The Age Old Question (a podcast for music fans): What Is The Greatest Song Outside of 4/4?

This week, Rich and Clint discuss the great songs written outside of 4/4. Most songs in popular music are in 4/4, but occasionally songwriters venture outside of what's familiar to our ears, and the odd time signature is a brilliant and critical component of the storytelling. Without getting too deep into the music theory, Rich and Clint highlight some examples of popular songs that perhaps you never noticed have odd time signatures - songs like All You Need Is Love by The Beatles, Money by Pink Floyd, Solsbury Hill by Peter Gabriel and many more. Famous & Gravy: Pure Imagination (Gene Wilder)

He was an accomplished stage actor as well as a screenwriter, a novelist and the director of four movies in which he starred. He made his movie debut in 1967 in the celebrated crime drama, “Bonnie and Clyde.” He had haunted blue eyes and an empathy born of his own history of psychic distress. His rule for comedy was simple: Don’t try to make it funny; try to make it real. “I’m an actor, not a clown,” he said more than once. In 1971, he was nominated for a Golden Globe for his performance as the wizardly title character in “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory”. This episode’s dead celebrity is Gene Wilder. Imbalanced History: The Day That Dylan Went Electric

E

Bob Dylan burst onto the American Folk scene shortly after he arrived in New York City. Quickly, he made major impressions inside the local music community via Greenwich Village, and as a popular artist upon releasing his first few records on Columbia. He and The Beatles immediately hit it off with mutual admiration and inspiration. Dylan's expanded musical pallet was part of the early sessions for what became, Highway 61 Revisited! With his 3rd appearance at the influential 1965 Newport Folk Festival looming in late July, he packed up his studio band, and made a plan to "go electric at Newport..." The Imbalanced Brothers tell the tale, giving their own view of its historic importance o Folk, Rock, and the fusion of the two! Ep 540Decibel Geek Podcast - Alternate KISStory - Ep540

E

July may be over but KISSmas isn't as we time travel to another dimension with Alternate KISStory. Imagine, if you will, KISStory playing out differently. Imagine that certain albums were never released. Imagine the original band splitting up at a different time; and the subsequent solo efforts. Imagine certain replacement members never entering the picture and a reunion tour happening at a completely different time. Imagine a reunion album being released in a different era. It's interesting to think about and that's what we did. Thanks to a brilliant idea by Aaron Camaro and a fully-fleshed out alternate history, we present to you what might have taken place in a different dimension. Different, but still plausible. Additionally, Chris and Aaron will reveal their idea for a reunion album by KISS in a much different era. You'll get the album title and tracklist. Also, be sure to check the Decibel Geek social media pages for reveals of their album artwork! We'd love to hear your thoughts on Alternate KISStory, how you think it would have differed, and what YOUR picks would be for a reunion album from the era mentioned. Ugly American Werewolf in London: Motley Crue - Shout At The Devil

E

Motley Crue followed the platinum success of their debut record Too Fast For Love with 1983's Shout At The Devil. With a provocative title and a cover featuring a pentagram, The Crue were courting controversy in an attempt to gain fame and grow their teenage fanbase. Never known for their musicianship or lyric writing prowess, their sophomore effort helped define a sleazy LA sound that may have eventually been perfected by Guns N Roses. Thanks to their outrageous looks, stage show and attitudes, Motley were able to get airtime on MTV, opening act slots with bands like KISS and Ozzy Oxbourne and get invited to play big festivals. Looks That Kill became a hit on the radio and it helped buoy the album to over 5 million in sales worldwide. But does it stand the test of time? Hearing the album as a teenager in the 80s is a different experience than hearing it 40 years later and between the simple song structures, the purile yet x-rated lyrics and overall lack of prowess with their instruments, sonically this might not be a classic for the ages. However, thanks to the imagery, the attitude and pure punch of the Mick Mars riffs and Tommy Lee's drumming, this will always hold a place in the hard rock pantheon of albums and is what helped propel Motley Crue to the worldwide success they still enjoy today. Shout It Out Loudcast: "KISS Draft XI 1978 KISS Solo Albums"

