Ugly American Werewolf in London: Steve Kilbey of The Church

E

For our 150th episode (and thanks to all of our loyal listeners in the UK, the Netherlands, the US and around the world for helping us get this far) we are pleased to welcome a singer/songwriter who we grew up watching on MTV with his band The Church - Steve Kilbey. For more than 40 years Steve's led Australian psychedelic rock band The Church and has returned to the US to promote their latest record, The Hypnogogue, which Steve admits could be their 25th or 36th record - it's hard to add them all up. The Church rose to prominence in the US in 1988 thanks to MTV's 120 Minutes and college radio as their album Starfish received exposure thanks to the hit Under The Milky Way. But the band had already seen success in their home country with songs like The Unguarded Moment and Tantalized and we discuss the difficulty Steve has in curating a setlist which is satisfactory to him, the band and their fans. Steve pulls no punches talking about the business, his "too cool" attitude when doing TV interviews back in the day, his reluctance to release live albums and regales us with stories including one when two fans broke into the dressing room to demand he play one more song. Steve is an incredible songwriter and a very genuine person and you'll hear the joy The Wolf & Action Jackson had spending a little time talking with him. Thanks to everyone for listening, subscribing and downloading The Ugly American Werewolf in London Rock Podcast! We appreciate you, share your love of rock music and want to hear from you on what we can do to make the next 150 episodes as good as they can be!! Only Three Lads: Label Spotlight - Slash Records (with Power Popper Dolph Chaney)

E

We fix our gaze upon another of the legendary record labels of the O3L era, Slash Records. Slash was formed in Los Angeles in 1978 by the late Bob Biggs. Over the course of its 22 year run as an active label, Slash released slew of classics by the likes of The Germs, X, Violent Femmes, Fear, The Blasters, Los Lobos, Rank and File, The Del Fuegos, The Gun Club, Dream Syndicate, Misfits, Robyn Hitchcock, Burning Spear, BoDeans, Faith No More, Failure, Green On Red, Grant Lee Buffalo, L7, The Chills, Rammstein, Soul Coughing, The Verlaines, and more. Boasting such an eclectic and iconic roster, how are we possibly going to pick our Top 5 songs from the label? We'd better call in the reinforcement! We'll take "Great O3L Third Lads" for $1,000, Alex. "This talented singer/songwriter just released his highly anticipated brand new album, Mug, on one of the best modern indie labels, Big Stir Records." "Who is Dolph Chaney?" Yes, this week's Third Lad is rockin' Chicagoland indie-pop singer/songwriter/guitarist Dolph Chaney, and you'll be seeing his "mug" all over in the near future, because his new album is pretty dang special. It's full of memorable melodies, indelible hooks, witty, intelligent lyrics, and playful production. Mug continues Dolph's evolution from '90s lo-fi troubadour to widescreen guitar pop auteur. Get it now at https://bigstirrecords.com/dolph-chaney. We go in depth with Dolph on his wonderful new album, critical cats, recording career, songwriting process, alliance with Big Stir and producer Nick Bertling, 2016 Jeopardy! appearance, and Mug merchandising (from mugs to...thongs??). It's Not That Bad - Volcano

In 2004, Bad Religion released the song Los Angeles Is Burning. The song has references to Orwell’s 1984…but let’s be honest. We all know that deep down, what they were really singing about was the 1997 movie Volcano…and sing about it, they should because that film is not that bad. Learn more about your ad choices. E

Introducing Steven Rosen, author of Tonechaser, a book about the late Edward Van Halen culled from interviews and experiences across their 25+ year friendship. Steven has written for Guitar Player, Guitar World and many other Rock publications. He has authored numerous books about rock legends Jeff Beck, Prince, Bruce Springsteen, Black Sabbath, Free/Bad Company and Randy Rhoads. Here is PART 2 of our conversation. We begin PART 2 with the Sammy Hagar era. We discuss with Eddie's search for a new singer and his feelings about Sammy during the 'Honeymoon' period. What might have created the rift between Eddie & Sammy? What might be the reason for Eddie's drive and obsession with music to the detriment of his own health and relationships? Was Eddie able to achieve happiness in his life? What was the difference between Eddie the ROCKSTAR and Eddie the MAN? We delve into Van Halen III with Gary Cherone. How did Eddie feel about his 3rd singer and how did we deal with the crushing public rejection of the record and of Gary? We also discuss the loss of the friendship between Steven and Eddie. Who were some of the friends that Eddie had both in and out of the industry? I ask Steven some questions about Eddie from my lifelong friends Tom Lang & John Hardin. Steven gives us some great answers to these questions:) Buy TONECHASER! www.tonechaserbook.com And please leave a review!:) All of this, and of course, we put Steven on the HOT SEAT by asking the 10 questions made famous by Bernard Pivot and then James Lipton on Inside The Actors Studio with a twist!:) Learn more about your ad choices. Comes A Time: Brandon Ross of LightShed Ventures

