In this episode, Rich and Clint discuss some of the ways in which artificial intelligence is transforming the music industry — the creation of music and how we consume it. What are the legal implications of AI-generated compositions that are created by neural networks that ingest and learn from source material by actual artists? Is it a force for good? Or evil? Ever wanted teo hear Frank Sinatra sing an Oasis song? Or hear Freddie Mercury sing a Beatles song? On the phone this week in entertainment lawyer Rose Meade Hart to provide a glimpse of the wild west created by AI. Proudly part of the Pantheon Podcast network. Learn more about your ad choices. Metal Mayhem ROC:Rik Emmett: New Memoir, Why TRIUMPH Broke, US Festival in '83

Hello Metalheads! On this episode, we’re joined by Rik Emmett, the legendary vocalist & guitar player of Canadian power trio Triumph. He joined us to talk about his new memoir, titled “Lay It On The Line: A Backstage Pass To Rock Adventure, Conflict & Triumph”. In our conversation, we learn all about the unique roles he, Mike & Gil all played, outside of the musicianship itself, in Triumph & he tells the full story about the rise to success, the peak of their career, his eventual exit & just why that happened. Also, he shares the emotional story about how his dying Brother became the catalyst for reconciling with his bandmates after many years of bad blood, which ultimately led them to several reunion concerts in 2008. Rik takes us on some funny journeys through many of his more memorable concerts in the heyday (Buffalo, New Jersey & Long Island just to name a few) & the Spinal Tap-like experiences of Rocklahoma, OK in 2008 . Only Three Lads - Classic Alternative Music Podcast: Top 5 Shoegaze EPs (with Archie Moore from Velocity Girl)

E

Yes, it's the "S-word." Shoegaze...of all the media fabricated sub-genres that we talk about on O3L, this is one of the most polarizing. The term was coined with some derision about the crop of artists that came up in the late '80s/early '90s who spent much of their stage time looking down at their effects pedals. Even many of the bands who are most closely associated with the term rebuke the label. On the other hand, the word conjures up a glorious, beloved sound that continues to resonate with musicians and fans to this day: walls of woozy, beautifully sculpted guitar noise, drowned out but ethereal vocals, dreamy, insistent beats, all bathed in swathes of reverb and echo. The Extended Play (EP) was a format that was well suited for this music, so that's our focus on this episode. While we may associate the heyday of shoegaze with the amazing groups that burst onto the UK scene, its influence spread across the pond. Case in point is our Third Lad this week, guitarist Archie Moore, who spent the first part of the '90s simultaneously in THREE seminal Washington, D.C. area bands who took cues from fizzy UK indie - Black Tambourine, Lilys, and Velocity Girl. If that wasn't enough, Archie and his friends also co-founded one of the legendary American indie labels, Slumberland Records. Velocity Girl was the stuff that '90s indie pop dreams are made of: Named after one of the coolest songs, fronted by the impossibly cool Sarah Shannon, recording for one of the coolest labels (Sub Pop), staples of alternative radio and MTV's 120 Minutes with hits like "My Forgotten Favorite" (also prominently featured on the Clueless soundtrack), "Crazy Town," "Sorry Again," and "I Can't Stop Smiling." We caught up with Archie the day after Velocity Girl's first gig in 21 years at the anniversary bash for legendary D.C. club The Black Cat. They also will be playing the Bowery Ballroom in New York on September 30th before returning to The Black Cat on December 1st. Catch them if you can! Ep 109See Hear - Interview with Steve Matteo about Act Naturally:The Beatles On Film

