Imbalanced History: Marvin Gaye: Musical & Cultural Icon - REDUX
EThis re-release of Marvin Gaye: Musical & Cultural Icon looks at the chaotic, turbulent and troubled life of sweet Marvin Gaye. One of the most beautiful voices to sing any form of Rock & Roll. His was the voice of a generation of Americans. Marvin was passionate, conflicted and believed we could conquer hate with love, although his life choices didn't always reflect that strong belief within him. We discuss the hard truths of his life, and his struggle with mental illness. Musically, solo success aside, his duets with Kim Weston and Tammi Terrell were legendary. Ep 107See Hear Podcast Episode 107 - Free The Jazz
To some people, Ornette Coleman represents the adventurous spirit of jazz. To others, Kenny G is as exciting as it gets. This episode is more dedicated to the former..... Welcome to episode 107 of See Hear Podcast. This month, Tim has selected the film under discussion. It's a documentary filmed in a jazz club in Budapest called “Free The Jazz”. Released in 2014, but seemingly filmed in 2007, its format is simple. Director Czabán György interviewed a range of jazz musicians from Germany, England, Japan, America and Norway about their love of free jazz and what it means to them. After each 2 minute interview, we see that musician in action....then it moves onto the next performer. On the surface, this doesn't sound like a great film format. However, it allows people who may not necessarily be familiar with many of these artists to listen to what they have to say and sample their music. If you don't like one, you only have to wait a brief time to the next one – the jazz sampler equivalent of speed dating if you will. In that regard, this film is highly worth watching, both if you're a fan of free jazz or even if you're not. It's informative enough for it's format, and allows you to follow up on those artists that may take your interest. Kerry, Tim and Maurice discuss their histories with free jazz, how it's different from tonal and modal jazz, and the politics that inspired some of the musicians. They debunk the notion that it's groups of musicians playing what they want with no thought.....oh, and they discuss the film.... They dedicate the episode to the memory of the recently deceased Peter Brotzmann, a giant in the field of free jazz. “Free The Jazz” is on YouTube in its entirety to watch at: https://youtu.be/KHlshNgkmOE There are hard subs in Hungarian, but much of the film is in English, and you can activate the English subs for those musicians speaking in other languages. Ugly American Werewolf in London: Iron Maiden Live in Amsterdam & Antwerp with Uncle Steve's Iron Maiden Zone
The Wolf was living in Amsterdam and received news that Iron Maiden were coming to town. Immediately I bought tickets and invited Action Jackson to come in for a visit as he's never seen Maiden live. I also picked up Antwerp tickets as....well, why not? Tragically, The Wolf had to move back to the USA prior to the shows in July. However, the boys were resolute and made their way to Europe to see the greatest live show on Earth - Iron Maiden. The fact that they're doing the Days of Future Past Tour focusing not only on the new Senjutsu album but our favorite IM record ever, Somewhere in Time, this was the chance of a lifetime for your intrepid hosts to see an amazing show together. To help walk through some of the amazing memories we made, we've enlisted Steve from Uncle Steve's Iron Maiden Zone Podcast. Steve's deep knowledge and passion for Maiden dates back before the The Wolf & Action even knew each other and he asks the questions Iron Maiden fans want to hear. Besides the performance, setlist, appearances by Eddie (the shootout with Bruce was brilliant) and other details of the show, the boys share a very special encounter (or three) back at the hotel after the show. It was a magical couple of days in Europe for your hosts, making amazing memories that we share with you here. Metal Mayhem ROC-WITCHSLAYER-AFTER 40 YEARS CHICAGO THRASHERS PROPERLY RELEASE DEBUT CD
Greetings Metal Heads- Hope everyone is safe ,healthy and enjoying summer. On This weeks show we feature another one of these Feel Good Metal stories. Today we’re here to talk with Vocalist Jeff Allen of Witchslayer, the heavy metal band from Chicago who in 2023 PROPERLY released its first EVER album, something in the works for 40 years. Unfortunately Following the success of Witchslayer’s 5-song demo in the early 1980’s, Metal Blade Records included the song “I Don’t Want To Die” on the Metal Massacre 4 compilation album ,the group disbanded before a new full length album could be recorded. Fast forward to 2022, original singer Jeff Allen has reformed the band with guitarist Ken Mandat (Damien Thorne), Bassist Mick Lucid (Viscous Circle), and drummer Gabriel Anthony (Tyrant’s Reign). The new album features 11 hard-hitting tracks which were originally written by the original lineup in the early 80s, but recorded by the new lineup. Stay tuned for big things coming from Witchslayer soon! Jeff joins us to talk about the history of the band, the new release, and plans for 2023. Jeff shares details about early Whitchslayer opening for ACCEPT, contacting Metallica during the Kill Em All era and habnging out in California and the sunset strip era. Only Three Lads - Classic Alternative Music Podcast: Top 5 Summer Albums (with classic Athens band Love Tractor)
