221. The Murder of Mark Kilroy
Warning: This episode is graphic. Listener discretion is advised. It is a rite of passage for many American college students, and that is Spring Break. It’s a time when students can cut loose, drink too much, and make plenty of bad decisions. Whether Palm Springs or Palm Beach, kids flock to the surf, sun, and sand to have a week full of fun. As parents, we know our children are getting older, and we would probably prefer them not to go, but we have to trust them and know they will be ok but…what if the darkness that lurks out there is more evil than we could ever comprehend and it is just waiting for the right moment to strike. On Wednesday, March 15, 1989, in Brownsville, Texas, two young men came into the station to talk to Chief Investigator George Gavito. The two men tell the investigator their good friend is missing as they explain that they are visiting South Padre Island for spring break. When investigators finally learn what happened to Mark Kilroy, it is indeed the stuff of nightmares. 220. There Were Six: The Staudte Family Murders
Springfield, Missouri, is an unassuming town of historical significance. Located in the southwest portion of the state, Springfield is home to about 170,000 people. And although the city is no stranger to violent crime, as many might remember the now world-famous 1992 disappearance of the Springfield Three, it's mostly a quiet place to live. Mark and Diane Staudte resided in Springfield with their four children. Mark played the guitar and sang lead for a local band, and Diane was a nurse and the family's primary money maker. On Easter Sunday, April 8th, the paramedics and police were called to the Staudte home to find Mark unresponsive and without a pulse. Initial examination by the paramedics concluded that Mark had been dead for several hours. Nothing seemed unusual except a ring of blood around his mouth. The coroner ruled Mark died by natural causes.Mark and Diane's 26-year-old son Shaun would be found dead five months later. It would take the second oldest child, Sarah, to be admitted to the hospital in critical condition before an anonymous caller would ask the police to investigate. They feared the members of the Staudte family were being murdered one by one.Join Cam and Jen as they discuss 'There Were Six: The Staudte Family Murders'Research and writing by Lauretta Allen Listener Discretion by OctoberpodVHS & OctoberpodAMProducer Music & Editing by Nico at We Talk of DreamsSources:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Staudte_Family_Murdershttps://www.ozarksfirst.com/crimetraveler/crime-traveler-the-chilling-murders-of-the-staudte-family/https://www.newspapers.com/image/149506784/?terms=Diane%20Staudte&match=1https://www.newspapers.com/image/176114263/?terms=Diane%20Staudte&match=1https://www.newspapers.com/image/118485077/?terms=Diane%20Staudte&match=1https://www.newspapers.com/image/126626823/?terms=Diane%20Staudte&match=1https://www.newspapers.com/image/213404200/?terms=Rachel%20Staudte&match=1https://www.newspapers.com/image/159818284/?terms=Rachel%20Staudte&match=1https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/189253566/mark-alan-staudtehttps://www.newspapers.com/image/176114263/?terms=Diane%20Staudte&match=1https://www.mirror.co.uk/news/world-news/chilling-story-church-going-mum-7772251 Learn more about your ad choices. 219. Four For The Money: Lowell "Ed" Amos
It is Saturday morning, Dec 10, 1994, when a phone call from the fancy downtown Atheneum Hotel comes into the police. A hotel guest named Roberta Amos is found dead in the bed. Investigators are sent to the scene. Police ask the 51-year-old Lowell Amos, who goes by Ed, to recount the hours leading up to when he woke up and discovered his 37-year-old wife dead next to him. Ed said the previous night, the couple attended a Holiday party thrown by his employer, who booked several hotel rooms for the attendees to stay in. Ed said the couple was having a great time and drinking lots of bubbly when his wife, who goes by Bobbie, started whispering sweet nothings in his ear. The two left the party, but the night was not finished for the couple, who would attend yet another early morning party. What happened to Bobbie is not immediately apparent, but investigators suspect something is amiss. As they begin the investigation, they are led down a twisty path of mysterious deaths.Join Jen and Cam on this episode of Our True Crime Podcast entitled ‘Four for the Money: Lowell Ed Amos” Listener Discretion by @octoberpodVHSMusic is by our Producer. @wetalkofdreamsSources:https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0482468/reviewshttps://www.amazon.com/gp/video/detail/B0922VYDTK/ref=atv_dp_season_select_s1 "Married to Death"https://www.newspapers.com/article/the-indianapolis-news-lowell-amos-2/79308173/http://law.justia.com/cases/michigan/court-of-appeals-unpublished/1998/19980818-c200898-0059-200898-opn.htmlhttps://www.chicagotribune.com/news/ct-xpm-1996-11-05-9611050141-story.htmlhttps://www.findagrave.com/memorial/216028775/lowell-ed-amoshttps://www.inquisitr.com/3829909/lowell-ed-amos-bobbie-bobbe-amos-serial-killer-who-murdered-mom-wives-story-on-ids-pandoras-boxhttps://apnews.com/article/047ebeef9a58d47c559a30acc0ff1664http://media.wiley.com/product_data/excerpt/25/04712153/0471215325-2.pdfhttps://apnews.com/article/047ebeef9a58d47c559a30acc0ff1664http://www.mayhem.net/Crime/serial4.html Learn more about your ad choices. 217. Web of Lies: Cherrylle Dell
It is March 17, 1997, and the day is winding down for Killaloe Ontario police superintendent Ken Leppert. As he leaves the Ontario Provincial Police dept, he is greeted by 39-year-old Nancy Filmore. The visibly upset woman demands to speak to a detective. As the two sit down, Nancy tells the detective she is there to talk about Cherrylle Dell. She blasts into name-calling, directed at the 42-year-old widow and mother of three, Cherrylle. Nancy goes on to say that Cherrylle has been opening accounts of credit under fake names and reporting bogus burglaries to gain insurance money. When asked if she could prove her allegations, Nancy said no, leaving the detective with little to go on. He takes her statement and files it away for now. When asked how she knows Cherrylle, Nancy said they used to date, but the relationship ended and not on a good note. Nancy adds that she is suing Cherryll, claiming that her ex-lover stole money and clothing from her. Now the detective wonders if this is just a scorned lover out for revenge, but this is only the beginning. As Nancy is telling the detective this long detailed story, Nancy messes up and tells a little too much…it is too late now. She could not go back. The detectives knew there was much more to this story than revenge and a jilted lover. 215. For Sin Burns Like A Fire: Death of James Matheney
