Imbalanced History: All The Leaves Are Brown: The Mamas & The Papas!

E

There's no doubt about it, the story told by author Scott Shea in his book, All The Leaves Are Brown: How The Mamas And The Papas Came Together And Broke Apart is a wild, drug and sex-soaked tale that generated a ton of questions from the Imbalanced Boys. Scott joins Markus and Ray this week to talk about the band, the characters in their tale, the Folk scene that led to the band, the story of Monterey, and about the book itself, of course! Ugly American Werewolf in London: The Police - Outlandos D'Amour

1978 was an interesting time for music. Bigger 70s acts like Aerosmith, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath & Deep Purple were breaking up or having issues. Punk was the hottest thing in the music industry. New wave was on the horizon as was the real game changer in 1981, MTV. Bands that would forge their way to superstardom in the 80s via MTV released their debuts in 1978 - Van Halen, Dire Straits, The Cars and The Police. WIth a young songwriting genius on the bass in Sting, a sturdy veteran of the road & the studio in Andy Summers and an intellectual drumsmith in Stewart Copeland, they were too good to be just another punk band. So they blended reggae, punk, and rock with relatable lyrics and built the foundation on which their sound would grow and take them to immense success. The subjects of the 10 songs on Outlandos D'Amour vary from prostitution (Roxanne), suicide (Can't Stand Losing You), fame (Peanuts) and even a blow-up sex doll (Be My Girl - Sally). And yet it all comes together as a fresh sound that is still identifiable to The Police. These three make a lot of noise but it's mostly upbeat, jump up and down fun, especially on the crescendo building (and The Wolf's personal favorite) So Lonely. The album went platinum in the US & UK (and Canada, France, Australia, etc) and gave The Police the foothold they needed to eventually become the biggest band in the world in 1983 with Synchronicity. Shout It Out Loudcast: Dorm Damage With Tom & Zeus "Farewell Tours"

E

On the 33rd Episode of Dorm Damage With Tom & Zeus discuss farewell tours by legendary bands. Lately it seems that many legendary bands are going on so-called farewell tours. Bands like KISS, The Eagles, Aerosmith and more. Although it has been cliché to mock these tours as "farewell," they have become normalized. Bands announce they are on a farewell tour only to be back on the road in a few years once again. The guys debate why bands keep coming back, why they call them "farewell" and what's the problem good and bad. So tune in for the final episode of Dorm Damage With Tom And Zeus ... or is it? Rock is Lit Bonus EP: Zeena Schreck shares her memories of her godfather, avant-garde filmmaker and occultist Kenneth Anger

bonus

This bonus episode is an addendum to Episode 6 on Zachary Lazar’s rock novel ‘Sway’, a story that brings together the early Rolling Stones, members of the Manson Family, and avant-garde filmmaker and occultist Kenneth Anger. In the last segment of that episode, Zeena Schreck shares her memories of her godfather Kenneth Anger and gives her insight into some of his work. This bonus episode features Zeena’s segment in isolation. Zeena Schreck (formerly LaVey) is an artist, musician, and Tibetan Buddhist yogini, as well as former High Priestess of the Church of Satan (founded by her late father Anton LaVey). Topics Zeena and I cover in this bonus episode include how her father made Kenneth Anger her godfather; her personal and working relationship with Kenneth; his interest in Aleister Crowley; the making of and background on some of his iconic films, especially the 1969 film ‘Invocation of My Demon Brother’ (a movie that figures large in Zachary Lazar’s novel ‘Sway’); Kenneth’s relationship with Anita Pallenberg and her influence on the Rolling Stones; Bobby Beausoleil; how Kenneth’s work influenced MTV and music videos; and more. Only Three Lads - Classic Alternative Music Podcast: Top 5 Motown Influenced Songs (with Arthur Alexander)

E

Needless to say, we have fun every week here on O3L, but this one will have ya dancing in the streets guaranteed! We just can't help ourselves when it comes to talking about music influenced by "The Sound of Young America," Motown Records...especially when Heaven must have sent us this week's guest from above. What's going on, you ask? We guess you say, what can make us feel this way? Well, by now, you've probably heard it through the grapevine that it's the marvelous Arthur Alexander! (Oh, was that subtle enough?) Arthur has a very powerful story of rock n' roll salvation. Growing up in communist Poland in the '60s, Arthur discovered the power of rock through records pressed on postcards and through scratchy radio signals that the government attempted to silence, deeming this new musical form of freedom as a threat to society. It was the sound that united and invigorated legions of youth, inspired kids to form bands, and, for Arthur, paved the way for a new life in America. In the mid-70s, his band The Poppees were a part of the burgeoning New York scene, playing venues like CBGB and Max's Kansas City alongside The Heartbreakers, Ramones, and Blondie, despite eschewing straight ahead punk rock for the sounds of Merseybeat. After The Poppees, Arthur formed rockin' power pop group Sorrows, fulfilling his vision of crossing ABBA with The Sex Pistols. Sorrows issued two albums for CBS, 1980's Teenage Heartbreak (the sessions from that era also captured on the Bad Times, Good Times album) and 1981's Love Too Late. The latter was so badly botched by the record label that it prompted Sorrows to reform four decades later to put things right, to record the album that it should have been all along: Love Too Late...The Real Album. Arthur has also issued two marvelous solo albums in recent years, 2018's One Bar Left, and the brand new 2023 LP Steppin' Out on Big Stir Records. https://www.bigstirrecords.com. Ep 108See Hear Podcast - Saturday Night Fever