E

This week Tom & Zeus welcome back non-SIOL Hall Of Famer, drummer and author Joey Cassata for a KISS Draft on the KISS 1978 Solo Albums. The SIOL KISS Draft is back. This is KISS Draft XI and the guys enlisted none other than Joey Cassata to help with the draft. The KISS draft is similar to fantasy football drafts, where each person drafts 10 songs each from the 1978 KISS solo albums. The guys discuss, analyze and breakdown the unique KISS 1978 solo albums, their favorites, the songs and the whole concept. They then draft 10 songs each, with the only caveat being you MUST draft 2 songs per album. Insult fly and opinions are given, right and wrong. So tune in to see who had the best draft, who had the worst and to see if Joey can impress Tom & Zeus and possibly become a SIOL Hall Of Famer... he won't. Only Three Lads - Classic Alternative Music Podcast: Top 5 Summer Albums, Part 2 (with Love Tractor)

It's the Summer of Love...Tractor, that is. That's because our friends in seminal Athens band Love Tractor return to O3L for an epic two parter as we discuss our Top 5 Summer Albums! It's time for the epic conclusion, where Love Tractor guitarists Mark Cline & Mike Richmond and bassist Armistead Wellford recount more wild, hilarious tales of the Athens scene in the '80s and the making of their second album, 1983's Around The Bend. We'll also divulge our #2 & #1 Summer Albums. If you didn't get enough sex, drugs & rock n' roll (or country rock, if a certain record label had their druthers) during part 1...well, you're in luck. Party at Little Richard's house! About Love Tractor: It is no act of misguided hyperbole to declare the genre-bending, art rock pioneers, Love Tractor one of the most influential bands of the past 43 years. As one of the inadvertent architects of the Athens, Georgia scene and sound, Love Tractor along with Pylon, The B-52’s, and R.E.M. were essential in staking out the jangly and disco-driven rock that would have — and still has—a huge influence on subsequent generations. Of those bands, Love Tractor always stood out as the most artistically brave and willing to fail in order to succeed. In 1983, Love Tractor released their second album, Around the Bend, which was accompanied by a popular MTV video for the song "Spin Your Partner." The album showcased the band's growth and evolution, incorporating vocals and other experimentations to enhance their sound. The record was well-received critically and commercially— topping the college charts, and solidifying Love Tractor's place in the alternative music landscape. Around The Bend (40th Anniversary Remastered Edition) is due out September 1, 2023, on Propeller Sound Recordings. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

S4 Ep 9My Rock Moment: The California Myth and Classic Rock with Dave Gebroe of Discograffiti

Today’s guest on My Rock Moment is Dave Gebroe, founder and host of the well-known podcast, Discograffiti. Discograffiti is a weekly music podcast that delivers the objective truth about the entire discography of every single artist and band that ever existed. The show does a deep-dive inspection of all EPs, singles, compilations, relevant solo work and bootlegs, and notable appearances on other artists’ records. Every release is assigned an objectively accurate star rating between zero and five, and Dave shares best and worse picks in their discography. In this episode, Dave and I explore the California Myth within the context of 60s and 70s rock. Surf rock as well as other anthems that pay homage to the Golden State, fueled the global fascination with perfect waves, beaches flanked with tanned skin and teeny bikinis, fame, beauty, and a promise of some grander way of living. California has long been a western beacon dating back centuries but the songs we’ll cover today conjure up visions and dreams of an ideal life that was far from factual for many. Some songs on this list might come as a surprise, and others have crossed generations, staples of our classic rock playlists. Have a listen and see how your list compares. I'm In Love With That Song podcast: Black Sabbath - "Spiral Architect"

Black Sabbath were at a standstill when it came time to make their 5th album. The ideas just weren’t coming to guitarist Tony Iommi, and without his massive guitar riffs… well, there just wasn’t any Black Sabbath. Weeks were wasted in the studio until he stumbled onto the riff that became “Sabbath Bloody Sabbath“, and then they were off to the races. That song became the opening cut from the album that would bear its name; and the song that would bring that album to a close is “Spiral Architect“, one of the most epic songs the band ever produced. On this episode, we explore the making of this album along with an examination of one of their most ambitious tracks, “Spiral Architect”. “Spiral Architect” (Words & Music by Black Sabbath) Copyright 1974 Westminster Music Ltd. Shout It Out Loudcast: The Zeppelin Chronicles "Led Zeppelin IV"

