1080 || Maya Angelou Affirmations (most banger quotes)
EToday I recite a whole bunch of incredible Maya Angelou quotes because I knew I had been quoting her for years but the extent to which I did NOT know how much(????) was absolutely revelatory.Did you know she said: “Never make someone a priority when all you are to them is an option.” and “When someone shows you who they are, believe them the first time.” and “Living well is an art that can be developed: a love of life and ability to take great pleasure from small offerings and assurance that the world owes you nothing and that every gift is exactly that, a gift.”https://www.goodgoodgood.co/articles/maya-angelou-quoteshttps://www.stylist.co.uk/books/quotes/maya-angelou-best-quotes/199029 Interview: https://www.context.org/iclib/ic43/angelou/ GET AN OCCASIONAL PERSONAL EMAIL FROM ME: www.makeyourdamnbedpodcast.comTUNE IN ON INSTAGRAM FOR COOL CONTENT: www.instagram.com/mydbpodcastOR BE A REAL GEM + TUNE IN ON PATREON: www.patreon.com/MYDBpodcastOR WATCH ON YOUTUBE: www.youtube.com/juliemerica The opinions expressed by Julie Merica and Make Your Damn Bed Podcast are intended for entertainment purposes only. 1079 || the poetic analysis of Maya Angelou
EYesterday, I shared Maya Angelou’s poem, On the Pulse of the Morning. And today, before we discuss it, I want to share an interview I found of her discussing writing it, this video includes Bill and Hillary Clinton’s opinions on the poetry as well. Originally, I wrote all these responses in my own words, but it just doesn’t feel right - further distilling history when we have video and audio, and you can hear it straight from the source, here: https://florida.pbslearningmedia.org/resource/ang17.ela.poetry.morning/maya-angelou-still-i-rise-maya-angelou-and-the-1993-inaugural-poem-on-the-pulse-of-morning/ Linda + Maya's interview: https://www.context.org/iclib/ic43/angelou/ Other resources used for today: https://www.losangelesblade.com/2018/04/06/remembering-maya-angelou-lgbts/ All of Maya Angelou's poetry, archived for free?!: https://antilogicalism.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/maya_angelou.pdf GET AN OCCASIONAL PERSONAL EMAIL FROM ME: www.makeyourdamnbedpodcast.comTUNE IN ON INSTAGRAM FOR COOL CONTENT: www.instagram.com/mydbpodcastOR BE A REAL GEM + TUNE IN ON PATREON: www.patreon.com/MYDBpodcastOR WATCH ON YOUTUBE: www.youtube.com/juliemerica The opinions expressed by Julie Merica and Make Your Damn Bed Podcast are intended for entertainment purposes only. 1078 || "On the Pulse of Morning"
EMaya Angelou's poem "On the Pulse of the Morning" feels as relevant today as it did when she recited it on January 20, 1993. Tomorrow, we will dig into it. Here is the transcript: https://awpc.cattcenter.iastate.edu/2017/03/21/on-the-pulse-of-morning-jan-20-1993/A Rock, A River, A TreeHosts to species long since departed,Mark the mastodon. The dinosaur, who left dry tokensOf their sojourn hereOn our planet floor,Any broad alarm of their of their hastening doomIs lost in the gloom of dust and ages. But today, the Rock cries out to us, clearly, forcefully,Come, you may stand upon myBack and face your distant destiny,But seek no haven in my shadow.I will give you no hiding place down here. You, created only a little lower thanThe angels, have crouched too long inThe bruising darkness,Have lain too longFace down in ignorance.Your mouths spelling wordsArmed for slaughter.... I, the rock, I the river, I the treeI am yours--your passages have been paid.Lift up your faces, you have a piercing needFor this bright morning dawning for you.History, despite its wrenching pain,Cannot be unlived, and if faced with courage,Need not be lived again.Lift up your eyes uponThe day breaking for you.Give birth againTo the dream.Women, children, men,Take it into the palms of your hands.Mold it into the shape of your mostPrivate need. Sculpt it intoThe image of your most public self.Lift up your hearts. Each new hour holds new chancesFor new beginnings.Do not be wedded foreverTo fear, yoked eternallyTo brutishness. The horizon leans forward,Offering you space to place