EWork, as we know it, its a recent construct.We must begin to think RADICALLY about the nuclear family and how we structure our lives and our goals and our sense of internal fulfillment. We’ve shaped our lives around work, and we must de-center the toxicity of work culture as a society if we want to escape it. If we decenter work we can prioritize communal spaces and sharing culture and the commons, in a way that prioritizes luxury for ALL people, not just the few. Plus, decentering the idea of work culture as we know it, we will automatically improve the perceived value of domestic labor and child rearing. That shit has never been respected, but it’s a full time job, and we should have the time to treat it like one. EWe MUST start prioritizing people over profits, but systemic changes are huge (and uncomfortable) however necessary bc the way it is now is uncomfortable unfair, unsustainable. It starts with imagination, because the people in charge of what we see and consume have a vested interest in keeping the status quo. So, it’s hard to imagine a future not dictated over growth/profits over it’s people. Laziness is a capitalist myth, made to make us feel shame for not producing capital or profits in a society that depends on it. We need to reframe our relationship with productivity so we can reassess what work is actually important. We pitch business ideas to friends, we ask kids what they’ll be when they grow up, we focus our identity around our work, CEO’s install nap pods and bars so you never need to leave work, we idealize gig economy and call it freedom but freelancing is, in practice, a24 hour a day job. Our relationship with work is toxic. We’re producing more, commuting further, retiring later, striking/unionizing less, laboring harder, and earning less. Corporate profits are at an all time high but we are at a cost of living crisis nearly double the one that spurred the French revolution. Digital tech could’ve helped us become more free, but under the current system - it’s becoming increasingly invasive and enforcing labor “from anywhere” instead of just at work. Our identity will change, because we identify with work at the moment, but we have to stop prioritizing it. Work doesn’t work. It hasn’t for a while. It doesn’t provide for people. A majority of those living in poverty are working families. Most of our jobs are not only unnecessary but they’re actively damaging.It’s not our fault for working these jobs, but just because we were born into a shitty today, it doesn’t mean we cant work together to make a more proactive and inclusive tomorrow. But in my experience we have to be willing to admit when we’re part of the problem without feeling shame - so we can fix it, rather than avoid it like we have been for so long. EI recently finished the library copy of Big Magic by Elizabeth Gilbert - who you may know from Eat, Pray, Love fame - and if I’m honest I read it in college ish and was not a fan. I judged her hard, and because of it - I avoided content until recently when clips of her offering incredibly insightful thoughts I decided to give her new book - the one she was often promoting with these interviews - a shot. The book is Big Magic. And it’s a fairly short read about creative living and as is always the case with self-help type books, I have a few notes, but overall the book was really lovely and made me think - which is really all you can ask for in a book. It’s a book I’m sure I’ll return to - and may even buy for my own shelf eventually, because it’s about the spark + realigning with it - which as a creative, is a necessary part of the process every once in a while. This book doesn’t define creativity as pursuing a life that is exclusively or professionally devoted to the arts, rather it’s written as a manual with universal aspirations and provides lessons in how to unleash your creativity.Here are my favorite insights from the book - On fear: If you pass your hand over a petri dish containing a tadpole, the tadpole will flinch beneath your shadow. That tadpole cannot write poetry, and it cannot sing, and it will never know love or jealousy or triumph, and it has a brain the size of a punctuation mark, but it damn sure knows how to be afraid of the unknown. Well so do I, so do we all but theres nothing particularly compelling about that. Theres no extra credit for being afraid of the unknown. Fear is a deeply ancient instinct. Evolutionarily vital. But it aint especially “smart”. EThis podcast is no stranger to the concept of our reality being based on our perception of it. It’s fairly common knowledge at this point that our perception shapes and influences our personal experience of reality. The lens through which you interpret the world is different than the lens I interpret the world; which means our experience of people, places, and things - are rooted in our personal realities and may not always reflect the same reality. There are days where my negative lens colors the way I interpret everything I see and do, and there are days where my positive lens colors the way I interpret everything I see and do. Even if the day offers the exact same shit, and I am the same me, I have the potential to have VASTLY different experiences within each of my “moods” and they are all valid, true, and REAL. But this reality - the perceived experience of it all - is not the only reality that exists. There are countless realities we can create for ourselves by changing our perspective - and there are countless realities other’s experience based on their changing perspectives.This is an important thing to understand in general, for our own wellbeing and to improve our connections with others. The fact of the matter is - we are not simply seeing and believing our reality, we’re creating it. I wills ay, this is where it gets slippery. EOnce we learn how to prioritize the shit we need to do, we will feel more clear about the next steps we need to take to do them. This often leads to analysis paralysis or task paralysis like I’ve mentioned in the past. We tend to overanalyze and overthink which causes any decision making or forward momentum to seem impossible. Whether the situation be too complicated or not - the anxiety is enough to suppress our decision making in an unconscious effort to preserve the existing options. Give yourself a minute to figure out what we need to do before you try and figure out how and where and why and when and all that shit.Typically this begins with creating a to do list. That said, having a list of shit we need to do is different than knowing where to begin.
