We're back to discuss the second half of the Led Zeppelin discography as we pick our Best & Worst tracks from each album. Led Zeppelin's career from 1974-1982 was a period of great success, with the band releasing some of their most iconic albums, including Physical Graffiti, Presence, and In Through the Out Door. They also toured extensively during this time, playing to sold-out crowds around the world. However, the band's success was not without its challenges. In 1977, drummer John Bonham died suddenly, leaving the band devastated. They eventually regrouped and released one more album, Coda, in 1982, but they never fully recovered from Bonham's death. The band disbanded in 1980. In this episode we each pick what we think is the best song and worst song from each album during this period. Will we agree? Will we argue? The Yardbirds have an unparalleled legacy in the hallowed halls of rock n roll as they were one of the original British Invasion groups that brought the blues to the forefront of the rock scene in the 60s. Hello Rivet Heads, On this week’s show, we present a Truly unique look behind the "Metal Curtain" as we speak to Brittany Chapman, the daughter of the late Paul Chapman, Guitarist of UFO. This is her story we have dubbed " Growing up Chapman". Brittany is the youngest of Paul's 3 children via 4 marriages, as well as being the only girl. Since Paul's death in June of 2020, Brittany has received condolence’s and well wishes from fans and musicians from all over the world. The magnitude of her late father’s finger print on the global rock community has been humbling to say the least for Brittany. You see, to us fans, Paul Chapman was a "ROCK STAR", but to Brittany he was her dad. Brittany shares countless stories of her family upbringing with her father, Mother, Step Mother’s, step siblings, nine grandsons and two granddaughters. You really get a look at Paul Chapman”, THE DAD" with his love of cooking and music. His connection to all 4 of his wives and how he was able to keep a positive family unit together while combining step children with his own children. Brittany shares her admiration for her mother Cheryl whom she refers to as the real “GOAT” of the family. Fun stories include putting up with the passed-out road crew of L.A. glam band in her living room to late night shenanigans involving swords. Brittany reflects back on her dad's love of cooking. Always preparing big meals with guitar in hand, for friends and family. Family was everything to Paul. It wasn’t always easy, Paul wasn’t perfect, but he had a perfect heart and loved both his close family and his music family. Finally, Brittany shares the continuous reach out from Her Dad's colleagues. Phil Collen and Joe Elliot of Def Leppard, Billy Sheehan, Rudy Sarzo, Kirk Hammett, Nicko McBrain and Radio DJ Eddie Trunk. The list goes on and on... Paul touched all of these music giants in a way that Brittany is just now fully realizing. "Growing up Chapman '' is Brittany Chapman's story and it’s a Damn good one! Paul Chapman (9 June 1954 – 9 June 2020) was a Welsh rock guitarist best known for his work in bands such as UFO and Lone Star. Chapman first joined UFO in 1974-1975 as a second guitarist for the live shows. He left UFO in January 1975 and went on to form Lone Star. Chapman later rejoined UFO in December 1978 on a full-time basis. Chapman recorded his first album with UFO – No Place to Run – It was released in January 1980. Chapman remained in UFO until 1983 In 1984 he joined Waysted and recorded the albums The Good the Bad the Waysted and Save your Prayers. Chapman also went on to form a new band PCP (Paul Chapman Project) and in July 2006, Chapman joined the American southern rock band Gator Country, a collection of Molly Hatchet veterans. In 2015, Chapman went out for a 10-week US tour with the Swedish/Canadian band Killer Bee. Chapman died on his 66th birthday on 9 June 2020. He left two sons, a daughter, nine grandsons and two granddaughters. He was well known by his nickname "Tonka", allegedly acquired because of his indestructible qualities. R.I.P. On the 2nd episode of our monthly sidecast, First Concert Memories, we welcome Van Halen superfan Greg Renoff to talk about the night he saw Van Halen on the 1984 Tour. This night would change Greg's life as he would go on to literally write the book on Van Halen with Van Halen Rising and his latest Ted Templeman: A Platinum Producer's Life in Music. But we were too young to understand that you could see a band you saw on MTV on tour and had no idea how to go about getting to a concert (we were 10). Now this debate could stir some controversy... Just like sports teams, bands pickup new members to replace folks who don't fit in musically, quit, develop substance issues, don't jibe socially or even die. Eventually, most bands replace members at some point in their careers. But which are the best free agent pickups of all time? Which non-original members made the biggest contribution to a band in terms of developing their sound, their success, and their legacy? The Wolf & Action Jackson each choose their ten best rock band additions of all time and why. Now we had to put in the parameter that the band had to release at least one album without free agent pick. Many bands had members that didn't work out before they put out a record that would find a replacement that made the lineup successful. 