E

Powerage is the fifth studio album by Australian hard rock band AC/DC, released in 1978. This was the band's first album to feature Cliff Williams on bass guitar, and it was also the first AC/DC album not to have a title track (aside from the Australia-only High Voltage album) and the first worldwide not to be released with a different album cover. Ugly American Werewolf in London: The Rolling Stones - Goats Head Soup at 50 with Marc of Performance Anxiety

E

The Rolling Stones were on the run in 1973. Still tax exiles from England, the Stones went from Europe to the Caribbean to the United States to record and mix the album. Mick Jagger & Keith RIchards were still peeved over Allen Klein taking half their royalties but were now on Rolling Stone records (thanks to Ahmet Ertegun) and had a primo publishing deal. However, not all was right in Rolling Stones land as Mick Taylor was growing dissatisfied with his roll (and income) with the band, producer Jimmy Miller was slowly becoming deeply entrenched in his addiction and Keith was as well while Mick Jagger was trying to live up to his reputation as a lothario and jetset rock superstar. Though Goats Head Soup did contain worldwide hit Angie and Doo Doo Doo Doo Doo (Heartbreaker), there were some more experimental songs on the album like Winter, odd jams like Can You Hear The Music and the non-radio friendly tale of groupies, Star Star. Bill Wyman doesn't play much bass on the record as Keith and Mick Taylor take turns, Mick Jagger plays some guitar as well as piano as do Billy Preston, Nicky Hopkins and Ian Stewart. It's tough to follow Exile on Main Street and this one is a little different but to help walk us through it is Marc of the Performance Anxiety Podcast. Our Pantheon Podcasts brother helps us go track x track and tackle the unreleased tracks from the Deluxe Edition, including Scarlett featuring the one and only Jimmy Page. Shout It Out Loudcast: Album Review Crew Episode 43 "Master Of Puppets"

E

On the 43rd Episode of the Album Review Crew of Shout It Out Loudcast, Tom, Zeus & Sonny review the classic 1986 thrash album from Metallica, "Master Of Puppets." Master Of Puppets was Metallica's 3rd studio album. It made Metallica the leaders of thrash metal and became a landmark heavy metal album. Led by guitarist and vocalist, James Hetfield, drummer Lars Ulrich, guitarist Kirk Hammett and the late great bassist, Cliff Burton, Metallica grew as a band. Master Of Puppets featured more mature lyrics and songs that would win over their fans and critics without MTV and videos. The album contains some of the greatest songs of Metallica's catalog, including Battery, Master Of Puppets, Welcome Home (Sanitarium) and more. The album is considered a classic thrash album and one of the greatest in heavy metal. Master Of Puppets sold over 6 million copies. As usual the boys breakdown and dissect the tracks and rank the songs. They then rank the album and the album cover against the previous 41 albums reviewed on the Album Review Crew. This was the SIOL Patreon pick. Tune in to see whose rankings should land them in a Sanitarium and who should be a victim of a Battery and who is the MASTER!!! Only Three Lads - Classic Alternative Music Podcast: Top 5 SoCal Punk Songs (with Michael Jenks from The Executives)

E

Oops...we did it again? Yep, we tend to get lost in our passion sometimes, especially when we have an AMAZING Third Lad who's a subject matter expert at the topic at hand. So lace up your boots and join us in the mosh pit for an extended journey through the sounds, sights, and smells of the Southern California punk scene. With so many great songs, how do we narrow it down to five apiece?!? While the London and New York scenes understandably take up a lot of space in the punk rock annals, SoCal also had a vital and very distinctive brand of punk - often faster, more aggressive, and more violent than their peers. While Los Angeles was the epicentre, Orange County and San Diego both notably contributed plenty of classics of the genre. One of the first wave of San Diego punk bands to make a splash was The Executives, who released an impossibly rare EP in 1980 and played with just about every legendary band both in and out of the area. Our Third Lad this week is Executives' singer Michael Jenks, who gives us a thrilling first hand account of the rise of punk in Southern California, the chaotic San Diego scene, their recordings and their reformation. Plus: Michael and Brett share some "bro time!" Uncle Gregg whiffs with the ladies (and ruins everything)! Solid parenting advice! The downside of being a Britpop fan! Thanks to Executives' current guitarist Jeremy Spencer, who the O3L "street team" met at a Hoodoo Gurus show in May, ultimately leading to this enriching and entertaining couple of hours! Speaking of great SoCal punk, we have found it alive, well, and living in the Mojave Desert with Joshua Tree's Ingrates. Brett recently saw Ingrates open up for Terry Six (The Exploding Hearts) in Los Angeles, and was so impressed with their class of '77 punk energy-meets-power pop hooks that he reached out to the guys about thrusting them into the O3L Spotlight. This week, we play their latest single, the infectious "Don't Be A Stranger." You can find Ingrates music at: https://ingrates.bandcamp.com. Learn more about your ad choices. Author Mick Wall used to live life in the fast lane, back when he was a music publicist in the 70s for Black Sabbath, Thin Lizzy, and Dire Straits among many others. Nowadays he writes books about artists like Guns N' Roses, Led Zeppelin and Metallica. Life In The Fast Lane: The Eagles' Reckless Ride Down The Rock & Roll Highway is his latest book. The Age Old Question (a podcast for music fans): What Is The Greatest Song Outside of 4/4?

