The Metallica Report: Episode 12 - Week of October 18, 2023
This week on The Metallica Report… Steffan and Renée chat with two of the band’s long-time collaborators: graphic artist Tony Squindo and co-founding member of Goodnight, Texas, Avi Vinocur. Plus, Kirk chimes in about his bluesy, down-and-dirty guitar solo on Goodnight, Texas’ new song, “Runaways.” Avi fills us in on his unlikely journey from a humble studio runner to Metallica’s go-to side-man for special projects like the All Within My Hands benefit concerts, S&M2 with the San Francisco Symphony, and even an appearance on Howard Stern. Recently, the tables turned, and Avi’s band became the hosts of a special guest musician: our own Kirk Hammett. Tony Squindo - whose art has graced many a Metallica t-shirt, poster, and even a Monopoly game - chats with Renée about the evolution of his work for the band. The man who once published a book called “Year of the Skull” talks about his fondness for revisiting his previous pieces and shares his favorite thing he’s ever created for a member of Metallica. S3 Ep 37Rock is Lit: Rememberin' & Rockin' to the 1980s Cult Classic Film 'Eddie and The Cruisers' with Sherry Thomas
In this episode, my friend Sherry Thomas and I are talking ‘Eddie and the Cruisers’, the 1983 cult classic film about a fictional early 1960s rock ‘n roll band on the rise that virtually disappeared from the airwaves after their lead singer, Eddie Wilson, supposedly died in a car wreck following a dispute over the band’s experimental second album, which was never released. Almost 20 years pass, and Eddie and the Cruisers are back on the charts, thanks to a renewed interest in ‘60s pop culture and music, and a journalist decides to go on a mission to find out what really happened to Eddie and the unreleased album. Enjoy Sherry’s and my conversation about our experience with the film—first as teenagers when the movie debuted, then again recently, as adults—and our lasting love affair with not only the movie but also the soundtrack by John Cafferty & the Beaver Brown Band. I should warn listeners that there will be spoilers in this episode. I'm In Love With That Song podcast: Bloodrock - "D.O.A."
Welcome to our 2nd Sort-Of Annual Halloween episode! This time we're exploring the gory details of "D.O.A." by Bloodrock, one of the most gruesome songs to ever make the charts. In predictable fashion, a song almost designed to get banned from radio & freak out your parents in the '70's, the song predictably became a Top 40 hit. "D.O.A." Ep 170Love That Album Episode 170 - Suzanne Vega "99.9F"
There are some artists who make a career of changing their musical styles between albums. They took risks to remain artistically relevant or just because they don’t want to repeat themselves. David Bowie, Bob Dylan, Wilco, The Beatles, John Cale, XTC are all examples…..a ton of others could be nominated. Let’s talk about Suzanne Vega. Welcome to episode 170 of Love That Album podcast. From the mid-80s, Suzanne Vega had recorded some great records featuring songs that sounded like a mix of old school folk and polished pop. She wrote songs of domestic abuse, changes in her personal life, love lost, and her favourite coffee shop in NYC. Then after the unexpected success of a couple of producers remixing her “coffee shop” song, “Tom’s Diner”, she wanted to explore other options to how her recorded music would sound. She chose the exciting producer of the moment, Mitchell Froom, to help her record something that would sound different to previous albums, and the result was “99.9F” released in 1992. Her personal style of songwriting hadn’t altered, but it’s the arrangements and the production that make this album sound a world away from the debut eponymous album released just a few years earlier. I’m joined by two new guests to discuss this album and a bunch of peripheral subjects. First up is Eric Senich, host of the terrific Booked On Rock podcast – dedicated to the discussion of music books with authors. I’m also joined by the wonderful author, Lisa Torem, who has released 3 books in the On Track series of books – the latest one being on the discography of Suzanne Vega. Together, we look through the themes of 99.9F, how it changed from the sound of her earlier records, determining if the art is in the songwriting or the recording, and whether one temperature scale is more erotic than another. My gratitude to Lisa and Eric for being such wonderful guests, and look forward to having them on the show again. You can go through Eric’s podcast back catalogue at https://www.bookedonrock.com/ or you can subscribe on all the usual podcast platforms – perfect for deciding what your next music book should be. Imbalanced History: I Hear Dead People
