535 || work clean (book)
EDan Charnas of 'work clean' says - Mise en place is not about making things tidy, it’s not about things looking clean. It’s about being able to work clean, which implies motion. The system has to be returned to order. So it’s not just about creating order, like, “Oh, look how I arranged my desk,” it really is about, “I’m going to move through all these projects, but I’ve also made the commitment to myself that when I’m done with this project I’m going to wrap it up.” I’m either going to deliver it or I’m going to put myself in a position where when I resume it, everything is in a place for me to pick it up. Because that’s going to save me 20 minutes, I can use that 20 minutes to do other kinds of work or I can use that 20 minutes to be with my kid and read him a story. I think being a parent, that also affected my venture into this because that time really means something to me. 529 || a romantic relationship with prep work
Eprep work is a major part of time spent "in the kitchen" Cleaning, slicing, dicing is 90% of the process while sautéing, plating, and enjoying is very minimal in the scheme of things - but if you’re a happy and fulfilled chef its not because you dread the other mise en place - you find the meditative repetitive aspect of it; you build a relationship with the process, and you often do need to ebb into that obsessive place to stay excited about what you’re producing. Like life - if you’re not enjoying the tedious nature of being a human, you really should try to work to change your relationship with that part, since it is so important and such a valuable piece in actually producing the magic.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/make-your-damn-bed. E“Winning is defined differently for each of us but victory for me would be leaving here at peace with myself. I dunno what that is yet. 526 || alone || a lesson in loneliness
EHere's the second set of things I learned from watching the show ALONE: 2. The main thing that makes people give up on this dream of theirs - other than actual starvation or contracting some sickness or some shit, is that they miss home. Isolation is fucking horrible. 3. One Person’s trash is another person’s lifeline. Anything can become a resource or an asset if you are creative, persistent, practical, optimistic, and a decent problem solver. 4. The ability to shift when shit aint working + not getting your ego hurt by a disappointing outcome, can make all the difference in your longevity + the quality of your experience.TUNE IN ON PATREON: www.patreon.com/MYDBpodcastSEE MY FACE + OTHER CONTENT: www.youtube.com/juliemerica GET A MONTHLY NOTE FROM ME: www.makeyourdamnbedpodcast.com TUNE IN ON INSTAGRAM FOR DAILY(ish) QUOTES: www.instagram.com/mydbpodcastluh you. and don't forget to drink your damn water.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/make-your-damn-bed. 525 || alone || a lesson in attitude
EThe most valuable lesson I've learned from binge-watching a bush-whacking show is: 1. Attitude is the number one dictator of success or failure. It’s almost fool proof to assume if one of the contestants is shown mourning their family or losing their cool, or losing their temper, or losing their positive energy around the “mission” that they will give up within the next few days. Whether that be an editing tactic or a real read of human psychology, I couldn’t care less - because it makes sense - as soon as you give up mentally you are almost guaranteeing your inevitable failure. It’s the classic quote, “whether you believe you can or you can not, you’re right.”TUNE IN ON PATREON: www.patreon.com/MYDBpodcastSEE MY FACE + OTHER CONTENT: www.youtube.com/juliemerica GET A MONTHLY NOTE FROM ME: www.makeyourdamnbedpodcast.com TUNE IN ON INSTAGRAM FOR DAILY(ish) QUOTES: www.instagram.com/mydbpodcastluh you. and don't forget to drink your damn water.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/make-your-damn-bed. Tune into that bob ross energy and let it add to your masterpiece. Your curses can become assets with some honing. So, keep fucking going. Don’t give up - just stay calm + redirect that energy into improving the situation at hand instead of sulking about the way it used to be or look or feel. You can create magic when you take what you’ve been handed and view it as a gift + a tool for growth rather than a punishment. Life is hard enough + if we can focus on making those subtle shifts towards positivity, improving the situation with the tools we are supplied.TUNE IN ON PATREON: www.patreon.com/MYDBpodcastSEE MY FACE + OTHER CONTENT: www.youtube.com/juliemerica GET A MONTHLY NOTE FROM ME: www.makeyourdamnbedpodcast.com TUNE IN ON INSTAGRAM FOR DAILY(ish) QUOTES: www.instagram.com/mydbpodcastluh you. and don't forget to drink your damn water.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/make-your-damn-bed. 520 || my superego is a tyrant
EKeeping boundaries with ourselves is CRUCIAL to keeping us happy + safe + productive humans, but bear in mind when things are beneficial regulations meant to enhance your life + experience + the connection with those around you OR if those regulations are more like Constraints that you feel bound to and guilty + shamed about fucking up on. Challenge your self imposed rules + regulations once in a while. I feel like it’s a slippery slope before things become unrealistic standards that mean you’re setting yourself up for failure on a regular basis + consistently breaking the trust you have with yourself with can affect your mental wellbeing. 519 || breakin' the law
EInternal restrictions can be critical boundaries with ourselves, but they are also easy to fall victimized + become restricted by. 517 || when it's time to throw away your hard work
EEmbrace the power of the clean slate - whatever that means to you at this stage in your life. if that means trashing the first attempt, revamping the whole thing, imploding what you thought you knew, donating some old memories, cleaning out your HD, rewriting a first draft, taking time off of a relationship, taking a step back from a job, taking a vacation - whatever you need to do to get a fresh perspective? Do it. Don’t be afraid to zoom the fuck out. It doesn't have to be permanent, either. You can donate or trash or burn, sure; but sometimes the power in setting the bullshit aside + re-setting yourself up with a completely blank canvas can be the difference between a masterpiece and just another piece. 515 || i'm embarrassed to admit this but...