This episode of Comes a Time featured an insightful discussion with tech and media analyst Brandon Ross of LightShed Ventures. As an expert on new technologies like AI, Ross provided a nuanced perspective on both the positives and potential pitfalls. He emphasized that while AI is advancing rapidly, authentic human artistry and creativity connecting with an audience remains irreplaceable. The conversation explored how technology immersing our lives can make shared live experiences more valued. Ross drew an analogy to professional wrestling, where improvisation and crowd connection can enable performers to creatively rise above limitations. Similarly, as industries like music and comedy navigate disruption, adapting with flexibility and seizing new opportunities is key. Overall, Ross struck an optimistic tone about human resilience, believing technology may drive people back to nature and real connections. With balanced wisdom, he maintains we can thoughtfully guide technology’s double-edged potential. https://twitter.com/BrandoLightShed https://signal.nfx.com/investors/brandon-ross A Time Podcast and content posted by Comes A Time is presented solely for general informational, educational, and entertainment purposes. Shout It Out Loudcast: Album Review Crew "Trash"

E

On the 45th Episode of the Album Review Crew of Shout It Out Loudcast, Tom, Zeus & Sonny review Alice Cooper's 1989 successful comeback album, "Trash." Trash was Alice Cooper's 11th solo studio album. The album was a commercial hit, going platinum and selling over two million albums. The album also reached number 20 on the US Billboard album charts. To complete his comeback, Alice enlisted the 80's hit songwriter at the time, Desmond Child. Child not only produced the album, but also co-wrote 9 of the 10 songs on the album. Mutual friends like Jon Bon Jovi, Richie Sambora and Aerosmith's Steven Tyler, Joe Perry, Tom Hamilton and Joey Kramer also made appearances. The album was a complete dive into the "hair metal scene." The songs contained Alice's unique vocals, personality and snarl combined with the Desmond Child's songwriting style. As usual the boys breakdown and dissect the tracks and rank the songs. They then rank the album and the album cover against the previous 43 albums reviewed on the Album Review Crew. This was Sonny's pick. Find out if this Maniac Sonny's pick is Poison, Trash or a Spark In The Dark! Ugly American Werewolf in London: On First Listen - Brain Salad Surgery by Emerson, Lake & Palmer

The Wolf and Action Jackson thirst for knowledge about rock n roll. The bands, the musicians, the albums, the songs, the studios, the history - we want to know it all!! But no one knows everything, we all have blind spots. So as a way to further our own knowledge and understanding of rock music, we've developed a new, somewhat regular segment we call On First Listen. Here we take an album that we've never listened to and give it our usual track x track evaluation. Everyone has albums that they've always been curious about or have seen on Top 50 lists or had a friend swear is the best kept secret on the planet but for whatever reason, you've never heard it. We kick off this new series with 1973's Brain Salad Surgery by Emerson, Lake & Palmer. Our heroes were late to the prog landscape and when they first got into music via MTV in the 1980s, Genesis and Yes were pop bands, not prog rock giants. The boys didn't really come to appreciate progressive rock until later in life. However, Carl Palmer (the Palmer in Emerson, Lake & Palmer) they had familiarity with through his work in Asia and he was a guest on UAWIL #80. But the The Wolf & Action had never listened to the album Carl called his favorite in ELP, Brain Salad Surgery. They were familiar with the cover by HR Giger (Alien) but didn't see the hidden pictures from the original work of art. Nor did they know the meaning of Brain Salad Surgery (we get into it). And though they knew their song that started, "Welcome back my friends to the show that never ends" they had no idea what the name of the song was (Karn Evil 9 First Impression Part 2 doesn't exactly roll off the tongue). Despite all that it is considered one of the true prog masterpieces of all time. So the boys set out to explore what Keith Emerson, Greg Lake and Carl Palmer were up to in 1973. Will it become an instant favorite? Or will it be something they appreciate but never listen to again? You'll have to listen to find out what they think about ELP's 1973 classic. S3 Ep 36Rock is Lit: From ‘60s Southern Rock to Nina Simone’s Soul: Peter McDade on His Rock Novel ‘Songs by Honeybird’ with Alan Light on His Bio of Nina Simone, ‘What Happened, Miss Simone?’

We’re starting Season 3 with a bang. Peter McDade is here to talk about his novel ‘Songs by Honeybird’, a story that features a fictional integrated rock band from 1960s Macon, Georgia, that fell off the musical map after a fire killed the lead singer and guitarist and also . . . possibly, the band’s African American drummer. To put it more succinctly, ‘Songs by Honeybird’ is about a band, a romantic break-up, a Ph.D candidate in History’s research, secrets, fathers, racism, Atlanta, the sixties and the repercussions the South still feels from that period, and . . . a talking dog. In the last segment of the episode Alan Light joins me to talk about musician, civil rights activist, and my fellow native-North Carolinian Nina Simone. The reason I’ve roped Alan into popping in is because one of the two main characters in ‘Songs by Honeybird’, the piano-playing Nina, is named after the legendary artist. Alan is a rock critic, journalist, former editor-in-chief of ‘Spin’ and ‘Vibe’ magazines, a former senior writer at ‘Rolling Stone’, and author of the book ‘What Happened, Miss Simone?’, a biography of Nina Simone inspired by the Academy Award-nominated Netflix documentary of the same title. You won’t want to miss our convo. Subscribe to my YouTube channel, @ChristyHallberg, to catch the upcoming YouTube-only full interview with Alan Light about Nina Simone. The Metallica Report - Episode 10: Week of October 4, 2023

