EThe inspiration for the episode: libraford: I think part of the issue is people assuming that everyone MUST want to move upwards. Like... it's the next logical step for a person to want to move up the chain: from worker to manager, to district manager, eventually owner. But I always think of growth like plants. Aspens grow tall to reach the sun, for sure. But dandelions grow deep, understanding themselves fully so that if some misguided fool tries to uproot them they'd have to try damn hard. And then there's thyme and other creeping plants, which spread themselves out so much that if you chop a part of it off it roots wherever it can find dirt to root in. It's okay not to have lofty dreams. ERemember, being empathetic is a kind way to respond to people’s emotional experiences, but isn’t helpful if we’re not conscious of how that is affecting our own. When we direct all of our attention outward, we become unbalanced + disconnected from our own needs - which makes us less effective at addressing anyone’s needs (our own or someone else’s). It’s easy to become codependent (mirror moods, chameleon your energy to appease, anticipate other people’s needs) and lose sight of your independence out of fear of “upsetting others”. Check in with yourself by asking things like: Am I resentful of other people’s emotions + lack of gratitude, am I having trouble setting boundaries, am I struggling with putting your own emotional wellbeing above my perceived predicted reactions of others, am I unable to communicate clearly so I often resort to passive aggressive comments instead? ESympathy is recognizing + understanding someone else’s situation. Empathy is sharing in it. Sympathy typically focuses more on my personal experience or my own instinctual reaction to your situation, whereas empathy is more based on me feeling into the situation and being there with you, in that experience. To practice healthy empathy, we must be willing to get vulnerable with our feelings without centering ourself in the experience.