EIt's true. I got the plague + boy it kicked my ass - but the surprising part was NOT the ass kicking. It was the shame. I felt so much shame. Why? I did everything "right" and it didn't matter. Notice the quotes. This shit is a nightmare - there's no moral highground (unless you're deliberating being irresponsible, of course) here as long as you're trying. The shame came from the fact that I didn't want to let anyone down. I hate the idea that I could have a negative effect on anyone else's experience. All this to say - doing the right thing won't always feel good. It sometimes will be very difficult + personally challenging to do the "right thing" at the right time. But you got this. 514 || how to set a sensory boundary
ESocial Interactions can be draining. Here's how to prepare: Take a friend-ventory. Know what friends you need more rest before seeing, or prefer in small groups. Note when you don't vibe with a venue or a group rather than an individual. Plan for recovery time, stretch breaks, bail out strategies, and other things you can do to parse out your experience with overwhelming stimulus. Sometimes, all we need is a quick break or a snack to reset the vibe. Replace FOMO with a lil JOMO - that feeling you get when plans you weren't jazzed about, happen to get cancelled by the other person. Channel that every time you say no. Be well rested, well fed, well hydrated, and in the right mindset before social experiences for best results. 513 || sensory overload
ESensory fatigue: When your brain feels overstimulated with sensory inputs such as noise, lights, visual stimulation, sounds, conversation, etc. We all experience sensory needs + I truly believe we’ve all experienced certain levels of sensory overstimulation in some capacity. Like with everything else in life, everyone of us beautiful humans is unique, which means our triggers are gonna be unique, so while some people are sensitive to all loud noises, some of us are more sensitive to specific tones or voices, we may besensitive to specific sounds like teeth on a fork, some are sensitive to more energetic misalignments, some are sensitive to certain smells, or sensations, like scratchy sweaters or clingy turtlenecks or too much human contact. I suggest: pacing yourself to make it through the workday, shortening your workload, automating, delegating, scheduling, pacing, or planning breaks can help build stamina. Mental breaks can come in the form of safe playlists, meditations, zone out tasks, socialization, disconnecting, walking, anything that encourages a change in focus to restore mental stamina + encourage sustainability.Go easy on yourself as you learn to process this shit. It’s gonna be harder on some days than others.RESOURCES: https://themighty.com/2018/04/sensory-overload-and-sensory-fatigue/ https://thehealthsessions.com/how-to-deal-with-sensory-overload/@Thebraincoach on instagram DONATE IF YOU CAN: https://secure.actblue.com/donate/givetolocalfundsGO AD FREE: www.patreon.com/mydbpodcastSEE MY FACE + OTHER CONTENT: www.youtube.com/juliemerica GET A MONTHLY NOTE FROM ME: www.makeyourdamnbedpodcast.com TUNE IN ON INSTAGRAM FOR DAILY(ish) QUOTES: www.instagram.com/mydbpodcastLUH YOU.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/make-your-damn-bed. 511 || how to deal with manipulative people
E"in coping with manipulation, it’s best to follow four basic principles: Know your rights and your limits; set clear, appropriate boundaries in a respectful and neutral way; recognize and avoid the other person’s efforts to escalate the conflict or muddy the issue; and always make sure to protect your own safety."RESOURCES: https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/i-hear-you/201807/4-ways-deal-manipulative-peoplehttps://www.goodtherapy.org/blog/psychpedia/manipulationDONATE IF YOU CAN: https://secure.actblue.com/donate/givetolocalfundsGO AD FREE: www.patreon.com/mydbpodcastSEE MY FACE + OTHER CONTENT: www.youtube.com/juliemerica GET A MONTHLY NOTE FROM ME: www.makeyourdamnbedpodcast.com TUNE IN ON INSTAGRAM FOR DAILY(ish) QUOTES: www.instagram.com/mydbpodcastLUH YOU.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/make-your-damn-bed. 509 || avoiding the love bomb
