1059 || we're all just middle managers

E

If I’ve learned anything from getting older, it’s that we’re all middle managers of our emotions, our energies, our moods, our feelings, and our experiences. I’ve had a lot of different types of managers in the past that have taught me things about how I showed Innman and by recognizing my own capabilities and limitations and knowing what I actually enjoy as a manager I could slowly start to enjoy the process of managing my moods, emotions, energy, and so on the second, I could separate a traditional managing role from the thousands of different types of managing there really is in this world that can often feel really fulfilling and profitable and progressive managing styles. Other influential unions, such as the United Electrical Workers, American Postal Workers Union, and 1199SEIU (United Healthcare Workers East), and countless other smaller unions have also released similar statements. Influence Policy: Your emails are a powerful tool for shaping the decisions of elected officials. By participating, you contribute directly to a national call for peace, urging leaders to prioritize a ceasefire in Gaza.Express Your Views: Use your voice to highlight the urgency of the crisis. Your concerns, when aggregated, become a significant force, compelling officials to acknowledge and address the situation.Hold Officials Accountable: Continuous engagement is key. Your repeated emails serve as a reminder that the public's demand for peace and justice is not a fleeting moment, but a sustained movement. By maintaining pressure, you ensure that officials remain responsive to their constituents' calls for a ceasefire. While we may not reach representatives directly, the aggregate numbers of emails sent make an undeniable impact. The volume of messages calling for a ceasefire is reported to officials, illustrating the strength and persistence of public opinion. It's essential to continue sending emails, repeatedly if necessary, to ensure our message is heard loud and clear. 1055 || perspective check || "momfluencer" culture + rage bait

E

It feels like shit to recognize your privilege for the first time. But once you see it, you can use that privilege to uplift or provoke. Some things are nuanced, and this one DEFINITELY is. I find it fascinating and important to have perspective and recognize that perspective is only afforded to those who aren't in survival mode (which a rich heiress would never understand, and I wish nobody had do understand, but I digress...)Point is, society is broken, you aren't. You're in fact in the very lucky and beautiful window of humanity which are willing to see society has "painted over the light the the end of our tunnel, and it's going to take a community effort to stop the flow of paint, or chip away at the paint that is there" and that's fucking beautiful. Truly, no shade to https://ballerinafarm.com/ I actually learned a lot from the content. But it's a brand! Not a realistic portrayal of one human. And I don't wish she had less privilege, I just wish we all had the same amount, to start. thanks to @Caro on tiktok for this inspiration. 1050 || bonobos + chimps || a conspiracy theory

E

I had such a great time talking about pigeons, I figured we could have some fun discussing other animals. Today, specifically, we are talking about one of my favorites but the chronically underrated “bonobos”. I’ve only ever really thought about bonobos during a college anthropology class, and then they kinda fell off the radar for me. Chimpanzees won the pop culture and research award and left bonobos in the dust. I’ve read there is a vested interest in making sure that we (the general public) learn about chimp culture more than bonobo culture because it would provide us with support and e vidence that we could do better as a society, and at this point, knowing what I know about bonobos (and society) - it would not surprise me if that were the case - but I digress. But contrary to your 3rd grade science teacher’s beliefs: humans closest relative is not just the chimpanzee. 1047 || news from The Hague

The Hague refers to both a city and a region in the Netherlands. As a city, The Hague is one of the major cities in the country and serves as the seat of the Dutch government, housing the parliament, the prime minister's office, and the monarch's workplace. Additionally, The Hague is known for hosting various international organizations and courts. One of the most notable international institutions based in The Hague is the International Court of Justice (ICJ), which is the principal judicial organ of the United Nations. The ICJ settles legal disputes between states and provides advisory opinions on legal questions referred to it by the UN General Assembly, the UN Security Council, or other specialized agencies.Furthermore, The Hague is home to the International Criminal Court (ICC), which prosecutes individuals for the most serious international crimes, such as genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity. In summary, The Hague is a city in the Netherlands with significant international importance, particularly in the realms of international law and diplomacy.SIGN a petition for ceasefire here: https://www.jewishvoiceforpeace.org/resource/ceasefire/RESOURCES: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Hague https://www.npr.org/2024/01/12/1224363666/israel-hamas-war-palestinians-south-africa-genocide-case-court https://www.pbs.org/newshour/world/watch-south-africa-tells-top-un-court-israel-is-committing-genocide-in-gaza-in-landmark-case#:~:text=THE%20HAGUE%2C%20Netherlands%20(AP),Israeli%20military%20operations%20in%20Gaza.https://theintercept.com/2024/01/11/south-africa-israel-genocide-charges/ GET AN OCCASIONAL PERSONAL EMAIL FROM ME: www.makeyourdamnbedpodcast.comTUNE IN ON INSTAGRAM FOR COOL CONTENT: www.instagram.com/mydbpodcastOR BE A REAL GEM + TUNE IN ON PATREON: www.patreon.com/MYDBpodcastOR WATCH ON YOUTUBE: www.youtube.com/juliemerica The opinions expressed by Julie Merica and Make Your Damn Bed Podcast are intended for entertainment purposes only. 1045 || hopeful options

