1259 || the HEAR technique to bridge gaps
EFour Steps to Help People Feel Listened To:H = Hedge your claims, even when you feel very certain about your beliefs. It signals a recognition that there are some cases or some people who might support your opponent’s perspective.E = Emphasize agreement. Find some common ground even when you disagree on a particular topic. This does not mean compromising or changing your mind, but rather recognizing that most people in the world can find some broad ideas or values to agree on.A = Acknowledge the opposing perspective. Rather than jumping in to your own argument, devote a few seconds to restating the other person’s position to demonstrate that you did indeed hear and understand it.R = Reframing to the positive. Avoid negative and contradictory words, such as “no,” “won’t” or “do not.” At the same time, increase your use of positive words to change the tone of the conversation.RESOURCE: https://greatergood.berkeley.edu/article/item/four_steps_to_help_people_feel_listened_to AND: https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/how-the-brain-copes-with-grief/ DONATE:www.pcrf.netGet Involved:Operation Olive Branch: Spreadsheets + LinksGET AN OCCASIONAL PERSONAL EMAIL FROM ME: www.makeyourdamnbedpodcast.comTUNE IN ON INSTAGRAM FOR COOL CONTENT: www.instagram.com/mydbpodcastOR BE A REAL GEM + TUNE IN ON PATREON: www.patreon.com/MYDBpodcastOR WATCH ON YOUTUBE: www.youtube.com/juliemerica The opinions expressed by Julie Merica and Make Your Damn Bed Podcast are intended for entertainment purposes only. 1258 || final thoughts on grief
EGrief isn’t linear. Grief doesn't happen in stages. Grief is chaotic. Grief convinces you that it’s all encompassing. There’s no right or wrong way to grieve (aside from the obvious). Be gentle with yourself. I’m not asking you to pretend it doesn't exist, but I am asking you to endure it. It’s going to be okay. It’s going to be different, but it will be okay. 1257 || grief is emotional chaos
EI recently received a request for resources on grief and loss, and I’ve collected a lot over the years because I’ve never been the most efficient at dealing with my grief; and although I don’t think grief is something that ever fully goes away, I do know from experience (and the wisdom that comes from it) - that it won’t always be unbearable. 1254 || dealing with decision fatigue
EIn 1998, Psychologist Roy Baumeister conducted a foundational study that showed decision-making depletes cognitive resources, much like physical exertion depletes muscles. Baumeister’s studies found that decision fatigue leads to impulsive choices (gravitating toward immediate rewards or default options) or avoidance of decision-making (procrastination or refusal to choose). For example, judges in a 2011 study were more likely to grant parole early in the day, and less likely as they became mentally fatigued, demonstrating how mental depletion affects critical decision-making.So, preplan what you can. Limit excess decision making. Account for much needed rest + recovery. Rely on default decisions where applicable. Know + respect your limits. Practice mindfulness + compassion. Be patient. Remember you're human. 1253 || regret from a life not lived
EYears ago, when I was grieving the loss of a very serious break up, I was explaining to a friend that the grief was really intense not only because I was grieving a loss of this, but I was also grieving the loss of who I was going to be with that person, and I think about this a lot, the anxiety of all of the un lived lives. I’ll never get the unknown of all of the paths I didn’t and couldn’t take.TIPS: Practice radical acceptance: Accept that you can't live every life. For every door you open, another closes.Get present: Ground yourself in the life you're living right now. Try mindfulness exercises to bring you back to the present moment.Embrace "good enough": Aim for a life that's good enough, not perfect.Reframe your past: View your past choices as steps in your unique journey, rather than as failures.Live authentically: Make decisions based on your values—not societal expectations.DISASTER ASSISTANCE FOR THOSE WITH DISABILITIES:https://www.disasterassistance.gov/information/people-with-disabilitiesDISASTER RELIEF MUTUAL AID: https://mutualaiddisasterrelief.org/ASHEVILLE MUTUAL AID LINKS: https://www.rjcavl.org/mutual-aid-resources/MORE ASHEVILLE RESOURCES: https://linktr.ee/avlsurvivalTHE RESOURCES FROM GW University: https:// onlinepublichealth.gwu.edu/resources/sources-for-climate-news/MORE RESOURCES: 350.org AND https://hiphopcaucus.org/action-center/DONATE:www.pcrf.netGet Involved:Operation Olive Branch: Spreadsheets + LinksGET AN OCCASIONAL PERSONAL EMAIL FROM ME: www.makeyourdamnbedpodcast.comTUNE IN ON INSTAGRAM FOR COOL CONTENT: www.instagram.com/mydbpodcastOR BE A REAL GEM + TUNE IN ON PATREON: www.patreon.com/MYDBpodcastOR WATCH ON YOUTUBE: www.youtube.com/juliemerica The opinions expressed by Julie Merica and Make Your Damn Bed Podcast are intended for entertainment purposes only. 1250 || burning out + tapping out
