Only Three Lads - Classic Alternative Music Podcast: Top 5 Songwriters with GRAHAM PARKER!
EThe Rolling Stones once intoned that "it's the singer, not the song"...but this week, it's all about the song, as we celebrate the great songwriters of the O3L era. What better way to do that than with one of THE all time great songwriters, the legendary Graham Parker?!? We're still pinching ourselves. Of course, you know his classic records with The Rumour like Howlin' Wind, Heat Treatment, and Squeezing Out Sparks, and songs like 'Silly Thing,' 'Hold Back The Night,' 'Hold Back The Night', 'Don't Ask Me Questions', 'Discovering Japan', 'Local Girls,' 'Life Gets Better,' 'Wake Up (Next To You),' and 'Get Started, Start A Fire.' But we're not here so much to look back at a remarkable past as we are to celebrate an artist who, 47 years into his recording career, is still relevant, vital and making some of his best music yet. His brilliant new album, Last Chance To Learn The Twist, was released on September 8th from our friends at Big Stir Records. The record was produced by GP & Tuck Nelson, and features his incredible backing band The Goldtops, backing singers The Lady Bugs and swinging brass from The Easy Access Orchestra. In this episode, you'll hear fascinating insights into the songwriting and recording processes for the new album, GP's songwriting inspirations, genres that don't exist, streaming, his biggest regret, and much more. And you'll be happy to know: THE GOUT IS ON ITS WAY OUT! About Graham Parker (edited from Mark Demming's intro in the All Music Guide): Stereotyped early in his career as the quintessential angry young man, Graham Parker was one of the most celebrated singer/songwriters to emerge from England in the '70s. Drawing heavily from Van Morrison and the Rolling Stones, Parker developed a sinewy fusion of driving rock & roll and confessional folk-rock, highlighted by his indignant passion, biting sarcasm, and bristling anger. At the outset of his career, his albums crackled with energy, snide witticisms, and perceptive insights, earning him a devoted following of fans and critics, who lavished praise on his debut, 1976's Howlin' Wind, recorded with the Rumour, his backing band of pub rock all-stars. After delivering Squeezing Out Sparks in 1979, which was a smash with critics and won him a larger audience in the United States, Parker courted a crossover career with solo projects such as 1982's Another Grey Area and 1985's Steady Nerves before settling into a cult following in the late '80s and continuing to garner critical acclaim as his music mellowed but his lyrical perspective stayed sharp. At the behest of filmmaker Judd Apatow, Parker reunited with the Rumour for his movie This Is 40, which led to concert tours and a pair of albums, 2012's Three Chords Good and 2015's Mystery Glue. After the Rumour reunion ran its course, Parker formed a new band, the Goldtops, playing easygoing but committed R&B-informed rock on 2018's Cloud Symbols and 2023's Last Chance to Learn the Twist. Technical note: We recorded this episode in two segments - we did our interview with GP first, and then reconvened a couple of nights later to record our top five lists (when Brett was sick and Uncle Gregg was at least a sheet and a half to the wind). Shout It Out Loudcast: Wasting Light"
EOn the 44th Episode of the Album Review Crew of Shout It Out Loudcast, Tom, Zeus & Sonny review the rock album from the Foo Fighters, "Wasting Light" Wasting Light was the Foo Fighters' 7th studio album. The album was a commercial and critical hit, winning 4 Grammys, including best rock album. The album went platinum and also became the Foo Fighters first album to go #1 on Billboards 200. Led by the biggest rock star in the past 30 years, Dave Grohl on guitar and vocals, the dual guitar players, Pat Smear & Chris Shiflett, bassist Nate Mendel and the lovable late bad ass drummer Taylor Hawkins. The lyrics were credited to the whole band, although Grohl was the main lyricist. The album had 6 singles and basically a music video for every song. The album reconnect the legendary producer Butch Vig of Nirvana's Nevermind fame with Dave Grohl. The band wanted a rawer sound and Dave convinced Vig and the band to record the album in his garage with analog equipment. Grohl wanted this album to define the Foo Fighters and to many he succeeded. As usual the boys breakdown and dissect the tracks and rank the songs. They then rank the album and the album cover against the previous 42 albums reviewed on the Album Review Crew. This was Tom's pick So tune in to see if Foo is Poo as Sonny predicted or if Tom was it A Matter Of Time before Tom gets a Rope and drags Sonny Back And Forth under a White Limo! Imbalanced History: The Devolution Of Devo
ENot one, but two sets of brothers formed a band in Ohio! That should have been the world's first warning that the plot to de-evolve EVERYTHING was hatching right there in Akron. In the pocket with Punk, era-wise, but markedly different from, well...everybody else, their mission required shunning norms! That was likely the case long before they donned their classic Devo yellow jumpsuits and plastic energy domes! Strange, sure! Quirky? They innovated a few of their own! Recently, finally announcing the end of their touring days, the d-volution, or de-volution, is nearly complete... Like the Stones, they never really got "Satisfaction" either. Yet, music has made their lives more awesome, and they freed young minds; both listeners, and budding musicians. We are living in the future, but we are not men, we are still Devo dammit!!! Ep 545Decibel Geek Podcast - The Best & Worst of Led Zeppelin Part 2 (1974-1982) - Ep544