new steps of change. Here, on the pulse of this fine dayYou may have the courageTo look up and out upon me,The rock, the river, the tree, your country. No less to Midas than the mendicant. No less to you now than the mastodon then. Here on the pulse of this new dayYou may have the grace to look up and outAnd into your sister's eyes,Into your brother's face, your countryAnd say simplyVery simplyWith hopeGood morning." https://blogs.loc.gov/catbird/2021/02/on-the-pulse-of-morning-remembering-maya-angelou/https://awpc.cattcenter.iastate.edu/2017/03/21/on-the-pulse-of-morning-jan-20-1993/OR BE A REAL GEM + TUNE IN ON PATREON: www.patreon.com/MYDBpodcastOR WATCH ON YOUTUBE: www.youtube.com/juliemerica The opinions expressed by Julie Merica and Make Your Damn Bed Podcast are intended for entertainment purposes only. 1075 || Baldwin vs. Buckley
EThe Baldwin/Buckley Debate was a televised debate of The Cambridge Union Society held on 18th February 1965, which has since come to be seen as one of the most historic and influential intellectual debates on race relations in America. 1074 || James Baldwin's Pin Drop Speech
EToday's words are brought to you by the badass James Baldwin at a speech that is wildly still relevant today. "What is crucial here is that unless we can manage to accept, establish some kind of dialog between those people whom I pretend have paid for the American dream and those other people who have not achieved it, we will be in terrible trouble. I want to say, at the end, the last, is that is that is what concerns me most. We are sitting in this room, and we are all, at least I’d like to think we are, relatively civilized, and we can talk to each other at least on certain levels so that we could walk out of here assuming that the measure of our enlightenment, or at least, our politeness, has some effect on the world. It may not."RESOURCES: Readings: https://www.sas.upenn.edu/~cavitch/pdf-library/Baldwin_NewLost.pdfRecordings: https://ia903003.us.archive.org/21/items/FreeAndBraveASpeechByJamesBaldwin1963/James%20Baldwin%20-%20Pin%20Drop%20Speech.mp3Articles: https://www.harlemworldmagazine.com/harlems-james-baldwin-pin-drop-speech-cambridge-university-1965-video/https://www.theatlantic.com/entertainment/archive/2019/12/james-baldwin-william-f-buckley-debate/602695/ GET AN OCCASIONAL PERSONAL EMAIL FROM ME: www.makeyourdamnbedpodcast.comTUNE IN ON INSTAGRAM FOR COOL CONTENT: www.instagram.com/mydbpodcastOR BE A REAL GEM + TUNE IN ON PATREON: www.patreon.com/MYDBpodcastOR WATCH ON YOUTUBE: www.youtube.com/juliemerica The opinions expressed by Julie Merica and Make Your Damn Bed Podcast are intended for entertainment purposes only. 1073 || James Baldwin
Ehttps://nmaahc.si.edu/explore/stories/introduction-james-baldwin The human responsible for this quote: “It is very nearly impossible to become an educated person in a country so distrustful of the independent mind.”― James BaldwinIt is certain, in any case, that ignorance, allied with power, is the most ferocious enemy justice can have.—James BaldwinJames Arthur Baldwin (1924 – 1987) was born in Harlem, New York on August 2, 1924 to Emma Berdis Jones, originally from Deal Island, Maryland. Love is at the heart of the Baldwin philosophy. Love for Baldwin cannot be safe; it involves the risk of commitment, the risk of removing the masks and taboos placed on us by society. The philosophy applies to individual relationships as well as to more general ones. It encompasses sexuality as well as politics, economics, and race relations. And it emphasizes the dire consequences, for individuals and racial groups, of the refusal to love.— David Adams Leeming, James Baldwin: A Biography[192]GET AN OCCASIONAL PERSONAL EMAIL FROM ME: www.makeyourdamnbedpodcast.comTUNE IN ON INSTAGRAM FOR COOL CONTENT: www.instagram.com/mydbpodcastOR BE A REAL GEM + TUNE IN ON PATREON: www.patreon.com/MYDBpodcastOR WATCH ON YOUTUBE: www.youtube.com/juliemerica The opinions expressed by Julie Merica and Make Your Damn Bed Podcast are intended for entertainment purposes only. 1072 || new social studies standards
