735 || salons || a badass history
EAccording to wiki, A salon is a gathering of people held by an inspiring host. During the gathering they amuse one another and increase their knowledge through conversation. These gatherings often consciously followed Horace's definition of the aims of poetry, "either to please or to educate" (Latin: aut delectare aut prodesse).RESOURCE: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Salon_(gathering)WATCH: www.youtube.com/juliemericaGET A MONTHLY NOTE FROM ME: www.makeyourdamnbedpodcast.comBUY SOME MERCH: https://www.teepublic.com/stores/make-your-damn-bed-podcast?ref_id=27657TUNE IN ON INSTAGRAM FOR COOL CONTENT: www.instagram.com/mydbpodcastOR BE A REAL GEM + TUNE IN ON PATREON: www.patreon.com/MYDBpodcastThe opinions expressed by Julie Merica and Make Your Damn Bed Podcast are intended for entertainment purposes only. 734 || decision paralysis + how to deal
E(PART 2) What I’ve noticed, is my ability to get stuck in the effort stage of a process - to the point where I can no longer see the process clearly, which leads to inaction. I am so hung up on the idea of struggle, that I struggle to get beyond the idea part. The best way to avoid this is to eliminate extraneous decision making. Limit your daily choices INTENTIONALLY. Where can you delegate, automate, or postpone tasks that don’t need your direct immediate attention? Where can you pre-plan and do some prep-work to avoid these moments that require immediate choices. Our capacity for making “good” decisions is limited based on a ton of factors - including how many decisions we’ve already made that day. 729 || game changers || life lessons finale
E27. Get comfortable in silence. Learn when it’s time to mind your business and when it’s time to speak your mind. You’re allowed to take up space but you’re also allowed to sit back and cease to be perceived. 28. Every single human just wants to feel seen, valued, and loved. Be kind. Be open. Focus on the little moments with people + really listen. That said. Not all people deserves all access to you. You’re allowed to be private. You’re allowed to overshare but you’re also allowed to be private and say shit like “im not comfortable discussing that” or simply “no” 29. Social media is a tool. It’s also a manipulative marketing addiction machine. Be careful with it. Set boundaries and check in with your emotions during and after your usage. 30. Future you appreciates your attention, thoughtfulness, and love more than anyone. Intentionally show yourself the same kindness and attention you show to the people you care most about. 31. The way we treat others is a direct reflection of our internal wellbeing. We tend to project insecurities by identifying things we dislike in others in a way to protect ourselves against what we’ve done to those unhealed or repressed part of ourselves. Same goes for everyone else. Take the time to practice responding with mindfulness rather than reacting with impulse - despite the validity of your reaction, it’s better to approach with less emotion than to regret actions or words that can directly affect the people we’re interacting with. 32. Take care of yourself - parent yourself like a well-loved toddler until you’re confident enough to understand life is a series of ups and downs. Love on yourself with wreckless abandon because at the end of the day - real happiness, contentment, life satisfaction, etc. is an inside job. You’re the only one who knows the key to your magic, luckily you’ve got a lifetime to discover it. 33.Everything we do is rooted in fear or love. Choose love every time. 728 || game changers || life lessons || part V
EMore lessons that took me forever to learn but really made a difference for my mental health:22. Action is the remedy. The key to getting over cycles of worry and rumination and overthinking and fear is to focus on the next best step. Align with what you value most and start small. Consistency > perfection. Failure is part of the process and the best way to get over a fuck up is to focus our attention on something new. 23. Pain, uncertainty, effort are the three unavoidable aspects of reality we will all experience. Becoming adaptable and reflective is the best way to build up our resilience and ability to face things with a positive mind. Problems are inevitable, ideally we can upgrade our problems to better and more enjoyable problems to solve. 24. Shoot your shot. Closed mouths don’t get fed. The squeaky wheel gets the grease. The most effective way to connect with someone is to learn to communicate, so don’t hesitate to speak up when you have shit to say. 25. Nobody knows what the fuck they’re doing. Adults are just babies in grown up costumes. If someone is amazing at their career, they probably suck at relationships, if they have it all on the outside they are typically sad on the inside. Life is hard as hell - you’re not weird for not having a damned clue what the fuck is happening. 26. It’s never too late. Time is a construct. You can slow it down with intentionality or speed it up with mindless actions like doom scrolling. Be mindful with where your attention flows, take as many choices in alignment with your values as you can every single day, and don’t worry about feeling behind. Take time and speak to the 50 somethings who understand they’ve got the rest of their lives ahead of them (to pick up the projects they’ve left or attempt the thing they’ve never been brave enough to attempt) meanwhile there are countless 20 somethings panicked about not having enough time to stress over all the shit they hate doing. Relax. You’ve got time + you can start anytime you damned well please - including right the fuck now. 726 || lessons that took forever to learn || part IV