1978 was an interesting time for music. Bigger 70s acts like Aerosmith, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath & Deep Purple were breaking up or having issues. Punk was the hottest thing in the music industry. New wave was on the horizon as was the real game changer in 1981, MTV. Bands that would forge their way to superstardom in the 80s via MTV released their debuts in 1978 - Van Halen, Dire Straits, The Cars and The Police. WIth a young songwriting genius on the bass in Sting, a sturdy veteran of the road & the studio in Andy Summers and an intellectual drumsmith in Stewart Copeland, they were too good to be just another punk band. So they blended reggae, punk, and rock with relatable lyrics and built the foundation on which their sound would grow and take them to immense success. The subjects of the 10 songs on Outlandos D'Amour vary from prostitution (Roxanne), suicide (Can't Stand Losing You), fame (Peanuts) and even a blow-up sex doll (Be My Girl - Sally). And yet it all comes together as a fresh sound that is still identifiable to The Police. These three make a lot of noise but it's mostly upbeat, jump up and down fun, especially on the crescendo building (and The Wolf's personal favorite) So Lonely. The album went platinum in the US & UK (and Canada, France, Australia, etc) and gave The Police the foothold they needed to eventually become the biggest band in the world in 1983 with Synchronicity. Needless to say, we have fun every week here on O3L, but this one will have ya dancing in the streets guaranteed! We just can't help ourselves when it comes to talking about music influenced by "The Sound of Young America," Motown Records...especially when Heaven must have sent us this week's guest from above. What's going on, you ask? We guess you say, what can make us feel this way? Well, by now, you've probably heard it through the grapevine that it's the marvelous Arthur Alexander! (Oh, was that subtle enough?) Arthur has a very powerful story of rock n' roll salvation. Growing up in communist Poland in the '60s, Arthur discovered the power of rock through records pressed on postcards and through scratchy radio signals that the government attempted to silence, deeming this new musical form of freedom as a threat to society. It was the sound that united and invigorated legions of youth, inspired kids to form bands, and, for Arthur, paved the way for a new life in America. In the mid-70s, his band The Poppees were a part of the burgeoning New York scene, playing venues like CBGB and Max's Kansas City alongside The Heartbreakers, Ramones, and Blondie, despite eschewing straight ahead punk rock for the sounds of Merseybeat. After The Poppees, Arthur formed rockin' power pop group Sorrows, fulfilling his vision of crossing ABBA with The Sex Pistols. Sorrows issued two albums for CBS, 1980's Teenage Heartbreak (the sessions from that era also captured on the Bad Times, Good Times album) and 1981's Love Too Late. The latter was so badly botched by the record label that it prompted Sorrows to reform four decades later to put things right, to record the album that it should have been all along: Love Too Late...The Real Album. Arthur has also issued two marvelous solo albums in recent years, 2018's One Bar Left, and the brand new 2023 LP Steppin' Out on Big Stir Records. https://www.bigstirrecords.com. Hello Metal Heads, On this weeks’ show, were joined by American filmmaker Adam Dubin a NYU film program graduate and a life long metalhead. While at NYU, Adam and a young Rick Rubin shared a dorm room and a passion for music and the media arts. The two were involved in the development of the Beastie Boys and helped launch their career both musically and visually. Adam co-directed the Beastie Boys music videos "(You Gotta) Fight for Your Right (To Party!)" and "No Sleep till Brooklyn" with Ric Menello. In 1990 Adam was commissioned by Metallica to shoot some recording studio footage which eventually led to Dubin directing the feature-length documentary "A Year and a Half in the Life of Metallica" as well as their music video "Nothing Else Matters "from 1991's Metallica: Metallica. This was the start of a 33 year relationship with Metallica that has included the 2013, Dubin directed documentary film Hit The Lights: The Making of Metallica Through the Never, starring Metallica and actor Dane DeHaan as well as the Freeze ‘Em All in Antarctica documentary In 2009, Dubin directed the concert film Stark Raving Black starring comedian Lewis Black. In 2012, he directed the concert film In God We Rust, also starring Black. 2019 saw the release of the documentary "Murder in the Front Row" which explores the early thrash scene of the San Francisco Bay Area.
