On September 20th, 2014, dog walker Barbara Denham entered the walled graveyard of St. Margaret of Antioch church in Barking, London. She saw a young man sitting up against the cemetery wall amidst the ruins of the old abbey. As Ms. Denham approached, the young man never reacted or indicated that he heard her or the collie. Hesitantly, she walked over and found that twenty-one-year-old Daniel Whitworth was dead. Ms. Denham immediately phoned the police saying, “I was the same woman that found the other body a few weeks ago. Imagine you are a probation officer and you get a phone call that one of your offenders hasn’t checked in with you as of late. Since he is an elderly man in his late 70s, you hope he is ok. It is April 13, 2010, an officer goes to the home to check on him. The officer goes into the home and talks to the man. He then walks about the house to get a look around which is standard. It all looks ok. Located in the back of the home, the officer discovers a room. This room has a giant padlock on the door from the outside. Immediately sensing something is not right, he demands to get into each of the rooms. What authorities would find in the house is what nightmares are made of. It is a scene straight out of one of those haunted houses kids visit on Halloween night, but this was no haunted house, and no one --children or adults --should have to see what was inside. On an unseasonably warm day in August of 1973, while a crowd of around 13,000 fans watched the North Adelaide football team play the Norwood Red Legs at the Adelaide Oval, 11-year-old Joanne Ratcliffe assisted 4-year-old Kirste Gordon to the bathroom. The girls never returned to their seats.Although there were many witnesses, the girls have never been found. Their disappearance is one of South Australia's best-known crimes. In the summer of 1985, the folks in the small town of Gillespie, Illinois were shaken to their core when 16-year-old Bridget Drobney was found brutally murdered.Three men were arrested and one, Robert Turner was sentenced to death. In January of 2003, Governor Ryan commuted all 167 of Illinois’ death row inmates to life sentences. One of those was obviously, Robert Turner. Years later, In March of 2011, Governor Pat Quinn would abolish the death penalty in the state of Illinois altogether. In June of 2022, Turner was able to get a clemency hearing with the help of the Illinois Prison Project. The Illinois Prison Project fights for people serving “unjust, unnecessary and excessive” sentences in Illinois. Friday, March 25th, 1988, Lisa got in her Honda and headed north. She would take Interstate 25 to Casper, Wyoming, and from there she would take the mostly two-lane US-20/26 to Greybull, where she would then finish the trip at her boyfriend's house in Cody, Wyoming, on US14. She’d planned to stay the night there and make the remaining hour-and-a-half trek to Billings the next morning with her boyfriend in tow. When Lisa Marie didn’t arrive at Ed's house in Cody, as planned, he was immediately worried and called her parents. Lisa was nowhere to be found. Today we are going nearby to St Charles Missouri where a local businessman was found shot to death inside his office on June 8, 2007, by a postwoman. It was about 12:30 in the afternoon when she called 9-1-1 and informed the operator that the man had been shot and, she thought he was dead. As she is on the phone with 911, a police officer drives by and she flags him down. The officer enters the business and finds the man. The officer clearly identifies a gunshot to the head. On a flat and lonely stretch of highway in San Joaquin County, California, in February of 2012, onlookers were horrified as a backhoe violently tore into an abandoned well, nicknamed "Loren's Boneyard." We are headed to Cape Cod where the Montgomery County police just received a phone about a female body on the beach. When they arrive, they found a young woman on her stomach, both her arms reaching into the sand. She was topless and her back was severely sunburned. As they get a closer look, they realize both of her hands have been cut off and part of her face is missing. Police discover she has been out here for several days, with beach-goers simply thought she was sunbathing. The woman had no identification and the media dubbed her the ‘lady in the dunes’. Police try to chase leads but they are coming up empty-handed and the case goes cold. Today we are headed to the outskirts of Dallas to a seedy area known as Oak Cliff, where income is low, and crime is high. It is 1990, and gangs, drugs, and sex workers frequent the area. Crack was big, and people would do almost anything to get it, including selling themselves for enough money to get a hit of crack, and then the cycle would repeat itself. Officer Regina Smith is on duty on December 13, 1990, when a call comes in pertaining to a body. It was a sex worker by the name of Mary Pratt. Her body was found on a street laid out for