EWe're back to discuss the second half of the Led Zeppelin discography as we pick our Best & Worst tracks from each album. Led Zeppelin's career from 1974-1982 was a period of great success, with the band releasing some of their most iconic albums, including Physical Graffiti, Presence, and In Through the Out Door. They also toured extensively during this time, playing to sold-out crowds around the world. However, the band's success was not without its challenges. In 1977, drummer John Bonham died suddenly, leaving the band devastated. They eventually regrouped and released one more album, Coda, in 1982, but they never fully recovered from Bonham's death. The band disbanded in 1980. In this episode we each pick what we think is the best song and worst song from each album during this period. Will we agree? Will we argue? You'll have to listen to find out! Let us know what YOUR best and worst songs are for each of these albums in the comments section! Ugly American Werewolf in London: The Yardbirds Jim McCarty Interview
The Yardbirds have an unparalleled legacy in the hallowed halls of rock n roll as they were one of the original British Invasion groups that brought the blues to the forefront of the rock scene in the 60s. The Wolf & Action Jackson became enamoured with them as teens in the 80s as the 60s had a big cultural renaissance and new CD box sets like Eric Clapton's Crossroads (which we cover in-depth on UAWIL 33 & 34). While the band is best known for their 3 famous guitarists - Clapton, Jeff Beck & Jimmy Page - the entire band deserves credit as top notch musicians and performers and Paul Samwell-Smith, Chris Dreja, Keith Relf and Jim McCarty are all members of the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame with their lead guitar members. We are so proud to welcome Jim McCarty of The Yardbirds to talk about his single Breath of the Wind which is available for digital download on September 15. Jim wrote the song for his late wife, Lizzie, and goes on to tell us about working mediums to help him see the end of life differently. We talk about playing with his band, how his lovely voice is a better fit for acoustic music than the raucous sounds he made with The Yardbirds, how he still enjoys playing live and some choice stories from the 1960s. It's a dream come true for 2 teenage rock fans who geeked out on The Yardbirds when they met 30+ years ago to interview this true gentleman and genuine rock legend. Metal Mayhem ROC: UFO Guitarist Paul Chapman's Daughter on " Growing Up Chapman"
Hello Rivet Heads, On this week’s show, we present a Truly unique look behind the "Metal Curtain" as we speak to Brittany Chapman, the daughter of the late Paul Chapman, Guitarist of UFO. This is her story we have dubbed " Growing up Chapman". Brittany is the youngest of Paul's 3 children via 4 marriages, as well as being the only girl. Since Paul's death in June of 2020, Brittany has received condolence’s and well wishes from fans and musicians from all over the world. The magnitude of her late father’s finger print on the global rock community has been humbling to say the least for Brittany. You see, to us fans, Paul Chapman was a "ROCK STAR", but to Brittany he was her dad. Brittany shares countless stories of her family upbringing with her father, Mother, Step Mother’s, step siblings, nine grandsons and two granddaughters. You really get a look at Paul Chapman”, THE DAD" with his love of cooking and music. His connection to all 4 of his wives and how he was able to keep a positive family unit together while combining step children with his own children. Brittany shares her admiration for her mother Cheryl whom she refers to as the real “GOAT” of the family. Fun stories include putting up with the passed-out road crew of L.A. glam band in her living room to late night shenanigans involving swords. Brittany reflects back on her dad's love of cooking. Always preparing big meals with guitar in hand, for friends and family. Family was everything to Paul. It wasn’t always easy, Paul wasn’t perfect, but he had a perfect heart and loved both his close family and his music family. Finally, Brittany shares the continuous reach out from Her Dad's colleagues. Phil Collen and Joe Elliot of Def Leppard, Billy Sheehan, Rudy Sarzo, Kirk Hammett, Nicko McBrain and Radio DJ Eddie Trunk. The list goes on and on... Paul touched all of these music giants in a way that Brittany is just now fully realizing. "Growing up Chapman '' is Brittany Chapman's story and it’s a Damn good one! Paul Chapman (9 June 1954 – 9 June 2020) was a Welsh rock guitarist best known for his work in bands such as UFO and Lone Star. Chapman first joined UFO in 1974-1975 as a second guitarist for the live shows. He left UFO in January 1975 and went on to form Lone Star. Chapman later rejoined UFO in December 1978 on a full-time basis. Chapman recorded his first album with UFO – No Place to Run – It was released in January 1980. Chapman remained in UFO until 1983 In 1984 he joined Waysted and recorded the albums The Good the Bad the Waysted and Save your Prayers. Chapman also went on to form a new band PCP (Paul Chapman Project) and in July 2006, Chapman joined the American southern rock band Gator Country, a collection of Molly Hatchet veterans. In 2015, Chapman went out for a 10-week US tour with the Swedish/Canadian band Killer Bee. Chapman died on his 66th birthday on 9 June 2020. He left two sons, a daughter, nine grandsons and two granddaughters. He was well known by his nickname "Tonka", allegedly acquired because of his indestructible qualities. R.I.P. Prisoners of Rock and Roll - That Song Stinks!