E

On the 4th Episode of Shout It Out Loudcast's sidecast, The Zeppelin Chronicles, our hosts, Tom & Zeus, along with SIOL sidekick Murph and Jay Scott from The Hook Rocks podcast, review the classic 1971 album, "Led Zeppelin IV." Led Zeppelin IV sometimes called, untitled, Zoso, runes and even 4 symbols is considered to be not only one of Led Zeppelin's greatest achievements, but also music in general. Filled with immortal songs like, Black Dog, Rock And Roll and perhaps the greatest rock song of all time, Stairway To Heaven, Led Zeppelin IV catapulted Led Zeppelin into a superstardom like very few have ever achieved. Following Led Zeppelin III lukewarm reception, the band went to work on the next album in October of 1970. The album still featured Led Zeppelin signature sound, blues, heavy metal, rock and roll, blues and folk. However, the songs had more of a punch and more accessible to the public. Led Zeppelin IV went to Number 2 in the USA and went 24 times platinum in the United States. The album has made almost every possible greatest albums list ever created and so have many of the songs, notably Stairway To Heaven. The Zeppelin Chronicles breaks down Led Zeppelin IV SIOL style. The guys discuss their connection with the album, the background of the album, the album cover and finally the songs. They rank the songs, then rank the album and album cover against the three previous Led Zeppelin albums reviewed. Tunes & Tumblers: July Roundup - Oops! All Barbenheimer

E

This week the gang sits down for our monthly gab about all the stuff we loved and hated (no in-between) from July, what we're digging these days, and what we're looking forward to in the month to come. In the spirit of Leo season, we did our favorite thing ever: put Anthony in a conversation with only Leos. We celebrate the greatest season of the year by officially welcoming our newest drinking buddy Jamie to the pod, letting Lilly go on a rant about Christopher Nolan, and Kaylin's flawless execution of her wittiest pun about hot garbage ever. Our opinions on music, you ask? That's what the listen button's for! Cheers! ***Please enjoy responsibly*** Tune & Tumblers "What Have You Been Listening To?" Imbalanced History: Marvin Gaye: Musical & Cultural Icon - REDUX

E

This re-release of Marvin Gaye: Musical & Cultural Icon looks at the chaotic, turbulent and troubled life of sweet Marvin Gaye. One of the most beautiful voices to sing any form of Rock & Roll. His was the voice of a generation of Americans. Marvin was passionate, conflicted and believed we could conquer hate with love, although his life choices didn't always reflect that strong belief within him. We discuss the hard truths of his life, and his struggle with mental illness. Musically, solo success aside, his duets with Kim Weston and Tammi Terrell were legendary. Ep 107See Hear Podcast Episode 107 - Free The Jazz

To some people, Ornette Coleman represents the adventurous spirit of jazz. To others, Kenny G is as exciting as it gets. This episode is more dedicated to the former..... Welcome to episode 107 of See Hear Podcast. This month, Tim has selected the film under discussion. It's a documentary filmed in a jazz club in Budapest called “Free The Jazz”. Released in 2014, but seemingly filmed in 2007, its format is simple. Director Czabán György interviewed a range of jazz musicians from Germany, England, Japan, America and Norway about their love of free jazz and what it means to them. After each 2 minute interview, we see that musician in action....then it moves onto the next performer. On the surface, this doesn't sound like a great film format. However, it allows people who may not necessarily be familiar with many of these artists to listen to what they have to say and sample their music. If you don't like one, you only have to wait a brief time to the next one – the jazz sampler equivalent of speed dating if you will. In that regard, this film is highly worth watching, both if you're a fan of free jazz or even if you're not. It's informative enough for it's format, and allows you to follow up on those artists that may take your interest. Kerry, Tim and Maurice discuss their histories with free jazz, how it's different from tonal and modal jazz, and the politics that inspired some of the musicians. They debunk the notion that it's groups of musicians playing what they want with no thought.....oh, and they discuss the film.... They dedicate the episode to the memory of the recently deceased Peter Brotzmann, a giant in the field of free jazz. “Free The Jazz” is on YouTube in its entirety to watch at: https://youtu.be/KHlshNgkmOE There are hard subs in Hungarian, but much of the film is in English, and you can activate the English subs for those musicians speaking in other languages. If you’ve been enjoying the show, please consider giving us a favourable review on iTunes and let your friends know that our show exists. If you don't enjoy the show, tell your adversaries to tune in. We don't care who listens..... See Hear is proudly part of the Pantheon Network of music podcasts. Ugly American Werewolf in London: Iron Maiden Live in Amsterdam & Antwerp with Uncle Steve's Iron Maiden Zone