all the world to see. Obviously, the killer was proud of his work and wanted everyone to see her. At 11:24 PM on Saturday, April 29th, 1989, police in Alton, Illinois received a call from Robert Sims who said he had found his wife, Paula, unresponsive on the floor of their home, and their six-week-old baby girl was missing. Paula Sims said that she had been taking out the trash an hour earlier when she was confronted by a masked man carrying a handgun. After ordering her back into the house, the armed intruder struck her on the back of the head causing her to lose consciousness. A woman comes out of the river water screaming for help. Frantic and barely able to get the story out, tells the man that she and her two sons were on a boat, and the boat capsized and her oldest son is missing. As police begin to question Judy about the accident, things become questionable from the start. Judy changes her story. In fact, she tells them 4 different stories. She tells officers that they were enjoying the day in the canoe, when they must have hit a tree stump and then tells another officer a snake hopped into the canoe and they panicked and turned it over. Husband and father James Kraig Kahler took really good care of his family by being a great provider. His wife Karen was a pillar of the community who was busy raising their three children. We are headed north to Lake Orion, Michigan, a suburb of Detroit. On August 6, 1994, a man was discovered on his apartment floor. His body is surrounded by blood. The man had fought furiously to escape his killer, as demonstrated by all the injuries on his face and body. His apartment showed no signs of a break-in, but it did look like someone had gone through the apartment. The man was Kevin Boyd, and his body was discovered by his son, Kevin, Jr. What the 16-year-old would encounter would be the absolute worst scenario. On the night of November 5, 1989, first responders arrived at the 3700 block of Delor St in St Louis, Missouri. Inside of an apartment, next to two bloody knives, lay the body of 16-year-old Tina Isa. Tina's father said that he had killed her in self-defense. Police would learn Tina's father, Zein Isa, was a suspected ringleader of a Palestinian terrorist cell and had been under the watchful eye and ear of the FBI. Today we are going to the southern United States to a town named Grassy Creek, North Carolina. It is home to a very well-known and recognized Christmas tree farm. It is January 24, 2008, right before noon, when a panicked call comes into 911 describing a most heinous scene at the Hudler tree farm. The caller explains there are two people who have been shot. The second week of 1977, England saw the coldest January in 14 years. Low pressure carried from northern Europe brought heavy snowfall across the UK. On January 12th, 1977, 28-year-old Billy Hughes was to appear at Chesterfield Magistrates Court on charges of rape and assault. Hughes had other plans. He wasn't going back to prison no matter what the cost. Pulling a stolen knife out from his boots, Billy stabs the guards, orders them out of the car, and makes his escape. Due to high speed and cold, wet roads, he crashed the car. It is October 20, 2007, when a woman calls 911. She is hysterical and crying, barely able to get out the words. She relays to the operator that when she got to her parent's house, she found her mother shot, her father shot, and her brother home and unharmed. Police rush to the scene, but as they are heading to the crime scene, 16-year-old Daniel jumps in his parent's car and takes off. Soon a chase erupts, but Daniel loses control of the vehicle, and officers contain him. Daniel tells officers that his father shot his mother and then turned the gun on himself. Daniel is crying and is put into the patrol car until officers can figure out what just happened. With confusion and adrenaline, no one knows what just occurred, but someone is responsible, and that person is the one no one would suspect, but the reason is even more unbelievable. On September the 15th, 1990, people were walking along a river near Prague when they stumbled up what they thought was a mannequin. As they got closer, they realized it was the body of a young woman. Her body, nude, was left in a vulgar display. Her stocking was wrapped around her neck. The killer had tried to cover her with leaves and debris as if to hide his crime. The woman would turn out to be Blanka Bockova. Blanka had gone out the night before with friends to have drinks. The group decided to leave just before midnight, but Blanka was having fun and decided to stay for just one more. Her friends would say she was talking with a man who looked nearly 40 years of age, but that is all the information they could provide. What authorities could not yet know was that an international serial killer was just getting started, and he was no stranger to police. Alaska, the Last Frontier: It is a place of stunning beauty and rugged