EIf you’re one of the thousands of people who listen to Prisoners of Rock and Roll – and shame on you if you aren’t – you know we do a segment in every episode called The Electric Chair where we kill a song for being terrible. Now, there’s a lot of awesome music out there. But let’s face it: there’s a lot of bad music too. So much bad music that this episode of Prisoners of Rock and Roll is volume 2 of a show totally dedicated to talking about music that sucks. We have spent hours plumbing the depths of music We also asked our awesome listeners and some of our podcast friends to submit their picks for the most cringe-inducing tracks out there and man, did they deliver. Get ready go groan and say, “oh no, not THAT song” as we plumb the depths of music hell for songs have left scars on our music souls. Yacht rock, southern rap, novelty songs, one hit wonders, dance tracks, and just plan bad music. It’s all here. Parental advisory on this one rock and rollers. Having to listen to some of these songs made us pretty angry. Special shout out to Set Lusting Bruce as well as Rock and Soul Tarot podcasts for contributing to this one! I'm In Love With That Song: Be-Bop Deluxe - "Sleep That Burns"
Guitarist/singer/songwriter Bill Nelson combined Prog Rock, Glam and Art Rock into the unique sound that was Be-Bop Deluxe. They were musically adventurous, but always maintained a strong sense of melody and a memorable hook or two, as evidenced by this track from their 3rd album Sunburst Finish, released in 1976. Let's explore the "Sleep That Burns". "Sleep That Burns" (Bill Nelson) Copyright 1975 B. Feldman and Company Ltd. Imbalanced History: "The Magic Of It All" With David Cousins Of The Strawbs!
EConnecting with David Cousins of The Strawbs for this episode was a different experience for both of the Imbalanced Brothers. Ray was a fan of the band from the 1970s, when Markus was still a younger kid! So they each approached this interview, and the new album, differently. The result is a very exciting take on a classic band making their way back up the UK charts with The Magic Of It All, how they got there, as well as how South Africa now, and then, became central to the project. Dave shares some incredible stuff for guitar and banjo players regarding tunings, tells tales of Sandy Denny and Rick Wakeman, and capped the visit by revealing that a collaboration with members of Wu-Tang Clan is in motion. First Concert Memories #2: Van Halen with Author Greg Renoff
EOn the 2nd episode of our monthly sidecast, First Concert Memories, we welcome Van Halen superfan Greg Renoff to talk about the night he saw Van Halen on the 1984 Tour. This night would change Greg's life as he would go on to literally write the book on Van Halen with Van Halen Rising and his latest Ted Templeman: A Platinum Producer's Life in Music. You can hear Greg's enthusiasm and encyclopedic knowledge of Van Halen throughout our chat as we do our best to work the standard 20 questions we ask of every guest on FCM. The Wolf & Action Jackson anxiously awaited this episode as though they did eventually see Van Halen on the For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge Tour together in 1991, what really turned them onto Van Halen as impressionable youths was seeing the boys on MTV in 1984. Jump, Panama and Hot For Teacher were in heavy rotation on MTV that summer and the world had caught Van Halen fever. But we were too young to understand that you could see a band you saw on MTV on tour and had no idea how to go about getting to a concert (we were 10). However, a young Greg Renoff scored a ticket and got his mom to drop him off in the family truckster so he could witness Van Halen at the peak of their power on what is considered by most to be the best tour they ever did. A fun chat with one of the world's foremost experts on Van Halen, Greg Renoff! Visit Greg on Twitter (X) and order an autographed Ted Templeman book! Ugly American Werewolf in London: Top 10 Rock Band Free Agent Pickups
Now this debate could stir some controversy... Just like sports teams, bands pickup new members to replace folks who don't fit in musically, quit, develop substance issues, don't jibe socially or even die. Eventually, most bands replace members at some point in their careers. But which are the best free agent pickups of all time? Which non-original members made the biggest contribution to a band in terms of developing their sound, their success, and their legacy? The Wolf & Action Jackson each choose their ten best rock band additions of all time and why. Now we had to put in the parameter that the band had to release at least one album without free agent pick. Many bands had members that didn't work out before they put out a record that would find a replacement that made the lineup successful. For each pick we discuss that musician, the member they replaced, the first album they appeared on and that free agent's legacy in the band. And what would the band's legacy be without this person? Is Bruce Dickinson of Iron Maiden the best free agent vocalist? What about Ronnie James Dio, Brian Johnson, Sammy Hagar or Steve Perry? What about guitarists like Mick Taylor in the Rolling Stones, Phil Collen of Def Leppard or Adrian Smith of Iron Maiden? Which of these changed the fortunes of legendary bands forever? Listen and then let us know your Top 10 Rock Free Agents! Ugly American Werewolf in London Website Ugly American Werewolf in London Store - Get your Wolf merch! Metal Mayhem ROC: Udo Dirkschneider-New album, Fall US tour & re-connecting with bassist Peter Baltes.