EI grew up in Florida. My dad was a public schoolteacher, and I went to a variety of public schools throughout certain phases of my life. All within Florida. Then, once I graduated, I extended my education at the University of South Florida with a degree in education, and I taught in public school system for several years before moving to Chicago. To say I have opinions on the school system, would be an understatement. But given the current political/educational climate in Florida, I feel like it’s really no longer avoidable. So what better time than now to address just how toxic and terrifying and genuinely disturbing it can be to see a government official explicitly and violently whitewashing history and banning books. If you were not familiar, in 2023, Ron DeSantis, alongside mothers of liberty and other financially sketchy groups, went through the Department of Education to alter the standards for learning in the public school system. Within several months, they had already banned over 300 books, and approved over 60% of some incredibly harmful instructional material submissions for social studies. Again for all public school students in Florida. These are the standards they will be tested on, and schools will be funded because of the teachings/adhereance to them. And if you’re like Julie, what books are they banning, maybe they’re bad? Let me remind everyone that books like, Ready player one, Anne Frank’s diary, antiracist baby, aren’t harming your kids. Mary Louise GAY is a name, but even if it weren't??? This is wild. If you’re like what kind of stuff did they add to curriculum, well, I have receipts for that too, I read the literal social studies “clarifications” and my personal pearl clutch came when I read these words, and no others on this page: Benchmark Clarifications: Clarification 1: Instruction includes how slaves developed skills which, in some instances, could be applied for their personal benefit.RESOURCES: https://www.aclufl.org/en/issues/students-youth-rightsGET AN OCCASIONAL PERSONAL EMAIL FROM ME: www.makeyourdamnbedpodcast.comTUNE IN ON INSTAGRAM FOR COOL CONTENT: www.instagram.com/mydbpodcastOR BE A REAL GEM + TUNE IN ON PATREON: www.patreon.com/MYDBpodcastOR WATCH ON YOUTUBE: www.youtube.com/juliemerica The opinions expressed by Julie Merica and Make Your Damn Bed Podcast are intended for entertainment purposes only. 1067 || artist's way || week 3 day 2
E"There are certain rules of the road useful in dealing with any form of criticism. 1. Receive the criticism all the way through and get it over with. 2. Jot down notes to yourself on what concepts or phrases bother you. 3. Jot down notes on what concepts or phrases seem useful. 4. Do something very nurturing for yourself—read an old good review or recall a compliment. 5. Remember that even if you have made a truly rotten piece of art, it may be a necessary stepping-stone to your next work. Art matures spasmodically and requires ugly-duckling growth stages. 6. Look at the criticism again. Does it remind you of any criticism from your past—particularly shaming childhood criticism? Acknowledge to yourself that the current criticism is triggering grief over a longstanding wound. 7. Write a letter to the critic—not to be mailed, most probably. Defend your work and acknowledge what was helpful, if anything, in the criticism proffered. 8. Get back on the horse. Make an immediate commitment to do something creative. 9. Do it. Creativity is the only cure for criticism." - JULIA CAMERON Listen to my take on week one here: https://shows.acast.com/6152264dc28ad2001383af42/episodes/1033-artists-way-week-1 Listen to my take on week two here: https://shows.acast.com/6152264dc28ad2001383af42/episodes/1048-the-artists-way-week-2-going-sane RESOURCES: https://juliacameronlive.com/GET AN OCCASIONAL PERSONAL EMAIL FROM ME: www.makeyourdamnbedpodcast.comTUNE IN ON INSTAGRAM FOR COOL CONTENT: www.instagram.com/mydbpodcastOR BE A REAL GEM + TUNE IN ON PATREON: www.patreon.com/MYDBpodcastOR WATCH ON YOUTUBE: www.youtube.com/juliemerica The opinions expressed by Julie Merica and Make Your Damn Bed Podcast are intended for entertainment purposes only. EArtist’s Way Week 3: Listen to my take on week one here: https://shows.acast.com/6152264dc28ad2001383af42/episodes/1033-artists-way-week-1 Listen to my take on week two here: https://shows.acast.com/6152264dc28ad2001383af42/episodes/1048-the-artists-way-week-2-going-sane Margin quote: ‘Take your life in our own hands and what happens? A terrible thing: no one to blame.’