ELovebombing: A common manipulation technique is love bombing: "Love bombing" refers to behavior patterns where, at the beginning of the relationship, a partner showers the other with over-the-top attention, gifts, affection, etc. See: Kanye West's truckload of roses gesture...https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/basics/love-bombing: "Genuine affection is mutual and should unfold at a pace that is comfortable for both parties. Love bombing, by contrast, tends to feel one-sided—with one partner showering the other with gifts, praise, and declarations of love—and moves at a pace where one partner feels overwhelmed or as if they’re caught up in a whirlwind. Someone repeatedly crossing stated boundaries—even if they claim to have positive motives for doing so—may also be an indicator of manipulative intentions. Similarly, while it’s normal for new partners to spend a lot of time together, feeling isolated from one’s family and friends because one is spending all their time with a new love interest may suggest that the relationship is falling into unhealthy patterns."Resource/inspiration: https://www.instagram.com/climateresilienceproject/DONATE IF YOU CAN: https://secure.actblue.com/donate/givetolocalfundsGO AD FREE: www.patreon.com/mydbpodcastSEE MY FACE + OTHER CONTENT: www.youtube.com/juliemerica GET A MONTHLY NOTE FROM ME: www.makeyourdamnbedpodcast.com TUNE IN ON INSTAGRAM FOR DAILY(ish) QUOTES: www.instagram.com/mydbpodcastLUH YOU.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/make-your-damn-bed. 508 || how to spot a gaslight

504 || the subtle art of not giving a fuck taught me || part two
EPART TWO - please listen to yesterday's episode before beginning this one. You are responsible for everything that has happened to you in you’re life. You get robbed? Whether you hand your purse over, or run, or choose to do nothing. You are responsible for it. You may not be to blame for the robbery but you are burdened with the responsibilities of the repurcussions. That’s just what life is. It is a series of responsibilities thrust upon our shoulders. How we react and adapt and grow is the only thing we should worry about. The person you marry is the person you will have to argue with. Problems are inevitable. You can control who you choose to face them with. There’s a power in just starting. You want to live a better life? Start reading self help books for 10 minutes a day. 503 || the subtle art of not giving a fuck taught me || part one
EMy lessons from reading Mark Manson's Subtle Art of Not Giving a Fuck: Who you are is defined by what you’re willing to struggle for. It’s not about not giving a fuck, it’s about changing your perspective to only give a fuck about the things that really matter, instead of all the other bullshit. We all have problems. It’s a human condition. It’s just about creating better problems.Happiness is not an ending, it’s merely a side-effect of solving good problems. (Thus, problems are actually critical to us being happy.) It becomes about finding problems you enjoy solving.Being the best at something is an outlier and a nearly impossible thing to strive for. Embrace mediocrity. The more you fail at something, the more successful you become in that thing. Embrace failure. You are always going to be wrong. That’s what growth is. Real success is found in becoming a little less wrong every day.Every problem in history has been had before and will be had again. Maybe not the specific circumstances, but the particular feelings you are feeling has been felt before. You are not special. This should be comforting! It means you’re never alone and historically people know how to rock this problem! 501 || optimism rant || a fundamental right
EThe system may feel shaky, but that's a good thing. The majority of us, want to do the right thing even though the odds are stocked against that mindset. So, that alone, is pretty fricking inspiring to me. Here's some optimistic ranting from a person with high hopes for our country, for the first time in her life. EAll aboard the special EXTENDED 500th episode extrava-gay-nza!!!! I am so proud to finally be in a place that I can both embrace and be proud of my sexuality! It only took 34 year, a few different zip codes, some incredible humans living their most authentic lives (proving we really can do life our own way, as long as we're not getting in the way of anyone else's) and I am so humbled and grateful to be a part of humanity at a time when we're learning to embrace our BEST, most honest selves. Love you all SO MUCH. 499 || how to access those fundamental rights
