289. The Year of Terror: Florida's Flat Tire Murders
The summer of 1975 found the United States obsessed with Magic 8 Balls, mood rings, and disco music. People partied and danced to ”The Hustle,” all while wearing their hip-hugging bell bottoms. The movie Jaws dominated the box-office, and a new horror writer named Stephen King had just appeared on the scene, scaring anyone who dared to read his books. The people of Florida were going through a real-life horror story: Women, some as young as fourteen, were disappearing and turning up dead in canals. Many in law enforcement were adamant that there was no connection to any of the dead women that year, and others thought they were all connected.Join Jen and Cam as they discuss 'The Year of Terror: Florida’s Flat Tire Murders.'Anyone with information on the murders of Barbara Schreiber and Darlene Zetterower or on any of the other murders mentioned in this podcast is urged to contact Det. 288. A Body in the River: The Murder of Dr. Paul Campagna
The Memorial Day weekend brought swarms of tourists to Niagara Falls, eager to celebrate under the sun. Just an hour away, a group of local teens gathered at Wayne Fleet Quarry, diving into the water and marking the unofficial start of summer. Alison and her friends, thrilled to leave the school year behind, decided to up the ante by jumping from an old bridge spanning the quarry. But as they reached the top, something unusual in the water caught their eye: a large, bulky bag emblazoned with "US" in bold, black letters. Curiosity piqued, they made their way down to inspect it. But the water around the bag turned red before they could haul it to shore. This wasn’t discarded junk—junk doesn’t bleed. Panicked, the teens scrambled up the road, frantically waving down a passing car, whose driver quickly called the police.Join Jen and Cam of Our True Crime Podcast on this episode entitled ‘A Body in the River: The Murder of Dr. Paul Campagna.’Listener discretion is by @octoberpodVHS.All Music is by our Editor @theinkypawprint.This episode is proudly sponsored by Yaman.Welcome to Yaman the very latest and greatest in J-Beauty innovations Listeners can visit YA-MANUSA.com/discount/TCP for a 20% discountAlso proudly sponsored by sleepcreme.comThe World's Original and Finest CBD Topical for SleepOrder your bottle at sleepcreme.com. 287. Evil in the East: Sara Anne Wood & James Bernardo
It was frigidly cold in January of 1994, with snow drifts a foot high, as twelve-year-old Rebecca Savarese made her way to Notre Dame Middle School in Pittsfield, Massachusetts. Suddenly, there was a man at her elbow. She was completely taken off guard because he had approached her from behind. She gave a startled jump, and the man said to her, “Do you see this gun I have?” Rebecca said that she had seen it. The man then pointed at his truck and instructed her to get in. Rebecca balked, and although she remained calm, her mother’s words echoed through her mind. Never get in a stranger’s vehicle. When the man urged her to get into his truck, Rebecca pretended as though she was having an asthma attack. She pretended to have trouble breathing and feigned dizziness. Her actions took the man off guard for just a split second. He grabbed her and got a hold of her backpack. Rebecca wriggled out of it and took off running down the street, leaving the man holding her pack. As she was running Rebecca saw a man standing outside a bank, “Sir, sir, sir! A man tried to kidnap me!” she said. The man ushered her into the bank, where they called the police. There was no way that Rebecca Savarese could have known that morning when she got out of bed that she was going to inadvertently play a part in catching a child killer. She had no idea that her actions on that day would bring closure to two families and probably stop an untold number of other children from experiencing a horrific early demise. She wasn’t thinking about any of that. But when the moment came, Rebecca knew one thing. She wasn’t getting in that vehicle. “If I’d gotten in that truck, I just knew I was going to end up someplace dead,” she later told reporters. Of that, Rebecca was most likely correct.Join Jen and Cam as they discuss "Evil in the East: Sara Anne Wood & James Bernardo"If you have any information that could help locate Sara Anne Wood's remains, please contact The Major Crimes Unit at 315-366-6000.A huge thank you to Sleep Creme for sponsoring this episode. 283. The Second Death of the Bells Bend Killer: Nashville's Frankenstein
This case is shocking. Shocking in many ways and I can't believe it's not talked about. The only place I've seen this is on Southern Gothic from our friend Brandon. When he first saw a small blurb about it in a book, he didn't even think it was true so he asked Lauretta to do some research. Sure enough, it is 100% true. As sensational as it was and is, I can't believe it's been forgotten. So after you listen, make sure you catch the Southern Gothic episode "The Curious Case of Knox Martin."In late March of 1879, in Davidson County, Tennessee, a wagon carrying a prisoner by the name of Knox Martin was headed to the gallows. John Kirk and Sons were busy building the scaffold that would host the hanging later that afternoon.Mothers pulled their children out of school so that they could take them to the execution. Nearly 10,000 people were making their way to the location nestled between two ridges; some had even camped out overnight to guarantee the best view. For years to come, some folks in attendance at this execution would have an unbelievable story to tell. It appears that in the days leading up to his date with the gallows, Knox Martin was approached by two doctors from the nearby Vanderbilt University, who, having great interest in galvanism, and who, having read Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, wondered if Knox Martin would allow them to use his dead body for an unusual and ethically questionable experiment. 282. Real Life Boogeymen: The Murder of Kevin Thorpe and Laura Craig