Hello Headbangers, On this weeks’ show, we’re joined by Udo Dirkschneider, the legendary German heavy metal Vocalist currently of U.D.O. and of course from the peak era of Accept. Udo joined us to promote the bands’ just released new album “Touchdown”. We take a deep-dive into the new album, providing our takeaways of the material & of course hearing all about it from the Artist himself. In the episode we cover everything from the inspiration behind a European choosing to name the new album after an American sport, how writing 13 songs for the “Touchdown” album was an easy task, a recap of the bands Summer European tour & future touring plans in the US & rest of world to support “Touchdown” as well as providing his feelings & some insight on his 36-year career as a Solo artist & extensive discography (19 U.D.O. studio releases!). In addition, Udo gets a bit personal, telling us just how it’d been performing with old friend Peter Baltes again, plus the kinds of “things” & experiences that he’s had in his lengthy career that REALLY get him fired up (and a bit PISSED OFF). We even get the answer to a great Listener question about a long-debated (mis) interpretation of a lyric from a classic Accept song, some commentary on “if” he would ever perform the Frank Sinatra classic song “My Way” in a live setting, & just how the US tour Promoter has him by the “Balls” (To The Wall), when it comes to what they expect the band to play live in the States. Another example of a great, unique, conversation filled with in-depth antidotes and disclosures found only here at Metal Mayhem ROC. Thank you for the support and remember to always KEEP IT HEAVY!! Only Three Lads - Classic Alternative Music Podcast: Top 5 Saturday Night Music Picks (with Power Pop Hall of Famers The Flashcubes)
We're dancin' to the rhythm in our heart and soul, cuz it's S-A-T-U-R-D-A-Y Night on O3L! This week, we're all about the songs and albums that soundtrack our Saturday nights. And, yeah, we've got a Saturday Night Fever, and the only cure is... More FLASHCUBES! That's right...our Third Lads this week are bassist Gary Frenay and guitarist Paul Armstrong, one half of Power Pop Hall of Famers The Flashcubes! Gary and Paul, along with guitarist Arty Lenin and drummer Tommy Allen, burst out of Syracuse, NY in 1977. During their initial lifespan of 1977-1980, they released two singles, the classics "Christi Girl" and "Wait Til Next Week," and opened for major acts such as The Runaways, Ramones, The Jam and The Police. (In the case of the latter, here's a "true until proven otherwise" theory for you: Stewart Copeland is wearing a Flashcubes t-shirt on the cover of Regatta de Blanc.) Since the original foursome reformed in the late '90s as powerful and poppy as ever, they haven't looked back, with a string of acclaimed albums and a reputation as a world-class live act. The Flashcubes' latest album on Big Stir Records is Pop Masters, which finds our heroes tackling a selection of 12 guitar pop classics by their contemporaries, with an impressive roster of guest stars, including Pezband's "Baby It's Cold Outside" (with past O3L guest Mimi Betinis), Shoes' "Tomorrow Night" (with another past O3L guest, Jeff Murphy), The Paley Brothers' "Come Out And Play" and more. This is a must have for any power pop connoisseur! Plus, we unveil the latest world famous O3L game: Which Saturday Is It?, in which our discerning contestants distinguish between Saturday Night Fever quotes, Saturday Night Live lines, and lyrics from songs called "Saturday Night." Throughout the episode, Karina reflects on her admiration for Phish and how their music has deeply impacted her. Karina also shares her recent experience of having a successful show in Westport, Connecticut, where she performed a special broken up into quarters. The conversation takes an interesting turn as Karina shares her surprise at the change in perception some people from her past have toward her unconventional job. She recalls feeling a sense of legitimacy after being contacted by individuals who previously viewed her work as strange or eccentric. The episode shines a light on Karina's deep connection to music, from her childhood obsession with the Eyewitness News movie Minute on Channel Seven in New York to her discovery of the band at her first Phish concert.
