242. The Gig's Up: Rori Hache & Kandis Fitzpatrick

SURPRISE!We have one last episode for 2023!Thank you to Tina for requesting this episode. She's been a listener since pretty much the beginning of OTCP.On the evening of September 11th, 2017, a fisherman spotted an unusual object floating along the surface of Lake Ontario near Oshawa Pier. After several attempts to bring the object closer with his fishing line, he realized he had made a grim discovery - the dismembered torso of a woman. There were no signs of identification, such as age indicators, scars, or tattoos, so Durham Police began scouring their missing people database for clues. It would take two months for police to identify the torso as 18-year-old Rori Hache, who had been reported missing a few days prior to being found. Despite their efforts to find the killer, the investigators could not find any significant leads that would give them the answers they were looking for. On December 29th, 2017, the police received a call a huge break. A plumber had dialed 911 to report a suspicious substance found in a drain at a property he was working at. He had gone to the property following complaints from neighbors that their plumbing was backing up into their sinks and bathtubs and was causing an unpleasant smell throughout their apartments.Durham Regional Police arrived on the scene a short while later and knocked on the home's basement apartment. When 45-year-old Adam Strong answered the door, he calmly said, "The gig's up..."Join Cam and Jen as they discuss the horrifying case "The Gig's Up: Rori Hache & Kandis Fitzpatrick"Thank you to our team:Written and researched by Fern Bushnall @eoacrimeListener Discretion by Edward October from OctoberpodVHS https://www.youtube.com/c/octoberpodhomevideoExecutive Producer Nico Vitesse of https://theinkypawprint.comSources:https://globalnews.ca/news/3736628/woman-torso-lake-ontario/ https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/toronto/autopsy-on-torso-found-in-oshawa-harbour-inconclusive-police-say-1.4288354https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/toronto/oshawa-harbour-torso-1.4285247 https://www.durhamregion.com/news/concern-growing-for-oshawa-teen-who-simply-vanished-in-august/article_5ebe0d37-de93-505e-86c6-c7b1de4d110c.html https://torontosun.com/news/local-news/oshawa-murder-victim-rori-hache-was-pregnant-and-determined-to-keep-the-babyhttps://www.ctvnews.ca/canada/she-did-not-deserve-to-die-family-remembers-teenage-girl-whose-torso-found-in-lake-ontario-1.3673593?cache=yesclipId10406200text%2Fhtml%3Bcharset%3Dutf-80404%2F7.314145%2F7.314145 https://www.thestar.com/news/gta/mother-of-murdered-teen-rori-hache-believes-her-daughter-was-hunted/article_a04d0075-585d-5f13-8e73-b9cf44ea13f4.htmlhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QHfRhKzmaWc https://nationalpost.com/news/canada/body-parts-found-with-undetonated-explosive-matched-to-torso-found-in-septemberhttps://www.durhamregion.com/news/torso-found-in-oshawa-harbour-is-that-of-rori-hache-teen-missing-since-august-durham/article_5b8bbc37-bb39-5e63-801f-c9ce5dfc7caa.html https://nationalpost.com/news/canada/body-parts-found-with-undetonated-explosive-matched-to-torso-found-in-septemberhttps://nationalpost.com/news/canada/body-parts-found-with-undetonated-explosive-matched-to-torso-found-in-september https://torontosun.com/news/local-news/sun-exclusive-ex-of-hache-suspect-says-he-needs-to-choke-women-to-orgasmhttps://torontosun.com/news/local-news/rori-hache-dismemberment-suspect-controlling-and-abusivehttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q6k8lr_Efjc https://www.durhamregion.com/news/crime/police-discover-dna-of-second-woman-kandis-fitzpatrick-while-searching-home-of-adam-strong/article_deaf5e2f-f5ad-5d46-8ff6-d8112eb074ed.html Learn more about your ad choices. Little White Corvette: Robert Lee Yates Jr Day 12:12 Nightmares Before Christmas

Welcome to Our True Crime Podcast’s original “12 Nightmares Before Christmas,” where we discuss a true crime story daily for the days leading up to December 24. Make sure to like, subscribe, and tune in each day.We made it to Day 12! We hope you've had a wonderful holiday season! Thank you all for such a great 2023! Most people have heard of the Green River Killer. Washington State’s most notorious serial killer was hard to miss in the 1990s. His moniker and his horrendous deeds could be found in most major newspapers across America. But there was another serial killer preying on society’s weak and vulnerable at about the same time in the exact same state. While Gary Ridgeway was killing women and dumping them on the western side of Washington, Robert Lee Yates Jr was doing the same thing just four hours to the east on the other side of the state. In fact, at one point, investigators thought that the Green River Killer had just moved his hunting ground. But after a few bodies showed up in Spokane with gunshot wounds and plastic grocery bags wrapped around their heads, they realized that the MO was totally different. With a growing sense of dread, investigators realized that the sex workers and runaways of Spokane were not the victims of the Green River Killer. They were the victims of an entirely different monster. The Torture Dungeon of Charles Ng and Leonard Lake: Day 11: 12 Nightmares Before Christmas