ESome more lessons for ya: You’re not doing worse than anyone. We never know where people had leg-ups, and we never know what invisible struggles people are experiencing. Focus on keeping you driveway clean and don’t worry about what’s happening on the other side of the street. People’s responses to your boundaries, wants, needs, values, etc. say more about them than you. But the same goes for your responses. 725 || what i've learned in life || part III
EMy list continued: 16.Giving yourself the love/attention/value you seek from others is the key to being open to actually receiving the love you seek. 17. People show love in many different ways. At some point, we have to understand that just because someone isn’t capable of communicating love in a healthy way doesn’t mean they don’t love you. But it also doesn’t mean you have to put up with it. 18. Romantic love is overrated. Smooch your friends, Hold hands, and give long hugs. 19. You’re not better than anyone. Noone is better than you. Being further ahead than someone doesn’t disqualify their wisdom. We have something to learn from and share with every living being on this planet. EMy list continued: 11. You don’t need to work so hard to be “liked”. Protect your peace, set appropriate boundaries, say no, but be kind + vulnerable + honest. The best people can see authenticity. The best way to be a crowd pleaser is not to be a people pleaser. It’s not your job to “fix” everything.12. Leave shit better than you found it. Taking our time to respect the spaces we are interacting with, improves feelings of gratitude and intentionality. 13. Internal peace is more rewarding and sustainable than happiness.14. Your looks are the least interesting thing about you. 15. Practice pausing before responding. 718 || when the choring gets boring
EThere are so many times a day that I find myself wanting to do a thing but unable to make myself actually get up to do the thing. And it’s frustrating as hell. When this happens, sometimes I benefit from making the thing as simple and accessible and cut and dry as possible. Other times, though, I prefer the opposite. I find that when I make things a whole ass event - it makes doing them more attractive. Getting enthusiastic about eating vegetables gets a hell of a lot easier when you grill those bad boys real nice, and drizzle them with a nice balsamic. Cleaning is a lot more attractive when your blasting Y2K hip hop hits and your best friend is helping you reorganize your pantry. Walkin the dog becomes less of a chore when it becomes a time to show off my new sneakers or chat with the neighbor about the latest local gossip. This advice isn’t the most efficient advice, in fact it forces you to slow down, and hone in on the most enjoyable part of the process. That said, efficient isn’t always the best way to do things. In my experience, enjoyable will always outweigh efficient. 713 || what am i gonna do with my life
EBy checking in with yourself - you can be confident, even in the suffering, that you’re on the right path + doing the best you can.The idea of “Living up to your full potential” is bull shit. You’re already doing that. The thing is - if you want to “live your best life” “no regrets” this bitch, you’re gonna have to get real with what you actually think would fulfill you in the end. And remember, there’s simply not enough time to live up to your full potential. So, this really comes down to getting real with what you want right fucking now. Sure, it can be helpful to think about what accomplishments you’d like in your bag, but it’s more beneficial to think about the emotions you’re seeking in all of this. What do you want to feel? Because maybe in two months your world may open up to something else you never imagined and it can create all those Instead of worrying about if this next job offer is the one or the person you texted has seen your text, put your thoughts into what gives you energy. Put your focus on what fascinates you. What makes you feel like you’re living a full, meaningful life. Use your values, goals, desires, and drive as a compass. Allow those things to guide you. Quit googling for the next best step, just ask yourself, what is someone who loved themself would do? And move from there until you begin to resonate with that. 712 || avoiding the arrival fallacy