—Erica JongJulia Cameron says: "ANGER IS FUEL. We feel it and we want to do something. Hit someone, break something, throw a fit, smash a fist into the wall, tell those bastards. But we are nice people, and what we do with our anger is stuff it, deny it, bury it, block it, hide it, lie about it, medicate it, muffle it, ignore it. We do everything but listen to it. Anger is meant to be listened to. Anger is a voice, a shout, a plea, a demand. Anger is meant to be respected. Why? Because anger is a map. Anger shows us what our boundaries are. Anger shows us where we want to go. It lets us see where we’ve been and lets us know when we haven’t liked it. Anger points the way, not just the finger. In the recovery of a blocked artist, anger is a sign of health. Anger is meant to be acted upon. It is not meant to be acted out. Anger points the direction. We are meant to use anger as fuel to take the actions we need to move where our anger points us. With a little thought, we can usually translate the message that our anger is sending us."RESOURCES: https://juliacameronlive.com/GET AN OCCASIONAL PERSONAL EMAIL FROM ME: www.makeyourdamnbedpodcast.comTUNE IN ON INSTAGRAM FOR COOL CONTENT: www.instagram.com/mydbpodcastOR BE A REAL GEM + TUNE IN ON PATREON: www.patreon.com/MYDBpodcastOR WATCH ON YOUTUBE: www.youtube.com/juliemerica The opinions expressed by Julie Merica and Make Your Damn Bed Podcast are intended for entertainment purposes only. 1064 || emotional avoidance
EGreenberg, the creator of EFT, specified six principles of the approach:1. Emotional awareness: The first step involves knowing what you're feeling. Naming what you feel can help you reconnect to your needs.2. Emotional expression: EFT seeks to help you overcome emotional avoidance, often by dismantling unhelpful beliefs, like "Anger is dangerous," that prevent you from healthy emotional expression.3. Reflection: This component involves reflecting on the "why" behind your emotions. A better understanding of where they come from and what triggers them can help you work through them.4. Regulation: This key element of EFT involves increasing your ability to self-soothe when powerful emotions come up, rather than letting them take over. Your therapist might teach you distraction, breathing, and positive self-talk techniques to use in emotionally distressing situations.5. Corrective emotional experiences: This involves dealing with unhelpful emotions in new ways. For example, a therapist can teach you how to replace shame or self-disgust with a more healing emotion, like acceptance.6. Transformation: You work to achieve this by tapping into a different emotion to transform one that's not serving you. Say you experience fear after a traumatic event. You might instead lean into your underlying anger, a more active emotion you can channel into defining personal boundaries or identifying red flags. This may feel more empowering than feeling trapped by a passive emotion, like fear.GET AN OCCASIONAL PERSONAL EMAIL FROM ME: www.makeyourdamnbedpodcast.comTUNE IN ON INSTAGRAM FOR COOL CONTENT: www.instagram.com/mydbpodcastOR BE A REAL GEM + TUNE IN ON PATREON: www.patreon.com/MYDBpodcastOR WATCH ON YOUTUBE: www.youtube.com/juliemerica The opinions expressed by Julie Merica and Make Your Damn Bed Podcast are intended for entertainment purposes only. 1063 || self awareness without self consciousness