Welcome to Our True Crime Podcast’s original “12 Nightmares Before Christmas,” where we discuss a true crime story daily for the days leading up to December 24. Make sure to like, subscribe, and tune in each day.On June 2, 1985, the Southern San Francisco police department received a report of a shoplifting incident. A man calmly exited a store with a tool called a vice, placed it in the trunk of a beige 1980 Honda Prelude, and vanished before apprehension could occur. Officer Daniel Wright reported to the South City Lumberyard. Inside the car was a man who presented a driver's license identifying him as Robin Stapley. One issue: the license photo did not match the man sitting in front of them. License plates on the vehicle indicated that it was registered to an individual named Lonnie Bond, and the car was listed as a Buick. Growing suspicious, officers got into the trunk and discovered the vice that had been reported as stolen. Also inside the trunk is a .22-caliber revolver fitted with a silencer. The unknown man was taken into the station, where he adamantly denied any involvement in any wrongdoing. What would unfold in the next several days is unthinkable.Join Jen and Cam of Our True Crime Podcast as we discuss The Torture Dungeon of Charles Ng and Leonard Lake: Day 11 of The 12 Nightmares Before Christmas.Listener Discretion by @octoberpodVHSMusic by our EP Nico @theinkypawprintSources:http://articles.latimes.com/1999/jan/08/news/mn-61708https://news.google.com/newspapers?nid=2199&dat=19850616&id=2tsxAAAAIBAJ&pg=6662,3773323&hl=enhttp://www.biography.com/people/charles-ng-11735781#synopsishttp://articles.latimes.com/1999/apr/12/news/mn-26600https://news.google.com/newspapers?nid=2199&dat=19850616&id=2tsxAAAAIBAJ&pg=6662,3773323&hl=enhttp://www.ocregister.com/articles/county-289813-convicted-murders.htmlhttp://articles.latimes.com/1999/apr/21/local/me-29591https://web.archive.org/web/20110308053131/http://www.francesfarmersrevenge.com/stuff/serialkillers/miranda.htm Learn more about your ad choices. Michael Toler and Chrissy's three-year-old were clinging to life. Michael would later die at the hospital.Guy Heinze Jr was arrested for the murders and found guilty in a court of law. They spent a significant part of the day running through the forest, eventually reaching a location known as the "Executioners Drop" due to its steep descent into a deep gorge. However, as they neared this spot, a foul odor began to fill the air. The closer they came to the area, the more intense the stench. Upon reaching their destination, they noticed an unusual mound on the ground, with what appeared to be strands of human hair protruding from it. Upon closer examination, they also observed a shoe fragment emerging from the mound. Sadly, the discovery of this body would be the first of many to come. Thinking it was just something he ate, Stuart fidgeted but wanted to stay for the revival. As the service went on, he began to feel worse and worse. He also didn’t want to disappoint his girlfriend, 45-year-old Velma Barfield, by leaving, so he decided to go out to the truck to lie down for a while. When the revival ended, Velma returned to the truck and drove them home. She had to stop the vehicle at least once for Stuart to throw up on the side of the road. Assuming he had one of the many strains of influenza, Stuart asked a friend to care for his pigs “just until I get over this flu.” Stuart never got over the flu. Broken: Leslie Allen Williams Day 4: 12 Nightmares Before Christmas

