762 || existentially dreading it
EExistential dread is honestly, kinda to be expected?! But there are ways to get out of it. 1. Limit the causations - social media, news, etc. 2. stay in the present by honoring your fight, flight, or freeze response. 3, zoom in so you can eventually zoom out. 759 || deconstruct + rewrite
EAccording to https://positivepsychology.com/narrative-therapy/ We can map our stories through asking: Characteristics and naming or labeling of the problemMapping the effects of the problem throughout each domain of life it touches (home, work, school, relationships, etc.)Evaluation of the effects of the problem in these domainsValues that come up when thinking about why these effects are undesirableThus allowing us to deconstruct + rewrite them to better serve our desired futures. 758 || narrative therapy
EAccording to https://positivepsychology.com/narrative-therapy/ Narrative therapy is a form of therapy that aims to separate the individual from the problem, allowing the individual to externalize their issues rather than internalize them. Reality is socially constructed, which means that our interactions and dialogue with others impacts the way we experience reality.Reality is influenced by and communicated through language, which suggests that people who speak different languages may have radically different interpretations of the same experiences.Having a narrative that can be understood helps us organize and maintain our reality. In other words, stories and narratives help us to make sense of our experiences.There is no “objective reality” or absolute truth; what is true for us may not be the same for another person, or even for ourselves at another point in time (Standish, 2013).WATCH: www.youtube.com/juliemericaGET A MONTHLY NOTE FROM ME: www.makeyourdamnbedpodcast.comBUY SOME MERCH: https://www.teepublic.com/stores/make-your-damn-bed-podcast?ref_id=27657TUNE IN ON INSTAGRAM FOR COOL CONTENT: www.instagram.com/mydbpodcastOR BE A REAL GEM + TUNE IN ON PATREON: www.patreon.com/MYDBpodcastThe opinions expressed by Julie Merica and Make Your Damn Bed Podcast are intended for entertainment purposes only. 756 || photography lessons for everyone
EPeople inherently WANT to love photos of themselves but go in with a very critical filter that makes them expect NOT to like it - which adds a whole nother level of discomfort that can have a tangible effect on the result. To me, the overthinking that happens is very much a metaphor for overthinking any of our insecurities in relationships. We end up nurturing the problem by honoring the insecurity instead of the reality.WATCH: www.youtube.com/juliemericaGET A MONTHLY NOTE FROM ME: www.makeyourdamnbedpodcast.comBUY SOME MERCH: https://www.teepublic.com/stores/make-your-damn-bed-podcast?ref_id=27657TUNE IN ON INSTAGRAM FOR COOL CONTENT: www.instagram.com/mydbpodcastOR BE A REAL GEM + TUNE IN ON PATREON: www.patreon.com/MYDBpodcastThe opinions expressed by Julie Merica and Make Your Damn Bed Podcast are intended for entertainment purposes only. 755 || Reflecting on YOU 2
EThe most important part of the show I think is so chronically overlooked in the breakdowns I have read is that we are constantly hearing about Joe’s crimes through Joe’s perspective. He stalks because he “cares” he kills because he “loves” he lies because he “protects” and the audience is now only attuned to the perpetrators perspective of the crime. If they made this part more clear, maybe we would know to not be so understanding or empathetic with his violence. It’s muddled because we’re stuck watching a violent act, from the violent actor. Violence is never love. Regardless of the root of your intention, if your effect is HARM in any way, physically, socially, psychologically, that isn’t love. Period, point blank, end of story. Violent acts rooted in love are not loving acts. 754 || reflecting on YOU
EIf you have been listening a while, you know I am constantly adding disclaimers so that my messages aren’t misconstrued or taken out of context in a way that can promote harm or danger. That said, it’s nearly impossible to accommodate for every type of perspective that can be taken towards every message. But still, I try. I listen back and try to put myself in the shoes of a more depressed or more angry version of myself and I interpret the message with my worst intention just to ensure I’m not encouraging someone to do something potentially harmful or rash. But regardless of my futile attempts to accommodate all humans at all levels, I recognize the impossibility of this idea. Then I watched the finale of Netflix's YOU and realized just how futile and silly my attempts were...RESOURCES: https://medium.com/@catrinframe/you-season-2-is-joe-goldberg-capable-of-love-netflix-series-9a600300114fWATCH: www.youtube.com/juliemericaGET A MONTHLY NOTE FROM ME: www.makeyourdamnbedpodcast.comBUY SOME MERCH: https://www.teepublic.com/stores/make-your-damn-bed-podcast?ref_id=27657TUNE IN ON INSTAGRAM FOR COOL CONTENT: www.instagram.com/mydbpodcastOR BE A REAL GEM + TUNE IN ON PATREON: www.patreon.com/MYDBpodcastThe opinions expressed by Julie Merica and Make Your Damn Bed Podcast are intended for entertainment purposes only. 752 || functional movement