ELife sometimes feels like a constant battle between fighting burnout and fighting tapping out. The middle path between burnout and disassociation isn’t about perfection. It’s about giving yourself permission to rest without checking out, and working without burning out. It’s not an easy balance, but it’s one worth striving for. Some days will be meant for rotting, some days will be meant for grinding - but most days will be about striking a healthy balance between the two. 1244 || hope in the dark
E"What could have happened if we could have spoken directly to the people in that wave, if we could have found common ground, if we could have made our position neither right nor left but truly grassroots? What would have happened if we had given them an alternate version of how local power was being sapped, by whom, and what they might do about it? We need them, we need a broad base, we need a style that speaks to far more people than the left has lately been able to speak to and for." - Rebecca SolnitBUY THE BOOK: https://www.haymarketbooks.org/books/791-hope-in-the-dark READ FROM THE BOOK: https://blogs.helsinki.fi/vallisaari/files/2018/06/Solnit_Hope_in_the_dark.pdfTHE AUTHOR: http://rebeccasolnit.net/THE RESOURCES FROM GW University: https:// onlinepublichealth.gwu.edu/resources/sources-for-climate-news/MORE RESOURCES: 350.org AND https://hiphopcaucus.org/action-center/DONATE:www.pcrf.netGet Involved:Operation Olive Branch: Spreadsheets + LinksGET AN OCCASIONAL PERSONAL EMAIL FROM ME: www.makeyourdamnbedpodcast.comTUNE IN ON INSTAGRAM FOR COOL CONTENT: www.instagram.com/mydbpodcastOR BE A REAL GEM + TUNE IN ON PATREON: www.patreon.com/MYDBpodcastOR WATCH ON YOUTUBE: www.youtube.com/juliemerica The opinions expressed by Julie Merica and Make Your Damn Bed Podcast are intended for entertainment purposes only. 1243 || victory is the journey
E"Paradise is not the place in which you arrive but the journey toward it. Sometimes I think victories must be temporary or incomplete; what kind of humanity would survive paradise? The United States has tried to approximate paradise in its suburbias, with luxe, calme, volupte, culde-sacs, cable television and two-car garages, and it has produced a soft ennui that shades over into despair and a decay of the soul suggesting that Paradise is already a gulag. Countless desperate teenagers will tell you so. For paradise does not require of us courage, selflessness, creativity, passion: paradise in all accounts is passive, is sedative, and if you read carefully, soulless." - Rebecca SolnitBUY THE BOOK: https://www.haymarketbooks.org/books/791-hope-in-the-dark READ FROM THE BOOK: https://blogs.helsinki.fi/vallisaari/files/2018/06/Solnit_Hope_in_the_dark.pdfTHE AUTHOR: http://rebeccasolnit.net/THE RESOURCES FROM GW University: https:// onlinepublichealth.gwu.edu/resources/sources-for-climate-news/MORE RESOURCES: 350.org AND https://hiphopcaucus.org/action-center/DONATE:www.pcrf.netGet Involved:Operation Olive Branch: Spreadsheets + LinksGET AN OCCASIONAL PERSONAL EMAIL FROM ME: www.makeyourdamnbedpodcast.comTUNE IN ON INSTAGRAM FOR COOL CONTENT: www.instagram.com/mydbpodcastOR BE A REAL GEM + TUNE IN ON PATREON: www.patreon.com/MYDBpodcastOR WATCH ON YOUTUBE: www.youtube.com/juliemerica The opinions expressed by Julie Merica and Make Your Damn Bed Podcast are intended for entertainment purposes only. 1240 || peace movements + their butterfly effect
Echanging the world is not one with a tidy end goal that we will one day reach. it is an ever changing process that means we will always be working with it. and everything counts. no strategy is too small, as it often surprises us what actually makes change stick. the complexities are undeniable, but the straightforward knowing of what is right vs. what is wrong isn't complicated. we simply need to fight for the rights of all people and the planet, all the time. 1239 || hope in despair
Ethere is power in active hope. despair can even be liberatory if we can learn not to be consumed by it. despair can turn us away from the deprivation that comes from refusing to seek out alternatives. if nothing else, please don't get attached to negative outcomes - even if they feel like the most realistic potential. hope should never been confined to certain limits. 1237 || what we can do about the climate emergency

1232 || external validation