Etherapeutic emphasis should always prioritize your lived experience.life is uncertain, that doesn't mean your life has to feel that way. life has limitations, that doesn't mean you have to feel limited. becoming self aware, means we can approach our lives with curiosity rather than fear. self-awareness doesn't have to translate to self-consciousness, it just may take practice to untie the two from each other.RESOURCE: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK64939/GET AN OCCASIONAL PERSONAL EMAIL FROM ME: www.makeyourdamnbedpodcast.comTUNE IN ON INSTAGRAM FOR COOL CONTENT: www.instagram.com/mydbpodcastOR BE A REAL GEM + TUNE IN ON PATREON: www.patreon.com/MYDBpodcastOR WATCH ON YOUTUBE: www.youtube.com/juliemerica The opinions expressed by Julie Merica and Make Your Damn Bed Podcast are intended for entertainment purposes only. 1059 || we're all just middle managers
EIf I’ve learned anything from getting older, it’s that we’re all middle managers of our emotions, our energies, our moods, our feelings, and our experiences. I’ve had a lot of different types of managers in the past that have taught me things about how I showed Innman and by recognizing my own capabilities and limitations and knowing what I actually enjoy as a manager I could slowly start to enjoy the process of managing my moods, emotions, energy, and so on the second, I could separate a traditional managing role from the thousands of different types of managing there really is in this world that can often feel really fulfilling and profitable and progressive managing styles. 1055 || perspective check || "momfluencer" culture + rage bait
EIt feels like shit to recognize your privilege for the first time. But once you see it, you can use that privilege to uplift or provoke. Some things are nuanced, and this one DEFINITELY is. I find it fascinating and important to have perspective and recognize that perspective is only afforded to those who aren't in survival mode (which a rich heiress would never understand, and I wish nobody had do understand, but I digress...)Point is, society is broken, you aren't. You're in fact in the very lucky and beautiful window of humanity which are willing to see society has "painted over the light the the end of our tunnel, and it's going to take a community effort to stop the flow of paint, or chip away at the paint that is there" and that's fucking beautiful. Truly, no shade to https://ballerinafarm.com/ I actually learned a lot from the content. But it's a brand! Not a realistic portrayal of one human. 1050 || bonobos + chimps || a conspiracy theory
EI had such a great time talking about pigeons, I figured we could have some fun discussing other animals. Today, specifically, we are talking about one of my favorites but the chronically underrated “bonobos”. I’ve only ever really thought about bonobos during a college anthropology class, and then they kinda fell off the radar for me. Chimpanzees won the pop culture and research award and left bonobos in the dust. I’ve read there is a vested interest in making sure that we (the general public) learn about chimp culture more than bonobo culture because it would provide us with support and e vidence that we could do better as a society, and at this point, knowing what I know about bonobos (and society) - it would not surprise me if that were the case - but I digress. But contrary to your 3rd grade science teacher’s beliefs: humans closest relative is not just the chimpanzee. 1047 || news from The Hague
The Hague refers to both a city and a region in the Netherlands. As a city, The Hague is one of the major cities in the country and serves as the seat of the Dutch government, housing the parliament, the prime minister's office, and the monarch's workplace. Additionally, The Hague is known for hosting various international organizations and courts. One of the most notable international institutions based in The Hague is the International Court of Justice (ICJ), which is the principal judicial organ of the United Nations. The ICJ settles legal disputes between states and provides advisory opinions on legal questions referred to it by the UN General Assembly, the UN Security Council, or other specialized agencies.Furthermore, The Hague is home to the International Criminal Court (ICC), which prosecutes individuals for the most serious international crimes, such as genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity. In