seen and heard is tough. Luckily, Donny Dykowsky has emerged as a seasoned combatant. A champion, if you will. The early two-thousands bore witness to Donny's heroic struggle for existence. It was a life-and-death duel, and during the arduous period of convalescence, ensconced in isolation, he embarked on the audacious endeavor of assembling a musical ensemble that would later be christened as Chesterwhite. Their debut drew comparisons to luminaries like David Bowie and T-Rex, infused with a dystopian tincture. The album wove a tapestry of a science-fiction odyssey, inspired by Donny's own life as a cancer survivor grappling with the tempestuous throes of a toxic relationship. Simultaneously, Donny was cultivating a sterling reputation behind the scenes. He lent his songcraft to a diverse array of artists, and initiated a foray into the realm of bespoke musical compositions for television and commercials. The astonishing journey of singer, songwriter, and producer Donny Dykowsky unfolds in a sequence of sonic metamorphoses. Having weathered the crucible of cancer, endured tumultuous relationships, and embraced the mantle of fatherhood, Donny emerges on the other side with a voice that is both vulnerable and brimming with vitality. His latest offering, the eponymous EP "Mirrors On The Moon," balances precariously on the precipice of psych-rock and harmonious American. Donny joined Keith in Thunderlove Studio to have a chat. This is their conversation. Ugly American Werewolf in London: KISS - Live For The Last Time

When you become a father, you do things for your kids - even things you once said you'd never do again. That's exactly what The Wolf did when he took the Wolfcub to see KISS on their interminable End Of The Road Tour for the third time in five years. He wanted her to have the experience of a KISS live show with all its bombast, pyrotechnics and visual overload. Though she saw them twice in 2019 (Louisville and London) she was a bit young and couldn't make it through the whole show. And though they had tickets to see them in Amsterdam, they moved back to the US before they could attend. So while The Wolf once said in the early 2000's "I've seen KISS 6x, I'm not seeing them live ever again" he has relented 3x so his beloved Wolfcub could see first hand what a KISS live show was all about. Action Jackson asks The Wolf about all the details seasoned KISS fans expect like the Demon spitting blood, fire and flying through the air. Seeing Starchild up close on the b-stage was the highlight for our young KISS fan! And for The Wolf, he has checked this box enough - though happy he had the chance to experience the show with his favorite rock fan, he's ready to close the book on KISS live. Or is he... What Difference Does It Make: Happy Movember

It's the most wonderful time of the year...at least for those allowed to grow a moustache in the month of November, aka Movember. The reason for this moustache celebration is because two Aussies (Travis Garone and Luke Slattery) wanted to create awareness for men's health issues. Cut to twenty years later, and the movement is bigger than ever. To celebrate the month, we invited Max Skinner, Community Development Manager representing Movember. We talk about the history, the ideas, and the causes they support. Of course, we also talk about our favorite musicians and songs that best represent the 'mo. Dave has a page set up for Movember donations Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

S3 Ep 38Rock is Lit: Music, Mystery & Mountains: The Appalachian Influence in Emily Alice Katz’s Rockin’ Short Story “A Wayfarer at Devil’s Elbow”

In this episode we’re straying from the rock novels camp to talk about a single short story, entitled “A Wayfarer at Devil’s Elbow,” written by North Carolina author, Pushcart Prize nominee, and musician Emily Alice Katz. The story, which appears in the new online issue of ‘North Carolina Literary Review’ was a finalist in the 2022 Doris Betts Fiction Prize, an annual competition sponsored by the North Carolina Writers’ Network, with winning entries and some finalists published in ‘NCLR’. Full disclosure: I serve as Senior Associate Editor of the journal. You can find a link in the show notes to the new issue of ‘NCLR’, where you can read Emily’s story and all the other amazing stories, essays, and poetry in the issue. Emily Alice Katz’s short fiction has appeared in such literary journals as ‘North Carolina Literary Review,’ ‘Salamander’, ‘Jelly Bucket’, ‘Meridian’, ‘South Carolina Review’, and ‘storySouth’. Her short story collection, ‘The Book of Nut and Other Stories’, was designated a finalist for the 2019 Eludia Award. And her short story “Little Hen” is included in the 2022 anthology ‘Frankly Feminist: Short Stories by Jewish Women from “Lilith Magazine”.’ She has a PhD in modern Jewish studies from the Jewish Theological Seminary. Her book, 'Bringing Zion Home: Israel in American Jewish Culture, 1948-1967', was published in 2015. “A Wayfarer at Devil’s Elbow” follows a young music journalist in her quest to locate and interview an obscure 1970s experimental rock musician from the mountains of North Carolina, Nyssa Adcock, who has fallen off the musical map and become a recluse and a bit of a rock ‘n roll mystery. Fans of this period in music history and Appalachian literature and lore will be enchanted by the story, an excerpt from which Emily reads at the beginning of the episode, and our discussion. You’ll also hear an abundance of Appalachian music as well as Emily’s own music. See the playlist below. First Concert Memories #4: Ace Frehley with Sonny Pooni of Growin Up Rock

