Lorraine Kirkley lives in Valparaiso Indiana with her loving husband Robert. Lori worked as a cardiac rehab nurse and seemed to really like her job. The couple were madly in love and had just put up their house for sale and had planned to move to South Bend which is where Robert worked. It was July 21, 1999 around 9:30pm Robert came home from work. Expecting Lori to be home as she was supposed to be, he arrived to an empty home. Even though no one was in the home, it was apparent someone had been there and helped themselves to a few of the belongings. Robert walked across the street to a neighbors and asked if they had seen Lori and when they told him they had not, Robert called 9-1-1. It started with the WWF’s (now WWE) boom period in the mid-1980’s with stars like Hulk Hogan, Andre the Giant, Randy Savage, and many others. It represented the colourful culture of the 1980’s and later the edgy period of the late 1990’s with stars like Steve Austin, The Rock, The Undertaker, Triple H, and many others. Chris Benoit wanted to be just like them. He wanted to be one of the big stars and his dream came true. Chris was on top in the world of wrestling. He was winning titles with his best friends and wife by his side. It is September 24, 2015, when David Phillips who goes by the name Tray failed to show up to work. The 26-year-old worked on a boat and was a dependable employee who would always show up for work so when he didn’t call, his boss called his grandfather to see if perhaps Tray decided to take the day off or was sick. The grandfather said he would drive over to check on Tray. As the grandfather was approaching the house, he could see a police car and a man lying on the ground in front of his house on Swan Lake Drive. It was early Christmas morning 2009 in Houma, Louisiana when just after 3 am a call comes into the police. The man on the phone was the owner of a local bar called the Drama Club. He tells officers that his friend and manager of the Drama Club, Robert LeCompte, called him to let him know he was leaving for home. Naomi Oni was an extremely smart and respectful young lady. She was always taught to place more value in who she is as a person, as opposed to how she looked. She had a tight group of friends and just like a lot of teens, they were all into celebrity culture, fashion, make-up, and music. On the 29th of December 2012, Naomi set off as usual to work her shift in Stratford. After finishing at 11:30 pm, she left the store with her colleagues and as a group, they all walked to the train station where they eventually went separate ways. Today we go to Paradise where a predator stalked and murdered his victims over thirty years ago. It was the mid-late 1980’s and Hawaii was about to be struck by their first serial killer. It is May 29, 1985 when 25-year-old Vicky Gail Purdy was reported missing by her husband. Vicki had gone out with friends in Waikiki but never came home. An anonymous phone call comes into the police in October 2002. On the other end of the line is a man who states he’s been hearing rumors and the rumors were so strong, he felt he needed to call the police. The man said he had heard that a body had been dumped near Half Moon Bay. Police arrive on the scene and aren’t sure what they have found but they know it is suspicious. They work to secure the scene and call for backup. Detectives arrive and work the scene. The Caffey family are resting peacefully in their beds in the Emory Texas home when all of a sudden someone bursts through the bedroom door. Shots ring out and both Terry Caffey and his wife Penny are being riddled with bullets. Terry jumps up from his bed even though he was shot and at that time, not even aware of how many times, he rushes out to go to his children. As he is attempting to get to the boys, he heard Matthew, age 13, cry out asking ‘why are you doing this? Why are you doing this?” Shots again ring out. Terry has made it into the hall and is trapped as fire is taking over the house. With nowhere else to go, Terry rushes back into his bedroom. It is at this time, he sees his wife Penny and knows it is too late for her: she is gone. When Terry was gone from the bedroom, a sword the family had on a wall for decoration, had been removed and used on Penny, nearly decapitating her. Terry, shot many times, is now running on adrenaline and knows he needs to get out, to get help because if he dies in this house, no one will know who committed this atrocity to his family. But he knows, he knows who it is and why they did it but what he doesn’t yet know will break his heart and shock the community. Police were trying to bust a ring of thieves who were stealing yachts and then selling them. The detectives had received information that a yacht by the name of La Vita was stolen and was going to be docking nearby at Marina Bay Yacht Harbor in Richmond, just north of San Francisco. Detectives were waiting for this yacht to pull in and when it did, they wanted to have a little chat with the crew, in particular, a man by the name of Robert Denzil Kuns who they believed was involved in this. As the yacht pulled in, a man jumped out to tie up the boat. He was not Robert Kuns but another man by the name of William Leasure, an LAPD officer. Detectives were shocked to find one of their very on board but this was just the beginning of the end for Officer William Leasure in a shocking tale with a few surprises. Today we are beginning our case at the Del Mar Resort Hotel in Las Vegas and it is far from a resort. It is the kind of hotel that rents by the hour and adult movies are included in your room rental. The hotel has the usual cast of seedy characters that you expect on rotation. The Del Mar is no stranger to despair and darkness so on August 5, 1998, when a couple checks into the hotel and reports to the front desk that there is a putrid smell coming from the air conditioner, it is not out of the ordinary that someone may have died in the neighboring room. What was out of the ordinary was that the body was located inside the air conditioning vent making this not only a murder but the dead woman is at the center of what would become yet another huge scandal involving one of the richest American families ever to grace the East Coast. It is Monday, April 14 2003 when co-workers of Maria Cruz become concerned. 