It is January 8, 1981, and we going to Lassen County, California, where we encounter 21-year-old Kevin Thorpe. After completing high school, Kevin enlisted in the Navy, serving for three years before returning to his hometown of Ridgecrest, California. Upon his return, he met a young woman named Laura Craig at a social gathering. Laura, a mother to a young child, captivated Kevin, who was undeterred by her circumstances; his affection for her was profound. Their relationship developed quickly and intensely—an embodiment of the adage, “When you know, you know.”Eager for a fresh start, Laura and Kevin packed their belongings into Kevin's white Ford Elite, towing a utility trailer, and left Ridgecrest for Oregon, where they hoped to be closer to Kevin’s brother. They made the bittersweet decision to leave their baby, Treena, with Laura’s mother until they settled in. As they took the scenic backroads north on Highway 395, a sudden jolt signaled trouble: the trailer had a flat tire. They decided to press on to Madeline, where they encountered a seemingly helpful man who offered assistance and invited Laura to warm up inside with his wife. Just as they began to fix the tire, three other men arrived, discussing plans to meet women in Oregon. Though Kevin wanted to continue their journey that night, little did they know, that the warmth of the cafe would soon be overshadowed by a chilling darkness, as their lives would be forever altered by the intentions of those they encountered.Join Cam and Jen on this episode of Our True Crime Podcast entitled ‘Real Life Boogeymen: The Murders of Kevin Thorpe and Laura Craig.’Listener Discretion by @OctoberpodVHSAll Music is by our Editor @theinkypawprintThis episode is proudly sponsored by Yaman. 281. Something About Mamie: The Murder of Mamie Thurman
In Logan County, West Virginia, there have been sightings of the ghost of a murdered woman that haunts 22 Mine Road. But underneath the spooky legend and sightings is a chilling story about the free-loving, warm-hearted Mamie Thurman who knew too much.It was the height of the Depression, and America saw the lowest numbers recorded on the stock market exchange. Prohibition was in full swing, and speakeasies and gambling houses permeated the town of Logan. On Wednesday, June 22nd, 1932, a berry picker found Mamie Thurman's body on the side of a mountain. Her throat had been slashed. While investigating, police found that Mamie had been living a double life. A life that was deemed immoral by most of the town. Clarence Stephenson, a black "odd jobs man," would be found guilty of the murder of Mamie Thurman and sentenced to life in prison, where he claimed his innocence until the day he died.To this day, many think Clarence Stephenson is innocent, and Mamie's murder is still unsolved. 280. Fatal Mistake: Margo Compton Murders
Today we are headed to Laurelwood, Oregon where we meet a young woman named Margo Compton. Margo grew up in Solano County, California. She was a bright child who made good grades and had good friends. Things started to change for Margo. Margo ended up getting married in August of 1969 to Doug Compton at just 16 years old. At first, all seemed good in their marriage. Things changed when Doug met new friends from the Nomads motorcycle club, an offshoot of the Hell’s Angeles. When Margo got pregnant, the violence began. This led to them both doing drugs and it was rumored that Doug often beat Margo. Doug started hanging out increasingly with the bikers and less at home. In July 1977, Margo testified in a California criminal case against a high-ranking member of the Hell’s Angels. This would be a fatal mistake. 279. Under the Radar: The Murder of Pamela Maurer
On a frigidly cold night in 1976, in a western suburb of Chicago, sixteen-year-old Pamela Maurer was hanging out at her friend’s house in Woodridge, Illinois. Around 9:45 p.m., Pam decided she needed a pick-me-up and told her friends she was heading out to get a soda. Pam put on her plaid coat and headed out into the frozen night, her breath billowing and catching on the wind. She pulled her coat close and made her way through the snow-covered neighborhood. When Pam did not return to her friend's house that night, none of her friends were all that worried. After all, her curfew was 10:00 p.m., and they assumed she went straight home after buying her soda. But Pam never got her soda. She never made it home, either. She would be found early the next morning when a county road commissioner came across her body lying frozen in the snow.It would take forty years to find Pamela Maurer's killer. However, the case doesn't end there. In fact, investigators found that it was just getting started. 278. The Bloody Footprints: Lauren DeWise and Ashley Van Hemert
On the morning of January 7, 2018, at 9:25 a.m., a chilling call was made to the 911 dispatch in Belgrade, Montana. A distressed woman reported that her neighbor had just come to her home in a panic, explaining she had returned to her residence to discover her two roommates had been shot. One roommate, she believed, was gravely injured but still clinging to life. Terrified, the neighbor had fled the scene and sought refuge, desperately asking for help. Law enforcement officers were immediately dispatched, though they had no idea what they were walking into. The initial report indicated that one female was dead and another, a 30-year-old, was wounded and unconscious. Recognizing this may be a difficult scene, the first responding officer requested backup as he approached the scene. Upon arrival, the officer was met by a visibly shaken woman—the roommate who had gone to her neighbor for help, now standing before him, clearly distraught. She was the third resident of the home, the one who had just witnessed the aftermath of what appeared to be a horrifying crime within her own home. 277. The Kalamazoo Uber Killer: Jason Dalton
On Saturday, February 20th, 2016, Matt called for an Uber driver around 4:00 in the afternoon in Kalamazoo, Michigan. When the Uber driver arrived at about 4:20 p.m., Matt noticed a dog in the backseat..The Uber driver began driving recklessly, ignoring stop signs and driving into the median. He sped into an oncoming traffic lane, blew through a stop sign, and sideswiped a Ford Taurus. But outwardly, the driver acted like nothing was wrong. Matt was terrified. “Dude, you just hit that car!” he yelled at the driver. But the driver just said, “I didn’t hit anything.” In the back seat, the family dog lunged for the floorboard where she stayed. Matt begged him to stop the car, but the driver wouldn’t. Matt continued to plead with the driver for the next few minutes to let him out. The man said, “Don’t you need a ride to your friend’s house?” Matt yelled, “Not anymore! Let me out! Let me out!” But still, the driver ignored his pleas. Finally, the driver pulled onto Iroquois Trail and asked, “Which one is your friend’s house?” Matt took that opportunity to jump out of the car and run. A couple was sitting outside having a cigarette break and saw what happened. They immediately called 911. According to the woman, the 911 operator blew her off. By the end of the night, that Uber driver would go on to kill six people and severely injure 2 more. 276. Who Killed Tammy Zywicki?
