as per we must embrace the way kids learn. The direct link between age and the ability to learn is tenuous, with some studies dispelling the myth that children are inherently better learners than adults. The key to learning as quickly as a child may be simply to take on certain childlike attitudes: a lack of self-consciousness, a desire to play in the language and a willingness to make mistakes. Plus, it helps to come in with fewer preconceived notions about what a language is and can be. Humans learn by making mistakes. As kids, we are expected to make mistakes, but as adults, mistakes are taboo. Think how an adult is more likely to say “I can’t” rather than “I haven’t learned that yet.” To be seen failing (or merely struggling) is a social taboo that doesn’t burden children as much. When it comes to learning a language, admitting that you don’t know everything is the key to growth and freedom. Let go of your grown-up inhibitions! Matthew Youlden said, “I tend to want to absorb as much as possible right from the start. So if I learn something, I really, really go for it and try to use it throughout the day. As the week progresses I try to think in it, try to write in it, try to speak to myself even in that language. For me, it’s about actually putting what you’re learning into practice — be that writing an email, speaking to yourself, listening to music, listening to the radio. Surrounding yourself, submerging yourself in the new language culture is extremely important.” Here are 10 of Matthew’s best language-learning tips.WHERE AS John McWhorter, leading linguistics expert said, “The other thing is having realistic expectations of how much time you’re going to spend a day. For example, when I’m not doing my Mandarin lessons, which involve going and talking to a person for an hour and a half … 15 minutes, maybe 20 minutes a day. That’s about all the time I have. Instead, think of Spanish as a new way to experience your everyday life: Change the display language on your computer to Spanish, find Spanish-language movies and TV shows to watch (with Spanish subtitles, not English), get your news or celebrity gossip fix from Spanish-language websites, check out Spanish-language podcasts and youtube videos on topics that already interest you. If you use Spanish to do things that you’d be doing anyway, studying daily will become an automatic reflex instead of a dreaded chore. Ultimately, media literacy involves teaching that images are constructed with various aims in mind and that it falls to the individual to evaluate and interpret these media messages. When analyzing media messages, consider the following:Who created the message?What are the author’s credentials?Why was the message created?Is the message trying to get me to act or think in a certain way?Is someone making money for creating this message?Who is the intended audience?How do I know this information is accurate?OR consider these: Author: Consider who is presenting the information. Is it a news organization, a corporation, or an individual? What links do they have to the information they are providing? A news station might be owned by the company it is reporting on; likewise, an individual might have financial reasons for supporting a certain message.Format: Television and print media often use images to grab people’s attention. Do the visuals only present one side of the story? Is the footage overly graphic or designed to provoke a specific reaction? Which celebrities or professionals are endorsing this message?Audience: Imagine yourself in another’s shoes. Would someone of the opposite gender feel the same way as you do about this message? How might someone of a different race or nationality feel about it? How might an older or younger person interpret this information differently? Was this message made to appeal to a specific audience?Content: Even content providers that try to present information objectively can have an unconscious slant. Analyze who is presenting this message. Does he or she have any clear political affiliations? Is he or she being paid to speak or write this information? Join a union; contribute to strike funds, help make general strikes happen; allow yourself to imagine a multiplicity of futures and work out how to move towards them. Advocate for climate debt to be addressed and for existing Global South debt to be cancelled so that there can be a global transition away from imperialism. Get involved in work that is directed at tackling the producing class - the bosses and titans of industry - and work to take these corporations down. Call out their greenwashing to take down their social licences - a topic we will be covering in the next chapter. And importantly, build support and power in our communities and through our political systems so that the future we need can be won by the masses. We must build widespread support for an eco-socialist, post-growth future. The climate crisis makes the fight against capitalism more urgent than ever. This fight is inherently political. There are a lot of people with a lot of power who are doing all that they can to maintain the capitalist system.