EThe need for validation is normal. But, like most things in life, it’s really all about balance. Listen, some degree of attention and validation seeking makes perfect sense to me. From an evolutionary standpoint, it makes sense that we’d seek out external validation because it helps us to feel more secure in social settings and I dunno if you know this, but humans are inherently social creatures and rejection is deeply uncomfortable while positive reinforcement feels pretty ding-dang incredible. The problem is, constantly hunting for approval is not a sustainable way to live. When validation comes from external sources, self-esteem becomes contingent on others’ opinions, making it vulnerable to fluctuations based on approval or criticism. EReasoning with the unreasonable can feel impossible, but here are some techniques to diffuse intense arguments and encourage others to challenge their own cognitive dissonance with curiosity and care. For starters, it's important to find common values to come back to, use metaphors and anecdotes to break down complex ideas and humanize them, remember it's you vs. the problem (not you vs. them), and remember that you're attempting to better understand each other - rather than change each other. EHow do we reason with someone who is experiencing cognitive dissonance? For example: I know people who claim to believe in free speech but also support banning pronoun usage, race discussion, and even certain books in schools. How do we rectify the dissonance they've created to support two contradictory ideas?Unfortunately we can't change other people, but we can help them towards the path of changing themselves. With gentle, genuine questions, we can help them to reflect on where the disconnect lies. Timing and tone are essential pieces to this puzzle, but like with most things, we can get better at it with practice + patience. 1219 || the social withdrawal cycle
EThere is a feedback loop that seems to happen whenever I’m spending more time alone. I notice that my need for connection seems to dissipate as my anger towards humanity inflates. Psychologists have noted this through various research and confirmed that “lonely individuals tend to think more negatively of others and see them as less trustworthy.”If the feeling of loneliness really worked as it should, it would prompt prosocial behaviors that fulfill our need for belonging. It’s like a craving. Our bodies are craving social connection, so we should then seek it out to rectify that craving. But unfortunately, that’s not always the case. Especially for me. Basically, when you feel lonely, you probably also feel more depressed, which means you’re not feeling like your most “you, you”. And because you feel a bit unpleasant, it can exacerbate these issues. Scientists have long studied the correlation between depression symptoms and loneliness, but there seems to be less focus on the cyclical nature of these implications. The study I’ve been referring to did its best to track the associations between these feelings of loneliness and prosocial behaviors. Apparently this means the results from this study came with two distinct findings: Loneliness often comes with:An increase in motivation to support others, but a poorer interpretation or execration of that social contact. That idea that we want + seek out connections but feel an absence of soothing and support still, is the part that tends to push us further in the cycle of loneliness and despair. I thought it was interesting though, that it wasn’t just relationships with others we tend to be more negative about, when we’re lonely. According to the study, we also tend to evaluate ourselves more negatively as well. This lower sense of self confidence means that the odds are stacked against us. We feel lonely, so we feel more insecure, AND we feel more hesitant to let others in, which causes a validation of those negative biases. 1217 || i'm lonely (and it isn't really my fault)
EI'm on my way out the door of my apartment and it's starting to hit me just how isolated I've become. A lot of it is self inflicted: ignoring phone calls and texts, neglecting plans, or foregoing the follow up. That said, I still can't take all the credit. A majority of my feelings of isolation are systemic: it's expensive outside, I'm exhausted all the time, and I don't feel that connected to my neighbors (who don't always see eye-to-eye with me). So, let's talk about it and see if we can start a more "upward cycle" towards connectedness rather than isolation. 1213 || critiquing the stoics
ELike most philosophies, I have notes - but that's not to say I can't learn something from the practice of stoicism. Today we talk about some of the paradoxes and some of the common critiques, but then we dig into the 3 core values of stoicism. 1211 || staying hopeful (emergent strategy)