EBen-Shahar says that often people who experience the arrival fallacy start off unhappy, and reach for a goal that is supposed to cure their sadness. When they find that success doesn’t fix their unhappiness, not only are they disappointed, but may end up feeling hopeless and depressed. Often, the arrival fallacy only makes unhappiness and mental states worse.RESOURCES: https://www.verywellmind.com/what-is-arrival-fallacy-6561079https://sketchyideas.co/arrival-fallacy/ WATCH: www.youtube.com/juliemericaGET A MONTHLY NOTE FROM ME: www.makeyourdamnbedpodcast.comBUY SOME MERCH: https://www.teepublic.com/stores/make-your-damn-bed-podcast?ref_id=27657TUNE IN ON INSTAGRAM FOR COOL CONTENT: www.instagram.com/mydbpodcastOR BE A REAL GEM + TUNE IN ON PATREON: www.patreon.com/MYDBpodcastThis show is sponsored by BetterHelp. 710 || personal sweet talk
ESit for a second, imagine your dream partner looking you in your eyes and telling you allll that shit you wanna hear. Literally what would they say to you and make you feel seen and heard and valued and loved. Now open your eyes look in the mirror and say that shit to yourself. “One of the best guides to how to be self-loving is to give ourselves the love we are often dreaming about receiving from others. There was a time when I felt lousy about my over-forty body, saw myself as too fat, too this, or too that. Yet I fantasized about finding a lover who would give me the gift of being loved as I am. It is silly, isn't it, that I would dream of someone else offering to me the acceptance and affirmation I was withholding from myself. This was a moment when the maxim "You can never love anybody if you are unable to love yourself" made clear sense. And I add, "Do not expect to receive the love from someone else you do not give yourself.” ― Bell Hooks, All About Love: New Visions WATCH: www.youtube.com/juliemericaGET A MONTHLY NOTE FROM ME: www.makeyourdamnbedpodcast.comBUY SOME MERCH: https://www.teepublic.com/stores/make-your-damn-bed-podcast?ref_id=27657TUNE IN ON INSTAGRAM FOR COOL CONTENT: www.instagram.com/mydbpodcastOR BE A REAL GEM + TUNE IN ON PATREON: www.patreon.com/MYDBpodcastThis show is sponsored by BetterHelp. 708 || when your brain gets numb
EOur brain is designed to make shit easier and easier until it’s no longer taking up much brain power at all. Our brain loves boredom. Boredom means safety. Safety means ease. Ease means peace. Brains love that shit. I think it’s normal to get bored with life, but the fact of the matter is - I have access to the beauty of the world in High definition from the comfort of my couch in a few clicks, I can get cuisines of different cultures for just a few bucks, I don’t even have to talk to anyone. I scroll my phone for hours and consume more information than my cute lil brain can even begin to process. So when brain is accustomed to numbing us to the things we see on a regular basis, and we are seeing “everything” on a regular basis - it makes sense we would become numb to everything, as a result. This isn’t to say you need to detox from everything so you can be overstimulated by the world again, but it is saying - if you’re finding yourself numbed and would prefer a little bit of excitement and motivation once in a while, it may be helpful to 1. Notice when you’re feeling numb and find the magic of whatever you’re doing in the moment. 2. Practice intentional consumption of both media + experiences. As someone who struggled with depression - a telltale sign of a depressive episode pertained to the fact that I was unimpressed with what life had to offer - but I realize now that becoming numb is a normal response to an overstimulating and intense world. 706 || the people pleaser pause
EThe best strategy to ensure I’m not people pleasing and I’m simply “pleasing people” that I’ve found for me is: Forcing myself to take a minute to think before doing pretty much anything. I’m a mover and a shaker. I see a need, I fill a need. I like fixing. But the problem is, I can sometimes commit to things WAY before being ready. Or I can start fixing things that weren’t my issues to fix. Taking a few seconds to really consider if 1. I want to. 2. I can. 3. I should. Has changed the game for me. 697 || goofy ass goals
EYour goals don’t always have to be productive or capitalistic or important at all. In fact, I think it’s healthy as hell to have ridiculous, goofy ass goals - just for you. If you want to watch every show or film that Melissa McCarthy has touched, set your eye on the prize, pull up that IMDB resume and write yourself up a lil bingo card. If you want to travel to every pizzeria within a 12 mile radius and rank them so you can pull out your educated suggesties at any given moment - start that list. They made a whole ass movie with Meryl Streep on this concept - you can’t tell me baking your way through Julia Child’s cookbook isn’t a silly + adorable ass goal turned side-hustle. Do you want to learn every lyric to the first Weird Al discography? Go for it. Life doesn’t have to be a constant hustle and a good way to remind ourselves of that is to interject the challenging accomplishments with the “unnecessary” ones. You’re allowed to chase the shit that calls you - even if the thing that calls you is not deemed “lucrative” by our society. There’s something charming about finding out your accountant knows every local species of tree or your barista has been to every Marvel Movie premiere in their lifetime. So yeah, if you know how to solve climate change but today you would rather listen to every prince album, maybe you can do a little of column A and a little of column B for the good of humanity - but if you never give yourself a chance to chase the silly shit that calls you, you’ll be less likely to accomplish the “quality” shit in good time anyway. Let yourself enjoy the spice of life, even if the spice you choose doesn’t sound good to people who don’t have your refined palate. When we give ourselves the space to enjoy the goofy shit, we get better at enjoying the not so goofy shit. 695 || framing our messes
