1031 || red herring
EA red herring is a term used to describe something that is intended to be misleading or distracting from the actual issue or point. It is a rhetorical device or a literary technique often used in discussions, arguments, or storytelling to divert attention away from the main topic. The term has its origins in the practice of using a strong-smelling smoked fish, called a red herring, to divert hunting dogs from the scent they were originally following.GET AN OCCASIONAL PERSONAL EMAIL FROM ME: www.makeyourdamnbedpodcast.comTUNE IN ON INSTAGRAM FOR COOL CONTENT: www.instagram.com/mydbpodcastOR BE A REAL GEM + TUNE IN ON PATREON: www.patreon.com/MYDBpodcastOR WATCH ON YOUTUBE: www.youtube.com/juliemerica The opinions expressed by Julie Merica and Make Your Damn Bed Podcast are intended for entertainment purposes only. 1030 || pinching pennies (final hacks)
EGet mindful of your values and that will make setting boundaries way easier. Boundaries are not walls, but behavioral guidelines that can allow us some control in responding to other people’s behaviors. Maintenance is key to basic wellbeing. Oil changes, cleaning, moisturizing, rest. People are sneaky about convincing you what ESSENTIAL maintenance is. They'll have you waxing your hairless cat and convincing you it’s necessary (weekly… until the end of time…) Bring snacks + a water (and other beverages, shit) because 9/10 an apple can save me from stopping at a chili’s for margaritas and fries..Skillshare. Co-ops. Errand stack. Ask before buying. Automatic savings and bill pay for essentials: rent/insurance/utilities/internet/etc.Cancel unnecessary bills and pay those manually. If you subscribe - set audible alerts with reminders to cancel before the next pay period. Establish free/cost effective healthy outlets and hobbies - physical/creative/communal- ideally one that incorporates all three. Be realistic with yourself. Never be ashamed of where you are. You are more than your savings account or your budget. 1029 || pinch pennies with community
EBecome a more conscious buyer. Maybe you get an accountability partner, Maybe you do the 30 day test, Maybe you quit walking into targets altogether, whatever it is - stop buying shit that you don’t NEED. If you want it, track what emotion you believe you will have from it, and try to establish a different way of experiencing that. If it’s in your current wheelhouse - become a more conscious hoarder: cultivate an “upcycling” eye + be realistic with what you choose to save. I do this by asking myself: Will I really use this? If so, when + how? Be honest + real with this. Some times in my life, this means trashing or recycling more than I would prefer. Buf if its near a holiday, I save boxes and packing paper for gifts. Set a reminder in my phone + store it in an accessible place - ideally with all the other materials ill need. Keep your old FAVORITE clothing items, even if they’re outta style or outta your standard size - unlessssss you’ve officially decided that is a style that will no longer apply to your life moving forward + that includes all future versions of you. Point is - nothing worse than getting rid of a great pair of pants you outgrew or shrunk outta and realizing you actually really dont wanna have to go through the process of finding a new version of those. LIBRARIES. Tool libraries. Real libraries. Media libraries. Yardsales. Estate sales. Garage sales. Community sales. The internet made it easier, but I tell you what - nothing beats driving around early on the weekend instead. Get to know your neighbors. Really. Get hallmark movie on their ass and send a handwritten letter or check in while passing by on the street, to see out how they’re living. Maybe they also want to practice their german. Maybe they made too much bread pudding and you happen to be a bread pudding aficionado. Maybe they have a half empty compost bucket they need your scraps to make worth the investment, or they are looking for the exact size shoe you were planning on donating or maybe they keep getting your netflix feed and aren’t mad at it or whatever. Point is - some neighbors want to get us in on multi-level marketing schemes, other just want to share lawnmowers, gardening efforts, and the occasional sense of community. Also, i make it a habit of telling anyone with a nicer home than mine that i would be happy to house/pet sit if they go out of town. 2/10 it comes through and i treat that shit like an airbnb. Respectfully but pretending it is my own bc im a millennial in a housing crisis. 1024 || polyvagal theory
EPolyvagal theory (PVT) isn't validated by neuroscientists but we can definitely learn from the theory itself. According to the theory, three organizational principles can be distinguished:Explanatory diagram:Hierarchy: The autonomic nervous system reacts in three reaction patterns, which are activated in a specific order.Neuroception: In contrast to perception, it is here a cognition without awareness, triggered by a stimulus such as danger.[14][19]Co-regulation: The need to feel safe enough to allow oneself to be in relationships, which is difficult for traumatized people.[20RESOURCE: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polyvagal_theoryhttps://www.justinlmft.com/post/dorsal-vagal-shutdownhttps://ct.counseling.org/2016/06/polyvagal-theory-practice/GET THE OCCASIONAL PERSONAL EMAIL FROM ME: www.makeyourdamnbedpodcast.comTUNE IN ON INSTAGRAM FOR COOL CONTENT: www.instagram.com/mydbpodcastOR BE A REAL GEM + TUNE IN ON PATREON: www.patreon.com/MYDBpodcastOR WATCH ON YOUTUBE: www.youtube.com/juliemerica The opinions expressed by Julie Merica and Make Your Damn Bed Podcast are intended for entertainment purposes only. EI've struggled with "getting started" my whole life - but lately, even the easy stuff I have begun to dread. That said, I think it usually comes back to my tendency to over-plan. 1022 || Seasonal Affective Disorder isn't real????