On Sunday, August 23, 1992, Tammy Jo Zywicki, a 21-year-old college student, had just dropped off her 19-year-old brother, Daren, at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. The siblings had been traveling from the East Coast, and Tammy was eager to return to college. During their journey, the car, a white 1985 Pontiac T1000, had been experiencing issues, requiring frequent stops to add oil or water. After staying the night, Daren advised Tammy to monitor the vehicle closely on her journey back to college and pull over to a rest area if it acted up, especially given the day's heat. But if the door was open, he was supposed to take the paper inside and deliver it to them directly. However, Mary and Fred were away on this particular day. They’d gone out on a visit. Carl noticed the door was open, so he stepped inside the house to deliver the paper, as he was supposed to.Around 5:30 p.m., a friend of the cousins stopped by. The door was open; he walked in and found Carl Bridgewater’s dead body on a settee in the sitting room. Was it a robbery gone wrong?Four men were charged with the murder of Carl Bridgewater after police obtained a false confession. 274. Awash in Forgiveness: The Murder of Liz Reiser
It is May 24, 2000, and we are going to Tuscarawas County in Ohio to New Philadelphia. It is exactly what you think of when you say small-town America, with lots of farmland and friendly people. Elizabeth Reiser who goes by Liz is a 17-year-old high school student who is looking forward to graduating and finding out all that life has to hold for her. Her good friend 18 year old Brandi Hicks asked Liz to come over and stay the night with her. On this day Brandi who was in the school choir was going to the choir banquet and wanted Liz to go with her. Even though it was a school night, her mother relented and said yes. That evening, the two friends visited a video store in New Philadelphia after the choir banquet to rent some videos for a movie night. When they left the store and started to get into the car, a man approached them. The man claimed he had no means of getting home and asked the girls for a ride, telling them he lived nearby. The girls hesitated and told them they really needed to get home. The man then offered them $20 as an incentive. The girls did not want to give this stranger a ride, but he urged them to, and they relented. They were young, naive, and always looked for the best in people. After all, he only needed to go across town and then they could go back and watch the movie they had rented. Neither Brandi nor Liz would ever get to watch that movie. 272. Someone Has To Go: The Murder of Stephanie Neiman
It is just after 10:30 p.m. on June 3, 1999, and we go to 23-year-old Bobby Bornt's home in Perry, Oklahoma. He sleeps on the couch, and his 9-month-old baby boy sleeps in a nearby room. Suddenly, a loud noise startled him awake. Three men entered the house after kicking in the front door. The three strangers beat Bobby mercilessly, but not all were strangers; Bobby recognized 23-year-old Clayton Locket as the tattoo artist who had recently done some artwork on him. The other two men were 26-year-old Shawn Mathis and Clayton’s 17-year-old cousin Alfonzo Lockett. Clayton wielded a shotgun, which he used to strike Bobby repeatedly. After the brutal beating, the attackers bound Bobby's hands behind his back with duct tape, gagged him, and left him on the couch. They then proceeded to ransack the house in search of drugs. What started as a “teach him a lesson” would end with a vicious murder on not just this warm June night but yet another murder in 2014 in what some experts would deem the most inhumane. 270. Kingpin: Dustin Honken
Today’s case takes us to Mason City, Iowa. It's July 25, 1993, and like most school-aged kids, summer is the reward after being stuck in a classroom for nine months. Six-year-old Amber Duncan was no different. After an afternoon of playing on a Slip 'n Slide with her best friend, Brittney, Amber headed home around 3 PM, still wet from a day of fun in the water. As the little girl waved goodbye to her best friend, no one could have known it would be the last time she'd be seen. But Amber wasn’t the only one to go missing. What followed were years of agonizing questions and desperate searches. This is one of the most disturbing cases I've ever covered, and the man at the center of it all is a real-life Walter White. 269. Behind the Billboards: The Murder of Kathy Page
On a warm, partly cloudy night in Vidor,(ViE Dur) Texas, a newspaper boy, up early for his route, noticed that a black 1991 Mercury sedan was pitched forward in the ditch just off Interstate 10. The ditch was located between West Bolivar and the freeway access road. He immediately called the police to report the vehicle and that he was pretty sure there was a body in the front seat. When the police arrived on the scene at West Bolivar and I-10, they immediately saw that there was a body of a woman sitting behind the steering wheel of the car. Her body was upright, back against the seat, and her head was turned toward the right, slightly nestled against the headrest. Her feet were pulled back toward the seat, and she wasn’t wearing a seatbelt. When officers called out, “Ma’am?” she did not respond. They checked for a pulse and found that she was dead. The woman’s purse and ID were sitting upright on the car's floorboard, but the police already knew who she was. Kathy Page was the wife of Steve Page, whom Detective Ray Mosely had known for most of his life. This murder inspired the Oscar-winning movie Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, which Starred Frances McDormand, Woody Harrelson, Sam Rockwell, and Peter Dinklage.Join Jen and Cam as they discuss "Behind the Billboards: The Murder of Kathy Page."If you have any information on the murder of Kathy Page, please call 1-800-252-TIPS to contact Texas Crime Stoppers, or you can submit a tip to Crime Stoppers online at crimestoppers.com. 268. All I Want To Do Is Kill: The Collier Murders