E

KISS was so important to your hosts, The Wolf & Action Jackson, as part of the foundation of their love of rock n roll, live music and their friendship. That's why they invited Tom & Zeus from Shout It Out Loudcast to come on the premier episode of First Concert Memories, our monthly sidecast, and talk about the first time they saw KISS. For FCM 4, we welcome back Sonny "Hollywood" Pooni of Grown Up Rock Podcast and The Album Review Crew to talk about the first time he ever saw legendary KISS lead guitarist Ace Frehley play live. The Wolf and Action saw Ace as a solo act in the 1990s but Sonny saw him as a co-headliner with Y&T in 1987 and he shares with us how important it was to him to see Ace. Sonny go into KISS during the Asylum era and then learned that KISS used to have makeup and had different members of the band. From there he picked up Ace's first solo effort (aside from the 1978 KISS solo albums) Frehley's Comet and it furthered endeared him to Ace's style. Ace famously has had bouts with drugs and alcohol and Sonny relates a story of seeing Ace fall off the stage as well as why the band was so much better with Tod Howarth than in later years without him. If you've seen Ace recently, odds are you were disappointed as he seems a shell of his former self. That's why we wanted to share some memories from when Ace was still in strong form and delivering solid live shows. Sonny is opinionated and you'll hear all his takes on Ace, the shows he has seen and he even provided a bootleg recording of the show which is an FCM first! All Ace Frehley and KISS fans will love this one! Visit Sonny on Twitter (X) and listen to Growin Up Rock wherever you get your podcasts! The Metallica Report - Episode 14: Week of November 1, 2023

This week on The Metallica Report… Hot on the heels of last week’s Halloween celebration with a special Hammett-horror-episode, listeners report what their favorite fright-night feature film is. We have a couple of nuggets from the recently published in-depth and wide-ranging conversation between Steffan and Lars for the band’s online magazine, So What! As the oft-debated St. Anger celebrates its 20th anniversary, Steff acknowledges that, much like that album, 72 Seasons has entered the world following a comparable stretch of unease and uncertainty. With the benefit of hindsight, Lars compares this era’s ability to accept and navigate obstacles with Metallica’s past turmoil. And with stops in St. Louis and Detroit right around the corner, Steffan and Renée catch up with a few stalwarts of the fan club. Tara Paddock and Kurt Schwarz, local chapter heads of Missouri’s Burnt Ends of Sanity and The Struggle Within Michigan, respectively, are joined by family-favorite Metallica Mom Sarah Sobeck, who has a minivan of international fans joining her and her husband, Pete, on their Metalli-travels. The three share what it’s like to live within the inclusive and supportive global community that Metallica has inspired. Comes A Time: Oteil is Back from Tour and Mike is On the Road Again

In this hilarious episode of Comes a Time, Mike and Oteil dive into stories from Oteil's recent tour, including an epic night where he dressed up as Macho Man Randy Savage. Oteil describes committing fully to the outfit, despite how hot and restrictive the costume was, and cutting promos in character as he made his way through the crowd to the stage. He even had his tour manager Jake come out as Jake "The Snake" Roberts for the full WWE experience. Mike is thrilled to hear about Oteil embracing his silly side on tour. Mike and Oteil discuss the unique acoustics and visual experience of playing the Las Vegas Sphere, a brand new, state-of-the-art immersive venue opening soon. With no on-stage amps or monitors, the venue itself becomes the sound system. They fantasize about collaborating with visual artist Jonathan Singer to create a mind-blowing psychedelic show inside the Sphere. Oteil also shares stories of combat gigs dealing with bad sound, and how veteran performers like Elvin Jones project their sound to the back of big rooms. Looking ahead, Oteil only has one gig on the books for the rest of the year - two nights opening for Bob Weir in Florida. Otherwise, he's focused on spending the holidays with his family. Mike has stand-up shows across the country leading up to the release of his new comedy special "Don't Let Me Down" on YouTube on November 9th. Famous & Gravy: Lord of Horror (Christopher Lee)

He was a physically towering British movie actor with distinguished good looks, a Shakespearean voice, and aristocratic presence. His breakthrough film was the horror movie “The Curse of Frankenstein.” Though closely associated with horror, he maintained that of his roughly 250 movie and television roles, only 15 or so had been in horror films. Even into his 70s and 80s, he could strike fear in the hearts of moviegoers. He played the treacherous light-saber-wielding villain Count Dooku in the “Star Wars” installments, and the dangerously charismatic wizard Saruman in the “Lord of the Rings” and “Hobbit” movies.