It's the Summer of Love...Tractor, that is. That's because our friends in seminal Athens band Love Tractor return to O3L for an epic two parter as we discuss our Top 5 Summer Albums! During this first part, guitarists Mark Cline & Mike Richmond and bassist Armistead Wellford recount some wild, hilarious tales of the Athens scene in the '80s and the making of their second album, 1983's Around The Bend. We'll also divulge our #5 through #3 Summer Albums. And, no, you didn't accidentally stumble upon the High Times podcast. About Love Tractor: It is no act of misguided hyperbole to declare the genre-bending, art rock pioneers, Love Tractor one of the most influential bands of the past 43 years. As one of the inadvertent architects of the Athens, Georgia scene and sound, Love Tractor along with Pylon, The B-52’s, and R.E.M. were essential in staking out the jangly and disco-driven rock that would have — and still has—a huge influence on subsequent generations. Of those bands, Love Tractor always stood out as the most artistically brave and willing to fail in order to succeed. In 1983, Love Tractor released their second album, Around the Bend, which was accompanied by a popular MTV video for the song "Spin Your Partner." The album showcased the band's growth and evolution, incorporating vocals and other experimentations to enhance their sound. The record was well-received critically and commercially— topping the college charts, and solidifying Love Tractor's place in the alternative music landscape. Around The Bend (40th Anniversary Remastered Edition) is due out September 1, 2023, on Propeller Sound Recordings. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Famous & Gravy: Secret Chord (Leonard Cohen)
He was an unlikely and reluctant pop star, if in fact he ever was one. In the 1960s, he lived in a house on the Greek island of Hydra, where he wrote a pair of novels. He was 33 when his first record was released in 1967. In the early 1970s, his record company concocted an advertising campaign where they called him “the master of erotic despair.” Around 1994, he abandoned his music career and moved to Mt. Baldy monastery, where he was ordained a Buddhist monk. His best-known song, a majestic and meditative ballad which has been endlessly covered, is called “Hallelujah”. Famous & Gravy is created and co-hosted by Amit Kapoor and Michael Osborne. This episode was produced by Jacob Weiss. Ep 538Decibel Geek Podcast - Cadillac Dreams with Bill Barnett - Ep538
EWe continue KISSmas in July with a trip back to 1975 in Cadillac, Michigan! Bill Barnett was a member of the Cadillac High School football team and was at ground zero for one of the most unique moments in KISStory as KISS visited Cadillac, Michigan. If you're unfamiliar with the history, we'll quickly bring you up to speed. The 1974 Cadillac High School football team was in a slump. To motivate the team, assistant coach Jim Neff started playing KISS music in the weight room and locker room. To take things a step further, defensive formations were named after KISS songs. This unique approach would go on to fire up the squad and result in the team winning a title. Realizing what a unique story this was, Coach Neff contacted KISS' management office and told them the story. The band and management seized on the unique story and agreed to come to Cadillac in 1975 during the school's homecoming week. The band would perform a concert in the school gym, meet with city leaders the next morning and finish things off being featured in the homecoming parade downtown. In this discussion, Bill Barnett shares his memories of being a player on that KISStoric football team, his memories of Gene, Paul, Ace, and Peter, and much more. The story of how the whole event came together has to be heard to be believed as well as the legacy it's created. Bill also fills us in on different potential film projects that might be happening to document the event in the future; one of which involves a rock legend coming to Cadillac himself to research. Ugly American Werewolf in London: Metallica - Kill Em All with Jay from The Hook Rocks Podcast
Kill Em All, the debut album from heavy metal heroes Metallica, was released July 25, 1983 but not to much fanfare. They didn't have the budget (or desire) to make videos and their sound was so loud and aggressive, you never heard them on rock radio back then. MTV was happy with bands like Men at Work and Duran Duran to be beamed to the suburbs which simply weren't ready for the thrash that Metallica brought with them. The album only sold about 60,000 copies the first year it was out. But it was the start of something which wouldn't be realized until almost a decade later. To help us better understand the significance of Kill Em All and the rise of thrash, we've enlisted Jay Scott - our Pantheon Podcasts brother from The Hook Rocks and The Zeppelin Chronicles with Shout It Out Loudcast. Jay has been listening to Metallica since the beginning and theorizes that this album was the death of glam rock even though at the time it went completely unnoticed. We go track by track and Jay talks about the night he road his bike to a bowling alley at midnight for a chance to gaze upon the boys from Metallica. It may have started slow out of the gates but this album is the foundation for what is now the biggest band in the world. Shout It Out Loudcast: "Out Of Control"