There was a time when the rock and roll star appearance in a film ostensibly as themselves (or a variant) was a given. Think of the films of Elvis Presley or Cliff Richard. Before the Warholian expression of 15 minutes of fame became a thing, the pop music film was a way to make the most of the latest populist puppet’s time in the sun – script be damned, musician’s longevity be damned. “Let’s just give the kids what they want and reap the benefits before the next pretty face we can exploit”. I’m sure that was the studio mantra. The Beatles were gonna be part of that machine….yet something different happened. Welcome to See Hear Podcast episode 109. The Beatles got signed to a 3 film deal with United Artists, and in 1964 released what has been called the Citizen Kane of rock and roll films, A Hard Day’s Night. People have been arguing the merits of their filmic output ever since. This year, author Steve Matteo has released a book called Act Naturally: The Beatles On Film where he focuses on the Fabs as film stars. He looks at the making of each of their 5 films giving credit to their collaborators, as well as putting the films into social context (what else was happening in British cinema at the time). Unfortunately, neither Kerry nor Tim was available to join me on this conversation, but Steve and I had a terrific time talking about his book and all things Beatle-films.....and many things Beatle adjacent. I also make a confession that will have film buffs gathering their pitchforks and hunting me down – I stand by my contention. Thanks hugely to Steve for a very entertaining conversation. I hope to have him back for a round table at some stage. The book Act Naturally: The Beatles On Film is available at all the usual virtual and physical bookstores. It comes with the See Hear stamp of approval. If you’ve been enjoying the show, please consider giving us a favourable review on iTunes and let your friends know that our show exists. Love That Album - Interview with Pauline Bailey, author of Blues Portrait – A Profile of the Australian Blues Scene

Buddy Guy put out an album in 1991 called Damn Right I Got The Blues. The song sounds like so much of a form of catharsis. However, blues can also represent a form of celebration. There's pre-war country blues, jump blues, swamp blues.... There's blues styles from Chicago, Texas, Louisiana and other American regions. The blues is not one thing. It's old...it's contemporary. It's relaxed...it's heart pumping. It has old and young practitioners. It has iconic practitioners and some bloke playing it at your local pub. Welcome to episode 169 of Love That Album. Obviously, the most famous blues musicians are those from the US and from the UK. Here in Australia, however, there's been a long tradition of musicians who've devoted themselves to the blues, be it through the pre-war stylings of The Paramount Trio, the Chicago style of Collard Greens and Gravy or....the hard-boogie style of Carson. Blues lovers here believe that there is something uniquely Australian about how blues is performed here....tyranny of distance making it gritty or something like that. In 2019, artist and blues lover Pauline Bailey took it upon herself to record an oral history of Australian blues by speaking to a plethora (as Max Crawdaddy would have it) of musicians about their connection to local blues music. In 2023, Pauline has just released Volume 4 of these incredible books with no intention of stopping. Many are well known (Diesel, Jeff Lang, Ross Wilson, Mal Eastick, Mike Rudd), some not so much......all have fascinating stories to tell about how music came into their lives, how they've pursued it, and where it took them. These books are an invaluable resource into a side of Australian music history not previously tackled. The books even feature chapters devoted to some past LTA guests (Shane Pacey, Charles Jenkins, Anthony Shortte, Sarah Carroll, and Chris Wilson). My huge thanks to Pauline for joining me to discuss her work and her devotion to the music and stylists she's immortalised in print. If you wish to grab a copy of any of her books, you can track them down at https://store15455084.ecwid.com/Books-c40041069 Download this episode of LTA from your podcast app of choice. Ugly American Werewolf in London: Yes - 90125

To hardcore fans of Yes, 1983's 90125 was a big departure from their progressive rock sound of the 1970s. But for the MTV generation, it was our first introduction to Yes and the immense talent within the band. Driven by new member Trevor Rabin as the guitarist, sometime lead vocalist & dominant songwriter and former lead singer Trevor Horn as producer, Yes went in a more commercial and pop direction. Anchored by the return of singer Jon Anderson, stalwart Chris Squire on bass, long time drummer Alan White and returning member Tony Kaye on keyboards, they sold more than 3 million copies in the US and were all over MTV thanks to Owner of a Lonely Heart. But what did the progressive rock Yes fans think about 90125? Was it too far a departure from their prog rock roots? Was the guitar too heavy compared to the picking of Steve Howe? UK fans didn't embrace this album like the US fans did and now Yes, led by Steve Howe who was in supergroup Asia during the recording of 90125, don't play songs from this record. Owner of a Lonely Heart hit #1 in the US but ony #28 in the UK and the rest of the videos were seen more in the US than England. We go track by track, review all the videos and talk about the politics and lineup changes that are very much a part of the legacy of Yes as 90125 turns 40 November 11, 2023. Shout It Out Loudcast: "Sonic Boom"

