1398 || The Empathy Exams
EEmpathy involves listening to and validating other people's experiences, even when they challenge our own beliefs. Can empathy be learned, or is it an innate quality? Empathy is not perfect but its limitations don't diminish its importance.Just because you have to try, it doesn't mean your empathy isn't genuine. Empathy is an active practice that requires us to step out of ourselves and allow space for that imperfection. 1397 || Dana Fisher's Apocalyptic Optimism
E"It’s time for us to all be apocalyptic optimists: prepared for the shocks that are coming and ready to rally as activists, disruptors and bridge builders. Together, we can pressure the state and the market to adopt the changes that our communities require to survive. Here's my advice about how to be the change makers we need." - Dana FisherClimate shocks are a stark reminder of what’s at stake, but they don’t have to be the only catalyst for change. By acting now: through policy reform, grassroots organizing, environmental justice, and technological innovation, we can work to prevent the worst impacts of the climate crisis and build a more just and sustainable future. The power to shape our future is in our hands. Every active stance we take today, reduces the need for reactive responses tomorrow.Resources: Dana's Ted Talk: https://www.ted.com/talks/dana_r_fisher_how_to_be_an_apocalyptic_optimistDana Fisher's Website: https://danarfisher.com/DONATE: www.pcrf.netGet Involved:Operation Olive Branch: Spreadsheets + LinksGET AN OCCASIONAL PERSONAL EMAIL FROM ME: www.makeyourdamnbedpodcast.comTUNE IN ON INSTAGRAM FOR COOL CONTENT: www.instagram.com/mydbpodcastOR BE A REAL GEM + TUNE IN ON PATREON: www.patreon.com/MYDBpodcastOR WATCH ON YOUTUBE: www.youtube.com/juliemerica The opinions expressed by Julie Merica and Make Your Damn Bed Podcast are intended for entertainment purposes only. EGroupthink is a psychological phenomenon that occurs within a group of people in which the desire for harmony or conformity Cohesiveness, or the desire for cohesiveness, in a group may produce a tendency among its members to agree at all costs. 1393 || anarchist calisthenics
E"You know, you and especially your grandparents could have used more of a spirit of lawbreaking. One day you will be called on to break a big law in the name of justice and rationality. Everything will depend on it. You have to be ready. How are you going to prepare for that day when it really matters? You have to stay ‘in shape’ so that when the big day comes you will be ready. What you need is ‘anarchist calisthenics.’ Every day or so break some trivial law that makes no sense, even if it’s only jaywalking. Use your own head to judge whether a law is just or reasonable. That way, you’ll keep trim; and when the big day comes, you’ll be ready.”" - James C. ScottThe Resource: "Two Cheers for Anarchism" by James C. 1392 || 2 cheers for anarchism || PART 2
E"Democratic institutions have, to a great extent, become commodities themselves, offered up for auction to the highest bidder. If relative equality is a necessary condition of mutuality and freedom, how can it be guaranteed except through the state? Facing this conundrum, I believe that both theoretically and practically, the abolition of the state is not an option. 1388 || keeping the faith in humanity
EThere are no perfect revolutionaries, and Gandhi is no exception, but that doesn't mean we can't learn from their work. So, as Gandhi reminds us, "We must never lose our faith in humanity.”And he's right. 1387 || "people get ready" by rebecca solnit
E"... we shall not flag or fail. We shall go on to the end. We shall fight in the Bronx and along the border, we shall fight in the national parks and forests, we shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength in the streets, we shall defend our nation, whatever the cost may be. We shall fight on the public beaches, we shall fight to protect the public lands, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills; we shall never surrender. And even if, which I do not for a moment believe, this nation or a large part of it were subjugated and starving, then our teenagers and youth would carry on the struggle, until, in God's good time, the New World that is our beautiful multicultural future, with all its renewable power and grassroots might, steps forth to the rescue and the liberation of the Old." - Winston Churchill "I don't know when this regime will end or how, but I know that it will, and that we have a role to play in that and whatever comes after." - Rebecca SolnitThe source: https://www.meditationsinanemergency.com/people-get-ready/Choose Democracy's mailing list: Choose DemocracyHandbook for nonviolent resistance campaigns: https://www.nonviolent-conflict.org/resource/handbook-for-nonviolent-campaigns/Join an affinity Group:Resistance Rangers https://indivisible.org/groups Third ActTesla TakedownDONATE:www.pcrf.netGet Involved:Operation Olive Branch: Spreadsheets + LinksGET AN OCCASIONAL PERSONAL EMAIL FROM ME: www.makeyourdamnbedpodcast.comTUNE IN ON INSTAGRAM FOR COOL CONTENT: www.instagram.com/mydbpodcastOR BE A REAL GEM + TUNE IN ON PATREON: www.patreon.com/MYDBpodcastOR WATCH ON YOUTUBE: www.youtube.com/juliemerica The opinions expressed by Julie Merica and Make Your Damn Bed Podcast are intended for entertainment purposes only. 1386 || on cooperation