Welcome to Our True Crime Podcast’s original “12 Nightmares Before Christmas,” where we discuss a true crime story daily for the days leading up to December 24. Make sure to like, subscribe, and tune in each day. It's Day 4!On a cold and cloudy May of 1992, a middle-aged man and his mother visited the Hillview Memorial Cemetery in the Springfield township of Oakland County, Michigan. They were there to leave flowers for his father, who had passed away two years before. The man noticed something odd as he approached his father’s grave. There was a car parked haphazardly on the drive, with the door standing wide open. The man honked his horn, but when he got no response to that, he became worried. He got out of the car to investigate, and that’s when he saw a tattooed, muscular man with a mustache dragging a woman into the bushes along the tree line. The mustached man had his hand over the woman’s mouth, and she looked frightened. “Sir, will you go away?” the muscular tattooed man yelled. The older man’s blood ran cold as he realized that what was going on wasn't consensual. As casually as he could, he placed the flowers on his father’s grave, turned, took down the car's license plate number, and then drove away. Soon, he happened upon a patrol officer who was at the scene of an accident just a quarter of a mile from the entrance to the cemetery. He told the officer he’d just seen a man try to abduct a woman from Hillview Memorial. Oakland County Deputy Gary Alexander hopped in his car and headed straight for the graveyard. As the officer got closer, he saw the car speeding down the road, and he then engaged in a high-speed chase. As he was cuffing the man, he heard a sound. He stopped, glanced around, and realized the noise was coming from the car's trunk. After securing the suspect, the officer managed to open the trunk, and there he found a woman bound with a plastic zip-tie around her neck. Alexander also found a handgun, a knife, and a bag of zip ties in the car. The deputy pulled the driver’s license from the man’s wallet, which read: Leslie Allen Williams. The campus bustled with activity, featuring a mix of young students envisioning their future and more mature individuals returning to complete degrees they had embarked on years earlier. On that morning at UAH, Instructor Amy Bishop conducted her science classes, and her students later described the course as uneventful and routine. Meanwhile, a meeting for the biology department was slated for Room 369 in the Shelby Center for Science and Technology, which housed both the Biology and Mathematics departments. Amy Bishop joined her colleagues at the meeting, and for approximately 40 minutes, she sat silently among them. What would happen next would shock the academic community, leaving three families grieving and many asking why.Join Cam and Jen of Our True Crime Podcast to discuss A Fine Line Between Genius and Insanity: Amy Bishop: Day 3: The 12 Nightmares Before Christmas.Listener Discretion by @octoberpodVHSMusic by our EP Nico @theinkypawprintSources:https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2013/02/11/a-loaded-gunhttps://www.nytimes.com/2010/02/21/us/21bishop.htmlhttps://www.al.com/news/2022/08/amy-bishops-son-seth-anderson-died-in-unintentional-shooting-huntsville-teen-indicted.htmlhttps://www.al.com/topic/Amy%20Bishop/index.htmlhttps://sports.yahoo.com/amy-bishops-son-seth-bishop-200037215.htmlhttps://criminal-justice.iresearchnet.com/types-of-crime/school-violence/amy-bishop/https://abcnews.go.com/GMA/amy-bishop-husband-alleged-university-alabama-shooter-loving-mother-wife/story?id=9883895https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3280081/Former-Alabama-professor-shot-6-3-fatally-apologizes.htmlhttps://www.npr.org/sections/thetwo-way/2010/02/amy_bishop_alleged_uah_shooter.html Learn more about your ad choices. Make sure to like, subscribe, and tune in each day.Welcome to day 2 of The 12 Nightmares Before ChristmasFifty-five-year-old Margarette Eby lived a rich and full life as a music professor at the University of Michigan. Margarette was well-liked by her students and coworkers and had several grown children of her own. Around 4:30 in the afternoon on November 9th, 1986, some of Margarette’s students arrived at the cottage to take her to a concert. When the students knocked on the door, they were met with silence. Finally, one of them tried the doorknob, and it was unlocked. They entered the cottage and found a grisly scene.Margarette Eby was Flint, Michigan’s 56th homicide that year.Five years later, in hotel room 354 in Romulus, Michigan, the wake-up calls from the front desk went unanswered. A 41-year-old flight attendant, Nancy Jean Ludwig Lud wig, from Minnetonka, Minnesota, had checked into room 354 around 9 P.M. the night before. Nancy had been a flight attendant for Northwest Airlines since 1976 and enjoyed her job quite a bit. It was about 12:50 in the afternoon when the housekeeper opened the door to a pitch-black room. The housekeeper walked over to the window and, upon opening the curtains, turned and discovered Nancy Jean Ludwig. She had been stabbed to death. Both cases went cold until 2002 when new technology helped investigators find their killer, Jeffrey Wayne Gorton.Join Cam and Jen as they discuss "Room 354: Jeffrey Gorton"Thank you to our team:Written and researched by Lauretta AllenListener Discretion by Edward October from https://www.youtube.com/c/octoberpodhomevideoExecutive Producer Nico Vitesse of https://theinkypawprint.comSources:https://mdocweb.state.mi.us/otis2/otis2profile.aspx?mdocNumber=428571https://murderpedia.org/male.G/g/gorton-jeffrey.htmhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jeffrey_Gortonhttps://www.amazon.com/gp/video/detail/B017VDEE7I/ref=atv_dp_season_select_s2 (S2E8 of Your Worst Nightmare on ID “Fight or Flight”)https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UTRvWZIpw-I It is also featured on the Forensics Files episode "Silk Stalkings." With Friends Like These: Adrianne Reynolds Day 1: 12 Nightmares Before Christmas

Welcome to Our True Crime Podcast’s original “12 Nightmares Before Christmas,” where we discuss a true crime story daily for the days leading up to December 24. Make sure to like, subscribe, and tune in each day.High school is brutal. To quote my dear friend Dexter from season 6, “High school, a small world unto itself, combining all the elements of a federal work camp with those of a third-world poultry farm.” Adrianne Reynolds, a 16-year-old, had recently arrived in town in November. Originally, Adrianne had been residing in Kilgore, Texas, with her mother. However, due to difficulties in school, her parents decided to send her to live with her stepfather, hoping that a change of environment would provide her with a fresh beginning. Consequently, Adrianne relocated to East Moline, Illinois, where her father and stepmother eagerly welcomed her. It was in East Moline that Adrianne crossed paths with Sarah and Corey. Like most teenagers, all Adrianne wanted was to fit in, and she was an outgoing and talkative girl who loved to sing. Her biggest dream was to be a contestant on American Idol. Adrianne would never get the chance to audition for the popular television show. Adrianne would never get a chance to do anything ever again.Join Jen and Cam from Our True Crime Podcast as we discuss ‘With Friends Like These: Adrianne Reynolds Day 1: The 12 Nightmares Before Christmas.’Listener Discretion by @octoberpodVHSMusic by our EP Nico @theinkypawprintSources:https://www.nbcnews.com/id/wbna15333880https://web.archive.org/web/20150722111604/http://www.people.com/people/archive/article/0,,20146836,00.htmlhttps://www.themidwestcrimefiles.com/post/unthinkable-the-murder-of-adrianne-reynoldshttp://www.nbcnews.com/id/15333880https://web.archive.org/web/20150722111604/http://www.people.com/people/archive/article/0,,20146836,00.htmlhttps://qctimes.com/news/local/article_491d3fbc-0643-11df-a00e-001cc4c03286.htmlhttps://qconline.com/archives/qco/display.php?id=296357https://qctimes.com/news/local/accomplice-in-east-moline-teen-s-killing-dies-in-fiery/article_2d85584c-8996-11e1-a999-0019bb2963f4.htmlhttps://web.archive.org/web/20120324123837/http://www.extremeskins.com/showthread.php?90249-Illinois-teen-killed-and-dismembered-classmates-under-arresthttps://www.kwqc.com/2022/03/09/cory-gregory-gets-same-sentence-2005-killing-adrienne-reynolds/?outputType=amp Learn more about your ad choices. 241. Burning Anger: Stanley Ford