It is June 16, 1987, and we are in Nashville, Tennessee, and a beloved church named Emmanuel Church of Christ Oneness Pentecostal has experienced a substantial damaging fire. Detective Robert Moore reports to the scene. He quickly determined that the fire had severely damaged the structure, burning extremely hot. The organ had melted, and the chandeliers had fallen to the ground. The walls were black from soot and smoke damage. Although he could see the severity of the fire, he was not there to investigate the fire itself but rather something that the fireman discovered in the church's attic. Since there was no electricity, Moore had to use a flashlight to make his way. In the corner, he notices a pile of stuff, primarily unused wood, materials, just a bunch of stuff thrown on top of what looked like a rolled-up carpet. Wondering what could be on the rug, he begins to unroll it. As it unwinds, human feet appear, but the shock is yet to come. The body had no head, and half of the arm was missing. Upon closer inspection, he notices a belt with a belt buckle. The buckle had the initial ‘T’ on it. Only one person had such a buckle: the well-loved 44-year-old church pastor John David Terry. There was not a break-in, so robbery was out of the question. As the investigation begins, investigators will travel down a deep and twisty path to get a resolution. What they find out is difficult to believe, even for seasoned detectives. 214. Death Of A Cover Girl: Raudha Athif
This is a case that has stuck with Jen for a few years now. In late 2015 a breathtaking image of nineteen-year-old Raudha Athif wearing a snow-white sleeveless dress, standing chest high in the cerulean, teal swirl of the Indian Ocean. It wouldn’t take long before the image snagged the attention of Vogue magazine. While being a model is a dream for many young women. Raudha had aspirations of being a doctor like her father. After receiving a scholarship to Islami Bank Medical College, Raudha headed to Bangladesh, which was quite a culture shock. Raudha adapted beautifully. When her Vogue cover hit the stands in October of 2016, the happiness Raudha felt soon gave way to concern. The students at the school began to treat her differently. She received threats and insults for not dressing in a manner appropriate for a Muslim girl. Raudha adhered to the dress code while at school, but modeling, in general, is looked down upon in some of the factions of Islam. To have her depicted in the magazine with exposed arms, shoulders, and hair made matters even worse. By the end of March 2017, Raudha was found dead in her dorm room. While doctors in Bangladesh ruled her death a homicide, Raudha's family believes it was foul play.Join Cam & Jen as they discuss "Death of a Cover Girl: Raudha Athif." 213. Trolling for Murder: The Killings of Billy and Billie Jean
It is January 31, 2012, and a family member decides to drop by the home of 24-year-old Billie Jean Hayworth and her fiance 35-year-old Bill Payne. The couple, who shared a 6-month-old son, had recently gotten engaged and we were excited for the future. A family member who regularly stopped by to check in on the young family was always greeted by the baby crawling around. This time it was different. After not being invited into the home, she entered through the unlocked door. She was immediately thrown off since there was not the usual hustle and bustle of the morning. Instead, pure silence. The women called out to them but no one responded. As she made his way through the hallway, she looked into the bedroom and saw Bill Payne lifeless on the bed. Then he came upon Billie Jean on the floor, covered in blood, with her still clutching to her baby boy. The baby had her mother’s blood on him but seemed to be unharmed. The woman makes a frantic call to 911 in shock from what she has witnessed and tries to soothe the baby. Police head to the location nervous about what they will discover. This is not the norm in this quiet Tennessee town of Mountain City, population 2415. Agent Scott Lott from the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation reports to the scene. He determines Bill Payne had a gunshot wound to the face and his throat had been slit. Billie Jean had a gunshot wound to the head as well. The house did not seem to be in disarray indicating this was not a burglary gone wrong. What it did indicate was that someone wanted both of them dead and made sure to make that happen. The murders looked clean, as in a hit. 211. Dear Katherine: The Murder of Katherine Foster
One of the scariest yet most exciting things is letting go of your child as they become an adult and go to college. As a parent, you have done your job getting your child to this point; now, you will drop them off at college, trusting they will be safe and have a blast while getting an excellent education. That is how it is supposed to go, but sadly that isn’t always the case. Today we are headed to the southern united states to Mobile, Alabama, which struggles with New Orleans to claim the right to be the one Mardi Gras city. Debate is to which city helps the first mardi gras. It is a cute small, safe town. In Mobile, you will find the University of South Alabama. Now if you are a local or a student, it is simply South. The year is 1979, and 18-year-old Katherine Foster is excited to start college. Katherine has a beaming smile and friendly personality, but she also has the brains since she was the salutatorian of her class. What should be the best time of her life ends before she even really had a chance to get started.Join Jen and Cam on this episode of Our True Crime Podcast entitled "Dear Katherine: The Murder of Katherine Foster." 210. The Secret Life of Jeffrey Pelo