Today, we are headed to Riverdale, Georgia, on August 2, 2004, where the Fayetteville Sheriff’s office gets a call from a 16-year-old named Sara Polk, who informs them that there had been a murder or two, to be exact, and proceeds to give them the address of the location where the killing had occurred. Det Bruce Jordan takes the call and arrives on the scene to find two people savagely murdered. The first victim, 74-year-old Carl Collier, was located in the kitchen, which had blood spatter everywhere. Walking through to discover the next victim, investigators see a small bloody barefoot print on the floor. The print would lead them to the basement stairs. Detectives make their way down the stairs, where they see the second victim, 73-year-old Sarah Collier, at the bottom of the staircase. The scene was bloody and brutal. It was clear that the perpetrator was violent and skilled in murder. 267. The Only Murderer In The Building: Joanna Yeates
Greg stared at his phone and wondered why Joanna, his girlfriend and flatmate, wasn’t answering his calls. Greg had spent the weekend with his family in Sheffield, U.K., which was about four hours north of Bristol, where he shared the apartment with Joanna. Maybe she was just busy. It was, after all, the weekend before Christmas. But still, it wasn’t like her to not reply to him at all. Could her phone be dead? If it was, it had been dead all weekend because she hadn’t responded to his calls or texts since before 8:00 p.m. on Friday.“Joanna?” he called out as he entered. But he got no answer. Her purse was there. The keys were there, and a bottle of cider sat on the counter. It was half full. Where was she? He called her cell phone again, calling her name and looking in the closets. He stopped. Her cell phone was ringing from inside the flat. “Joanna!?” he called out again. Any hope he had that Joanna was somewhere in the apartment was dashed as he realized the phone was ringing inside her coat pocket. The temperatures had not reached above freezing the whole weekend. Now he was really worried; Joanna wouldn't have left without her coat. Now he was really worried. With a sinking feeling in his gut, he called the police.Join Cam and Jen as they discuss "The Only Murderer In The Building: Joanna Yeates."Thank you to our team:Written and researched by Lauretta AllenListener Discretion by Edward October from OctoberpodVHSExecutive Producer Nico Vitesse of The Inky Paw PrintSources:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Murder_of_Joanna_Yeateshttps://www.theguardian.com/uk/2011/oct/28/joanna-yeates-case-vincent-tabakhttps://www.walesonline.co.uk/lifestyle/tv/senseless-murder-joanna-yeates-how-22641648https://www.thesun.co.uk/news/16063153/who-joanna-yeates-how-did-she-die/https://youtu.be/_HMIM8ScKt0si=AHLbnVKa5dHE7befhttps://youtu.be/LXMixkwtjYgsi=ZBgI3VsBsel_Glm4https://youtu.be/K1My3HfOuVo?si=9EzfIq43taP5wpKlhttps://www.newspapers.com/image/754124703/match=1&terms=%22Joanna%20Yeates%22https://www.newspapers.com/image/723901797/match=1&terms=%22Joanna%20Yeates%22https://www.newspapers.com/image/723910638/match=1&terms=%22Joanna%20Yeates%22 Learn more about your ad choices. 266. The Big Lie: The Murder of Sara Tokars
Today's case takes us to Marietta, Georgia. The book centered on this case was one of the first true crime books I had read, and it has always stuck with me. The book Secrets Never Lie: The Death of Sara Tokars- A Southern Tragedy of Money, Murder, and Innocence Betrayed is by R. Robin McDonald. It is November 29, 1992, and Thanksgiving weekend has just ended. 39-year-old Sara has been visiting with her parents and her sisters in Bradenton, Florida, for the holiday weekend, but it was time for her and her two boys, 6-year-old Ricky and 4-year-old Mike load up the Toyota SUV to make the 9-hour trek back home to Marietta Georgia, an affluent suburb of Atlanta. After the three had departed, Sara’s husband Fred called the parent's home to inquire if they were on the road yet. Fred, who had been there earlier, had departed earlier as he had a meeting with a client that he couldn’t miss. Sara’s father, Dr John Ambrusko, had answered the call from Fred and told him they they had just departed. It was almost 10 pm when Sara and the boys pulled into her garage. Sara started to unload the car as one of the boys had fallen asleep in his car seat. As she was unloading, a strange man came out of the darkness. The man, who was carrying a sawed-off shotgun, forced Sara and little Ricky back into the car. What happened next is what nightmares are made of, what mothers fear most, and is proof that true evil exists. 264. Steelton Serial Killer: Joe Miller
Former Dauphin County Chief Detective Thomas Brennan’s phone rings between 3 am and 4 am from a responding officer requesting assistance on a crime scene. When the detective arrives, he notices a car pulled close to a ditch. Brennen, who received training at the FBI Behavioral Science Unit during his tenure with the state police, knew immediately what he was dealing with when he arrived at the Conrail crime scene. After Brennan asks the officer for details, the officer explains that a Conrail train security guard had stumbled onto a man attacking a woman. The man was startled and he ran off. Thankfully the victim was injured but alive so he called for police and waited with her until help arrived. Detective Brennan noted that the vehicle’s trunk was open and inside was what many would call a “kit” such as rope, and duct tape, as in things to help someone kill or at least bind another person. Outside the car on the ground were plastic mats, seemingly to cover the ground inside the ditch. It was now clear to Brennan that this man had planned to kill his victim, put her in that ditch, and drive away. What was also clear to the detective was that this was not this man’s first time killing someone, he had done it before and he knew what he was doing. 263. 1 in 31 Billion: Krystal Naab