We are heading to Akron, Ohio, specifically to the Sherbondy Hill neighborhood, where families are actively engaged in their lives and the upbringing of their children. This well-established neighborhood is home to a diverse group of middle-class families, ranging from elderly residents to brand-new parents. The quiet area was shocked when, on April 18, 2016, a deadly house fire killed two of the neighborhood's own citizens. Friends wonder how this could happen to such sweet and loving people. The fire was determined to be arson, but investigators could not determine who set the house on fire; the case went cold. Then the unthinkable happened. On Mother’s Day 2017, the arsonist struck again, but this time, the blaze would end up being the deadliest house fire in the city's history.Join Jen and Cam of Our True Crime Podcast as we discuss ‘Burning Anger: Stanley Ford.’Promo by our bestie Edward OctoberpodVHS introducing his new Holiday series. @octoberpodVHSEdward also does our listener discretion!! 240. Picture Perfect: Karla Brown

It was the summer of 1978 in America. The minimum wage was 2.65 an hour, the Bee Gees ruled the pop music airwaves, and Star Wars enjoyed a rerelease in select theaters nationwide. On the east side of the Mississippi River, just thirty minutes from St. Louis was the small residential town of Wood River, Illinois, where summer activities like fishing, swimming, and backyard barbecues were in full swing. Most of the residents of Wood River had lived in the town their whole lives and considered it the best of both worlds.Karla Lou Brown, aged 22, felt the same way. When she and Mark, her boyfriend of five years, decided to move in together, there was no place that they’d rather live. They bought a home right in the center of Wood River.Karla adored her boyfriend Mark, who was a few years older, but so far, he had been reluctant to make a long-term commitment regarding their relationship. When Mark finally suggested they buy a house together, she immediately said yes. 239. From Cop to Killer: The Murder of Sherri Rasmussen

In the summer of 1984, John Ruetten met Sherri Rasmussen, and the two immediately hit it off. Their deep bond led to their marriage in November 1985, and they were thrilled to start life as a couple. On February 24, John left for his job at an engineering company, allowing Sherri to sleep in a little longer. Typically, Sherri would have already left for work by this time, but that particular day brought a change in routine. Sherri had contemplated calling in sick because she was slated to attend a seminar and didn’t really want to deal with that. John's workday began with his arrival just before 8 a.m. A few hours into his day, he attempted to reach Sherri to check if she had gone to work. He continued trying to get her throughout the day but to no avail. Upon returning home, he noticed that the garage door was unexpectedly open, a departure from the norm, and Sherri's car was gone. As he ventured into the garage, he observed broken glass on the ground. A horrifying scene awaited John inside the residence. 29-year-old Sherri lay on the floor, her face bearing the brutal signs of violence—bloodied, with a swollen and bruised right eyelid, a vacant gaze from her open left eye, and her mouth in its final, silent gasp. In desperation, John reached out to touch her, hoping for a sign of life, but her skin was chillingly cold. At that moment, he knew that Sherri was no longer with them. 236. The Short Family Murders

In August 2002, Michael Short, his wife, Mary, and their daughter, Jennifer, lived in a red brick ranch-style home right off Hwy 220 in Oak Level, Virginia. Michael owned a business named M.S. Mobile Home Movers, employing various people, most of whom were temporary or transient. The company was not doing well, so Michael decided to put their house up for sale and move into a mobile home until he could figure out his next move. He had even made a trip to the coast of North Carolina to see if he could find work there. On the evening of Wednesday, August 14, 2002, the family's plans were up in the air. They may or may not sell the business, and they may or may not move to North Carolina. On that night, they had every reason to believe that whatever came their way, they'd do it together as a family.Unfortunately, Michael and Mary would be found shot execution-style the following day, and 9-year-old Jennifer was nowhere to be found. After an exhaustive search, Jennifer's remains were found 41 days after her parents were found murdered. Now, 21 years later, police are no closer to finding their killer. 235. Sleep My Babies: Sandi Nieves

On July 1, 1998, at nearly 1 p.m., a call came into the 911 emergency call center to report a fire at her home on Cherry Creek Drive in Saugus, California. The woman caller had a dry, matter-of-fact tone “The house is all smoke.” The dispatcher asked if the house was still smoking and the woman said “No, not now, it’s over.” She then went on to say “We had a fire last night. I woke up and everything was black.” The dispatcher in a bit of confusion confirms what she heard. “You had a fire last night?”Caller: “Uh-huh”Dispatcher: “And you just woke up?”Caller: “Yes”Dispatcher: “You were sleeping the whole time during the fire?”Caller: “Yeah, I assume”When responders arrived, they found that the fire had already been extinguished for some time. Sandi Nieves, who called first responders, was covered in soot and was waiting in the living room on the couch along with her 14-year-old son, David who also had soot on him. Both of them were eating cookies and acting bizarrely. David was zoning out watching TV. Sandi told the paramedics that everything was fine and they didn’t need to be there. 234. The Fatal Exorcism of Joan Vollmer