EThis week Tom & Zeus review the 1980 solo album from former KISS drummer Peter Criss, "Out Of Control." Peter Criss had just left KISS a few months earlier and he quickly released Out Of Control, his 2nd solo album if you count the 1978 KISS solo albums. The album was soft rock with a mix of soul and Peter's signature ballads. Unfortunately the album sold poorly and did not chart. Peter believed he was "blackballed" by Casablanca and KISS. However, the music was once again an enormous departure from KISS music that the KISS army expected. This is the 5th album by KISS members outside of KISS that SIOL has reviewed. As usual they rank the songs and then rank the album and covers against the four previous KISS member albums outside of KISS. So remember There's Nothing Better Than being By Myself when you listen to this album! Only Three Lads - Classic Alternative Music Podcast: Top 5 Songs about the Weather
"I wanted to be with you alone/And talk about the weather." Well put, Rollie & Curt. You could even say that we're head over heels about talking about songs about talking about the weather (or something like that). And this week's supersized episode is a whole lotta talk about the weather. It's a whole lotta sunshine. A whole lotta rainbows. A whole lotta fun. A whole lotta laughs. A whole lotta (electric) mayhem. A whole lotta Van. A whole lotta Yoko. A whole lotta Studs Turkel. And, most importantly, a whole lotta Rob. That's because our Third Lad this week is a kindred spirit, Rob Kassees, one of the hosts of the awesome podcast 1001 Album Complaints. Each week, Rob and his friends dissect a different album from Robert Dimery's book 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die. They approach each record with humor and an infectious mix of respect and irreverence, share stories and facts behind its creation, and ultimately vote whether you do truly need to hear the selected album before you die. It's a great show that gets a seal of approval from us! https://linktr.ee/thechopunlimited Also: A brand new O3L game to commemorate Rob's appearance with us, Kill or Die! Plus, new music by Sheffield shoegazers The Suncharms ('Telescope') and Power Pop Hall of Famers Flashcubes (a cover of The Motors' 'Forget About You'). S2 Ep 35Rock is Lit: Franz Nicolay On His Novel ‘Someone Should Pay For Your Pain’, His Bands The Hold Steady & World Inferno Friendship Society, & More
Well, this is it: the Season 2 finale! What could be better than having a great novelist AND musician as my last guest for the summer. Enter Franz Nicolay. Franz is here to talk about his rock novel ‘Someone Should Pay For Your Pain’, a story that follows singer-songwriter Rudy, his conflicted relationship with a successful former protégé named Ryan, and Rudy’s young niece, Lily, who wants to travel with him and whose surprise appearance forces a reckoning with himself and his past. ‘Buzzfeed’ named it one of its “42 Great Books To Read” for spring 2021, stating, “Starting at the midlife crisis of an early-aughts indie rock never-was, Franz Nicolay delivers a tight-fisted gut punch of a novel, weaving a road-weary world with a lyricist's skill for evocation, emotion, and economy. . . . A knockout fiction debut from a longtime troubadour.” In addition to records under his own name, Franz Nicolay was a member of cabaret-punk orchestra World Inferno Friendship Society and is still a member of The Hold Steady, which ‘Rolling Stone’ magazine called “one of the all-time great New York bands.” Franz has also recorded or performed with dozens of other acts. His first book, the nonfiction ‘The Humorless Ladies of Border Control’, was named a “Season’s Best Travel Book” by ‘The New York Times’. His second book, the novel ‘Someone Should Pay For Your Pain’, was named one of ‘Rolling Stone’s “Best Music Books of 2021.” His writing has appeared in ‘The New York Times’, ‘Slate’, ‘The Paris Review Daily’, ‘The Kenyon Review Online’, ‘Ploughshares’, the ‘Los Angeles Review of Books’, ‘Threepenny Review’, and elsewhere. He has taught at UC–Berkeley and is currently a faculty member in music and written arts at Bard College and in Columbia University’s MFA fiction program. Jam Journals: Are Greta Van Fleet Posers?
Greta Van Fleet puts a new spin on classic rock with blaring guitar riffs that could've come from every smokey basement in the 70s. Their concert was a tribute to the genre giants but did not pay any homage. Instead, it was a direct lineage of rock's greatest mythologies, as if music and time had never moved forward. It was as if there weren't nearly 50 years of history separating reality and the music. But were the "Safari Song" rockers the genre's savior or misguided kids with their heads in the clouds? Jam Journals is a podcast that explores music history through live concert performances.