1013 || liberated by authenticity
Eacceptable does not equal valuable. acceptable does not equal loved. if we know who we are and how we show up - what we have to show up for, begins to matter a hell of a lot less. when we live authentically, we become happier. the mask we wear to "fit in" is great - but the more inauthentic it is, the heavier it feels. take it off as often as you can - so you can embrace the liberation from life without it. the societal expectations on us is confinement. free yourself by getting vulnerable and being YOU.RESOURCES: https://www.psychologytoday.com/gb/blog/your-emotional-meter/201908/how-build-strong-sense-selfand https://www.psychologytoday.com/gb/blog/your-emotional-meter/202311/embrace-authenticity-and-live-your-true-selfGET AN OCCASIONAL PERSONAL EMAIL FROM ME: www.makeyourdamnbedpodcast.comTUNE IN ON INSTAGRAM FOR COOL CONTENT: www.instagram.com/mydbpodcastOR BE A REAL GEM + TUNE IN ON PATREON: www.patreon.com/MYDBpodcastOR WATCH ON YOUTUBE: www.youtube.com/juliemerica The opinions expressed by Julie Merica and Make Your Damn Bed Podcast are intended for entertainment purposes only. EACCESS THE FULL EPISODE: https://www.patreon.com/posts/extended-episode-93912286?utm_medium=clipboard_copy&utm_source=copyLink&utm_campaign=postshare_creator&utm_content=join_linkI tend to think boredom as a PAINFUL, unavoidable piece of humanity + I try to distract myself and relieve the pain through novelty + exploration. But here's the thing... Boredom is an emotion like any other. It doesn't define me. It defines a feeling. And feelings are there to communicate something. Let it communicate, listen, and adjust. Don't resist it. Sometimes the magic is lying right below the surface - and we have to allow ourselves settle in silence long enough to find it. Being bored is not a waste of time. It’s something your brain needs to learn, grow, and recharge. So, do yourself a favor: Give yourself a few minutes a day to let your mind zone out. You and your brain deserve it.I am learning that not all quiet spaces need to be filled with sound and not all grounded feet need to be moving. There is beauty in boredom. 990 || radical compassion towards madness
E"... mad methodology primes us to extend radical compassion to the madpersons, queer personae, ghosts, freaks, weirdos, imaginary friends, disembodied voices, unvoiced bodies, and unReasonable others, who trespass, like stowaways or fugitives, in Reasonable modernity. Radical compassion is a will to care for, a commitment to feel with, a striving to learn from, and an openness to be vulnerable before a precarious other, though they may be drastically dissimilar to yourself. Radical compassion is not an appeal to an idyllic oneness where difference is blithely effaced. Nor is it a smug projection of oneself into the position of another, thereby displacing that other. Nor is it an invitation to walk a mile in someone else’s shoes and amble, like a tourist, through their lifeworld, leaving them existentially barefoot all the while. Rather, radical compassion is an exhortation to ethically walk and sit and fight and build alongside another whose condition may be utterly unlike your own. Radical compassion works to impart care, exchange feeling, transmit understanding, embolden vulnerability, and fortify solidarity across circumstantial, sociocultural, phenomenological, and ontological chasms in the interest of mutual liberation. It persists even and especially toward beings who are the objects of contempt and condemnation from dominant value systems." - Dr. La Marr Jurelle Bruce RESOURCES: PDF for chapter 1: https://www.dukeupress.edu/Assets/PubMaterials/978-1-4780-1087-6_601.pdfBUY THE BOOK: https://www.dukeupress.edu/how-to-go-mad-without-losing-your-mind?utm_source=intro&utm_medium=title%20page&utm_campaign=pdf-intros-Apr21AUTHOR INFO: https://afamstudies.yale.edu/people/la-marr-bruceINSPIRING POST: https://ismatu.substack.com/p/there-is-no-revolution-without-madness#details and https://blog.apaonline.org/2023/04/25/the-blacker-the-madness-the-balmy-methodologies-of-la-marr-jurelle-bruce/GET AN OCCASIONAL PERSONAL EMAIL FROM ME: www.makeyourdamnbedpodcast.comTUNE IN ON INSTAGRAM FOR COOL CONTENT: www.instagram.com/mydbpodcastOR BE A REAL GEM + TUNE IN ON PATREON: www.patreon.com/MYDBpodcastOR WATCH ON YOUTUBE: www.youtube.com/juliemerica The opinions expressed by Julie Merica and Make Your Damn Bed Podcast are intended for entertainment purposes only. 986 || learn like a kid