EOne way to feel less bogged down by cleaning - is to integrate it into your process. Instead of viewing the “clean up” as it’s own chore, or a separate activity, begin integrating it into the last stage of whatever activity you’ve just completed. Often, we don’t feel up to confronting our clutter because the idea of “tidying” is a distinct, intense, dreaded process that can be put off. The thing is, clutter and dust compound, so I don’t advocate for letting it pile up - since that will create even more resistance to the idea of tackling it. 694 || leaving our islands
Enext time you find yourself in need of validation and would like to receive that sense of deep connection within your own headspace, try getting out of yours and into someone else’s. When we share, share, share, we naturally hesitate as we await a response of some type. Depending on that response, we feel more or less connected to the people we were aiming to connect with. Which ultimately means we’re putting our well-being and value in the hands of others who are ill-equipped to handle it. This is why I encourage you to find ways to connect with them in a way to make them feel understood and seen; instead of solely depending on others to do all the understanding for you. Basically, it’s easier to see than to be seen. Plus, by taking the time to really see and hear others, we model how we’d like to be seen and heard in return. 693 || part of their world
EI know for me, when I fall in love, it’s so easy to want to share every little aspect of my day with my person, to let them see me experience fully, and keep me company throughout every second of it. That said, no matter how well I share my experience, it doesn’t guarantee the other person will understand fully - as it’s not their own. So, when I am craving a deeper connection with my partner, instead of offering the same information as a way to let them in, I put offers out to them to encourage letting me in, instead. I ask questions, I listen, and I allow myself the space to join them where they are. This practice not only helps me understand my partner more clearly, but it also puts the ball in my court - when it comes to feeling more deeply connected. When they show me them, it’s my choice to volley back with interest + respect. By making the choice to lean in and return the ball - it encourages them to continue sharing with me AND it makes me feel more aligned with them. Surprisingly, this fulfills that deep desire for connection in a way that doesn’t feel as challenging as asking others to fully understand every aspect of you in your current space. We are able to take control of the connection by digging deeper where it feels right and aiming to understand and love more fully - which is the whole damned point of connection in the first place. By letting people show you their worlds - we are able to see them more clearly, as three dimensional, well-rounded human beings - rather than trapped in whatever boxes we created for them. By choosing to join them in their world, we connect more deeply with their values. This makes it easier to show up for them. It makes it easier to see them. And it makes it easier for them to feel seen by us. EUnderstanding that movement is a tool meant to help us feel at home in our bodies can alleviate stress on our minds. By using a form of intentional movement, you let your intuition guide you towards what you need. If you need to get your blood flowing with a little cathartic high energy movement, follow your heart and see how the perception of the situation that got you there changes as you finish. If you just need to lie down and stretch, slowly integrating deeper breathing into your body, that works too. Every day, every situation, every nuance in our mental state may demand slightly different reactions. Start small, change it up if you need to, and don’t put pressure on how you do it, how much you do it, or how well you do it. 691 || mind hack || physiological sighs
EDr. Andrew Huberman from Stanford University on his podcast, Huberman Lab, coined a breath work exercise a “physiological sigh”. These Physiological sighs are two quick inhalations followed by a slower exhalation and we can do it voluntarily to trigger the physiological response of regulated, calm, and balanced in a very efficient way. By using this technique, we offload more carbon dioxide which triggers the brain to bring alertness and stress down quickly and provide a state of calm almost immediately. 690 || mind hack || breathwork