E

This week Tom & Zeus review the 2009 KISS album, "Sonic Boom." This was KISS' 19th studio album and the 20th KISS studio album reviewed by SIOL. Sonic Boom was the first studio album by KISS in 11 years. It was the first to feature the current KISS lineup of Gene Simmons, Paul Stanley, Eric Singer & Tommy Thayer. The album was produced by Paul Stanley and Greg Collins. The band wanted to show that they can "still knock out anybody who's out there." The album had no outside writes and both Eric Singer and Tommy Thayer had their first lead vocals on a KISS song on Sonic Boom. They played some on these songs on tour for the album and "Say Yeah" is still played today on the End Of The Road Tour. The album cover was from Michael Doret, who previously created the cover to KISS' "Rock And Roll Over." The album came with a bonus CD called KISS Klassics, which was a re-recording of some of KISS' greatest hit by the current KISS lineup. A third disc contained a six-song live DVD recorded in Bueno Aires, Argentina on April 5, 2009. As usual the guys breakdown and analyze the tracks and rank the songs SIOL style. As always, they then compare the album and album cover and rank it against the previous studio albums reviewed. So tune it to find out the answer to these important questions like: Who is right or wrong about the KISS song, "Stand." Why is Britney Spears gassy? Who is sending T&Z all these great Emails? Prisoners of Rock and Roll - When Celebrities Sing

In this episode of Prisoners of Rock and Roll, we’re taking a look at celebrities who make music. Now, a lot of famous people have decided to make albums over the years. Some of them dabble in rock and roll on the side like a lot of us and use their celebrity status to get an album recorded. Others might have had gotten some misguided advice from someone in their inner circle telling them that releasing an album is a great way to increase their profile or make a quick buck. We spent a lot of time looking for and listening to music for this one, and we’ve put together a pretty solid list of celebrities who released albums, including a few that might make you say, “wait, THEY released an album?” We uncovered a lot of stuff for this one – and some of it should have stayed where we found it. A few of these albums have been scrubbed from streaming platforms but luckily the Internet is forever. But some of these tunes aren’t bad either. So settle in and join us as we look into the sometimes bizarre world of celebrity music. Hear More Check out the episode playlist. Ugly American Werewolf in London: Genesis - Genesis 1983

As 10 years olds in 1983, Genesis self-titled album was our introduction to the band with singles & MTV videos like Mama, That's All & Illegal Alien. We had no awareness of the band as prog superstars in the 1970s with Peter Gabriel & Steve Hackett and would only learn of that incarnation later in life. Phil Collins solo career was also on a huge upward swing after the release of Face Value (1980) and Hello I Must Be Going (1982). When Phil, Mike Rutherford and Tony Banks reconvened Genesis the band was gaining momentum from all sides and since they decided for the first time to credit all music to everyone equally, they felt the eponymous title made sense for a record they collaborated on together with fewer self-penned ideas coming in. But where does it stand in their legacy? They've eschewed the lengthy prog songs they wrote in the 70s for shorter, more pop friendly melodies. While Phil Collins singing and drumming were both strong on this album, are all these songs discernible from what he was doing in his solo career? Were they trading success for the ubiquity that would follow with Collins next solo release No Jacket Required (25 million sold) and their 1986 record Invisible Touch (over 15 million sold)? And what were they thinking with Illegal Alien? Would the adult contemporary/middle-of-the-roadness of this album define their sound and the image of Phil as a solo artist? We dive into all that as Genesis (1983) turns 40 on October 3. Ugly American Werewolf in London Website Ugly American Werewolf in London Store - Get your Wolf merch! Metal Mayhem ROC: Ronnie Romero- New solo album, Elegant Weapons & playing with Blackmore & Schenker.