In the summer of 1991, Krystal Naab was sixteen years old. She lived in a mobile home in Ramsey, Illinois, with her mother and two siblings. She spent time with her boyfriend, whom she had plans to marry, and hung out with her friends. Everyone described Krystal as a genuinely sweet person.July 23rd was shaping up to be a scorcher, and by 7:30 a.m., it was already warm and humid. Since one of Krystal's chores was to mow the lawn, her brother Curtis woke her up before he left for work. He reminded her that it would be hot and that she needed to cut the grass while it was still cool outside. Curtis then headed out the door to do landscaping work for his uncle, unaware of the horror he would later return to.When Curtis arrived home at 4 p.m., he found Kyrstal lying face-down on the floor in a pool of blood just inside the entrance to the trailer. She had been stabbed 81 times with a pair of scissors the family kept in a china cabinet in the living room.A small, white truck was seen by neighbors in Krystal's driveway that day from 10 a.m. to3 p.m., so police thought she must have known her killer. When they asked Curtis if he knew anyone with that type of truck, he immediately came up with a name.Thank you to YA-MAN USA for sponsoring this week's episode. Special: The Unexplained Death of Leanne Davidson Beck
*Content Warning: This episode deals with domestic violence that may be disturbing to some of our listeners. If you or someone you love needs help, please call the National Domestic Abuse Hotline at 1-800-799-7233 (SAFE) or visit their website at https://www.thehotline.org/. Thank you to Jessi and Kristin for speaking with us about their friend Leanne.Leanne Davidson Beck was known for being fiercely independent, tenacious, and kind. She had a good heart, and she was loved by everybody who knew her. Leanne was a ‘go-getter,’ and her friends say she’d always be the one encouraging them to get up and do fun things instead of sitting around bored. She could always find the positive in bad situations, and she was always giggling. Leanne was an only child, so she made lots of friends throughout her life who she remained close to and treated like family. When Leanne met a man who Leanne fell in love with, her friends and family were excited for her as she would finally get what she had always wanted: a loving, happy family. That excitement would soon turn into concern. At 3:07 am on the 29th of August 2021, Leanne’s husband made a panicked call to 911, stating that his wife had vomited and was not breathing. When paramedics arrived, they noted that Leanne’s eyes were fixed, and they were unable to locate a pulse. 262. The Murders of Tara Sue Huffman and Christopher Meyer
On August 7, 1995, in Aroma Park, Illinois, 9-year-old Christopher Meyer approached his mom, Mika Moulton, asking for permission to visit the Aroma Park boat launch by the Kankakee River. Christopher, who spent his summers with his mother but resided with his father, Jim Meyer, in Walla Walla, Washington, during the school year, was eager to explore. Mika permitted him to go but set a curfew, instructing him to return home by 5 pm. When 5 o'clock came and went, Mika began to worry. She went out to search for Christopher but was unsuccessful so she returned home to phone the police and report Christopher missing. At the time, no one knew it but Christopher was not this person’s first victim. 261. Mommy Dearest: The Murder of Jerry Heimann
In April 2001, Jerry Heimann's son, Greg, had come to Washington State to visit his father. When his father didn't pick him up from the airport, he grew concerned. When he arrived at his father's home, and there was no answer, he broke into the house. Jerry wasn't there, and neither were most of Jerry's belongings. As he made his way into the dining room, he found an 89-year-old grandmother, Evelyn, and an Alzheimer's patient slumped in her wheelchair. She had been left alone, starving. Greg called 911.When police asked the neighbors if they had seen Jerry, they said they hadn’t seen anyone at the residence after the live-in housekeeper and elder helper, Barbara Opel, had backed a U-Haul into Jerry’s driveway, packed it full of things from Jerry’s house, and left. Soon, police knocked on Barbara Opel's hotel room door, asking her, her children, and their friends to come down to the station to answer some questions about the whereabouts of her employer, 64-year-old Jerry Heimann. Barbara spun a story of how Jerry was dying of terminal prostate cancer, and he was just finished with this world. He’d given her all his earthly possessions, and she had no idea where he was. Nobody else talked to the police. They did not betray Barbara. But eleven-year-old Derek did. When the police asked him if he knew where Jerry was, he simply said, “Yes. He’s dead.”Join Cam and Jen as they discuss. "Mommy Dearest: The Murder of Jerry Heiman"Thank you to YA-MAN USA for sponsoring this week's episode. 260. The Scorecard Killer: Randy Kraft
In the early hours of May 14, 1983, two California Highway Patrol officers pulled over a suspected drunk driver on the San Diego Freeway in Mission Viejo, California. Instead of staying in his vehicle, the driver jumped out, pouring the contents of a beer bottle onto the road as he exited. His disheveled appearance caught the officers' attention as he approached their patrol car. The officers asked for the man’s driver’s license, and he readily admitted that he had been drinking beer, but he claimed to be sober. Sergeant Michael Howard approached the vehicle and noticed a man slumped in the passenger's seat, partially obscured by a jacket, with empty beer bottles strewn around his feet. A folding knife was visible on the driver's seat. Howard tapped on the window, but there was no response. The man was unconscious and had no shoes on. His pants were unzipped, with his genitals hanging out of his pants. The officer attempted to find a pulse, but there was none. A closer look at the man indicated that the man had been strangled. This standard DUI arrest just changed to murder, but this is far from the only murder this man would commit. 259. Wolf in Priest's Clothing: Irene Garza