E

“Keep a little fire burning; however small, however hidden.” — Cormac McCarthyHope is fundamental to human existence. It is paradoxical in its duality, however, as its very existence implies the possibility of despair (Lynch, 1962). This dialectic between hope and despair is central to considerations of chronic illness management, as well as to studies of the relationship between expectations and the placebo effect (Corbett, et al., 2007; Ratcliffe, 2011). Hope influences expectation, but is a distinct and multifaceted cognitive, embodied, and broadly existential experience (Mattingly, 2010). In order to maintain hope when faced with a situation that appears hopeless, individuals must navigate multiple contradictions between reality and possibility, embrace cultural notions of what is deemed acceptable to hope for, and be attentive to the hopes and concerns of significant others (Averill and Sundararajan, 2005; Chesla, 2005; DelVecchio Good, et al., 1990; Sulmasy, et al., 2010; Brown, 2015).RESOURCE: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4721951/GET AN OCCASIONAL PERSONAL EMAIL FROM ME: www.makeyourdamnbedpodcast.comTUNE IN ON INSTAGRAM FOR COOL CONTENT: www.instagram.com/mydbpodcastOR BE A REAL GEM + TUNE IN ON PATREON: www.patreon.com/MYDBpodcastOR WATCH ON YOUTUBE: www.youtube.com/juliemerica The opinions expressed by Julie Merica and Make Your Damn Bed Podcast are intended for entertainment purposes only. 1043 || book club || I who have never known men

E

content warning: today's episode has brief mention of heavy trauma. "I Who Have Never Known Men" is a science fiction novel written by Jacqueline Harpman, a Belgian author. The original French title is "Moi qui n'ai pas connu les hommes," and it was published in 1995. It explores themes of identity, survival, humanity, curiosity, hope, and yearning. This book wrecked me, but in a very good way. That said, it's not for everyone at every juncture in life. oldlampshades said this, which sadly, I didn't include in today's episode, but better late than never: "What I love about this book is that it’s a story of a human with so much of her humanity stolen from her, yet she still finds herself asking the most fundamentally human questions: why am I here? What does it all mean? It’s a story about how even when born into a society so different from any that exists now, humans will always find love, hope, and wonder.I think what makes it a masterpiece is that we don’t get any of the answers. There isn’t a neatly tied up ending. It makes the book an allegory for life, because we don’t get the answers to those questions, really."RESOURCES: https://www.overdrive.com/media/4678018/i-who-have-never-known-menhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I_Who_Have_Never_Known_Men https://www.goodreads.com/en/book/show/11996 https://www.reddit.com/r/books/comments/10ts2rc/i_just_finished_i_who_have_never_known_men_by/ GET AN OCCASIONAL PERSONAL EMAIL FROM ME: www.makeyourdamnbedpodcast.comTUNE IN ON INSTAGRAM FOR COOL CONTENT: www.instagram.com/mydbpodcastOR BE A REAL GEM + TUNE IN ON PATREON: www.patreon.com/MYDBpodcastOR WATCH ON YOUTUBE: www.youtube.com/juliemerica The opinions expressed by Julie Merica and Make Your Damn Bed Podcast are intended for entertainment purposes only. 1042 || existential ennui