This week, Rich and Clint discuss the great songs written outside of 4/4. Most songs in popular music are in 4/4, but occasionally songwriters venture outside of what's familiar to our ears, and the odd time signature is a brilliant and critical component of the storytelling. Without getting too deep into the music theory, Rich and Clint highlight some examples of popular songs that perhaps you never noticed have odd time signatures - songs like All You Need Is Love by The Beatles, Money by Pink Floyd, Solsbury Hill by Peter Gabriel and many more. Famous & Gravy: Pure Imagination (Gene Wilder)

He was an accomplished stage actor as well as a screenwriter, a novelist and the director of four movies in which he starred. He made his movie debut in 1967 in the celebrated crime drama, “Bonnie and Clyde.” He had haunted blue eyes and an empathy born of his own history of psychic distress. His rule for comedy was simple: Don’t try to make it funny; try to make it real. “I’m an actor, not a clown,” he said more than once. Imbalanced History: The Day That Dylan Went Electric

E

Bob Dylan burst onto the American Folk scene shortly after he arrived in New York City. Quickly, he made major impressions inside the local music community via Greenwich Village, and as a popular artist upon releasing his first few records on Columbia. He and The Beatles immediately hit it off with mutual admiration and inspiration. Dylan's expanded musical pallet was part of the early sessions for what became, Highway 61 Revisited! With his 3rd appearance at the influential 1965 Newport Folk Festival looming in late July, he packed up his studio band, and made a plan to "go electric at Newport..." Ep 540Decibel Geek Podcast - Alternate KISStory - Ep540

E

July may be over but KISSmas isn't as we time travel to another dimension with Alternate KISStory. Imagine, if you will, KISStory playing out differently. Imagine that certain albums were never released. Imagine the original band splitting up at a different time; and the subsequent solo efforts. Imagine certain replacement members never entering the picture and a reunion tour happening at a completely different time. Imagine a reunion album being released in a different era. It's interesting to think about and that's what we did. Thanks to a brilliant idea by Aaron Camaro and a fully-fleshed out alternate history, we present to you what might have taken place in a different dimension. Different, but still plausible. Additionally, Chris and Aaron will reveal their idea for a reunion album by KISS in a much different era. You'll get the album title and tracklist. Also, be sure to check the Decibel Geek social media pages for reveals of their album artwork! We'd love to hear your thoughts on Alternate KISStory, how you think it would have differed, and what YOUR picks would be for a reunion album from the era mentioned. Ugly American Werewolf in London: Motley Crue - Shout At The Devil

E

Motley Crue followed the platinum success of their debut record Too Fast For Love with 1983's Shout At The Devil. With a provocative title and a cover featuring a pentagram, The Crue were courting controversy in an attempt to gain fame and grow their teenage fanbase. Never known for their musicianship or lyric writing prowess, their sophomore effort helped define a sleazy LA sound that may have eventually been perfected by Guns N Roses. Thanks to their outrageous looks, stage show and attitudes, Motley were able to get airtime on MTV, opening act slots with bands like KISS and Ozzy Oxbourne and get invited to play big festivals. Looks That Kill became a hit on the radio and it helped buoy the album to over 5 million in sales worldwide. But does it stand the test of time? Hearing the album as a teenager in the 80s is a different experience than hearing it 40 years later and between the simple song structures, the purile yet x-rated lyrics and overall lack of prowess with their instruments, sonically this might not be a classic for the ages. However, thanks to the imagery, the attitude and pure punch of the Mick Mars riffs and Tommy Lee's drumming, this will always hold a place in the hard rock pantheon of albums and is what helped propel Motley Crue to the worldwide success they still enjoy today. E