35-year-old Maria was always a dependable, conscious employee who would just not show up for work. A few of her employee friends decide to swing by her apartment to check on her. They arrive at her home where they are greeted by a stack of newspapers on her front door. They knock on the door and no one answers it. Clearly, Maria is not home and has been gone for longer than just a day or two but they are sure she would have told them if she were planning a trip. One of her friends contacts her uncle who lives in nearby Queens and he immediately calls the police to report her missing and file a missing person’s report on Maria. A 9-1-1 call comes in from a woman who is speaking in a muffled voice barely understandable. The operator is able to understand that someone is hurt at a hotel in the town of Fallbrook which is located in the northern part of San Diego county. After the operator calms the caller down, he is able to get an address, and police are dispatched to the location. When officers arrive and knock on the door, they can hear noises coming from inside the room but are unable to make out just what is making the noise. The manager uses his key to get officers inside. Inside they find a woman on the ground and blood everywhere. The woman barely has clothes on but there are obvious signs of injury. As officers look around the room, they notice a spiked collar near her body. In the bathroom, there is an array of knives and scalpels. They also notice a letter that informs them of yet another body. What officers are about to discover is a twisted, dark tale that seems like the plot of a bad mystery novel. Before you listen to this particular episode, I wanted to mention that the perpetrator in the case targeted sex workers many of whom were indigenous women struggling with addiction and/or mental health issues. According to www.statista.com, in 2018, the rate of homicide victims among women in Canada was more than six times higher for the indigenous population. Eddie Sexton was an ordained minister so all those in town knew him and he was the go-to guy who could marry you and fast with little fuss. We are venturing to the college town of College Station, Texas home of Texas A&M.They like simple things like studying, partying and football. They also like getting to meet new people who share similar interests, especially if that interest is Aggie Football. Kerry Kujawa is a 20-year-old engineering major at the university and just like a lot of other students, he has a 21-year-old girlfriend name, Kelly McCauley. They were just like any other college student couple: cute, carefree, and working hard to get grades and graduate while having a little fun in between. Well, it the very final episode of 2020 and day 12 of our Nightmare Before Christmas series. So far we have traveled back in time and to other countries, like the UK, Australia, and Japan. In this last episode, we are going into our own backyard. A St. Louis Post-Dispatch reporter opens an anonymous letter sent to him from someone praising him for a recent story he wrote about a murdered sex worker. However, this was not the normal fan mail as it included a map with an ‘X’ pointing to where the next dead sex worker would be found dead. Authorities go to the site in West Alton unsure of what they would find. Sadly, ‘X’ did mark the spot but this was just the beginning of a sadistic serial killer who wouldn’t stop until he made a mistake on his home computer.****edit*** A man by the name of Donald Younge Jr was charged with the murders of 3 of the women found in East St Louis in garbage bags. There names are Seriece Johnson, 33; Ramona Sidney, 31, and Tracy Williams, 38. Younge was stabbed and killed in prison before he could be tried. Day Nine and we are taking a plane flight to Zama City, Japan which is a suburb of Toyko and also home to the United States' Camp Zama Army base. The story begins with two investigators from the Metropolitan Police Department's Personal Safety-related Case Comprehensive Countermeasures Headquarters and Takao Station. This unit, which usuallt dealt with stalking, had a much different case on this day in October of 2017. A report had been made about a missing woman who was supposed to met a man she had been speaking to on Twitter and had not been seen since departing to meet him. Police approach the apartment, and, after a knock on the door, a young man answered. When asked if he knew where the missing woman may be, he replied that he did not know. An astute investigator looked beyond the man and noticed a woman’s purse in his apartment. The investigators didn’t have to pressure him for long about the whereabouts of the missing 23 year old. Minutes later he calmly pointed to a freezer and simply said, ‘in there.” What the investigators could not yet know what just how many bodies they would soon discover. On August 17, 1991, 33-year-old Wade Frankum wakes for the day. He gets dressed in casual clothes with a beanie on his head and a duffle bag in his hand. Frankum went to the train station to buy a ticket to Strathfield but gave the rail worker, whom he knew, a strange command: "you'd better go home." Frankum then walked away to catch the train to Strathmore, after all, Frankum was on a mission of murder. On August 19 in 1979 Edda Kane went for a hike in a scenic park that overlooked the San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge. Usually Edda would enjoy these hikes with a friend or two but on this particular day, no one wanted to go with her. When Edda did not return home at the time she was expected, her husband called police. Worried that perhaps she fell and hurt herself, the police put together a search team but sadly, they could not locate her. Her body was found the next day, she had been murdered. On December 10 1973, a young man lured two underage hitchhikers into his car and drove them to the outskirts of town. What the man didn’t know is that he picked the wrong two girls to attack that fall evening. The victims fought viciously with the man. Frustrated, the man took out his gun and fired. You know the old you live by the gun, you die by the gun. This tale has all the makings of a 1930’s film noir gangster movie however these men were not very gangster at all--in fact, they would have to return their membership card if they had one. One is goofier than the next. One of my favorites sayings is “You can’t make this s*it up” and boy does this apply to this story. The scene opens with a motley crew of rough looking fellas talking over whiskeys and trying to come up with a way to make some fast, easy cash. The date is July 1932 and prohibition was still going strong. The setting is in the Bronx as friends, 27-year-old Anthony ‘Tony’ Marino, a speakeasy proprietor, 28-year-old Joseph "Red" Murphy, a former chemist and current bartender at Marino’s speakeasy, 24-year-old Francis Pasqua, an undertaker who owned a local funeral home, and 29-year-old Daniel Kriesberg, who was a grocer and father of three. The final player is a cab driver named Hersey or Harry Green. The scene opens as these gentlemen are sitting around in Marino’s speakeasy trying to come up with a no-fail plan to make some fast money. One word: insurance. So begins the tale of Mike Malloy, the man who wouldn’t die. 19-year-old Sonya Ivanoff was a standout in her small community of Nome Alaska. Sonja, who moved to Nome about two years prior, had made a name for herself on the basketball court in high school so almost everyone knew Sonya. On the evening of August 10, 2003, Sonja and her friend went out to have some fun. It was near midnight when the friends separated to do other things. When the roommate woke up the next morning and Sonja was not at home, worry set in. Police launch an investigation but with only a 7 person police team, specialists had to be flown in.