EI read an article on elderly having trouble sitting, so practice squatting, I say if you’re having trouble sitting practice sitting. Train at it. I’m no physical therapist, and don’t get me wrong, do I believe that if I’m struggling to sit on a toilet I’m also OPTING for wall sits?! Absolutely the fuck not. I’m simply saying as someone who often makes lofty goals when I’m feeling like I need to change, and suddenly shifts personalities when it comes down to actually changing shit… I have spent a lot of time simplifying where I can and it’s really made a difference in my progress. Not to say you shouldn’t learn the squats, and if you progress past the seating and eventually you want to elevate the experience, get that shit moving, but in my opinion, training in the gym is all well and good, but finding movement that is healthy for your body, where your body is at this moment, is even fucking better. THAT is functional to me. 748 || retreat + reset
Eif you’re trying to get out of a funk or like we’ve been discussing: escape the survival mode - there are different things that will work at different times. I think the foundation still stands: 1. IDENTIFY sources and see if you can downsize stress. What can we delegate? What can we improve the process of? What can we switch up for the better? IDENTIFY - REDUCE - RESTRUCTURE - and then if you’re stuck with shit you still don’t wanna do - so REFRAME with gratitude and more positivity if you can. What can we change our perspective on to get more rewarding feedback or wisdom from it. I'm a RETREATER. 745 || getting out of survival mode
EEscaping the cycles of chronic stress... well... sucks. I often want to reach for things that further disconnect me, when in reality, the way out is through connecting more intentionally and deliberately with my current self in what is affecting me, how it's affecting me, and what I NEED, instead of want. 742 || survival mode
EI recently received a message from a listener saying they love the podcast but have been struggling to implement some of the stuff I suggest because they’ve been stuck in survival mode and can’t seem to get out of it, so they suggested I do an episode on how to get out of survival mode. As a person who is very experienced in this department, because I’ve been in and out of my own version of survival mode for a long time, I think it’s important to start by clarifying what I mean when I say ‘survival mode’ RESOURCES: https://www.verywellmind.com/chronic-stress-3145104https://www.health.harvard.edu/staying-healthy/understanding-the-stress-responsehttps://www.stress.org/are-you-a-stress-addicthttps://acceleratedresolutiontherapy.com/are-you-in-survival-mode/#:~:text=Survival%20mode%20is%20another%20term,person%20feels%20unable%20to%20relax.WATCH: www.youtube.com/juliemericaGET A MONTHLY NOTE FROM ME: www.makeyourdamnbedpodcast.comBUY SOME MERCH: https://www.teepublic.com/stores/make-your-damn-bed-podcast?ref_id=27657TUNE IN ON INSTAGRAM FOR COOL CONTENT: www.instagram.com/mydbpodcastOR BE A REAL GEM + TUNE IN ON PATREON: www.patreon.com/MYDBpodcastThe opinions expressed by Julie Merica and Make Your Damn Bed Podcast are intended for entertainment purposes only. EAccording to wiki, A salon is a gathering of people held by an inspiring host. During the gathering they amuse one another and increase their knowledge through conversation. 734 || decision paralysis + how to deal
E(PART 2) What I’ve noticed, is my ability to get stuck in the effort stage of a process - to the point where I can no longer see the process clearly, which leads to inaction. I am so hung up on the idea of struggle, that I struggle to get beyond the idea part. The best way to avoid this is to eliminate extraneous decision making. Limit your daily choices INTENTIONALLY. Where can you delegate, automate, or postpone tasks that don’t need your direct immediate attention? Where can you pre-plan and do some prep-work to avoid these moments that require immediate choices. Our capacity for making “good” decisions is limited based on a ton of factors - including how many decisions we’ve already made that day. 729 || game changers || life lessons finale