All considered twenty-five-year-old school teacher and beauty queen Irene Garza to be a “devout” Catholic. She attended daily mass at Sacred Heart Church in McAllen. There was nothing pretentious or fake about Irene, and she lived her faith. Being good to others was part of her life’s mantra. She told a friend of hers that she found strength and comfort from her daily communion, so it was only natural that she would go to confession that Saturday evening before Easter. In fact, her family said that Irene attended confession every Saturday, whether she needed to or not.Irene arrived for confession around 7:00 p.m., entered one of the confessionals, and seemingly disappeared. Five days after she went missing, on April 21st, 1960, the body of Irene Garza was found floating in the 2nd Street irrigation canal, just three miles from the Sacred Heart church where Irene was last seen. Police only had one suspect in mind for her murder. He was the last person to see Irene the night she left. In fact, he heard her last confession. His name? 257. Somebody Knows: Annie McCarrick & The Vanishing Triange
Annie McCarrick, an American living in Ireland, left her home on March 26, 1993, and vanished into thin air. Her father, John McCarrick, said, “It’s as if somebody came along and just vacuumed her up off the planet.” It's been thirty-one years since Annie was last seen. Many theories have been suggested and investigated in Annie’s disappearance. One is that Annie was abducted and murderedby a total stranger. And for most people, this theory seemed the most plausible for decades. The reason for that is because of the other women who have gone missing in eastern Ireland, in an area that is known as the Vanishing Triangle.Join Cam and Jen as they talk about 'Someone Knows: Annie McCarrick & The Vanishing Triangle".Thank you to YA-MAN USA for sponsoring this week's episode. 255. Never A Marine: Krystal Tobias, Laura Hobbs & Amanda Snell
It was a cold and snow-covered morning in February 2010 when Thomas and Lynn Love decided to take the scenic route to Woodbridge, a suburb of Alexandria, Virginia. The area had recently been pummeled with snow, not once but three times that month, leaving record-breaking accumulations across the Washington, D.C. area. They drove by Prince William Forest and turned east onto Minnieville Road. The area is a sleepy suburb, with wide open roads interspersed with the occasional subdivision or neighborhood. However, large parts are still fields and woods, so the deer often play dodgeball in the traffic. So, Thomas drove more cautiously than usual. As their vehicle approached Alps Road, Thomas saw something move. He pulled over and got out of the car. When his wife realized what they were looking at, she, too, got out of the vehicle. It was a woman, half-dressed, covered in slush and snow and blood, stumbling toward them. She was scraped from the knees down, her face pitted with tiny red dots, and the whites of her eyes were reddish-purple. Shivering, she said in a hoarse whisper, “I’ve been raped and beaten. Where’s Lisa? Is she alive?” Lynn wrapped the woman in a blanket, put her in the car, turned up the heat, and then called 911.There was no way at that moment that the Loves could fully comprehend that they had just played a small part in catching a murderer, freeing a wrongfully imprisoned man from jail, and bringing closure to three families, all by saving the life of the half-frozen woman now seated in their backseat.Join Jen and Cam as they discuss "Never A Marine"Thank you to our team:Written and researched by Lauretta AllenListener Discretion by Edward October from OctoberpodVHSExecutive Producer Nico Vitesse of The Inky Paw PrintSources:Complete list of sources on Our True Crime Podcast websiteArticle written by Harry Jaffe that Jen mentioned.https://www.washingtonian.com/2012/09/11/predator-in-the-ranks-inside-a-real-life-ncis-murder-case/ https://caselaw.findlaw.com/court/us-4th-circuit/1872283.html https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jorge_Avila-Torrezhttps://www.oxygen.com/crime-time/jorge-avila-torrez-ex-marine-sentenced-100-years-for-murder-laura-hobbs-krystal-tobiashttps://www.washingtonpost.com/crime-law/2018/09/19/convicted-va-killer-already-facing-death-penalty-admits-slaying-two-girls-illinois/ Learn more about your ad choices. 252. Wild Child: Evan Ebel
Commerce City, Colorado, is a working-class community with a higher-than-average crime rate. On March 17, 2013, Nate Leon embarked on a journey to Domino's Pizza around 10:45 a.m. Nate, a devoted father of three and a full-time employee at IBM, also worked weekends at Domino's to supplement his income. On that particular day, Domino's received a call requesting a pizza delivery to an unspecified intersection. The employee informed the caller that an exact address was needed for delivery, prompting the caller to hang up abruptly. Minutes later, the caller phoned back, asking for a pizza delivered to a truck stop in North Denver. Although such requests were not their standard practice, the manager made an exception after the caller explained he was stranded at the truck stop, awaiting a tow truck. At 4’ 11” tall, Teresa was known as a “little dynamo.” She was intelligent, abrupt, forceful, and, above all, caring. She always wore high heels, and she always spoke in an urgent manner. Nothing was ever blasé when it came to Dr. Sievers. The four members of the Sievers family took a short trip to Connecticut for a family reunion, leaving on Friday, June 26th. Teresa decided to cut her visit short and head back to Florida to prepare for her workload the next week. There was no point in making Mark or their daughters cut their visit short, so she took a solo flight home. Mark dropped her off at LaGuardia Airport in New York City. It was the last time he would see her alive.Thank you to our team:Written and researched by Lauretta AllenListener Discretion by Edward October from OctoberpodVHSExecutive Producer Nico Vitesse of The Inky Paw PrintSources:https://www.aetv.com/real-crime/why-teresa-sievers-florida-physician-and-mother-of-two-was-bludgeoned-to-deathhttps://winknews.com/2022/06/29/teresa-sievers-convicted-killer-jimmy-rodgers-claims-innocence-plans-to-file-for-new-trial/https://winknews.com/2023/03/10/teresa-sievers-convicted-killer-jimmy-rodgers-files-second-appeal/https://www.mirror.co.uk/news/real-life-stories/husbands-chilling-plot-kill-wife-21712683https://www.news-press.com/story/news/crime/2022/12/27/mark-sievers-files-motion-after-death-row-appeal-denied/69729001007/https://winknews.com/2022/11/17/florida-supreme-court-rejects-mark-sievers-appeal-of-murder-conviction/https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5tk4LwJXXT0&ab_channel=48Hourshttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PkvUEiQUtQY&ab_channel=TrueCrimeDailyhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gktAx68hsGE&ab_channel=Law%26CrimeNetwork