CONTENT WARNING This episode contains discussions of sexual assault.Bloomington-Normal is a metro area of about 130,000 people in north-central Illinois. Located just two hours southwest of Chicago, Blo-No, as it is affectionally called, is one of those cities in America that’s known for being, well, normal. It’s flat, there’s not much to see, and it's surrounded by cornfields. One local real estate agent describes Bloomington-Normal as the town that “has everything you need and nothing that you don’t.” It's a town where people feel safe. So, it was quite disconcerting when on the 4th of April in 2003, a twenty-five-year-old woman, who was sound asleep in her home in Bloomington-Normal, was suddenly and terrifyingly woken in the middle of the night by an intruder. This was the second rape in four months, and police noticed that the details of that case were terrifyingly similar. It was unusual for the town to have even one occurrence of stranger rape at all, let alone two. Something was horribly wrong. The police had the sickening suspicion that the town had its very first-ever serial rapist.Join Cam and Jen as they discuss "The Secret Life Of Jeffrey Pelo"Thank you to EJ Hammond for requesting this episode. You can find her book, Ted Bundy: Memories of the Beast hereResearch and writing by Lauretta Allen Listener Discretion by OctoberpodVHSProducer Music & Editing by Nico at We Talk of DreamsSources:https://caselaw.findlaw.com/il-court-of-appeals/1541002.htmlhttps://abcnews.go.com/Primetime/illinois-police-sergeant-jeffrey-pelo-doubled-serial-rapist/story?id=11497530https://www.wglt.org/show/wglts-sound-ideas/2018-01-10/bloomington-mom-shares-heroin-heartache-to-help-othershttps://www.newspapers.com/image/75556460/?terms=Jeffrey%20Pelo&match=1https://www.newspapers.com/image/75850779/?terms=Jeffrey%20Pelo&match=1https://www.newspapers.com/image/75540537/?terms=Jeffrey%20Pelo&match=1https://www.amazon.com/From-Protector-to-Predator/dp/B091JG4FGL/ref=sr_1_1?crid=23LHV8WP0NAGV&keywords=who+the+bleep+did+I+marry+Pelo&qid=1680189416&s=instant-video&sprefix=who+the+bleep+did+i+marry+pelo%2Cinstant- Learn more about your ad choices. 209. The Bone Collector: The Death of David Reed
There is a job for kids that doesn’t exist today: the old paperboy. Kids would wake before sunrise and hop on their shiny Schwinn bikes with a banana seat to deliver the newspapers to the neighborhood. 13-year-old David Reed was the local paper boy for the Pottsville Republican, and he always made sure to get papers to his neighbors in Schuylkill Haven so they could get the morning news with their coffee. David always wore his uniform, a t-shirt with the newspaper’s name and logo, when he delivered so people knew him and liked the kid. At this age, your bike is your transportation. You take great pride in it, and it gets you to where you want to be. One summer day, David left on his bicycle to go and meet up with friends. This was common; however, when he failed to come home, worry sets in as this was not like David. It was also a concern because David had juvenile diabetes, and eating on time was crucial. It would take years to find out what happened to David Reed.Join Jen and Cam on this episode of Our True Crime Podcast entitled 'The Bone Collector: The Death of David Reed.'Listener Discretion by @octoberpodVHSAll Music is by our Executive Producer @wetalkofdreamsSources:https://www.mcall.com/2009/02/27/man-sentenced-23-years-after-schuylkill-death-he-says-guilt-haunted-him-ever-since-fatal-blow-over-marijuana/https://www.mcall.com/2008/01/20/pursuing-break-in-boys-case/https://www.wnep.com/article/news/local/schuylkill-county/local-cold-case-makes-national-television-david-reed-joseph-geiger-files-bone-keeper-ae-network/523-09a8b600-9648-4c1a-bd61-7057b2d373bfhttp://berkspets.com/article.aspx?id=109811http://www2.readingeagle.com/article.aspx?id=103130https://www.nbcnews.com/id/wbna29413530http://www.mcall.com/news/all-coldcases-story-012008-story.htmlhttp://triblive.com/x/pittsburghtrib/news/regional/s_584353.html#axzz3pbYOOztOhttp://www.foxnews.com/story/2008/08/21/police-arrest-suspect-in-185-murder-pennsylvania-boy-13-who-left-home-on-bike.htmlhttps://www.amazon.com/gp/video/detail/B0B8QRSNCF/ref=atv_dp_season_select_s2 Learn more about your ad choices. 207. Confession from the Grave: Jack Jones Jr
Today’s case takes us to Fort Lauderdale, Florida, where it is May 31, 1991. The area is well-known to sunbathers and tourists alike. It is home to the Swimmers Hall of Fame and several high-end hotels and restaurants. Millions of people set off to soak up the sand and sunshine each year, and Lorraine Anne Barrett was no different. Lori, as she was known by her friends, was a 32-year Pennesylannia native who set off to enjoy some R and R. She had rented a room at the Days Inn Lauderdale and was about to enjoy her time. The following day, the hotel cleaning staff arrived to clean her room around noon but was shocked upon finding Lorriane dead and not from natural causes. A composite was made and shared with neighboring jurisdictions, but no leads were developed. The case grew cold. It would take some time to find the man responsible, but that was only the beginning of the story, with lots of twists and turns along the way.Join Jen and Cam of Our True Crime Podcast as we discuss ‘Confession from the Grave: Jack Jones Jr.’Listener Discretion is by Edward October from @octoberpodVHSAll music is by Nico @wetalkofdreamsSources:Det on The First 48https://www.facebook.com/thefirst48/videos/the-first-48-det-curcio-is-mongo/10151639755668909/https://www.thv11.com/article/news/jack-jones/91-717020ea-7af3-4e82-9637-5f80e9033522https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/arkansascompletesfirstdoubleexecutionfirstlethalinjectionsince2000jackjonesmarcelwilliamsdeath-a7700436.htmlhttps://wreg.com/news/prosecutors-executed-arkansas-inmate-claims-1983-florida-murder-after-death/https://archive.ph/20201104090227/https://www.sun-sentinel.com/news/crime/fl-ne-stewart-jones-murder-case-20190321-story.html#selection-1695.2-1725.116https://www.sun-sentinel.com/opinion/fl-op-col-grimm-wrongful-conviction-20190502-story.htmlhttps://media.arkansasonline.com/news/documents/2019/03/21/JACK_JONES_LETTER__TRANSCRIPT.pdf Learn more about your ad choices. 206. Without Remorse: The Frankston Serial Killer