On February 1st, 1993, a minister was summoned to a house off Dimboola Road in the outback town of Antwerp, Australia. When he arrived, he was greeted by a man named David Klingner, who said, “It’s a long story,” as he led the pastor into the house. Inside, the minister was overcome by a foul stench. Blowflies were buzzing around the house, attracted to the putrid smell of decay. The minister was pretty confident that whoever they had called him for was beyond saving. He made his way past a group of people who were calmly eating their lunch at the kitchen table into a bedroom where the swollen remains of 49-year-old Joan Vollmer lay fully dressed on a mattress. The minister immediately phoned the police, and a constable was sent to the house. When Constable Michael Arnott arrived, he spoke to the dead woman’s husband, 54-year-old pig farmer Ralph Vollmer. After just a few moments, the constable understood the situation as thus: Ralph’s wife had been possessed by ten different demons, and she had died as a result of her “deliverance,” otherwise known as an exorcism.Join Jen and Cam as they discuss “The Fatal Exorcism of Joan Vollmer.”Promo by our friend Edward October from Octoberpod AM.Be sure to catch his newest spooky tale, “The Spirit Doll: A Halloween Fantasia,” on October 24!Written and researched by Lauretta AllenListener Discretion by Edward October from OctoberpodVHSExecutive Producer Nico Vitesse of The Inky Paw PrintSources:https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/211590852/joan-vollmerhttps://www.nzherald.co.nz/world/the-creepy-australian-country-house-abandoned-after-joan-vollmers-terrifying-death-when-an-exorcist-tried-to-rid-her-of-demons/QSK4KYGCVHVSUMXGBUDKS7C4VA/https://www.heraldsun.com.au/news/national/the-victorian-woman-who-died-after-a-fourday-exorcism/news-story/884b0b37067ce3bfad090c45c29283cchttps://casefilepodcast.com/case-128-joan-vollmer/https://forgottenillawarra.wordpress.com/2014/08/21/a-terrible-exorcism/https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/127247897https://www.newspapers.com/image/120622909/?terms=Joan%20Vollmer%20exorcism&match=1https://www.newspapers.com/image/120621692/?terms=Joan%20Vollmer%20exorcism&match=1https://www.newspapers.com/image/120464050/?terms=Joan%20Vollmer%20exorcism&match=1 Learn more about your ad choices. 233. Visions: The Murder of Tracey Schoettlin

Today, we are en route to Birmingham, Alabama, where we'll meet Tracey Schoettlin, a 26-year-old with big aspirations. In the summer of 1986, Tracey worked as a waitress at the Southpoint American Cafe while diligently preparing for the LSAT, the crucial exam for law school admission. She took the LSAT multiple times until she achieved the necessary score for acceptance into Samford Law School. Her ultimate aim was to become a lawyer and serve an underserved community. Tracey's determination and ambition indicated that she was well on her way to realizing her dreams. On the fateful evening of July 13, 1986, Tracey left the restaurant around 11 p.m. intending to head home. Tragically, she never reached her destination. As the investigation unfolded, the circumstances surrounding her murder were deeply disturbing and nearly unbelievable. This homicide case would ultimately evolve into one of the most extensive criminal investigations in Jefferson County. The perplexing question remained: What could have motivated someone to inflict harm upon this young woman?Join Jen and Cam of Our True Crime Podcast on this episode entitled ‘Visions: The Murder of Tracey Schoettlin.’Listener Discretion by the oh-so-talented @octoberpodVHS All Music by our EP Nico @theinkypawprint (formally known as @wetalkofdreams) Promos from our friends at Angels’ Voices Silenced No More angelsvoicesnm.org and @Twisted_PodSources: https://law.justia.com/cases/alabama/court-of-appeals-criminal/1990/577-so-2d-541-0.htmlhttps://www.imdb.com/title/tt7846082/https://www.facebook.com/WBRCnews/videos/who-is-tommy-bradley/589135551060/https://case-law.vlex.com/vid/bradley-v-state-6-890015804https://www.facebook.com/WBRCnews/videos/25-years-later-the-tracey-schoettlin-murder/2640830944248/https://www.al.com/opinion/2013/03/alabama_justice_system_your_vi.htmlhttps://www.newspapers.com/image/795110929/?terms=Tracey%20Schoettlin%20murder&match=1https://www.newspapers.com/image/795110929/?terms=Tracey%20Schoettlin%20murder&match=1https://www.newspapers.com/image/795087157/?terms=Tracey%20Schoettlin%20murder&match=1https://www.wbrc.com/story/16043204/25-years-later-the-tracey-schoettlin-case/ Learn more about your ad choices. 232. Napa Valley Nightmare: Adriane Insogna & Leslie Mazzara