This week on The Metallica Report… It’s all about Power Trip, this weekend’s massive hard rock festival cranking up at the Empire Polo Club in Indio, CA. Gracing the bill of the three-day fest are Guns N’ Roses, Iron Maiden, AC/DC, Judas Priest, Tool, and, of course, Metallica. It’s hard to imagine now, but Metallica wasn’t always on the poster, let alone at the top! James reflects on the band’s festival journey and what it’s felt like to “move up the ladder.” Lars recounts 2016’s Desert Trip, the festival featuring legends like Paul McCartney, The Rolling Stones, and Bob Dylan that inspired this weekend’s hard rock event. He addresses his admiration for his Power Trip co-headliners and his excitement to get this group of bands in one place. And finally, he touches on his relationship with Guns N’ Roses over the decades and how, yes… he would like to hang out with Axl over a cup of tea! Only Three Lads - Classic Alternative Music Podcast: Top 5 Long Titled Songs

E

This week, we cover our Top 5 Long Titled Songs. How long is long, you ask? Well, we asked last week's Third Lad, Archie Moore from Velocity Girl, to tell us how long is long...to which he replied NINE words or more, and to which he is probably laughing himself into convulsions thinking about how much we struggled with the topic. So, we say #ThanksArchie. Joining us in this very difficult task is Lance Carmine, a long time O3L listener, friend of the show, the podcast's very own Cousin Brucie/Stu Sutcliffe, radio veteran, and possessor of great musical taste and hair. We have an absolutely uproarious time chatting about alternative music, 8-tracks, the state of radio, global warming, Yuma, Eddie Vedder, Bobby McFerrin, K-Pop, and playing the latest world famous O3L game, Name That Long Title! First Concert Memories #3: Def Leppard with Neil from Def Lep Pod

On the third edition of our monthly sidecast, First Concert Memories, we welcome back good friend to the show Neil Poole from the glorious Def Lep Pod. Neil's passion and knowledge for all things Def Leppard made him an easy choice to give us the lowdown on the first time he ever saw his favorite band on the Adrenalize Tour in 1992 in Birmingham, England. The Wolf & Action Jackson saw the band for the first time just months later on the same tour in Orlando with a slightly adjusted setlist but the show was amazing. Neil has told us for years that it's tough being a Def Leppard fan in the UK as they are not as beloved as they are in the US. We relive the night he took a 2+ hour bus ride with his older brother from Liverpool to Birmingham to witness his beloved Leppards live. This was the second tour performed by the boys in the round but the first time they performed in the round in the UK (according to Neil) as arenas in the 1980s weren't necessarily equipped to handle all the gear Def Leppard requires to put on their extraordinary show. From guitar solos, levitating drum kits, crowd sing-alongs and a killer setlist this was Def Leppard at the height of their power in the UK and Neil shares his memories from this special moment in his life. I'm In Love With That Song: Bettye LaVette "I Still Want To Be Your Baby"

Bettye LaVette is the epitome of perseverance. She cut her first record in 1962 at the age of 16, but it took over 40 years before she received the recognition and respect she deserved. In between, she weathered every injustice that the music business threw at her. But she never gave up, she never stopped working, she never stopped singing… in fact, she just got better. Bettye is more than just a singer; she’s an interpreter who can transform any song into something new & special. On this episode, we focus on a track from her 2007 album The Scene of the Crime, and trace the path that brought her to this album– one of my all-time favorites. “I Still Want To Be Your Baby (Take Me As I Am)” (Eddie Hinton) Copyright Eddie Hinton Music (BMI) Learn more about your ad choices. Ugly American Werewolf in London: Traveling Wilburys - Volume 1

October 25, 1988 saw the release of Traveling Wilburys Volume 1, the debut of a supergroup that no one saw coming. Born out of an idea that George Harrison and Jeff Lynne shared as they worked on his hit album Cloud Nine, they decided they'd like to make music with friends and people they admired. Jeff wanted to work with Roy Orbison and George wanted to work with Bob Dylan. After enlisting the help of new buddy Tom Petty, they set about putting together the most high-powered supergroup of all-time. They all took turns writing, singing lead and playing guitar and the results were strong - more than 3 million in US sales and a grammy nomination for album of the year. The harmonies between all their voices are something to behold and while some songs give most everyone a chance to sing lead (Handle With Care, End of the Line) others are showcases for their individual styles like like Roy Orbison on Not Alone Anymore and Tweeter and the Monkey Man for Bob Dylan. You can really sense the joy coming from George Harrison as he had been jaded with the music industry and was happy to be part of something special again. Roy was completely chuffed to be back on top of the charts (#3 US, #16 UK, #1 Canada, #1 Australia) but unfortunately he would pass away mere weeks after the album was released. This collaboration helped revive the careers of all these legends and they would continue to work together on each others projects immediately after this. It may not be our typical musical style but as this record turns 35, it was fun to reflect and take a listen to what true rock legends can accomplish by working together and having a bit of fun.