Thank you to Donna for requesting this episode!*****Content Warning*****It has been theorized by the experts who study serial killers that a killer’s first victim often knows the offender or, at the very least, lives nearby. Sometimes they are neighbors or friends of friends, coworkers, or possibly people who attend their church. In 1992 on Claude Street in Seaford, Victoria, Australia, two women were unaware that they were about to be 'baby steps' for the person who would become known as the Frankston Serial Killer. They were his trial run, the middle rung on his escalating ladder of carnage. Within months, Paul Denyer would attack and four women, brutally murdering three.Paul Denyer is seeking parole in 2023, and many don't believe he should ever be released. 205. Hush Little Babies: Marybeth Tinning
It started with Jennifer, the third child of Marybeth and Joe, joining siblings Barbara and Joe Jr in December of 1971. Little Jennifer was not a healthy child and died from meningitis on January 3, 1972. This news hit Marybeth and Joe hard, especially Mary, who had just lost her father in October. Perhaps the stress ignited a slow-burning fire into a firestorm, or maybe it was always inside and had not yet appeared until now. Whatever the reason, there would be a trail of death with one person responsible for them all. Yet time and time again, the person was left to do it again and again. 204. Bad Creek Bridge: Taylor Paschal-Placker, Skyla Whitaker & Ashley Taylor
"Two young girls gunned down on a beautiful June day" is a headline we, Americans, are all too familiar with. However, most people would be shocked to discover that the brutal slayings occurred along a tree-lined dirt road in America's heartland. "That type of violence doesn't happen here," or "We moved to the country to get away from this type of thing," is what we often hear after such a violent act occurs. And indeed, those were the very emotions that locals expressed in June of 2008, when eleven-year-old Skyla Jade Whitaker and her best friend, thirteen-year-old Taylor Dawn Paschal-Placker, were shot thirteen times while walking home from the creek on a beautiful June afternoon.Police would work on solving the young girl's murder for three years without any luck. It would take the disappearance and murder of 23-year-old Ashley Taylor to lead police to Skyla's and Taylor's killer.Join Cam and Jen as they discuss "Bad Creek Bridge: Taylor Paschal-Placker, Skyla Whitaker, and Ashley Taylor."Promo from our friend Bob Motta of Defense Diaries. 203. The Butler Did It: Roy Fontaine
Today’s bizarre tale begins in Chelsea in 1977, where we go to the home of Walter Travers Scott- Elliot and his 60-year-old wife, Dorothy. The couple enjoyed the riches of what they had worked hard for all their lives, and they were pretty well off, upper crust if you will. Walter and Dorothy came from well-established families and lived in a penthouse apartment surrounded by expensive collectibles. The couple managed a small staff at home. In November of 1977, they hired a man named Roy Fontaine. Roy Fontaine presented himself just as you would imagine a butler would. He was refined and well-spoken. He quickly impacted the Scott-Elliots and gained their trust; they even let him sign checks for them and handle their finances. Unfortunately for the Scott-Elliots, there was a lot about their new butler that they did not know and would pay dearly for. Mr. Fontaine was not who he said he was; his real name was Archibald Thomson Hall, but that was only the beginning. 202. Terror in the Bushland: Carolynne Watson and Julian Buchwald
Four hours northwest of the central city of Melbourne, located in the southeast region of the continent, lies the vast and protected 1.6 million-acre Alpine National Park. Known as the adventure lovers' dream, the park's mountains make up part of what is known as the Great Dividing Range and offer stunning views of towering ridges, lush wildflower valleys, and majestic waterfalls. Plenty of camping, skiing, and hiking can be enjoyed if one is so inclined. However excellent the travel brochure for the Australian Alps may sound, locals understand that the landscape can also be a nightmare for people who are not adequately prepared. Victoria is home to at least four venomous snakes and any number of bees, wasps, ticks, and spiders. So when a local farmer driving to town saw two half-naked, sunburnt people stumble on the road before him, he realized they must have been lost in the park and immediately stopped to help them. The couple, seventeen-year-old Carolynne Watson and twenty-two-year-old Julian Buchwald were taken to Buchan police station. 201. The ABC Killer: Moses Sithole
On September 17, 1995, in Boksburg, South Africa, a Johannesburg Police Reservist had the day off and decided to enjoy the day by hunting rabbits. As the man was walking in the field, the putrid smell hit him. It smelled of death, but it was not just one decomposing body, but several. This was the dumping ground and the killing field of a serial killer. Some bodies were unrecognizable since they had been out there a long time, while others looked freshly killed. Thirty police officers, dogs, and a helicopter were called for a grid search. The police believed they knew who was responsible for these deaths since they knew a killer had been working in the area for nearly a year, but this was new. The killer had been killing women and dumping them but never like this, never all in one spot. He was getting reckless and didn’t care, or he was getting brave and better at his actions. The mass grave held ten bodies. Authorities would discover many more bodies in the places such as Atteridgeville, Boksburg, and Cleveland, earning him the moniker ABC Killer. 199. What Happened to Linda Sherman?