Pumpkin spice season is often people's favorite time of the year. Relief from scorching summer temperatures arrives, and with it, a glorious orange, gold, and red blanket splays across the countryside. And in October of 2004, California's Napa Valley, home of America's wine country, was amping to be a spectacular autumn. In one of Napa's cozy neighborhoods on Dorset Street, a house was decorated for Halloween like many others. In that house lived three women, friends who decided it was wiser to pool their resources and live together than separately. And even though Napa had a low crime rate—two years since there had been a serious crime—there was safety in numbers. Or so they thought. On November 1st, 2004, at about 2:00 in the morning, Lauren was awakened by the security light flipping on behind the garage. She didn't overthink it because sometimes the cats would often get out. But then she heard her dog give a "warning bark." Lauren quieted her dog, but within minutes, she heard someone entering the house and going up the stairs. Thinking it may be one of her roommate's boyfriends, she quieted the dog again and dozed off. Then she heard a blood-curdling scream.Join Jen and Cam as they discuss "Napa Valley Nightmare: Adriane Insogna & Leslie Mazzara'.Thank you to Bingo Bash for sponsoring this episode. 231. New York City Zodiac: Eddie Seda

On May 31, 1990, in New York City, a call came into the police about a 78-year-old man named Joseph "Joe" Proce, who was shot in the back outside his home by a stranger New York City has seen its share of homicides. In fact, Newsweek magazine said that 1990 was one of the worst years for homicides in the city. This shooting was different because the shooter left a note. A circle at the top of the letter is divided into sections with symbols inside each piece. It was later determined these symbols were the zodiac signs of Gemini, Scorpio, and Taurus. Below the circle is written the statement, “This is the Zodiac. The 12 sign will die when the belts in the heaven are seen.” At the end of the letter, there is yet another symbol, one that is familiar to many: a circle with a cross in it, as in gun sights. Next to the symbol is the name ‘Faust.’ Today, we will discuss the Zodiac Killer but not that Zodiac Killer. This is the New York City Zodiac, and people are wondering if the original has returned to finish what he started all those years ago. 229. A Mother's Intuition: Ashley Wilson

We are headed to the great state of Texas, Houston, to be exact. Renee and her 19-year-old daughter Ashley Wilson are very close, talking often, usually every day. There was no answer when Renee tried to reach out on the phone to have their usual chat. Usually, this may scare Renee, but she thought she knew why. Ashley had called her mom a few days earlier to tell her she had some news, and that news came with lots of crying in about nine months. Renee thought Ashley was upset with her as her, as Renee told Ashley there would have to be some changes in her life with a baby coming. One of those changes included moving back home. Ashley, who had just moved out, had been in a terrible car accident with severe injuries. Ashley took a long time to heal and was proud of her new independence. On January 19, 2004, a call came into the Fort Bend County Sheriff’s office. Renee is shocked to find her sweet daughter dead inside her apartment. Around her neck is the cord she wore around her neck at her high school graduation and a pillow over her head. Ashley had hanged herself, but Renee did not believe this to be the case. Perhaps Renee was wrong, or maybe it was a mother’s intuition. Today, we are going to a small town in Iowa called Macedonia. The city is located just outside of Omaha, Nebraska, and boasts a population of around 250 residents. It is the kind of town in America where everyone knows each other, and you can’t get away with much because you are either related to them or someone you know is related to them. When a 37-year-old single mom named Cari Farver disappeared in 2012, it was all hands on deck. It would take many people to get some answers for those who loved Cari, and when the answers came, the truth about what happened was nothing less than a horror movie. If this story were not true, you would find it difficult to believe.Join Jen and Cam on this episode of Our True Crime Podcast entitled ‘I Will Not Be Ignored: Cari Farver.’Listener Discretion by Edward October @octoberpodVHSMusic by our E.P. 224. Preconceived Notions: Patricia Stallings

David and Patricia Stallings married in August of 1988, and with the belief that they were about to embark on their part of the American Dream, the couple bought a small white farmhouse on Lake Wauwanoka in Hillsboro, MissouriTwenty-four-year-old Patricia gave birth to the couple’s first child, Ryan Stallings, in April of 1989. Even though Ryan suffered from gastronomic distress since birth, the couple were overwhelmingly happy in their new roles as parents. But on July 9th, 1989, that would all change as Ryan became horribly ill with nonstop vomiting and labored breathing. Patricia drove full speed up Highway 21 toward St. Louis with her sick baby cradled in his car seat. In a panic, Patricia got lost and ended up at Cardinal Glennon Children's Hospital instead of going to St. Louis Children’s Hospital, as she intended.Once there, Ryan was immediately ushered into the ICU, put on a ventilator, and had numerous tubes and IVs going into his tiny body. Patricia was overwhelmed when the doctors couldn’t seem to diagnose what was wrong with him. They slammed her with a barrage of questions and then ran a complete blood and urine analysis. The staff would not allow her or David to be alone in the room with Ryan. Anytime David and Patricia were in Ryan’s room, there had to be medical staff present.Three days later, Patricia was arrested on assault charges for poisoning Ryan.Join Jen and Cam as we talk about "Preconceived Notions: "Patricia Stallings"Written and researched by Lauretta AllenListener Discretion by Edward October from OctoberpodVHSExecutive Producer Nico Vitesse of The Inky Paw PrintSources:https://www.newspapers.com/image/139943203/?terms=Patricia%20Stallings&match=1https://www.newspapers.com/image/819970269/?terms=Patricia%20Stallings&match=1https://www.newspapers.com/image/207793816/?terms=Patricia%20Stallings&match=1https://www.newspapers.com/image/139942291/https://www.newspapers.com/image/139942651/?terms=Patricia%20Stallings&match=1https://www.newspapers.com/image/139958402/?terms=Patricia%20Stallings&match=1https://www.newspapers.com/image/141238228/?terms=Patricia%20Stallings&match=1 https://www.newspapers.com/image/141439318/https://www.newspapers.com/image/141439346/?terms=Patricia%20Stallings&match=1https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Patricia_Stallings Learn more about your ad choices. 223. Death in Davie: Donna Decker