wilderness. It is an outdoorsman’s paradise with plenty of big game to hunt and fish to catch. It is also a place where people disappear--some because they want to drop out of the fast-paced rat race and some not by choice. On April 29, 1984, Roger Culp went missing from Hopkinsville. Roger was last seen in the company of a newcomer to the area, a 25-year-old man named Michael Silka. Officers head out to Michael’s remote cabin to see if they can question him about Roger. As soon as they arrive, they notice what looks to be blood outside the cabin. As they approach the door, a man comes out and identifies himself as Michael Silka. He tells the troopers that the blood was from a moose he recently killed and was outside to skin the animal. Michael tells them he hasn’t seen Roger since Roger came by for a quick visit. Content with the explanation, officers leave the cabin. This was a mistake, and many would lose their lives at one man’s hand. It is day six of the 12 Nightmares Before Christmas. We are going to Mosman, a suburb of Sydney, Australia, where 82-year-old widow Gwendolin Mitchellhill was found right outside her apartment building around 4 pm on March 1st, 1989. Two children had just stepped off the elevator; through the glass security doors, they saw the poor woman crawling on her hands and knees with an immense amount of blood coming from her head. The woman’s belongings, shoes, cane lay neatly a few feet away, her pantyhose were off, and her purse was open. Assuming she had fallen and hit her head, an ambulance was called for the woman, and she was rushed to the hospital. One keen-eyed ambulance driver noticed her open purse, noticed her wallet was not inside and reported it to the police. Kind neighbors took it upon themselves to gather Ms. Mitchelhill’s cane and bag and clean all the blood from the sidewalk. This was the first murder by a man known as The Granny Killer. For day five we are going ‘down under’ to Saturday, June 4, 1961. We are in Brisbane where a 55-year-old man named Amos Hurst meets a gentleman outside the Roma Street Railway Station. The two of them partake in lots of drinking and not wanting to end the night, the two head back to Hurst’s hotel room where they continued to drink. As the pair drank to near oblivion, Amos passed out only to wake up to his friend strangling him. Amos tried to fight back and was hit so hard in the face, he died. The killer then undressed Amos and put him in the bed as if he were just sleeping and made his escape. For days the murderer would obsessively check the newspapers for the death. Finally, days later, Amos Hurst’s obituary was in the paper saying that Amos had died of a heart attack. It is January 9, 1990, and just after 1:30 in the morning. Officers arrive at the car and notice all the windows have been shot out. As they get closer, they see something slumped over in the back seat: a man with duct tape covering his mouth, and bullets riddle his body. Officers are careful to search the car for some ID and find it. The man is 42-year-old Christopher Morris. So begins a tale of deceit, betrayal, and murder. It was October 16, 1931, when Winnie Ruth Judd bought a train ticket, boarded the vessel with the two traveling trunks, and made her way to Los Angeles. En route, the trunks began to leak and emit a horrible smell. Police greeted Judd at the Los Angeles station and asked her to open the trunks. Winnie was afraid and mortified on the inside, but her outward demeanor was coy and stand-offish. When asked to smell the trunks, she leaned in and claimed that she couldn't smell anything at all. The baggage attendants pushed her to open the trunks. Claiming that her husband had the keys, she fled the scene. What would occur next would leave many asking what happened and who was responsible? It is May 7, 1976 right before 5pm when a stolen car had been located. The car belonged to a man named Frank Columbo who lived in Elk Grove, a suburb of Chicago. Police Academy 2 was a box office smash and holding on to number 1 at the box office for 4 weeks and We Are The World by USA for Africa was the number 1 song. Coca-Cola released New Coke and women’s hair was as high as a stockbroker on Wall Street.Stephen Eldridge 27year old and 37 years old Maureen “Miki” McDermott were pretty much inseparable from the night they met through mutual friends at a gay bar called In Touch Lounge in Van Nuys, California. Miki was about 10 years older than Stephen but they both were gregarious people and loved being the center of attention. They were great friends. Early on a Sunday morning, a man was driving along Ohio Route 208 when he noticed a woman lying in the middle of the road, As he got closer the woman picked herself up and threw herself at the truck begging for help and screaming that somebody was trying to kill her. The woman was severely burned and covered in scratches from dragging herself a quarter of a mile through branches and undergrowth.