Eas per we must embrace the way kids learn. The direct link between age and the ability to learn is tenuous, with some studies dispelling the myth that children are inherently better learners than adults. The key to learning as quickly as a child may be simply to take on certain childlike attitudes: a lack of self-consciousness, a desire to play in the language and a willingness to make mistakes. Plus, it helps to come in with fewer preconceived notions about what a language is and can be. Humans learn by making mistakes. As kids, we are expected to make mistakes, but as adults, mistakes are taboo. Think how an adult is more likely to say “I can’t” rather than “I haven’t learned that yet.” To be seen failing (or merely struggling) is a social taboo that doesn’t burden children as much. When it comes to learning a language, admitting that you don’t know everything is the key to growth and freedom. Let go of your grown-up inhibitions! Matthew Youlden said, “I tend to want to absorb as much as possible right from the start. So if I learn something, I really, really go for it and try to use it throughout the day. As the week progresses I try to think in it, try to write in it, try to speak to myself even in that language. For me, it’s about actually putting what you’re learning into practice — be that writing an email, speaking to yourself, listening to music, listening to the radio. Surrounding yourself, submerging yourself in the new language culture is extremely important.” Here are 10 of Matthew’s best language-learning tips.WHERE AS John McWhorter, leading linguistics expert said, “The other thing is having realistic expectations of how much time you’re going to spend a day. For example, when I’m not doing my Mandarin lessons, which involve going and talking to a person for an hour and a half … 15 minutes, maybe 20 minutes a day. That’s about all the time I have. If I tried to make it more, I would get intimidated, and I probably couldn’t fit it in because, if you’re a busy person, life doesn’t offer you naked half hours, and certainly not whole hours.” GET AN OCCASIONAL PERSONAL EMAIL FROM ME: www.makeyourdamnbedpodcast.comTUNE IN ON INSTAGRAM FOR COOL CONTENT: www.instagram.com/mydbpodcastOR BE A REAL GEM + TUNE IN ON PATREON: www.patreon.com/MYDBpodcastOR WATCH ON YOUTUBE: www.youtube.com/juliemerica The opinions expressed by Julie Merica and Make Your Damn Bed Podcast are intended for entertainment purposes only. KEY is repetition and regularity.habit forming is about focus, not time Aim to reliably trigger new desired behavior so it becomes second nature. Anchor it to an established habit. here is some some advice from Matthew Youlden, a polyglot who speaks nine languages: Don’t isolate your study of the language from the rest of your life — you’re not learning Spanish in order to talk about learning Spanish. Instead, think of Spanish as a new way to experience your everyday life: Change the display language on your computer to Spanish, find Spanish-language movies and TV shows to watch (with Spanish subtitles, not English), get your news or celebrity gossip fix from Spanish-language websites, check out Spanish-language podcasts and youtube videos on topics that already interest you. If you use Spanish to do things that you’d be doing anyway, studying daily will become an automatic reflex instead of a dreaded chore.