ECan anyone help us identify ALL of the members of this increasingly infamous I Hear Dead People illustration. The original, and the basis for this episode's discussion, is from a flickr post, entitled, "Eu ouco gente morta...o tempo todo!" Since then, we have seen it in other posts, including in English labelled as "I hear dead people, and they're still the best!" But that use of the illustration is trimmed, with a few people knocked out of the frame. So we stuck with the best version, even after finding version #3, which has some of the same people, or the same people at a different age than in the original, and also some other, different people that weren't in the flickr version. Having muddied that up, we do need some help to zero in on two of the faces, and total help on one of them. Find out who's who inside the episode! Ugly American Werewolf in London: Steve Kilbey of The Church
EFor our 150th episode (and thanks to all of our loyal listeners in the UK, the Netherlands, the US and around the world for helping us get this far) we are pleased to welcome a singer/songwriter who we grew up watching on MTV with his band The Church - Steve Kilbey. For more than 40 years Steve's led Australian psychedelic rock band The Church and has returned to the US to promote their latest record, The Hypnogogue, which Steve admits could be their 25th or 36th record - it's hard to add them all up. The Church rose to prominence in the US in 1988 thanks to MTV's 120 Minutes and college radio as their album Starfish received exposure thanks to the hit Under The Milky Way. But the band had already seen success in their home country with songs like The Unguarded Moment and Tantalized and we discuss the difficulty Steve has in curating a setlist which is satisfactory to him, the band and their fans. Steve pulls no punches talking about the business, his "too cool" attitude when doing TV interviews back in the day, his reluctance to release live albums and regales us with stories including one when two fans broke into the dressing room to demand he play one more song. Steve is an incredible songwriter and a very genuine person and you'll hear the joy The Wolf & Action Jackson had spending a little time talking with him. Thanks to everyone for listening, subscribing and downloading The Ugly American Werewolf in London Rock Podcast! Steven has written for Guitar Player, Guitar World and many other Rock publications. He has authored numerous books about rock legends Jeff Beck, Prince, Bruce Springsteen, Black Sabbath, Free/Bad Company and Randy Rhoads. Here is PART 2 of our conversation. We begin PART 2 with the Sammy Hagar era. We discuss with Eddie's search for a new singer and his feelings about Sammy during the 'Honeymoon' period. Comes A Time: Brandon Ross of LightShed Ventures
This episode of Comes a Time featured an insightful discussion with tech and media analyst Brandon Ross of LightShed Ventures. As an expert on new technologies like AI, Ross provided a nuanced perspective on both the positives and potential pitfalls. He emphasized that while AI is advancing rapidly, authentic human artistry and creativity connecting with an audience remains irreplaceable. The conversation explored how technology immersing our lives can make shared live experiences more valued. Ross drew an analogy to professional wrestling, where improvisation and crowd connection can enable performers to creatively rise above limitations. Similarly, as industries like music and comedy navigate disruption, adapting with flexibility and seizing new opportunities is key. Overall, Ross struck an optimistic tone about human resilience, believing technology may drive people back to nature and real connections. With balanced wisdom, he maintains we can thoughtfully guide technology’s double-edged potential. https://twitter.com/BrandoLightShed https://signal.nfx.com/investors/brandon-ross A Time Podcast and content posted by Comes A Time is presented solely for general informational, educational, and entertainment purposes. Shout It Out Loudcast: Album Review Crew "Trash"
EOn the 45th Episode of the Album Review Crew of Shout It Out Loudcast, Tom, Zeus & Sonny review Alice Cooper's 1989 successful comeback album, "Trash." Trash was Alice Cooper's 11th solo studio album. The album was a commercial hit, going platinum and selling over two million albums. The album also reached number 20 on the US Billboard album charts. To complete his comeback, Alice enlisted the 80's hit songwriter at the time, Desmond Child. Child not only produced the album, but also co-wrote 9 of the 10 songs on the album. Mutual friends like Jon Bon Jovi, Richie Sambora and Aerosmith's Steven Tyler, Joe Perry, Tom Hamilton and Joey Kramer also made appearances. The album was a complete dive into the "hair metal scene." The songs contained Alice's unique vocals, personality and snarl combined with the Desmond Child's songwriting style. As usual the boys breakdown and dissect the tracks and rank the songs. They then rank the album and the album cover against the previous 43 albums reviewed on the Album Review Crew. This was Sonny's pick. Find out if this Maniac Sonny's pick is Poison, Trash or a Spark In The Dark! Ugly American Werewolf in London: On First Listen - Brain Salad Surgery by Emerson, Lake & Palmer