summary, The Hague is a city in the Netherlands with significant international importance, particularly in the realms of international law and diplomacy.SIGN a petition for ceasefire here: https://www.jewishvoiceforpeace.org/resource/ceasefire/RESOURCES: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Hague https://www.npr.org/2024/01/12/1224363666/israel-hamas-war-palestinians-south-africa-genocide-case-court https://www.pbs.org/newshour/world/watch-south-africa-tells-top-un-court-israel-is-committing-genocide-in-gaza-in-landmark-case#:~:text=THE%20HAGUE%2C%20Netherlands%20(AP),Israeli%20military%20operations%20in%20Gaza.https://theintercept.com/2024/01/11/south-africa-israel-genocide-charges/ GET AN OCCASIONAL PERSONAL EMAIL FROM ME: www.makeyourdamnbedpodcast.comTUNE IN ON INSTAGRAM FOR COOL CONTENT: www.instagram.com/mydbpodcastOR BE A REAL GEM + TUNE IN ON PATREON: www.patreon.com/MYDBpodcastOR WATCH ON YOUTUBE: www.youtube.com/juliemerica The opinions expressed by Julie Merica and Make Your Damn Bed Podcast are intended for entertainment purposes only. 1045 || hopeful options
E“Keep a little fire burning; however small, however hidden.” — Cormac McCarthyHope is fundamental to human existence. It is paradoxical in its duality, however, as its very existence implies the possibility of despair (Lynch, 1962). This dialectic between hope and despair is central to considerations of chronic illness management, as well as to studies of the relationship between expectations and the placebo effect (Corbett, et al., 2007; Ratcliffe, 2011). Hope influences expectation, but is a distinct and multifaceted cognitive, embodied, and broadly existential experience (Mattingly, 2010). In order to maintain hope when faced with a situation that appears hopeless, individuals must navigate multiple contradictions between reality and possibility, embrace cultural notions of what is deemed acceptable to hope for, and be attentive to the hopes and concerns of significant others (Averill and Sundararajan, 2005; Chesla, 2005; DelVecchio Good, et al., 1990; Sulmasy, et al., 2010; Brown, 2015).RESOURCE: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4721951/GET AN OCCASIONAL PERSONAL EMAIL FROM ME: www.makeyourdamnbedpodcast.comTUNE IN ON INSTAGRAM FOR COOL CONTENT: www.instagram.com/mydbpodcastOR BE A REAL GEM + TUNE IN ON PATREON: www.patreon.com/MYDBpodcastOR WATCH ON YOUTUBE: www.youtube.com/juliemerica The opinions expressed by Julie Merica and Make Your Damn Bed Podcast are intended for entertainment purposes only. 1043 || book club || I who have never known men
Econtent warning: today's episode has brief mention of heavy trauma. "I Who Have Never Known Men" is a science fiction novel written by Jacqueline Harpman, a Belgian author. The original French title is "Moi qui n'ai pas connu les hommes," and it was published in 1995. It explores themes of identity, survival, humanity, curiosity, hope, and yearning. This book wrecked me, but in a very good way. That said, it's not for everyone at every juncture in life. oldlampshades said this, which sadly, I didn't include in today's episode, but better late than never: "What I love about this book is that it’s a story of a human with so much of her humanity stolen from her, yet she still finds herself asking the most fundamentally human questions: why am I here? What does it all mean? It’s a story about how even when born into a society so different from any that exists now, humans will always find love, hope, and wonder.I think what makes it a masterpiece is that we don’t get any of the answers. There isn’t a neatly tied up ending. It makes the book an allegory for life, because we don’t get the answers to those questions, really."RESOURCES: https://www.overdrive.com/media/4678018/i-who-have-never-known-menhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I_Who_Have_Never_Known_Men https://www.goodreads.com/en/book/show/11996 https://www.reddit.com/r/books/comments/10ts2rc/i_just_finished_i_who_have_never_known_men_by/ GET AN OCCASIONAL PERSONAL EMAIL FROM ME: www.makeyourdamnbedpodcast.comTUNE IN ON INSTAGRAM FOR COOL CONTENT: www.instagram.com/mydbpodcastOR BE A REAL GEM + TUNE IN ON PATREON: www.patreon.com/MYDBpodcastOR WATCH ON YOUTUBE: www.youtube.com/juliemerica The opinions expressed by Julie Merica and Make Your Damn Bed Podcast are intended for entertainment purposes only. 1042 || existential ennui