EThis one is something we have access to all the time, and with it, we can quickly elicit various desired physiological responses based on how we choose to focus our attention. Today we’re talking about the magic of our breath. According to lifehack.org - “Breathwork is an umbrella term that relates to the practice of consciously manipulating the depth and rate of breathing to achieve a specific outcome.[1][2]RESOURCE: https://www.lifehack.org/928179/what-is-breathwork WATCH: www.youtube.com/juliemericaGET A MONTHLY NOTE FROM ME: www.makeyourdamnbedpodcast.comBUY SOME MERCH: https://www.teepublic.com/stores/make-your-damn-bed-podcast?ref_id=27657TUNE IN ON INSTAGRAM FOR COOL CONTENT: www.instagram.com/mydbpodcastOR BE A REAL GEM + TUNE IN ON PATREON: www.patreon.com/MYDBpodcastSupport this show http://supporter.acast.com/make-your-damn-bed. 689 || mind hack || cold water
EThere are some pretty dope ways we can hack our minds that can help us avoid some of that pain and suffering - if we learn how to do it. Our brains are like computers and some rewiring will take a long time, while sometimes all you needed was a quick program update. One of those is through cold water therapy. Whether you completely immerse yourself in a cold shower/bath/lake, or you dip your face into an ice bath for a few seconds, cold water can activate your parasympathetic nervous system - that default mode network that kind of puts us on auto-pilot and moves us into a more conscious, calm, and regulated state. Research suggests that a program of short cold showers, two times per day, decreased participants (who were diagnoses with depression) depressive symptoms. I’ve heard cold water plunges work for hangovers, as well. 688 || the simple sticky note strategy
EBeing able to condense intimidating things that I’ve been dreading to a post-it note has reinstated a sense of control over these tasks. Plus, it made me realize I was trying to overlap some things that were meant to be two different sticky notes all along. 687 || low power mode prep
EWhen you need to go into a more low power mode, let yourself. Let yourself. Nobody gives a shit if your bed stays unmade, there’s no consequence if you didn’t hydrate enough yesterday. Life doesn’t suddenly stop being unpredictable (and sometimes terrible) when we perfectly optimize our routine. Nobody is gonna cuss you out for not cleaning the toilet. So many of us believe that we’ll be happy once we _____. Once we do that thing, once we lose that weight, once we find that person, once we buy that house, once we control every little thing that happens - but even if we do succeed at every single dream, life will always be a curveball throwing bitch. If you need to take a break, it’s better to take it now before your body demands one. Low power modes are better than needing a full on reboot. Let yourself do the bare minimum and focus only on the critical until you’re able to recharge and return to a more sustainable place. 686 || just not into it
ERemember you can restart your life at any time, which means you don’t have to do it on anyone else’s schedule. If the idea of reflecting or doing shit to better your life sounds like an impossible task at the moment, don’t sweat it. We don’t need a new year to tell us to start flossing our teeth or putting our book down before bed. We can do that on any given day at any given time. So if you need, save these episodes for a future you when you’re in a more reflective mood and remember you can’t grow if you don’t give yourself time to rest. Some years I am a beast on January first but most I am hungover and filled with a very brutal internal dialogue. It’s not like you can’t start shit in the middle of the year and still see results the same results. It's more about starting, less about when. 685 || doing
EFirst we notice, then we honor, then we act. Notice where you are now, where you’d like to head, what someone heading there would do next, then continue to take action and make decisions that honor those things until you reach your destination. Again, it’s important to get to know your personal values and become someone who honors those motivations so that this will make sense for you in the long run. If you need to change course, great. Just remember that momentum begets momentum so keep taking action towards what you want next until the next best step appears. What minor changes can you enact to get you closer to your goal? What can you do to better enjoy this process? How can you integrate gratitude into the journey itself? How can I embody and make decisions like the person who already has accomplished this goal? When the next best action feels unclear, taking a step back to regain perspective is a perfectly respectable and effective way to continue taking action, that honors what you currently need. There’s nothing wrong with that. Do what works. Drop what doesn’t. But remember that the magic comes from the action. Stop thinking, and start doing. Stop imagining, and start embodying. Stop planning, and start moving. You got this. And if you don’t, know you’re perfectly capable of figuring it out on the way.