The Wolf and Action Jackson thirst for knowledge about rock n roll. The bands, the musicians, the albums, the songs, the studios, the history - we want to know it all!! But no one knows everything, we all have blind spots. So as a way to further our own knowledge and understanding of rock music, we've developed a new, somewhat regular segment we call On First Listen. Here we take an album that we've never listened to and give it our usual track x track evaluation. Everyone has albums that they've always been curious about or have seen on Top 50 lists or had a friend swear is the best kept secret on the planet but for whatever reason, you've never heard it. We kick off this new series with 1973's Brain Salad Surgery by Emerson, Lake & Palmer. Our heroes were late to the prog landscape and when they first got into music via MTV in the 1980s, Genesis and Yes were pop bands, not prog rock giants. The boys didn't really come to appreciate progressive rock until later in life. However, Carl Palmer (the Palmer in Emerson, Lake & Palmer) they had familiarity with through his work in Asia and he was a guest on UAWIL #80. But the The Wolf & Action had never listened to the album Carl called his favorite in ELP, Brain Salad Surgery. They were familiar with the cover by HR Giger (Alien) but didn't see the hidden pictures from the original work of art. Nor did they know the meaning of Brain Salad Surgery (we get into it). And though they knew their song that started, "Welcome back my friends to the show that never ends" they had no idea what the name of the song was (Karn Evil 9 First Impression Part 2 doesn't exactly roll off the tongue). Despite all that it is considered one of the true prog masterpieces of all time. So the boys set out to explore what Keith Emerson, Greg Lake and Carl Palmer were up to in 1973. Will it become an instant favorite? Or will it be something they appreciate but never listen to again? You'll have to listen to find out what they think about ELP's 1973 classic. S3 Ep 36Rock is Lit: From ‘60s Southern Rock to Nina Simone’s Soul: Peter McDade on His Rock Novel ‘Songs by Honeybird’ with Alan Light on His Bio of Nina Simone, ‘What Happened, Miss Simone?’
We’re starting Season 3 with a bang. Peter McDade is here to talk about his novel ‘Songs by Honeybird’, a story that features a fictional integrated rock band from 1960s Macon, Georgia, that fell off the musical map after a fire killed the lead singer and guitarist and also . . . possibly, the band’s African American drummer. To put it more succinctly, ‘Songs by Honeybird’ is about a band, a romantic break-up, a Ph.D candidate in History’s research, secrets, fathers, racism, Atlanta, the sixties and the repercussions the South still feels from that period, and . . . a talking dog. In the last segment of the episode Alan Light joins me to talk about musician, civil rights activist, and my fellow native-North Carolinian Nina Simone. The reason I’ve roped Alan into popping in is because one of the two main characters in ‘Songs by Honeybird’, the piano-playing Nina, is named after the legendary artist. Alan is a rock critic, journalist, former editor-in-chief of ‘Spin’ and ‘Vibe’ magazines, a former senior writer at ‘Rolling Stone’, and author of the book ‘What Happened, Miss Simone?’, a biography of Nina Simone inspired by the Academy Award-nominated Netflix documentary of the same title. You won’t want to miss our convo. Subscribe to my YouTube channel, @ChristyHallberg, to catch the upcoming YouTube-only full interview with Alan Light about Nina Simone. The Metallica Report - Episode 10: Week of October 4, 2023
This week on The Metallica Report… It’s all about Power Trip, this weekend’s massive hard rock festival cranking up at the Empire Polo Club in Indio, CA. Gracing the bill of the three-day fest are Guns N’ Roses, Iron Maiden, AC/DC, Judas Priest, Tool, and, of course, Metallica. It’s hard to imagine now, but Metallica wasn’t always on the poster, let alone at the top! James reflects on the band’s festival journey and what it’s felt like to “move up the ladder.” Lars recounts 2016’s Desert Trip, the festival featuring legends like Paul McCartney, The Rolling Stones, and Bob Dylan that inspired this weekend’s hard rock event. He addresses his admiration for his Power Trip co-headliners and his excitement to get this group of bands in one place. And finally, he touches on his relationship with Guns N’ Roses over the decades and how, yes… he would like to hang out with Axl over a cup of tea!