Eyou are a human being not a human doing. Contrary to the structures and powers and systems that have convinced us otherwise, you aren’t supposed to be doing and stressing all fucking day every day. In fact, you’re supposed to be prioritizing yourself before juggling all the other shit. Listen, I truly understand that this IS a privileged take that sounds like it cannot apply to everybody in this hellscape, i get that. Some of us are truly juggling demanding jobs/kids/pets/brains/ livelihoods and I never want to underestimate that - BUT as counter-intuitive as it sounds, the reminder still stands, YOU are allowed to just be. Even for 30 seconds at a time, shit involve those demanding customers, kids, pets, friends if you have to. But take 10 seconds when you can to just sit in silence. And steal away every moment you can to sit. Sit and do diddly fucking shit. And don’t ever feel guilty about it. If you need to justify it - ill remind you that according to neuroscientists, boredom has gotten a bum rap, and it can actually amp up your creativity, task engagement and job productivity. there are thousands of definitions of boredom. it's all in how you interpret + respond. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4217586/https://iep.utm.edu/boredom/GET AN OCCASIONAL PERSONAL EMAIL FROM ME: www.makeyourdamnbedpodcast.comTUNE IN ON INSTAGRAM FOR COOL CONTENT: www.instagram.com/mydbpodcastOR BE A REAL GEM + TUNE IN ON PATREON: www.patreon.com/MYDBpodcastOR WATCH ON YOUTUBE: www.youtube.com/juliemerica The opinions expressed by Julie Merica and Make Your Damn Bed Podcast are intended for entertainment purposes only. E Stop over-intellectualizing everything to avoid the feeling part and let yourself actually feel the damn thing. And listen, I’m no therapist, but I feel like resisting that feeling portion is just prolonging its lifespan in your body. You gotta move through it, but you can’t move through it unless you let it move through you, first. I read something once (that I’ll never question because it made sense) that said the physical effects of an emotion only peak for about 90 seconds and I feel like I can write anything out for 90 seconds. So, all that cheesy meditative nonsense that you have heard about riding it out and feeling it in your body. Do that! Let yourself feel without judgement as best you can because sure, some emotions will suck, they will feel bad, you will feel bad in them. But they are there for a reason not a season, so let them in to leave their lil message and send them on their way. Otherwise, they’ll continue to haunt you, forever. Instead of letting your insecurity stifle you let it guide you it’s a lighthouse not a destination the light there is to tell you where it is so that you can either go towards it or away from it, depending on where your navigation is pointed. 1040 || pep talk for sad friends compilation
EEven baddies get the saddies: Anybody who’s been feeling a little down or slow in their healing process but they’re still trying to show up? Well, this one is for everybody, but it’s mostly for you. Your experiences are what got you to where you are right now; they cannot be changed, the past cannot be altered. It is a part of your story now and objectively. It is an undeniably beautiful story. It’s rich with highs and lows, ups and downs, but you choose to show up and choose things that feel like healing day in and day out year after year even after occasional slip up, no matter how tough shit really gets for you??? Well, that’s extremely rare energy. that said - you may have to confront some demons that you may have been running from for a while, but in order for them to stop showing up in your life as demons we do need to face them, head the fuck on. And you are absolutely capable of doing that with the appropriate support.