Disco music had been a thing from the early 70s on, but not so much in the mainstream. Parts of the African-American, Latino and gay communities had been cherishing the music as an event - going out to dance in discotheques was the thing. There's are books that go through the history of disco music and what put that music underground. Some of the music became top forty success stories, but disco really exploded in 1977 thanks to a movie featuring a TV actor and songs by a group past their glory days. Welcome to episode 108 of See Hear Podcast. Robert Stigwood bought the film rights to a fictitious article by Nik Cohn called “Tribal Rites of the New Saturday Night”. He invested $3.5M into making the film, and made sure his act The Bee Gees were going to be featured on the soundtrack. John Travolta in between Welcome Back Kotter seasons starred as a young working class man from Brooklyn who hates his job and home life, and only finds solace when dancing at the 2001 Odyssey Discotheque. The film is a great character study of what drives people and their self esteem. Kerry, Tim and I welcome first-time guest to the show, Dan Fisher. Dan has started a great new podcast called Let's Talk Ten where he and guests run off lists about all manner things devoted to pop culture. I invited him to our virtual table and Saturday Night Fever was his pick.....it triggered a great discussion, although as Frank Santopadre would say, we barely scratched the surface. The film has so many thematic elements to riff on. We cover some of those, but we also look at disco as a phenomenon (and how it influenced Chasidic music and Joe Raposo), 70s Hollywood movie anti-heroes, the violent backlash to disco music, and aspiring for something better in life. A warning: I sing – twice. We're grateful that Dan came to us with this pick and was such an active participant in the episode. It won't be his last time with us. You should search for him on Facebook to follow his “Rank 'Em” posts (explained at the start of the episode), and you can find Let's Talk Ten at https://letstalktenpodcast.buzzsprout.com/ or whatever app you use to listen to podcasts. Also, we're giving a shout out to fellow Pantheon Podcasters Bruce and Ryan over at Prisoners of Rock and Roll. Their latest episode is called Does Disco Suck? It will make a good companion piece to ours. Catch it at https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/does-disco-suck/id1534602232?i=1000625127339 Canned Heat might have meant it differently, but the message is the same: Don't forget to boogie. Famous & Gravy: Sleepless Sally (Nora Ephron)

In the summer of 1961 she was a summer intern in the Kennedy White House; she once said she was probably the only intern that President Kennedy had never hit on. Her second husband was the Watergate journalist Carl Bernstein. She was a journalist, a blogger, an essayist, a novelist, a playwright, an Oscar-nominated screenwriter and a movie director — a rarity in a film industry whose directorial ranks were and continue to be dominated by men. Her box-office successes included “You’ve Got Mail” , “Julie & Julia” , “Sleepless in Seattle,” and “When Harry Met Sally.” Today’s dead celebrity is Nora Ephron. Only Three Lads - Classic Alternative Music Podcast: Top 5 Colourful Songs (with The Primitives!)

This week, we taste the proverbial rainbow with our Top 5 Colourful Songs...that is, songs with colours in the title. And what an incredible thrill it is to have Tracy Tracy and Paul Court from one of the greatest indie pop bands of the O3L era, The Primitives, join us! The Primitives are an English indie pop band who formed in Coventry in 1984, disbanded in 1992, and reformed in 2009 for one of the best "second acts" in music. After a string of classic Top 10 indie singles on the band's Lazy Records imprint, they signed with RCA for three albums: Lovely (1988, which spawned the #5 hit 'Crash'), Pure (1989), and Galore (1992). Since reforming, The Primitives have released a handful of EPs and singles, including 2022's 'Don't Know Where To Start' and this year's 'I Won't Care' (both of which you'll hear on this very episode!), and two full length albums, Echoes and Rhymes (2012) and Spin-O-Rama (2014). This one is a lot of fun, and as real as it gets - we talk about dogs, sweets, friendship, travel and...uh, Iron Maiden, as well as The Primitives' roots (both musical and hair), return and future. Also, as a technical note: You will notice some audio imperfections in this episode. Brett was recording in Berkeley in his son's mostly empty studio apartment, with a cheap mic and very boomy room ambience. And, for some unknown reason, Tracy's local track stopped recording after about 20 minutes, so we had to grab the rest from a lower resolution combined conference audio track. It made for some very tricky editing and moments of inconsistent volume so we could capture as much of this fabulous conversation as possible. Learn more about your ad choices. I'm In Love With That Song: Paul McCartney "Back On My Feet"

In the late 1980’s, Paul McCartney took a shot at writing some songs with Elvis Costello. The ultimate result was a set of 15 songs, some of them never seeing the light of day until years later. But “Back On My Feet” was the first song that was released, buried as a B-side on the “Once Upon A Long Ago” single. It deserved better. Here, we explore the song in detail and shine a light on this overlooked gem. “Back On My Feet” (Paul McCartney & Declan MacManus) Copyright 1989 MPL Communications Ltd/Plageant Visions Ltd Learn more about your ad choices.