E"This is an intergenerational, evolved evolutionary movement. They never looked out for each other the way that a lot of the groups I see organizing are looking out for each other. They didn’t have rest. They didn’t ‘watch out for our own patriarchal natures’ and all of this stuff. There’s a reason why a lot of those people died young. We are doing so much and we are, I believe, a part of a foundational evolution for humans on the planet. But this awareness is: this violence has got us.So we are in the war zone. And I think anybody who’s in the war zone feels that sense that you’re feeling, like we’re all here together trying to make something change. And we can’t, because that’s what it is, it is war and then creating the laws that support war and taking all of the resources to support war.It feels like a failure because its intention is to make us feel like we’re failing, and its intention is to keep us quiet, and its intention is to steal. You feel the way that they intend for you to feel. The difference is, we know that we are not just here on this particular plane doing this particular work — we are a wider circle. We need to cast into that energy of our spirit and our ancestral and our future selves. That’s what I’m holding on to." - Toshi Reagon RESOURCE: https://adriennemareebrown.net/https://toshireagon.com/AND https://adriennemareebrown.net/2024/07/03/toshi-she-gather-me-artists-talking/ DONATE:www.pcrf.netGet Involved:Operation Olive Branch: Spreadsheets + LinksGET AN OCCASIONAL PERSONAL EMAIL FROM ME: www.makeyourdamnbedpodcast.comTUNE IN ON INSTAGRAM FOR COOL CONTENT: www.instagram.com/mydbpodcastOR BE A REAL GEM + TUNE IN ON PATREON: www.patreon.com/MYDBpodcastOR WATCH ON YOUTUBE: www.youtube.com/juliemerica The opinions expressed by Julie Merica and Make Your Damn Bed Podcast are intended for entertainment purposes only. 1210 || when it feels bad to feel good
EI have started to feel so guilty about positive feelings lately. I think it's because I've become a bit more comfortable with the stress that has become an undercurrent of my daily life lately. That said, there are plenty of strategies to restore joy, hope, and excitement. I just have to get better at implementing them. 1209 || questioning your thoughts
EOne technique often used in CBT is socratic questioning and it's a really great way to get ahold of our negative thinking patterns. They're usually open ended questions that encourage us to "think about thinking"in a more productive way. 1208 || cognitive behavioral therapy 101
EWhen I first heard about CBT, I was annoyed. It felt generic, but that's because of how I learned about it. When I started applying the appropriate techniques to my specific situation, I realized how much the techniques can really affect (and improve) my life. Today we discuss what CBT is, and eventually we will get into the techniques that have helped me overcome my personal issues. 1207 || how to build self awareness using time travel (revisited)
Etoday we're revisiting episode 1011 which was all about the "time traveling" we must do to discover our sense of self. by learning how to listen to the past, envision the future, and accommodate the present, we expand our sense of self to align within this current time in our lives. how does the sense of self affect how we behave? how does our self referential identity create our reality? and do we have a say in changing it? i think we do. 1206 || there is good stuff all around you
EWhen things become familiar to us, we no longer acknowledge them. The drone of cicadas in the background becomes impossible to hear unless you’re really listening. The pile of papers on the table becomes impossible to see unless you’re reminded they need to move. Things that no longer pose a threat, become obsolete to our focus. This is the same thing that happens with “the good stuff”. There is good stuff buzzing all around us, all day, every day. But because it doesn’t pose a threat, our brains set it aside as safe, and eventually we start to ignore the good altogether. Sometimes the change is the thing we notice + we tend to emphasize the discomfort we feel from the transition, rather than the comfort we receive once we’re settled into the change.DONATE:www.pcrf.netGet Involved:Operation Olive Branch: Spreadsheets + LinksGET AN OCCASIONAL PERSONAL EMAIL FROM ME: www.makeyourdamnbedpodcast.comTUNE IN ON INSTAGRAM FOR COOL CONTENT: www.instagram.com/mydbpodcastOR BE A REAL GEM + TUNE IN ON PATREON: www.patreon.com/MYDBpodcastOR WATCH ON YOUTUBE: www.youtube.com/juliemerica The opinions expressed by Julie Merica and Make Your Damn Bed Podcast are intended for entertainment purposes only.