Today we are heading south to a town called Davie, just outside of Florida’s Gold Coast. It is a small town where not a lot happens, and that is precisely how the townfolk like it. A massacre in this sleepy town would disrupt the calm community, leaving them in fear. It would take a long time to finally get justice, but how the case unfolds is genuinely one of the most bizarre.Join Jen and Cam on this episode of ‘Our True Crime Podcast’ entitled 'Death in Davie: Donna Decker.'Promo by our friends Whitney and Melissa over at @NavAdvocacyPod. 222. Together Forever: Barbara and Patricia Grimes

Life in America in the 1950s often conjures up images of an idyllic suburban life. Fueled by unprecedented economic growth after the lean and stressful years of World War II, Americans enjoyed the stability and prosperity that they craved. The innocent and wholesome portrayal of the nuclear family was often depicted in programs like Father Knows Best and Leave it to Beaver as one where every problem could be solved with a good ol’ heart-to-heart talk and a slice of apple pie. But look closer, and there are cracks in that façade. The polio epidemic terrified families of the early 1950s, the Cold War raged, and there was little room for divergent views in what had become a homogeneous society. And crime? It existed, even if television shows tried to pretend that it didn’t. Elvis Presley rocked America socially and literally with his huge hit Heartbreak Hotel in January 1956. Less than a year later, Presley would have a legion of fans and a new movie called Love Me Tender. And it was on a freezing cold night in December of 1956 when two teenage sisters, Barbara and Patricia Grimes, disappeared off South Archer Avenue in Chicago after having seen Love Me Tender for the twelfth time at the Brighton Park Theatre. Their disappearance and subsequent story would be hailed as the crime that stole Chicago’s innocence. It just shone a light on the less than Leave-it-to-Beaver reality. This case is still open, so if anyone has any information regarding the Grimes sisters case, the Cook County Sheriff’s dept has a page where you can submit information. Link below.https://www.cookcountysheriff.org/case/819/Theresa Grimes is the only sibling left of Barbara and Patricia, and she is in her 80s. Warning: This episode is graphic. Listener discretion is advised. It is a rite of passage for many American college students, and that is Spring Break. It’s a time when students can cut loose, drink too much, and make plenty of bad decisions. Whether Palm Springs or Palm Beach, kids flock to the surf, sun, and sand to have a week full of fun. As parents, we know our children are getting older, and we would probably prefer them not to go, but we have to trust them and know they will be ok but…what if the darkness that lurks out there is more evil than we could ever comprehend and it is just waiting for the right moment to strike. On Wednesday, March 15, 1989, in Brownsville, Texas, two young men came into the station to talk to Chief Investigator George Gavito. The two men tell the investigator their good friend is missing as they explain that they are visiting South Padre Island for spring break. 220. There Were Six: The Staudte Family Murders

Springfield, Missouri, is an unassuming town of historical significance. Located in the southwest portion of the state, Springfield is home to about 170,000 people. And although the city is no stranger to violent crime, as many might remember the now world-famous 1992 disappearance of the Springfield Three, it's mostly a quiet place to live. Mark and Diane Staudte resided in Springfield with their four children. Mark played the guitar and sang lead for a local band, and Diane was a nurse and the family's primary money maker. On Easter Sunday, April 8th, the paramedics and police were called to the Staudte home to find Mark unresponsive and without a pulse. Initial examination by the paramedics concluded that Mark had been dead for several hours. Nothing seemed unusual except a ring of blood around his mouth. The coroner ruled Mark died by natural causes.Mark and Diane's 26-year-old son Shaun would be found dead five months later. It would take the second oldest child, Sarah, to be admitted to the hospital in critical condition before an anonymous caller would ask the police to investigate. They feared the members of the Staudte family were being murdered one by one.Join Cam and Jen as they discuss 'There Were Six: The Staudte Family Murders'Research and writing by Lauretta Allen Listener Discretion by OctoberpodVHS & OctoberpodAMProducer Music & Editing by Nico at We Talk of DreamsSources:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Staudte_Family_Murdershttps://www.ozarksfirst.com/crimetraveler/crime-traveler-the-chilling-murders-of-the-staudte-family/https://www.newspapers.com/image/149506784/?terms=Diane%20Staudte&match=1https://www.newspapers.com/image/176114263/?terms=Diane%20Staudte&match=1https://www.newspapers.com/image/118485077/?terms=Diane%20Staudte&match=1https://www.newspapers.com/image/126626823/?terms=Diane%20Staudte&match=1https://www.newspapers.com/image/213404200/?terms=Rachel%20Staudte&match=1https://www.newspapers.com/image/159818284/?terms=Rachel%20Staudte&match=1https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/189253566/mark-alan-staudtehttps://www.newspapers.com/image/176114263/?terms=Diane%20Staudte&match=1https://www.mirror.co.uk/news/world-news/chilling-story-church-going-mum-7772251 Learn more about your ad choices. 217. Web of Lies: Cherrylle Dell