This week Tom & Zeus welcome back non-SIOL Hall Of Famer, drummer and author Joey Cassata for a KISS Draft on the KISS 1978 Solo Albums. The SIOL KISS Draft is back. This is KISS Draft XI and the guys enlisted none other than Joey Cassata to help with the draft. The KISS draft is similar to fantasy football drafts, where each person drafts 10 songs each from the 1978 KISS solo albums. The guys discuss, analyze and breakdown the unique KISS 1978 solo albums, their favorites, the songs and the whole concept. They then draft 10 songs each, with the only caveat being you MUST draft 2 songs per album. Insult fly and opinions are given, right and wrong. So tune in to see who had the best draft, who had the worst and to see if Joey can impress Tom & Zeus and possibly become a SIOL Hall Of Famer... he won't. It's the Summer of Love...Tractor, that is. That's because our friends in seminal Athens band Love Tractor return to O3L for an epic two parter as we discuss our Top 5 Summer Albums! It's time for the epic conclusion, where Love Tractor guitarists Mark Cline & Mike Richmond and bassist Armistead Wellford recount more wild, hilarious tales of the Athens scene in the '80s and the making of their second album, 1983's Around The Bend. We'll also divulge our #2 & #1 Summer Albums. If you didn't get enough sex, drugs & rock n' roll (or country rock, if a certain record label had their druthers) during part 1...well, you're in luck. Party at Little Richard's house! About Love Tractor: It is no act of misguided hyperbole to declare the genre-bending, art rock pioneers, Love Tractor one of the most influential bands of the past 43 years. As one of the inadvertent architects of the Athens, Georgia scene and sound, Love Tractor along with Pylon, The B-52’s, and R.E.M. were essential in staking out the jangly and disco-driven rock that would have — and still has—a huge influence on subsequent generations. Of those bands, Love Tractor always stood out as the most artistically brave and willing to fail in order to succeed. In 1983, Love Tractor released their second album, Around the Bend, which was accompanied by a popular MTV video for the song "Spin Your Partner." The album showcased the band's growth and evolution, incorporating vocals and other experimentations to enhance their sound. The record was well-received critically and commercially— topping the college charts, and solidifying Love Tractor's place in the alternative music landscape. Around The Bend (40th Anniversary Remastered Edition) is due out September 1, 2023, on Propeller Sound Recordings. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

S4 Ep 9My Rock Moment: The California Myth and Classic Rock with Dave Gebroe of Discograffiti

Today’s guest on My Rock Moment is Dave Gebroe, founder and host of the well-known podcast, Discograffiti. Discograffiti is a weekly music podcast that delivers the objective truth about the entire discography of every single artist and band that ever existed. The show does a deep-dive inspection of all EPs, singles, compilations, relevant solo work and bootlegs, and notable appearances on other artists’ records. Every release is assigned an objectively accurate star rating between zero and five, and Dave shares best and worse picks in their discography. In this episode, Dave and I explore the California Myth within the context of 60s and 70s rock. Surf rock as well as other anthems that pay homage to the Golden State, fueled the global fascination with perfect waves, beaches flanked with tanned skin and teeny bikinis, fame, beauty, and a promise of some grander way of living. California has long been a western beacon dating back centuries but the songs we’ll cover today conjure up visions and dreams of an ideal life that was far from factual for many. Some songs on this list might come as a surprise, and others have crossed generations, staples of our classic rock playlists. Have a listen and see how your list compares. I'm In Love With That Song podcast: Black Sabbath - "Spiral Architect"

Black Sabbath were at a standstill when it came time to make their 5th album. The ideas just weren’t coming to guitarist Tony Iommi, and without his massive guitar riffs… well, there just wasn’t any Black Sabbath. Weeks were wasted in the studio until he stumbled onto the riff that became “Sabbath Bloody Sabbath“, and then they were off to the races. That song became the opening cut from the album that would bear its name; and the song that would bring that album to a close is “Spiral Architect“, one of the most epic songs the band ever produced. On this episode, we explore the making of this album along with an examination of one of their most ambitious tracks, “Spiral Architect”. “Spiral Architect” (Words & Music by Black Sabbath) Copyright 1974 Westminster Music Ltd. Shout It Out Loudcast: The Zeppelin Chronicles "Led Zeppelin IV"

E

On the 4th Episode of Shout It Out Loudcast's sidecast, The Zeppelin Chronicles, our hosts, Tom & Zeus, along with SIOL sidekick Murph and Jay Scott from The Hook Rocks podcast, review the classic 1971 album, "Led Zeppelin IV." Led Zeppelin IV sometimes called, untitled, Zoso, runes and even 4 symbols is considered to be not only one of Led Zeppelin's greatest achievements, but also music in general. Filled with immortal songs like, Black Dog, Rock And Roll and perhaps the greatest rock song of all time, Stairway To Heaven, Led Zeppelin IV catapulted Led Zeppelin into a superstardom like very few have ever achieved. Following Led Zeppelin III lukewarm reception, the band went to work on the next album in October of 1970. The album still featured Led Zeppelin signature sound, blues, heavy metal, rock and roll, blues and folk. However, the songs had more of a punch and more accessible to the public. Led Zeppelin IV went to Number 2 in the USA and went 24 times platinum in the United States. The album has made almost every possible greatest albums list ever created and so have many of the songs, notably Stairway To Heaven. The Zeppelin Chronicles breaks down Led Zeppelin IV SIOL style. The guys discuss their connection with the album, the background of the album, the album cover and finally the songs. They rank the songs, then rank the album and album cover against the three previous Led Zeppelin albums reviewed. See who thinks Led Zeppelin IV is a masterpiece and see who thinks it may be overrated!