Learn more about your ad choices. It is March 25, 1987, and police are about to enter a run-down home on North Marshall Street. Even though officers were told what they were about to encounter, there was no way anyone could ever prepare for what they saw. The smell hit them first before they even got into the residence. Officers were gagging as they made their way inside, trying desperately to concentrate on the task at hand. A sign outside the home indicated that it was a place of worship, claiming to be the United Church of the Ministries of God, but it was far from that: it was a severely demented man’s torture chamber. 249. Speedboat Killers: The Deaths of Charlotte Brown & Nancy Manni
Sometimes, being in the wrong place at the wrong time can have deadly consequences. Sometimes, it's not just the place that's the problem; it's the who that you're with. In the two cases we discuss in this episode, neither of these men intended to kill their victims. They did not set out that morning to take the life of another human being. Nor did they gain anything from the demise of their victims. But they were responsible for their deaths all the same. The first case is in London, England, where twenty-four-year-old Charlotte "Charli" Brown from Essex had been looking for love on Tinder for some time but had had no luck. She wasn't interested in having a good time; she was looking for a long-term relationship. Before long, she began talking to a thirty-year-old web designer named Jack Shepherd. On December 8th, 2015, a Tuesday night, Jack took Charlotte to a restaurant on the 32nd floor and wined and dined her. Everything was going well until Charlotte was killed in an accident involving Jack Shepherd's speedboat. The second case is a request from Jenn K on behalf of her mother. Thirty-one years ago, on August 30th, 1993, the body of a 33-year-old Nancy Lynn Manni was found floating in the Chesapeake Bay just 250 yards from the Cove Point Lighthouse in Cove Point, Maryland. Nancy had lacerations on the back of her legs and buttocks, which were most likely made from a propeller. The coroner felt that Nancy had been alive and trying to swim away when she was run over by a boat. It would take years and being featured on Unsolved Mysteries to discover who was responsible for Nancy's death.Join Cam and Jen as we discuss 'The Speedboat Killers: The Deaths of Charlotte Brown & Nancy Manni.'Seeker's Notes sponsored this week's episode.Whenever you need a break from your day, you need to try Seeker's notes. 248. Innocent Victims: Eastburn Murders
Katie Eastburn had posted a classified advertisement in a local newspaper catering to the military community near Pope Air Force Base and Fort Bragg to sell their English setter, Dixie. At the time, Katie's husband Gary, an Air Force captain, was away attending a squadron officer's school in Alabama, leaving her at home with their three young children. The couple had met twelve years prior at a singles' softball game, and Gary vividly remembers her powerful impact on him, saying, "It was like somebody hit me between the eyes with a ball-peen hammer. I was madly in love with her." They tied the knot in 1975, and Katie became pregnant three years later. In 1983, the Air Force relocated Gary and his family to Pope Air Force Base, where he served as air traffic control chief. When Gary proposed the idea of moving to England, Katie had some reservations; however, her passion for horses played a significant role in her decision, and after Gary assured her that she and their daughters would have ample opportunities to ride in the English countryside, she agreed to the move. Gary typically made Saturday morning calls to check in with Katie while he was away, but when he tried to reach her on Saturday, May 11, she didn't pick up, and he wasn't overly concerned yet. He tried repeatedly that day to reach Katie, but the calls went unanswered. When a neighbor noticed the newspapers were piling up, he looked in a window and made a gruesome discovery. Home of Sun Studios and Graceland, it’s often referred to as the birthplace of rock-n-roll. So, it might surprise some people to find a little hotspot, an inconspicuous-looking (in kun spic yoo us) building, where the Latin beats pulse through the crowd of dancers. They go there for the salsa dancing with its fast, syncopated celebration of life. Dancers are bathed in pink and purple lights and sweat the night away.It was there, in that little rumba room, where Heather Palumbo-Jones would spend one of her last happy nights on earth, wearing a brand-new dress and a big beaming smile. She danced for three hours with one of her best friends, something she might not have even been able to do just a year or two earlier. 246. The Leaf Killer: Matthew Hoffman
It is 4 pm on Thursday, November 11, 2010, in Mt. Vernon, Ohio, when a phone call comes from police. On the line is Valerie Haythorn, manager of the nearby Dairy Queen, who is concerned that her employee 32 year- 32-year-old Tina Herrmann, has not shown up to work today or the previous day. This was very unlike Tina’s character, who has always been dependable. Valerie tells the police she is so worried she goes to Tina’s house to check on her. She is there as she is phoning the police. She informs police that she went inside the house via a rear window. Tina lives in the home with her two children, 13-year-old Sarah and 11-year-old Kody, and her live-in boyfriend. She informs officers that there is blood everywhere. The officer tells her to stay outside, and they are on their way. Once officers are on the scene, they encounter a blood bath. The problem is that although blood was everywhere, there were no bodies. It was as if the family had disappeared. 245. The Happening: West Nickel Mines Massacre