E

you are a human being not a human doing. Contrary to the structures and powers and systems that have convinced us otherwise, you aren’t supposed to be doing and stressing all fucking day every day. In fact, you’re supposed to be prioritizing yourself before juggling all the other shit. Listen, I truly understand that this IS a privileged take that sounds like it cannot apply to everybody in this hellscape,  i get that. Some of us are truly juggling demanding jobs/kids/pets/brains/ livelihoods and I never want to underestimate that  - BUT as counter-intuitive as it sounds, the reminder still stands, YOU are allowed to just be. Even for 30 seconds at a time, shit involve those demanding customers, kids, pets, friends if you have to.  But take 10 seconds when you can to just sit in silence. And steal away every moment you can to sit. Sit and do diddly fucking shit. And don’t ever feel guilty about it. If you need to justify it - ill remind you that according to neuroscientists, boredom has gotten a bum rap, and it can actually amp up your creativity, task engagement and job productivity. there are thousands of definitions of boredom. it's all in how you interpret + respond. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4217586/https://iep.utm.edu/boredom/GET AN OCCASIONAL PERSONAL EMAIL FROM ME: www.makeyourdamnbedpodcast.comTUNE IN ON INSTAGRAM FOR COOL CONTENT: www.instagram.com/mydbpodcastOR BE A REAL GEM + TUNE IN ON PATREON: www.patreon.com/MYDBpodcastOR WATCH ON YOUTUBE: www.youtube.com/juliemerica The opinions expressed by Julie Merica and Make Your Damn Bed Podcast are intended for entertainment purposes only. 1041 || a compiled compilation

E

Stop over-intellectualizing everything to avoid the feeling part and let yourself actually feel the damn thing. And listen, I’m no therapist, but I feel like resisting that feeling portion is just prolonging its lifespan in your body. You gotta move through it, but you can’t move through it unless you let it move through you, first. I read something once (that I’ll never question because it made sense) that said the physical effects of an emotion only peak for about 90 seconds and I feel like I can write anything out for 90 seconds. So, all that cheesy meditative nonsense that you have heard about riding it out and feeling it in your body. Do that! Let yourself feel without judgement as best you can because sure, some emotions will suck, they will feel bad, you will feel bad in them. But they are there for a reason not a season, so let them in to leave their lil message and send them on their way.  Otherwise, they’ll continue to haunt you, forever. Instead of letting your insecurity stifle you let it guide you it’s a lighthouse not a destination the light there is to tell you where it is so that you can either go towards it or away from it, depending on where your navigation is pointed. 1040 || pep talk for sad friends compilation

E

Even baddies get the saddies: Anybody who’s been feeling a little down or slow in their healing process but they’re still trying to show up? Well, this one is for everybody, but it’s mostly for you. Your experiences are what got you to where you are right now; they cannot be changed, the past cannot be altered. It is a part of your story now and objectively. It is an undeniably beautiful story. It’s rich with highs and lows, ups and downs, but you choose to show up and choose things that feel like healing day in and day out year after year even after occasional slip up,  no matter how tough shit really gets for you??? Well, that’s extremely rare energy. that said - you may have to confront some demons that you may have been running from for a while, but in order for them to stop showing up in your life as demons we do need to face them, head the fuck on. And you are absolutely capable of doing that with the appropriate support. GET AN OCCASIONAL PERSONAL EMAIL FROM ME: www.makeyourdamnbedpodcast.comTUNE IN ON INSTAGRAM FOR COOL CONTENT: www.instagram.com/mydbpodcastOR BE A REAL GEM + TUNE IN ON PATREON: www.patreon.com/MYDBpodcastOR WATCH ON YOUTUBE: www.youtube.com/juliemerica The opinions expressed by Julie Merica and Make Your Damn Bed Podcast are intended for entertainment purposes only. 1031 || red herring

E

A red herring is a term used to describe something that is intended to be misleading or distracting from the actual issue or point. It is a rhetorical device or a literary technique often used in discussions, arguments, or storytelling to divert attention away from the main topic. The term has its origins in the practice of using a strong-smelling smoked fish, called a red herring, to divert hunting dogs from the scent they were originally following.GET AN OCCASIONAL PERSONAL EMAIL FROM ME: www.makeyourdamnbedpodcast.comTUNE IN ON INSTAGRAM FOR COOL CONTENT: www.instagram.com/mydbpodcastOR BE A REAL GEM + TUNE IN ON PATREON: www.patreon.com/MYDBpodcastOR WATCH ON YOUTUBE: www.youtube.com/juliemerica The opinions expressed by Julie Merica and Make Your Damn Bed Podcast are intended for entertainment purposes only. E