EThis episode may save lives. Share with anyone you think may need it. https://mayday.health/MAYDAY HEALTH a registered health education nonprofit. Mission to share information about how to access abortion medication in all fifty states. 1. Create mail forwarding address in state with progressive abortion rights. This is typically less than $30. You can do this through iPostal.com, choose a state like Colorado or Illinois that protects abortion rights + choose a local city within it. At checkout, provide contact info + they basically give you a remote private mailing address + you'll receive instructions for how to upload the single page USPS form 1583 that authorizes your NEW address to forward and receive mail on our behalf. Requires a brief online notary call. Anytimemailbox and postscanmail.com are other options mayday health has instructions for on their website linked in comments. Using your new mail forwarding address make an appointment + request pills online with a telehealht visit bc they can typically deliver to any address in states where they operate INCLUDING mail forwarding addresses that can forward that medicine to other states. Financial aid options often available but the cost is usually under $300. 2. Sign up online for an abortion clinic with that new mail forwarding address. Hey Jane offers services in Cali, NY, WA, IL, CO, NM. Carafem in CO, CT, DE, GA, IL, IA, MD, MA, NV, NJ, NM, RI, VT, VA or Choix or Just the Pill are IL, CO, CA. 3. Consult with that telehealth medical provider 4. Receive your unmarked package at your address within five days. 5. Take pills. They’re not plan b - usually mifepristone or pisoprostol = works thorough end of the FIRST trimester (11 weeks) and been FDA approved for decades, leads to LESS hospitalizations than tylenol does. Abortion pills are safe, effective, common, private. 99% of patients have no severe side effects. According to studies they are 98% effective at ending pregnancies during the first trimester. Used in over 54% of the abortions across the US. and some European countries over 90% are done using pills. It’s been used by MILLIONS around the world for the past 30 years. If you need support to self manage you can call or text the miscarraige + abortion hotline at 1-833-246-2632 available 8 am to 11 pm in all continental us time zones + typically can respond within an hour. 495 || before you start that hobby
Ejust invested in the ideal lil shield for my mic + not only is the sound quality an improvement (and easier to keep consistent) but it's also SO CUTE + FUNCTIONAL and inspired me to do so much podcasting magic today. The only thing is, it made me realize how often I was buying the best gear to start new hobbies and then not wanting to ruin them by being bad at them... and you get the picture. 493 || naturally talented (+ naturally weak)
EWho are you when you're not "trying"?We all have some natural abilities and talents and we all have natural weaknesses and traits we may need to improve. That said, we often can't even tell what our most natural tendencies are because they are second nature to us. The automaticity of it all makes it hard to notice, let alone focus on, but it can be so helpful to get to know what your skills + weaknesses are so you can be more connected, comfortable, and in control. 492 || the REAL way to fix imposter syndrome
Eevery time I read something about imposter syndrome, they're all like, "get more confident! limit your negative self talk! change your mindset" but for me, it's not that I am actually insecure - it's that I don't realize everyone else is, too. Next time you're feeling like a fraud, remember: Truck nuts was a 17 million dollar idea... that people fought over. Star Wars Trilogy was unplanned. Lucas thought it would tank so made it up as he went. Paul McCartney doesn't think he's good enough either. You got this. Doubt is normal, but move past it! 489 || fear ain't weak || it's natural (+ often avoidable)
EFear can indicate healthy brain function. It's not weak, it's a good sign that it exists - but we often project shit onto the future and don't even realize we've been walkin' around with a weighted blanket of unhelpful + unwarranted anxiety on our backs. 488 || therapy tip || remix the rehash
EWhen we get caught up rethinking situations that are beyond past... we can help redirect our brain to the present by remixing the toxic thought cycle + imagining the situation with a different "ending" or "climax". Ask yourself to change one thing about the situation, to see if that could potentially change the outcome. Sample remix questions include: The timingYour body patterns and what you did with your bodyWhat you say and how you said itThe location and where it happened The order you did things inSee the extended bonus versions of episodes like this on youtube.com/juliemerica and rate us 5 stars on apple podcasts if you haven't already.