E27. Get comfortable in silence. Learn when it’s time to mind your business and when it’s time to speak your mind. You’re allowed to take up space but you’re also allowed to sit back and cease to be perceived. 28. Every single human just wants to feel seen, valued, and loved. Be kind. Be open. Focus on the little moments with people + really listen. That said. Not all people deserves all access to you. You’re allowed to be private. You’re allowed to overshare but you’re also allowed to be private and say shit like “im not comfortable discussing that” or simply “no” 29. Social media is a tool. It’s also a manipulative marketing addiction machine. Be careful with it. Set boundaries and check in with your emotions during and after your usage. 30. Future you appreciates your attention, thoughtfulness, and love more than anyone. Intentionally show yourself the same kindness and attention you show to the people you care most about. 31. The way we treat others is a direct reflection of our internal wellbeing. We tend to project insecurities by identifying things we dislike in others in a way to protect ourselves against what we’ve done to those unhealed or repressed part of ourselves. Same goes for everyone else. Take the time to practice responding with mindfulness rather than reacting with impulse - despite the validity of your reaction, it’s better to approach with less emotion than to regret actions or words that can directly affect the people we’re interacting with. 32. Take care of yourself - parent yourself like a well-loved toddler until you’re confident enough to understand life is a series of ups and downs. Love on yourself with wreckless abandon because at the end of the day - real happiness, contentment, life satisfaction, etc. is an inside job. You’re the only one who knows the key to your magic, luckily you’ve got a lifetime to discover it. 33.Everything we do is rooted in fear or love. Choose love every time. 728 || game changers || life lessons || part V
EMore lessons that took me forever to learn but really made a difference for my mental health:22. Action is the remedy. The key to getting over cycles of worry and rumination and overthinking and fear is to focus on the next best step. Align with what you value most and start small. Consistency > perfection. Failure is part of the process and the best way to get over a fuck up is to focus our attention on something new. 23. Pain, uncertainty, effort are the three unavoidable aspects of reality we will all experience. Becoming adaptable and reflective is the best way to build up our resilience and ability to face things with a positive mind. Problems are inevitable, ideally we can upgrade our problems to better and more enjoyable problems to solve. 24. Shoot your shot. Closed mouths don’t get fed. The squeaky wheel gets the grease. The most effective way to connect with someone is to learn to communicate, so don’t hesitate to speak up when you have shit to say. 25. Nobody knows what the fuck they’re doing. Adults are just babies in grown up costumes. If someone is amazing at their career, they probably suck at relationships, if they have it all on the outside they are typically sad on the inside. Life is hard as hell - you’re not weird for not having a damned clue what the fuck is happening. 26. It’s never too late. Time is a construct. You can slow it down with intentionality or speed it up with mindless actions like doom scrolling. Be mindful with where your attention flows, take as many choices in alignment with your values as you can every single day, and don’t worry about feeling behind. Take time and speak to the 50 somethings who understand they’ve got the rest of their lives ahead of them (to pick up the projects they’ve left or attempt the thing they’ve never been brave enough to attempt) meanwhile there are countless 20 somethings panicked about not having enough time to stress over all the shit they hate doing. Relax. You’ve got time + you can start anytime you damned well please - including right the fuck now. At some point, we have to understand that just because someone isn’t capable of communicating love in a healthy way doesn’t mean they don’t love you. But it also doesn’t mean you have to put up with it. 18. Romantic love is overrated. Smooch your friends, Hold hands, and give long hugs. 19. You’re not better than anyone. Noone is better than you. 718 || when the choring gets boring
EThere are so many times a day that I find myself wanting to do a thing but unable to make myself actually get up to do the thing. And it’s frustrating as hell. When this happens, sometimes I benefit from making the thing as simple and accessible and cut and dry as possible. Other times, though, I prefer the opposite. I find that when I make things a whole ass event - it makes doing them more attractive. Getting enthusiastic about eating vegetables gets a hell of a lot easier when you grill those bad boys real nice, and drizzle them with a nice balsamic. Cleaning is a lot more attractive when your blasting Y2K hip hop hits and your best friend is helping you reorganize your pantry. Walkin the dog becomes less of a chore when it becomes a time to show off my new sneakers or chat with the neighbor about the latest local gossip. This advice isn’t the most efficient advice, in fact it forces you to slow down, and hone in on the most enjoyable part of the process. That said, efficient isn’t always the best way to do things. In my experience, enjoyable will always outweigh efficient.