On June 28, 1990, two TWA flight attendants decided to grab a bite to eat near the St Louis Lambert airport. They decide to go to a local Mexican fave, Casa Gallardo, on St Charles Rock Road. The pair were seated at a table next to the window. As the pair were talking and trying to decide between the chimichanga or the steak soft tacos, but definitely a must is the grande margarita or, even better, a pitcher of margs. Sitting at their table, one woman noticed something in the bushes across the parking lot. It was hard to make out, and even when they questioned if what they thought they saw was truly what it was. One of the flight attendants called over the manager to point it out. The manager shut the blinds to all the windows facing that direction. It was nearly 1 pm when the manager called the Bridgeton police. After the police arrived, the crime scene investigators followed. The flashbulbs were popping, and crime scene tape went up. It was as if someone had purposely placed it there to stare at the patrons of the restaurant. The dirty skull looked fake, but it was very real. 194. Roch Theriault and Ant Hill Kids Cult
*****CONTENT WARNING*****In 1984, the beautiful, tranquil area of Burnt River in Ontario, Canada, attracted the attention of the free-spirited, organic-food-growing faith community called the Ant Hill Kids. Along an isolated road on August 16th, 1989, it was here that a member of that faith community hitch-hiked her way to a hospital, protecting the stump that used to be her right arm. A former nurse herself, Gabrielle Lavallee knew only too well the horrors that could befall an untreated amputation. But any horror that could result from rampant infection was mild compared to the horror she’d already endured.Gabrielle, determined to leave the "utopian" community behind, eventually spilled her story to the police. Gabrielle had existed in conditions far from utopian. She had been living in an absolute sadistic hellscape, controlled and manipulated by the Ant Hill Kids leader, a Quebec man named Roch Theriault. The Mockingbird Hill Massacre: Ronald Gene Simmons Day 12 The 12 Nightmares Brefore Christmas
In the small town of Cloudcroft, located in a mountainous region of New Mexico, rumors began to surround a seventeen-year-old girl named Sheila Simmons. It was 1981, and most 17-year-old girls were excited about watching music videos on the newly launched 24-hour music channel MTV, reading Teen magazines, dressing in the latest fashion trends, and taking over the landline to chat with each other about their day and other important things. But Sheila's reality was, tragically, much darker. Shy, ashamed, and threatened into silence, she finally admitted her secret to a school counselor after much pressure: she was pregnant. What's more, the father of her unborn child was also the baby's grandfather, 40-year-old Ronald Gene Simmons. When he learned he was being investigated by authorities, Simmons felt betrayed. In a letter discovered almost a decade later, he warned his daughter, quote, "You have destroyed me, and you have destroyed my trust in you…I will see you in Hell."Little did anyone know, things would only get worse from that moment on.Join Jen and Cam on the 5th Annual Our True Crime Podcast’s 12 Nightmares Before Christmas Day 12: The Mockingbird Hill Massacre: Ronald Gene SimmonsListener Discretion by @octoberpodVHS All music is courtesy of our Executive Producer @wetalkofdreams Researched and Written by Jesse HawkeSources:Sourceshttps://www.latimes.com/archives/la-xpm-1987-12-30-mn-21766-story.html https://encyclopediaofarkansas.net/entries/ronald-gene-simmons-3731/ https://apnews.com/article/6c5ee3b239d03ca1b0302e14795ed02c https://murderpedia.org/male.S/s1/simmons-ronald-gene.htm https://truecrimefanclub.com/2019/06/05/ronald-gene-simmons/ http://www.clarkprosecutor.org/html/death/US/simmons131.htm Learn more about your ad choices. Bad Romance: Charles Starkweather and Caril Fugate Day 11 The 12 Nightmares Before Christmas
The year is 1958, and America is still innocent in terms of evil people. We know they were always around, but with snail mail and no internet, things that made the news are not like they are today. Someone commits a heinous crime in Manchester, England, and in mere seconds, we here in the US hear about it. Today's case, Day 11, takes us back to when Eisenhouse and Nixon led the US and the FBI, led by J. Edgar Hoover, was America’s watchdog. Even though it entered the lexicon in early 1900, the word teenager was coming into the common language. Teens were becoming more independent from their parents thanks to public education. No longer were young children pulled from school to go to work. This led to some rebellion from those teens, who were better to show the cause than James Dean and Elvis. Perhaps it was perfect timing in the US, or maybe it was the shock of how two teenagers could capture the world's attention and go down in infamy. The couple would be memorialized in such movie classics as Terrance Malik’s 1974 Badlands with Martin Sheen and Sissy Spacek as the leads, Tarrantino’s True Romance, David Lynch’s Wild at Hart, Oliver Stone’s Natural Born Killers. Even today, the couple still holds our gaze with movies, tv shows, songs, books, and more. The Grim Sleeper: Lonnie Franklin Jr Day 10 The 12 Nightmares Before Christmas
On April 17, 1974, a seventeen-year-old girl in Stuttgart, Germany, was visiting her boyfriend. After saying her goodbyes, she left for the train station at around 12:30 am. Along the way, a Fiat with three passengers pulled up beside her to ask for directions. These men, who were US Army soldiers, asked the girl for directions and offered her a ride home. The girl thought that the three were trustworthy. Sadly, her instincts were very quickly proved wrong. One of the men sprung a knife on her, and they drove to a remote location to sexually assault her. All three of the men raped her, and one of them took photographs during the attack. Ingrid was brought back to the car and finally dropped off at home. Ingrid, thinking on her feet, pretended that she was interested in the men, coaxing them to give her a phone number so she could get back in touch with them later. One of them fell for it and agreed, giving her his number. This man was 21-year-old Lonnie David Franklin Jr, a US army private cook stationed at the Kelley Barracks in Stuttgart. Ingrid didn’t know she was not the only victim of the three men that night or that this man would go on to become one of the most prolific serial killers of all time in America.Join Jen and Cam on the 5th Annual Our True Crime Podcast’s 12 Nightmares Before Christmas Day 10 The Grim Sleeper: Lonnie Franklin JrThe photos of the unidentified women suspected to be victims of Franklin are available to view at the following link: https://www.cbsnews.com/pictures/grim-sleeper-serial-killer-suspects-secret-photos/9/. It is November 11, 1988, when Detective John Cabrera and his team pay a visit to the once regal but past its prime Victorian home located on F Street in Sacramento, California. The detectives are conducting a wellness check on 51-year-old Alvaro "Bert" Montoya. Bert, a tenant at the home, has an intellectual disability. His social worker had phoned the police, worried that he was missing since she had not heard from him. They knock on the door and are greeted by a landlady of the home, an older woman. Det. Caberea asked her if they could look around the place, and she agreed and told them to go ahead. “Dig in my yard. The Snapshot Killer: Christopher Wilder Day 8 The 12 Nightmare Before Christmas