On this week’s show, we’re joined by melodic rock Vocalist Ronnie Romero, an artist who got his name on the heavy metal map debuting as Singer of Richie Blackmore’s Rainbow, followed by an extensive stint with Michael Schenker. Raised in Chile, lived in Spain, and now resides in Romania, he is truly a Global musician & hands down is the hardest working man in the rock business! In 2023 alone he released his second all-covers album, toured Europe with the Rock Meets Classic ensemble, plus the band he co-leads with Richie Faulkner, Elegant Weapons, released their debut album & toured the European Summer festival circuit. And if that wasn’t enough, he’s just released his brand-new solo album “Too Many Lies, Too Many Masters”, a labor of love Ronnie put all of his heart & soul into! In this episode Ronnie shares a lot about his intentions for 2023 and in the future, as he takes his first big step into taking on all aspects of his musical career on his own, from the song writing to the producing, managing of his Brand, etc. & we take an in-depth look at the songs on the new album. Also, he talks all about the overwhelming response received from playing the new Elegant Weapons material to massive audiences, many who had likely never heard a song before & impromptu approach in selecting cover songs to add to the setlist. Ronnie reveals just how he got into music (it was a family affair, as his Grandfather led a Big Band Orchestra & his Dad was the Crooner), the privilege of working with so many major artists in such a short period of his career, and how he’s been able to put out so much material in the last 10 years. In addition, we hear about his passion for CD shopping (something he still does on a regular basis as he travels the globe!), his philosophy for only picking deep cuts for his latest covers albums, how his wife ended up as the Model on the album covers, and he reveals a big answer to an important question sent in from a Listener about the future of Elegant Weapons. And of course, we couldn’t leave the conversation without talking about his experiences and impressions of both guitar gods (Blackmore & Schenker), as Ronnie reflects back on just what he learned from his mentors, plus he’s sharing a great story of his time playing soccer with the Rainbow crew. Another example of a great, unique, conversation filled with in-depth anecdotes and disclosures found only here at Metal Mayhem ROC. Thank you for the support and remember to always KEEP IT HEAVY! Ep 75Banned Biographies - The Rise And Fall And Rise Again: A Brief History of Madness (Part 1)

E

In 1976 school friends Mike Barson and Lee Thompson formed a band called the North London Invaders, roping in other friends of theirs Chris Foreman, John Hasler and Cathal Smyth to play rock n roll and soul songs. The line-up was a tumultuous one and only solidified two years later when Hasler was eventually replaced on drums by Daniel Woodgate, Mark Bedford replacing Smyth on bass with Smyth becoming a brass player, dancer and singer and lead singer Graham McPherson aka Suggs finally decided to commit rather than watch Chelsea play football. They also adopted a new name, Madness, after a song by ska/reggae legend Prince Buster. Thus was born a band that became one of the most prominent bands of the late 1970s and early 1980s two-tone ska revival. Madness have had 16 singles reach the UK top ten and between 1980 to 1986, the band's songs spent a total of 214 weeks on the UK Singles Chart. Their music videos showcased them as a fun gang that kids and adults alike wanted to be a part of with flying saxophonists and nutty trains. But, behind the scenes in-fighting and constantly butting up against their label boss, as well as incredible success, put pressure on the band which caused rifts and breakups over the years. This episode of Banned Biographies deals with this heady first decade and the rise and fall of one of the most beloved British bands to ever strut their stuff. Rock is Lit: “Breath of the Wind”: Musician, Author & Yardbirds Drummer Jim McCarty’s Voyage Through Loss & Love

bonus

If you’ve ever had an interest in the paranormal, spirituality in general, or wondered if there’s life after death, if our consciousness does not end when our bodies do; if you’ve ever lost someone dear to you, felt the weight of grief, ached to connect with that person again and asked yourself . . . is there a chance—any chance at all—that I could reconnect with my loved one: What would you do to find out? How open would you be to embarking on a quest for the bigger picture? Yardbirds drummer and Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Jim McCarty made such a quest and wrote about it in his 2021 book ‘She Walks in Beauty’, a fascinating account of his endearing and enduring relationship with his beloved late wife, Lizzie, and his lifelong interest in the paranormal. He continues those themes in his brand new song, “Breath of the Wind,” from The Yardbirds’ UK label, Demon Music. Join us for a candid, poignant discussion about the personal and spiritual dimensions of Jim’s life and his relationship with Lizzie—before and after her death of cancer in 2020.