The Wolf was living in Amsterdam and received news that Iron Maiden were coming to town. Immediately I bought tickets and invited Action Jackson to come in for a visit as he's never seen Maiden live. I also picked up Antwerp tickets as....well, why not? Tragically, The Wolf had to move back to the USA prior to the shows in July. However, the boys were resolute and made their way to Europe to see the greatest live show on Earth - Iron Maiden. The fact that they're doing the Days of Future Past Tour focusing not only on the new Senjutsu album but our favorite IM record ever, Somewhere in Time, this was the chance of a lifetime for your intrepid hosts to see an amazing show together. To help walk through some of the amazing memories we made, we've enlisted Steve from Uncle Steve's Iron Maiden Zone Podcast. Steve's deep knowledge and passion for Maiden dates back before the The Wolf & Action even knew each other and he asks the questions Iron Maiden fans want to hear. Besides the performance, setlist, appearances by Eddie (the shootout with Bruce was brilliant) and other details of the show, the boys share a very special encounter (or three) back at the hotel after the show. It was a magical couple of days in Europe for your hosts, making amazing memories that we share with you here. Metal Mayhem ROC-WITCHSLAYER-AFTER 40 YEARS CHICAGO THRASHERS PROPERLY RELEASE DEBUT CD

Greetings Metal Heads- Hope everyone is safe ,healthy and enjoying summer. On This weeks show we feature another one of these Feel Good Metal stories. Today we’re here to talk with Vocalist Jeff Allen of Witchslayer, the heavy metal band from Chicago who in 2023 PROPERLY released its first EVER album, something in the works for 40 years. Unfortunately Following the success of Witchslayer’s 5-song demo in the early 1980’s, Metal Blade Records included the song “I Don’t Want To Die” on the Metal Massacre 4 compilation album ,the group disbanded before a new full length album could be recorded. Fast forward to 2022, original singer Jeff Allen has reformed the band with guitarist Ken Mandat (Damien Thorne), Bassist Mick Lucid (Viscous Circle), and drummer Gabriel Anthony (Tyrant’s Reign). The new album features 11 hard-hitting tracks which were originally written by the original lineup in the early 80s, but recorded by the new lineup. Stay tuned for big things coming from Witchslayer soon! Jeff joins us to talk about the history of the band, the new release, and plans for 2023. Jeff shares details about early Whitchslayer opening for ACCEPT, contacting Metallica during the Kill Em All era and habnging out in California and the sunset strip era. Only Three Lads - Classic Alternative Music Podcast: Top 5 Summer Albums (with classic Athens band Love Tractor)

It's the Summer of Love...Tractor, that is. That's because our friends in seminal Athens band Love Tractor return to O3L for an epic two parter as we discuss our Top 5 Summer Albums! During this first part, guitarists Mark Cline & Mike Richmond and bassist Armistead Wellford recount some wild, hilarious tales of the Athens scene in the '80s and the making of their second album, 1983's Around The Bend. We'll also divulge our #5 through #3 Summer Albums. And, no, you didn't accidentally stumble upon the High Times podcast.

Famous & Gravy: Secret Chord (Leonard Cohen)

He was an unlikely and reluctant pop star, if in fact he ever was one. In the 1960s, he lived in a house on the Greek island of Hydra, where he wrote a pair of novels. He was 33 when his first record was released in 1967. In the early 1970s, his record company concocted an advertising campaign where they called him “the master of erotic despair.” Around 1994, he abandoned his music career and moved to Mt. Baldy monastery, where he was ordained a Buddhist monk. His best-known song, a majestic and meditative ballad which has been endlessly covered, is called “Hallelujah”. Famous & Gravy is created and co-hosted by Amit Kapoor and Michael Osborne. This episode was produced by Jacob Weiss.