***The audio issues have been fixed. Please email us at [email protected] if you hear any problems with any of our episodes. Thank you for being so understanding! -JenDay 8On March 5th, 1984, a twenty-three-year-old Orange Bowl Princess named Elizabeth “Beth” Kenyon left the parking lot of the Coral Gables High School where she worked as a special needs teacher. Beth had also been a finalist in the Miss Florida contest in 1982. She thought the pageants were a lot of fun, but her heart was with the kids she taught. She waved goodbye to the security guard on duty, and it is presumed she was headed to the gym. However, she would never make it to the gym, nor would she make it home to her apartment on Ives Dairy Road. The police did list Beth as a missing person but assured the Kenyons their daughter was fine, claiming that young women her age went away for a few days without telling their parents all the time. Beth’s parents knew that their daughter was not that irresponsible. Convinced that something was wrong and unhappy with the apathetic attitude of the police, the Kenyons hired private investigators, a father-son duo named Ken Whittaker Senior and Junior. Ken Senior was an ex-FBI Chief and amazingly thorough. No clue was too small for him. Hiring them would be the most important step in this case.Join Jen and Cam on the 5th Annual Our True Crime Podcast’s 12 Nightmares Before Christmas Day 8: The Snapshot Killer: Christopher WilderListener Discretion by @octoberpodVHS All music is courtesy of our Executive Producer @wetalkofdreams Researched and written by JenCopy Editor Lauretta AllenSources:https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/43410008-the-snapshot-killer https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QmBXz0Emm38https://www.aetv.com/real-crime/beauty-queen-killer-christopher-wilder-florida-playboyhttps://www.amazon.com/Christopher-Wilder-Historical-Killers-Murderers-ebook/dp/B01EZ3Z87W/ref=sr_1_3?keywords=christopher+wilder&qid=1638501577&s=books&sr=1-3https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RiJovpsOP1ohttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TQDW9pr_KzA&t=1287shttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NiHK-G1QsHshttps://news.google.com/newspapers?nid=1301&dat=19870426&id=QHZWAAAAIBAJ&pg=5084,7474822&hl=enhttps://www.upi.com/Archives/1984/08/15/Tina-Marie-Risico-the-teenager-who-accompanied-serial-killer/5727461390400/https://web.archive.org/web/20120421001039/http://www.trutv.com/library/crime/serial_killers/predators/wilder/index.htmlhttps://web.archive.org/web/20120227031048/http://www.lawandordnance.com/Mystery-And-A-Spree-Killer.htmlhttps://web.archive.org/web/20120220033821/http://www.chronicle-express.com/news/police_and_fire/x342383242/-Nothing-ever-happens-herehttps://web.archive.org/web/20160403145301/http://www.nydailynews.com/news/crime/beauty-queen-killer-takes-bloody-ride-1984-article-1.2366878http://dingeengoete.blogspot.com/2012/04/christopher-wilder-beauty-queen-killer.htmlhttps://news.google.com/newspapers?nid=1817&dat=19840425&id=cDodAAAAIBAJ&pg=6904,7213272https://web.archive.org/web/20131212203006/http://www.thefreelibrary.com/A+TEEN%27S+TERRIFYING+DAYS+WITH+A+KILLER+IN+1984,+AN+L.A.-AREA+GIRL...-a0179511757https://healthpsychologyconsultancy.wordpress.com/2012/08/12/making-of-a-monster-christopher-wilder-the-beauty-queen-killer/https://www.dailybreeze.com/2021/07/19/south-bay-history-christopher-wilders-savage-crime-rampage-included-a-stop-off-in-the-south-bay/https://charleyproject.org/case/elizabeth-ann-kenyonhttps://buffalonews.com/news/local/crime-and-courts/1983-slaying-of-young-woman-may-have-been-work-of-serial-killer/article_8f92c889-687e-50fc-84fc-53cb210b162f.html Learn more about your ad choices. A Christmas Massacre: The Carnation Murders-Day 6-The 12 Nightmares Before Christmas
The 6th day takes us to the small town of Carnation, Washington. On December 24, 2007, 60-year-old Wayne Anderson, a retired engineer from Boeing, and his wife of 31 years, 61-year-old wife, Judy, were anxiously awaiting the arrival of their family to start celebrating the holiday. It was tradition for the Anderson family to get together on Christmas Eve. It was Wayne’s favorite holiday, and they celebrated by opening presents, eating, and enjoying everyone’s company. The couple was expecting their 29-year-old daughter Michele and her partner, Joe, who lived in a trailer on Anderson’s 11 acres. Their 32-year-old son Scott and his wife, Erica, would bring their two small children. In addition, 41-year-old Mary and her son were also planning on coming. At around 5 pm, the king county sheriff’s office receives a 911 call from Anderson’s home. When the dispatcher picked up the phone, they heard a woman screaming. The call only lasts 10 seconds before the line goes dead. The dispatcher tried to call back twice, but the calls went to voice mail. What happened in the home was vicious and savage, but the biggest shock was who committed this heinous crime. Valley of Death: Lewis Clark Valley Murders Day 5 The 12 Nightmares of Christmas