Get mindful of your values and that will make setting boundaries way easier. Boundaries are not walls, but behavioral guidelines that can allow us some control in responding to other people’s behaviors. Maintenance is key to basic wellbeing. Oil changes, cleaning, moisturizing, rest.  People are sneaky about convincing you what ESSENTIAL maintenance is. They'll have you waxing your hairless cat and convincing you it’s necessary (weekly… until the end of time…) Bring snacks + a water (and other beverages, shit) because 9/10 an apple can save me from stopping at a chili’s for margaritas and fries..Skillshare. Co-ops. Errand stack. Ask before buying. Automatic savings and bill pay for essentials: rent/insurance/utilities/internet/etc.Cancel unnecessary bills and pay those manually. If you subscribe - set audible alerts with reminders to cancel before the next pay period.  Establish free/cost effective healthy outlets and hobbies - physical/creative/communal- ideally one that incorporates all three. Be realistic with yourself. Never be ashamed of where you are. 1029 || pinch pennies with community

E

Become a more conscious buyer. Maybe you get an accountability partner, Maybe you do the 30 day test, Maybe you quit walking into targets altogether, whatever it is - stop buying shit that you don’t NEED. If you want it, track what emotion you believe you will have from it, and try to establish a different way of experiencing that. If it’s in your current wheelhouse - become a more conscious hoarder: cultivate an “upcycling” eye + be realistic with what you choose to save. I do this by asking myself: Will I really use this? If so, when + how? Be honest + real with this. Some times in my life, this means trashing or recycling more than I would prefer. Buf if its near a holiday, I save boxes and packing paper for gifts. Set a reminder in my phone + store it in an accessible place - ideally with all the other materials ill need. Keep your old FAVORITE clothing items, even if they’re outta style or outta your standard size - unlessssss you’ve officially decided that is a style that will no longer apply to your life moving forward + that includes all future versions of you. Point is - nothing worse than getting rid of a great pair of pants you outgrew or shrunk outta and realizing you actually really dont wanna have to go through the process of finding a new version of those.  LIBRARIES. Tool libraries. Real libraries. Media libraries. Yardsales. Estate sales. Garage sales. Community sales. The internet made it easier, but I tell you what - nothing beats driving around early on the weekend instead. Get to know your neighbors. Really. Get hallmark movie on their ass and send a handwritten letter or check in while passing by on the street, to see out how they’re living. Maybe they also want to practice their german. Maybe they made too much bread pudding and you happen to be a bread pudding aficionado. Maybe they have a half empty compost bucket they need your scraps to make worth the investment, or they are looking for the exact size shoe you were planning on donating or maybe they keep getting your netflix feed and aren’t mad at it or whatever. Point is - some neighbors want to get us in on multi-level marketing schemes, other just want to share lawnmowers, gardening efforts, and the occasional sense of community. Also, i make it a habit of telling anyone with a nicer home than mine that i would be happy to house/pet sit if they go out of town. 2/10 it comes through and i treat that shit like an airbnb. 1015 || permaculture principles + what we can learn from them

E

permaculture is an "approach to land management and settlement design that adopts arrangements observed in flourishing natural ecosystems. It includes a set of design principles derived using whole-systems thinking" and we can learn a lot from the principles. By learning to observe, connect, reframe, reevaluate, refocus, and rewild - we also learn how to build a more sustainable relationship with our daily life. 1013 || liberated by authenticity

E

acceptable does not equal valuable. acceptable does not equal loved. if we know who we are and how we show up - what we have to show up for, begins to matter a hell of a lot less. when we live authentically, we become happier. the mask we wear to "fit in" is great - but the more inauthentic it is, the heavier it feels. take it off as often as you can - so you can embrace the liberation from life without it. the societal expectations on us is confinement. free yourself by getting vulnerable and being YOU.RESOURCES: https://www.psychologytoday.com/gb/blog/your-emotional-meter/201908/how-build-strong-sense-selfand https://www.psychologytoday.com/gb/blog/your-emotional-meter/202311/embrace-authenticity-and-live-your-true-selfGET AN OCCASIONAL PERSONAL EMAIL FROM ME: www.makeyourdamnbedpodcast.comTUNE IN ON INSTAGRAM FOR COOL CONTENT: www.instagram.com/mydbpodcastOR BE A REAL GEM + TUNE IN ON PATREON: www.patreon.com/MYDBpodcastOR WATCH ON YOUTUBE: www.youtube.com/juliemerica  The opinions expressed by Julie Merica and Make Your Damn Bed Podcast are intended for entertainment purposes only.