***This episode talks about the school shooting at West Nickels Mines Amish School. If you are sensitive to this subject, you may want to skip this one. ***Jen had points where her voice cracked and tightened as this topic is very difficult for her, so please bear with her.On October 2, 2006, the sun peeked over the horizon at 7:05 a.m. in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, bathing the green, undulating hills in a warm glow. It should have been a perfect day filled with friendship and laughter. Instead, this day would be remembered for the heartbreak and chaos that the community endured. It would also be remembered as when a small group displayed incredible compassion and benevolence. In fact, the day showed the entire range of human behavior, from the utterly vile to the impossibly divine. That morning, children filed into the one-room schoolhouse, excited for the day to begin. Boys and girls, ages 6 to 13, took their seats. Their teacher, twenty-year-old Emma Mae Zook, was also excited to begin her day. Her family was thrilled that she decided to become a teacher, and that day, some of them, her mother, two adult sisters, and a friend had accompanied her to school. They wanted to watch Emma Mae do her job. This was not unusual for this community. The sign above the chalkboard read: Welcome Visitors. Just one mile away from the West Nickel Mines School, 32-year-old Charles Roberts IV, known as Charlie to his friends, was having a very different morning. Charles put his two older children on the school bus. A neighbor heard Charles call his children back from the bus at the last minute for “one last hug.” The hugs lasted longer than usual, and he said to them, “Remember, Daddy loves you.” He then loaded up his truck with carefully curated supplies and drove to the small one-room schoolhouse so he could "take revenge on God."Join Cam and Jen as they discuss 'The Happening: West Nickel Mines Massacre'Thank you to our team:Written and researched by Lauretta AllenListener Discretion by Edward October from OctoberpodVHSExecutive Producer Nico Vitesse of The Inky Paw PrintSources:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2006_West_Nickel_Mines_School_shootinghttps://abcnews.go.com/GMA/story?id=3678190https://www.newspapers.com/image/199843560/?terms=West%20Nickel%20Amish&match=1https://www.newspapers.com/image/199844055/?terms=West%20Nickel%20Amishhttps://www.newspapers.com/image/199844055/?terms=West%20Nickel%20 Amishhttps://www.newspapers.com/image/554591829/terms=West%20Nickel%20Amish&match=1https://www.newspapers.com/image/554591932/terms=West%20Nickel%20Amish&match=1 Learn more about your ad choices. 244. Soul-Less: The Crimes of Jacob Kinn
We are headed to Bemidji, Minnesota, where firefighters are at the scene of a mobile home fire where 35-year-old single mother Melissa Norby lived. As they worked to put out the fire, they noticed that windows had been blown away from the building by as much as 12 to 15 feet. They determined that the start of the fire seemed to be the primary bedroom. Once inside the home, in the bedroom they locate a gas can that had not burnt up in the fire. What else they find is much more disturbing. They find a body, but the body is underneath a mattress, and both the body and the mattress are severely burned. Furthermore, both were located in the middle of the home, not the bedroom. When firefighters noticed that the body had their hands taped and bound, they contacted the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension. Authorities rule it an arson, but it is clear that there is a homicide as well, but this is just the beginning of this twisted crime.Join Jen and Cam of Our True Crime Podcast as we discuss “Soul-Less: The Crimes of Jacob Kinn.”Promo is by British MurdersListener Discretion is by @octoberpodVHSMusic by our EP @theinkypawprintSources: https://wireofhope.com/prison-penpal-jacob-kinn/https://lptv.org/tag/jacob-kinn/https://www.kare11.com/article/news/jacob-kinn-sentenced-to-52-years-for-murder-kidnapping/89-452234228https://www.twincities.com/2017/06/26/bemidji-man-sentenced-for-raping-5-year-old-girl-strangling-her-caretaker/https://www.imdb.com/title/tt26761622/https://www.11alive.com/article/news/race-against-time-the-search-for-a-missing-5-year-old/85-516024729https://www.cbsnews.com/minnesota/news/jacob-kinn-murder-rape-sentence/https://www.crimeandinvestigation.co.uk/videos/jacob-kinn-monster-who-asked-unthinkable-interrogation-rawhttps://www.cbsnews.com/minnesota/news/search-warrants-bemidji-girls-kidnapping/https://www.bemidjipioneer.com/news/waiting-for-answers-family-of-slain-bemidji-woman-wonders-why-no-arrests-charges-in-her-deathhttps://www.valleynewslive.com/content/news/Doctor-finds-Bemidji-kidnap-suspect-competent-to-stand-trial-410952165.html Learn more about your ad choices. 243. Coffee, Crackers & DNA: The Wichita Falls Serial Killer
This is a listener request from Kari Schaan on our FB discussion page. Thank you Kari!On a cold January night in 1985, just outside Wichita Falls, Texas, a bloodied and naked Toni Jean Gibbs tumbled from an abandoned trolley car where she had just been brutally raped and stabbed. Her attacker, knowing his job was done and that her death was inevitable, had already fled the scene, driving away in Toni’s brand-new Camaro. Stumbling through the dark across the thick and scratchy grass of a north Texas grazing field, Toni, in a state of shock, ran for help. When she could run no further, she stumbled to the ground and pulled herself along on her belly. But there was nobody around to help. There was nothing around for miles. Maybe Toni just wanted to ensure that her body would be found. She wouldn’t be stuck in that rusty heap of metal, rotting away for years, while her family wondered what had happened to her. Finally, when she could crawl no more, 23-year-old Toni Jean rolled over onto her back, looked up at the endless starry sky twinkling above her, and took her last breath. It would be almost a month before her remains were found, and the Wichita Falls police would eventually tie the murder of Toni Gibbs to several other murders in the area, and early DNA science would squash any doubt that it was the technology of the future.