On day 5, we are headed to Lewistown, Idaho. It is also home to Lewis and Clark State College, where 21-year-old Kristina Nelson was a student in 1982. Kristy, as her friends and family call her, was a bright, articulate student studying business. While not attending classes, she enjoyed her passion for painting. She started a job as a custodian at the Lewiston Civic theatre to get to know more community members. Kristy’s step-sister, 19-year-old Brandy Miller, also worked at the theater with Kristy. Just like Kristy, Brandy was artistically inclined. On September 12, 1982, Kristina left a note for her boyfriend, who would be coming over later to hang out with them, and she didn’t want him to be confused when Kristy and Brandy were not home. The two needed to go to the store to pick up a few snacks for the night. The note assured him they would be home soon. Plans changed as Kristy’s boyfriend got home from work and fell asleep instead of going to hang out with Kristy. The following morning, he headed to Kristy’s apartment and found no one home. He did see the note from the night before on the table. Not thinking much of it, he went on his way. However, when the day came and went, the following day, having still not heard from her, he went to the Lewiston theatre and learned that she had failed to show up for work. In fact, none of Kristy’s friends had seen her at all. Kristy was very responsible, and her friends knew something was wrong. The boyfriend went to the police to file a missing person report for Kristy and Brandy.Join Jen and Cam on the 5th Annual Our True Crime Podcast’s 12 Nightmares Before Christmas -Day 5:Valley of Death: The Lewis Clark Valley MurdersListener Discretion by @octoberpodVHS All music is courtesy of our Executive Producer @wetalkofdreams Sources:https://vimeo.com/51442715:Confluencehttps://lmtribune.com/northwest/fbi-keeps-file-open-on-kristin-david-case/article_ec559279-df44-5002-a29f-4d2c18bb978c.htmlhttps://lmtribune.com/northwest/fbi-keeps-file-open-on-kristin-david-case/article_ec559279-df44-5002-a29f-4d2c18bb978c.htmlhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Center_for_Missing_and_Exploited_Childrenhttps://klewtv.com/news/local/a-look-into-the-suspect-in-christina-white-disappearance Learn more about your ad choices. Canada's Youngest Serial Killer: Cody Legebokoff Day 4 The 12 Nightmares Before Christmas
Cody Legebokoff was born on January 21, 1990. He was raised in Fort St. James, a districtmunicipality characterized by severe, snowy winters and short summers on the southeastern shore of Stuart Lake in British Columbia. Cody grew up hunting for grouse and fishing for trout with his family, with whom he had a close relationship. Cody was into country music and dirt biking. He played minor hockey and soccer and competed on school downhill skiing and snowboarding teams. When he graduated from Fort St. James Secondary School in 2008, Cody spent a brief time living in Lethbridge, Alberta, before moving back to British Columbia and settling in Prince George, about 100 miles southeast of Fort St. James, working as a mechanic for a Ford dealership. Cody is presented as a “perfectly normal” young man, described by family and friends as popular, friendly, sociable, and kind-hearted, showing no propensity for violence. For these reasons, the residents of Fort St. James were left shocked and in disbelief when, after a routine traffic stop in November 2010, Cody was found to have committed a brutal murder. The discovery of this murder was just the start and would eventually lead to Cody Legebokoff being named one of Canada’s youngest serial killers.Join Jen and Cam on the 5th Annual Our True Crime Podcast’s 12 Nightmares Before Christmas Day 4 Canada's Youngest Serial Killer: Cody LegebokoffListener Discretion by @octoberpodVHS All music is courtesy of our Executive Producer @wetalkofdreams Written and researched by Kira Ackling Sources:“Fort St. James” - Wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fort_St._James“Cody Legebokoff” - Wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cody_Legebokoff“Cody Legebokoff: Canada’s Youngest Serial Killer” - Crime Travellerhttps://www.crimetraveller.org/2016/08/cody-legebokoff-canadas-youngest-serial-killer/“Who is Cody Alan Legebokoff?” - Global News https://globalnews.ca/news/167103/who-is-cody-alan-legebokoff/“Loren Leslie Murder: Where is Cody Legebokoff Now?” - The Cinemaholichttps://thecinemaholic.com/loren-leslie-murder-where-is-cody-legebokoff-now/“Cody Alan Legebokoff” - Murderpedia https://murderpedia.org/male.L/l/legebokoff-cody.htm“Cody Legebokoff had blood on face, legs when arrested, Crown says” - CBC Newshttps://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/british-columbia/cody-legebokoff-had-blood-on-face-legs-when-arrested-crown-says-1.2663413“Autopsy reveals extensive injuries, Legebokoff trial hears” - Prince George Citizenhttps://www.princegeorgecitizen.com/legebokoff-trial-archive/autopsy-reveals-extensive-injuries-legebokoff-trial-hears-3712443“Legebokoff admits to playing a role in Stuchenko murder” - Prince George Free Presshttp://www.pgfreepress.com/legebokoff-admits-to-playing-a-role-in-stuchenko-murder/“Body found in gravel pit is missing mother of six” - CTV News https://bc.ctvnews.ca/body-found-in-gravel-pit-is-missing-mother-of-six-1.449385“For family of missing and murdered woman, violence has historical roots” - Alaska HighwayNews https://www.alaskahighwaynews.ca/bc-news/for-family-of-missing-and-murdered-woman-violence-has-historical-roots-3494237“Natasha Montgomery, Missing from British Columbia since 2010” - Justice for Native Womenhttp://www.justicefornativewomen.com/2016/04/natasha-montgomery-missing-from-british.html“The victims of alleged BC serial killer” - The Globe and Mailhttps://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/british-columbia/the-victims-of-alleged-bc-serial-killer/article557840/“‘A slap in the face’: serial killer moved to medium security” - National Newshttps://www.aptnnews.ca/national-news/a-slap-in-the-face-serial-killer-moved-to-medium-security/“Woman tells murder trial of relationship with Legebokoff” - Times Colonist Learn more about your ad choices. Killer Uncle Joe:Rima Traxler, Kara Rudd & Chila Silvernails Day 3 The 12 Nightmares Before Christmas
It is day 3, and we are headed to Longview, Washington. It is a quiet, safe town located about 50 miles outside Portland, Oregon. It is May 15, 1985, when Danelle Traxler is waiting for her young daughter, 8-year-old Rima, to arrive home from school after her walk home. Her mother had a strange feeling knowing that Rima was never one to be late. Danelle went outside and traveled the same path Rima would have, hoping to run into her, but she did not see her. Danelle went home and called the police to report her 8-year-old missing. Danelle informs officers what Rima was wearing that day and emphasizes that Rima would never talk to strangers, much less get into a car with one. In fact, Rima had a password that her family would use in an emergency. Anyone asking Rima to get in the car with them-family or even friends-- would have to have the family password. No matter who it was, they had to have the password to let Rima know it was ok. It was as if Rima had simply disappeared. Sadly, this was not the first time a young girl disappeared from the area; even worse, it would not be the last. The Babes In The Woods Murders Day 2 The 12 Nightmares Before Christmas
