It is August 5, 1992, just before midnight when 29-year-old Joan Burghardht returns home to her apartment after a night of having fun with friends. When she got inside, she felt something was not right. It scared her enough to call the police. The police arrived at her house and she explained to them about the missing money, the fan, and that it seemed like her dresser drawers had been messed up as if someone was looking for something. Police took her statement and did a sweep of the house. Whoever was in Joan’s apartment earlier was now gone. Officers told her to keep on a few lights and to make sure all the windows and doors stay locked. Fifty-six-year-old Thomas Jones was a reserved kind of fella. He lived modestly and wanted a simple kind of life so the community of Mulford Delaware provided exactly what he wanted and needed. Thomas lived by himself and was a farmer. He owned and operated a small farm but he was not quite your typical farmer. Thomas was a paraplegic but that didn’t stop him from doing what he loved to do including farming his land. It was August 13, 1997, when a hired healthcare nurse stopped by to check on Thomas. The nurse called out his name after not answering the door. As she looked around, she knew something was not quite right. Thomas kept a clean and tidy house and things always had their place. There were dishes on the table and a few papers strewn about. His wheelchair was not in the house, so she ventured outside thinking maybe he was just outside. As she was looking around, she saw something and it was not good. There was a splattering of blood in a line as if something was bleeding as it was walking away. The nurse rushed to call 9-1-1. This is just the start of a twisted tale as it just weirder from here. On October 21, 2009, a 6-year-old neighbor girl who lives nearby shows up and asks if 9-year-old Elizabeth Olten, the youngest of Patty Preiss’s children to come over and play for a bit. At first, Patty said no but we know how convincing two little girls can be and she finally broke and said ok but Elizabeth had to be home by 6 pm for dinner. When 6 pm comes and goes and Elizabeth doesn’t arrive home, her mom knows something is not right. Elizabeth is scared of the dark and would never come home after nightfall. Patty makes a phone call to the neighbor’s house to see what time Elizabeth left their house. Patty is shocked to hear that Elizabeth was never at their house. It is June 4, 1995, in Fredericton, New Brunswick, when eight-year-old Jackie Clarke goes missing. It is February 2008 in Arlington Heights Illinois, a suburb of Chicago, where we first meet a young man by the name of Justin Newman. Justin is a blonde-haired, blue-eyed 20-year old who was working at a home improvement store and trying to figure out what to do with his life. It’s January 18, 1987, at the Alpine Manor Nursing home in Walker, Michigan when a nurse, who was making her rounds, went into the room of a 60-year-old Alzheimer’s patient named Marguerite Chambers. The older woman was unresponsive and not breathing. A team rushed in to revive Marguerite but it was too late. It seems that the woman died sometime during the night. Death is not uncommon in nursing homes but Marguerite was still pretty healthy and her death was not expected. Her family had been in to visit her just the day before and had brought their loved one a balloon bouquet. Her passing was a shock to them but being that she was in a later stage in life, they knew it would happen one day. As is standard practice the staff let the family know and that they needed to come and retrieve her belongings. It was only then that a family member noticed that one of the balloons that they have given their beloved mother and friend was missing. Did someone take one of Marguerite’s balloons and her life? The answer would come but not before others would die just as mysteriously. On July 21, 1972, a man named Gerald John Schaefer picked up two teenage girls who were hitch-hiking. Schaefer told 17-year-old Pamela Wells and 18-year-old Nancy Trotter that hitchhiking was illegal in Martin County. It wasn’t, but they were young, so they believed him. On October 16, 2009, in Red Oak Oklahoma hunters come across a truck on the side of the road near the top of Panola Mountain. As they start to look around and investigate, they notice that the truck is locked but there is a dog inside. Neighbors alert the fire department that 510 Sarah St in Stroudsburg PA was on fire and Edward, Christine and four-month-old Julie Louise were inside.The first responders found 23-year-old Christine barely alive on the kitchen floor. It is April 1, 1989 and 35 year old Donald Welling was enjoying what he often did on weekend mornings which was taking a jog on the pretty back roads of Tuscarawas County. The peaceful moments of enjoying his run were shattered as a long shot rang out. The rifle bullet struck the middle of his heart killing him instantly. It was just 19 months later when on November 10, 1990, when 21 year old Jamie Paxton decided to go out and do some bow hunting with his crossbow. He found a nice area off state route 9, parked his car and got out to take a walk and get a look around. He left his weapon in the car. As Jamie was strolling along, lost in thought, he didn’t realize a man had pulled up and parked near his car. Again, shots rang out. Jamie fell to the ground after being struck three times from a rifle. On August 6, 1966, Kenneth McDuff and Roy Dale Green spent the day working for Kenneth’s dad pouring concrete. When they finished for the day they decided to go out and drive around and ‘look for a girl.’ Sadly they would come upon three teens and commit an unthinkable act. At 10 pm that night, 17-year-old Robert Brand, 16-year-old Edna Louise Sullivan who was Robert’s GF, and Robert’s 15-year-old cousin Mark Dunman just hanging out in Everman, Texas when McDuff noticed Edna Sullivan. He pulls up alongside the teens, pulls a .38 Colt revolver and ordered them to get into the trunk of their car. On July 29, 1993, law enforcement authorities were alerted to a crime scene where they found two bodies in a field near Tellico, in Ellis County, Texas. The first body discovered was that of a nude decapitated girl whose hands were also missing. It looked like she had been shot in the back as well. Her body was badly mutilated.While officers were looking around for the rest of her missing parts, they discovered another body of a boy. It looked like he had been shot but unlike the girl, his body was intact. The boy had a wallet in his pants and a library card let authorities know his name James Bryan King. The two teens were brutally murdered by a suspect who was supposed to be their friend. It is an ordinary Friday as the Dishon family prepares for the day. The kids go to school and the parents go to work but when mom Edna comes home at 1pm she is startled to see her teenage daughter’s car in the driveway. Edna looks throughout the house for her daughter Jessica and without locating her, Edna goes outside to see if her car was perhaps not working and Jessica simply got a ride to school that day. When Edna opens Jessica’s car door, a sick feeling hits her. She finds Jessica’s purse with her cell phone sticking out of it. On the floorboard on the driver’s side of the car, is one of Jessica’s shoes. When the parents contact the police to report Jessica missing,the sheriff suggests that perhaps she just took off for a bit and will be back soon. Thinking the teen was just a runaway would be the first mistake in a long, twisted case with a heartbreaking and shocking conclusion. Craig Alaska is a beautiful fishing town on the coast of Alaska located about 1000 miles south of Anchorage. The final fishing weekend has come to a close. The docks are full of the people turning in their last big catch so on September 5, 1982 when a fancy fishing boat named The Investor comes to the docks, it catches a lot of attention. It was not your ordinary working boat. It was a 58 foot fishing vessel with all the bells and whistles that would have cost over $800,000. It stood out among all the others. The following morning, people noticed the boat was not docked but floating aimlessly out at sea.