It is March 17, 1997, and the day is winding down for Killaloe Ontario police superintendent Ken Leppert. As he leaves the Ontario Provincial Police dept, he is greeted by 39-year-old Nancy Filmore. The visibly upset woman demands to speak to a detective. As the two sit down, Nancy tells the detective she is there to talk about Cherrylle Dell. She blasts into name-calling, directed at the 42-year-old widow and mother of three, Cherrylle. Nancy goes on to say that Cherrylle has been opening accounts of credit under fake names and reporting bogus burglaries to gain insurance money. When asked if she could prove her allegations, Nancy said no, leaving the detective with little to go on. He takes her statement and files it away for now. When asked how she knows Cherrylle, Nancy said they used to date, but the relationship ended and not on a good note. Nancy adds that she is suing Cherryll, claiming that her ex-lover stole money and clothing from her. Now the detective wonders if this is just a scorned lover out for revenge, but this is only the beginning. As Nancy is telling the detective this long detailed story, Nancy messes up and tells a little too much…it is too late now. She could not go back. The detectives knew there was much more to this story than revenge and a jilted lover. 215. For Sin Burns Like A Fire: Death of James Matheney

It is June 16, 1987, and we are in Nashville, Tennessee, and a beloved church named Emmanuel Church of Christ Oneness Pentecostal has experienced a substantial damaging fire. Detective Robert Moore reports to the scene. He quickly determined that the fire had severely damaged the structure, burning extremely hot. The organ had melted, and the chandeliers had fallen to the ground. The walls were black from soot and smoke damage. Although he could see the severity of the fire, he was not there to investigate the fire itself but rather something that the fireman discovered in the church's attic. Since there was no electricity, Moore had to use a flashlight to make his way. In the corner, he notices a pile of stuff, primarily unused wood, materials, just a bunch of stuff thrown on top of what looked like a rolled-up carpet. Wondering what could be on the rug, he begins to unroll it. As it unwinds, human feet appear, but the shock is yet to come. The body had no head, and half of the arm was missing. Upon closer inspection, he notices a belt with a belt buckle. The buckle had the initial ‘T’ on it. Only one person had such a buckle: the well-loved 44-year-old church pastor John David Terry. There was not a break-in, so robbery was out of the question. As the investigation begins, investigators will travel down a deep and twisty path to get a resolution. What they find out is difficult to believe, even for seasoned detectives. 214. Death Of A Cover Girl: Raudha Athif

This is a case that has stuck with Jen for a few years now. In late 2015 a breathtaking image of nineteen-year-old Raudha Athif wearing a snow-white sleeveless dress, standing chest high in the cerulean, teal swirl of the Indian Ocean. It wouldn’t take long before the image snagged the attention of Vogue magazine. While being a model is a dream for many young women. Raudha had aspirations of being a doctor like her father. After receiving a scholarship to Islami Bank Medical College, Raudha headed to Bangladesh, which was quite a culture shock. Raudha adapted beautifully. When her Vogue cover hit the stands in October of 2016, the happiness Raudha felt soon gave way to concern. The students at the school began to treat her differently. She received threats and insults for not dressing in a manner appropriate for a Muslim girl. Raudha adhered to the dress code while at school, but modeling, in general, is looked down upon in some of the factions of Islam. To have her depicted in the magazine with exposed arms, shoulders, and hair made matters even worse. By the end of March 2017, Raudha was found dead in her dorm room. While doctors in Bangladesh ruled her death a homicide, Raudha's family believes it was foul play.Join Cam & Jen as they discuss "Death of a Cover Girl: Raudha Athif." 213. Trolling for Murder: The Killings of Billy and Billie Jean

It is January 31, 2012, and a family member decides to drop by the home of 24-year-old Billie Jean Hayworth and her fiance 35-year-old Bill Payne. The couple, who shared a 6-month-old son, had recently gotten engaged and we were excited for the future. A family member who regularly stopped by to check in on the young family was always greeted by the baby crawling around. This time it was different. After not being invited into the home, she entered through the unlocked door. She was immediately thrown off since there was not the usual hustle and bustle of the morning. Instead, pure silence. The women called out to them but no one responded. As she made his way through the hallway, she looked into the bedroom and saw Bill Payne lifeless on the bed. Then he came upon Billie Jean on the floor, covered in blood, with her still clutching to her baby boy. The baby had her mother’s blood on him but seemed to be unharmed. The woman makes a frantic call to 911 in shock from what she has witnessed and tries to soothe the baby. Police head to the location nervous about what they will discover. This is not the norm in this quiet Tennessee town of Mountain City, population 2415. Agent Scott Lott from the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation reports to the scene. He determines Bill Payne had a gunshot wound to the face and his throat had been slit. Billie Jean had a gunshot wound to the head as well. The house did not seem to be in disarray indicating this was not a burglary gone wrong. What it did indicate was that someone wanted both of them dead and made sure to make that happen. The murders looked clean, as in a hit.