On the 9th of October 1986, Karen Hadaway and Nicola Fellows returned home from school, running through the front doors of their respective homes, eager to get changed and play outside. Around 5 pm, the girls played with friends outside a neighbor's house. Shortly after this, the girls headed to Wild Park; despite knowing they were not allowed there, Nicola was told by her parents that the “boogeyman” lived there, hoping to scare her away from ever entering. Sadly, for unknown reasons, the girls entered the park that afternoon. The girls were spotted around 5:15 pm by a park policeman, playing on some trees, who warned them that they would hurt themselves. As the afternoon turned into evening, both families began to worry. 8 pm was their bedtime, and they both knew to be home by then, but there was no sign of either of them. Kiss and Kill Murder: Betty Williams- Day 1 -The 12 Nightmares Before Christmas
Our first nightmare before Christmas takes up back in time to 1961. It is March in Odessa, Texas, and while the state is known for being warm, the spring air is still crisp in the mornings. The William’s household is getting ready for the day. Mrs. Williams had made breakfast for her 17-year-old daughter Betty who is currently a senior at Odessa High School. Screaming her name from the small kitchen, Betty did not answer. Like most moms of teenagers, we are all too familiar with the oversleeping kid, so Mrs. Williams makes the walk down the hall to Betty’s room and knocks on the door, telling Betty her breakfast is getting cold and she is going to be late for school. When Betty doesn’t answer, she jiggles the door knob and realizes the door is locked. Mrs. Williams, perhaps out of fear or, more likely, anger, leaves the house through the front door to go around to the back of the house. Betty had an outside door in her bedroom, and well, Betty had been known to not always follow her parent's rules. As she opened the door, anger was now gone as she gazed upon a bed that had not yet been slept in during the night. Betty was missing.Join Jen and Cam on the 5th Annual Our True Crime Podcast’s 12 Nightmares Before Christmas -Day 1: Kiss and Kill Murder: Betty Williams.Listener Discretion by @octoberpodVHS All music is courtesy of our Executive Producer @wetalkofdreams Sources:https://www.nydailynews.com/true-crime-justice-story/ny-kiss-and-kill-murder-ghost-of-odessa-high-school-20221029-gnokrx6tozfchdkvuxgejbqdpm-story.htmlhttps://www.cbs7.com/content/news/FIRST-ON-CBS7-Kiss-and-Kill-killer-has-died-504111961.htmlhttps://www.imdb.com/title/tt5156498/https://medium.com/of-misdeeds-and-mysteries/killer-claims-girl-begged-him-to-shoot-her-6824335131bhttps://showbizcorner.com/betty-williams-murder-update-john-mack-herringhttps://www.amazon.com/gp/customer-reviews/RCRRBO7JMNKF7?ASIN=097775586X Learn more about your ad choices. 193. Spiderman of Denver: Theodore Coneys
It is October 17, 1941, and 73-year-old Phillip failed to answer his front door. Since his wife was in the hospital, the neighbors took turns having him over for dinner so he would not be all alone. This evening Phillip was excepted to come to the neighbor's house for food, and he didn’t show up. Not sure why the neighbor went to Philip’s house and knocked on the door, but no one answered. Worried something was wrong, she gathered a few more neighbors and went back to the house. After checking all the doors and windows, they located a window that was unlocked and a neighbor crawled into the window. The worst fears became a reality when the young woman started screaming about what she had discovered inside. E****This is a brutal episode. Listener discretion is advised ****In April of 1973, on Friday the 13th, Elsie Ralph was at work, bartending at the Punch Bowl Tavern in the Rainbow Hill district of Worcester, England. At closing time, her husband came to pick her up and left their three young children at home with their lodger, David McGreavy. An hour later, as the couple approached their home, they were met by police, informing them that they could not enter their home. Elsie panicked and begged to know why. The police officer gravely told them, “There’s been a murder.” The police would not immediately share with the couple precisely who had been murdered or the details of the crime. Elsie became hysterical, and an ambulance medic gave her a sedative. 191. The Suitcase Killer: Steven Zelich
We are headed to Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, a resort town in the Midwest. The summer tourist season is about to kick off. The popular destination is located on Geneva Lake and has been popular for years, with everyone from the elite to kids hitting up the water parks. On June 5, 2014, a call came into the Walworth County Sheriff's Department at about 3:20 pm. The dispatch informed them that laying on the side of Como Road, were two suitcases discovered by a local farmer. The farmer attempted to move them, but as he approached, the smell let him know that he needed to call the police. As police arrived on the scene, they located two suitcases, a black one with plenty of insect activity on it and a purple one. Police unzipped the black one and discovered the body of a female inside. Even though the body was badly decomposed, it was a female, and her body was intact. There was a ball gag in her mouth attached to her head by a strap. Around her neck, there was a rope with both of her hands behind her body. It would take a while to find out who was responsible but they would find him.Join Jen and Cam on this episode of ‘Our True Crime Podcast’ as we discuss ‘The Suitcase Killer: Steven Zelich.’As always, our listener discretion is by Edward October @octoberpodVHS Check him out, you will love him. 189. Sins of the Mother: Diane Downs
It was Thursday, May 19, 1983, at 10:48 pm when a red Nissan pulled up to the McKenzie-Willamette Hospital emergency room drop-off door honking the horn repeatedly. A blonde woman hops out of the car, screaming for help, and points to her car. Someone shot my kids, she yelled. Nurses Rose Martin and Shelby Day ran to the car and were momentarily stunned, noticing all the blood inside the vehicle. Inside there were three small children, one in the front seat and two in the backseat. When confronted with what was in front of them, hospital staff were called to come into the ER to help assist. Dr. John Mackey, the physician in charge, called the hospital’s number one surgeon Dr. Fred Whilhite came back to work because it was bad, it was very bad. Chest wounds to children and the conditions were grave. The girl in the front seat seemed to be already gone, but the ER staff tried desperately to bring her back to life, but it was too late; she would be pronounced dead in the ER. While the two in the backseat were still alive, they were struggling to breathe. The staff continued to try to save the other two children. They were not sure if they could be saved; with the gunshot wounds, each had severe loss of blood. To try to make breathing better for them, each was given a tracheotomy. So far, what they were doing was working; the children were alive and seemed to be stable. What was more important was why would anyone do this and, more importantly, who?