ECooperation is good for the goose and good for the gander, but it's built on trust. 1385 || tit for tat (the winning strategy)
EIn multi-cycle versions of the prisoner's dilemma, the most successful winning strategy was tit for tat (and later, tit for two tats) because it was: Nice, (didn't defect first)Retaliatory, (so they didn't get exploited for being too nice)Forgiving, (they retaliate, and then return to cooperation. Not petty or vengeful.) E"We want the world to be better—kinder, more just, more merciful. We still yearn toward noblebright, toward an honest and desperate belief that love conquers all. Except, when the other guy has more guns and fewer moral objections than we do, it doesn’t.We forget, sometimes, that we have knives too in this empire. That we can unsheathe them, that we can turn our blades to the defense of an atom of justice and a molecule of mercy that might not even exist—except . . . except for where we make them exist, in the hands we hold out to each other, and in the shelter we offer even when we ourselves are exhausted, footsore, and filthy, with the wolves at our doors.There are no heroes and no villains. There are just people. That’s hopepunk: Whether the glass is half full or half empty, what matters is that there’s water in that glass. ESometimes, the most powerful form of protest isn’t about what you do, it's about what you don't do. The simplest way to fight back against a system that thrives on your consumption is to simply... opt out of it as much as humanly possible. It’s going to be super inconvenient at first, but once you get the hang of it you’ll realize the perks: it’s better for the environment, better for your wallet, and a surprisingly powerful tool to weaponize in a capitalist society.And the best part? You don’t have to do anything. In fact, the less you do, the better.Donate to Palestinian Children’s Relief Fund::www.pcrf.netDonate to Mutual Aid Funds: https://www.folxhealth.com/library/mutual-aid-fundsGET AN OCCASIONAL PERSONAL EMAIL FROM ME: www.makeyourdamnbedpodcast.comTUNE IN ON INSTAGRAM FOR COOL CONTENT: www.instagram.com/mydbpodcastOR BE A REAL GEM + TUNE IN ON PATREON: www.patreon.com/MYDBpodcastOR WATCH ON YOUTUBE: www.youtube.com/juliemerica The opinions expressed by Julie Merica and Make Your Damn Bed Podcast are intended for entertainment purposes only. 1366 || dysregulation as resistance
E@pat.radical.therapist asks: "What if dysregulation is a form of resistance?" and "What if liberation isn't in the perfect regulation of our nervous systems but in the deep, embodied permission to exist as we are - in movement, in mess, in rage, in laughter, in all the things that were never meant to be tamed?" - PatriciaTrying to regulate our dysregulation the time, instead of really listening to it, can be counterintuitive.Maybe it's time we stop trying to ground ourselves in unstable soil. Maybe it's time we listened to what our nervous system is saying instead of trying to battle it into submission. "Our healing is not about being soothed into submission. It is about remembering that we are meant to feel, meant to move, meant to be alive in our fullest range." - Prentis Hemphill @Pat.Radical.Therapist IG post: https://www.instagram.com/p/DFdJtaYOIfw/?img_index=6&igsh=NmJoZmY2N3IwY2dj3 stages of trauma recovery: https://healingfromcomplexptsd.com/stages-trauma-recovery/@sia_ontheotherside IG post: https://www.instagram.com/reel/DCT_cwfOoeE/?igsh=MnVtNHczc3IxaWFwPsychotherapist Pete Walker: https://pete-walker.com/Donate to Palestinian Children’s Relief Fund::www.pcrf.netDonate to Mutual Aid Funds: https://www.folxhealth.com/library/mutual-aid-fundsGET AN OCCASIONAL PERSONAL EMAIL FROM ME: www.makeyourdamnbedpodcast.comTUNE IN ON INSTAGRAM FOR COOL CONTENT: www.instagram.com/mydbpodcastOR BE A REAL GEM + TUNE IN ON PATREON: www.patreon.com/MYDBpodcastOR WATCH ON YOUTUBE: www.youtube.com/juliemerica The opinions expressed by Julie Merica and Make Your Damn Bed Podcast are intended for entertainment purposes only. 1365 || resistance motivation
EYou haven't heard about any major acts of resistance because they don't want you to think it's happening, but just because you can't see the helpers, doesn't meant they're not there. 1364 || CIA guide to simple sabotage
E“Insist on doing everything through ‘channels.’ Never permit short-cuts to be taken in order to expedite decisions.”“Make ‘speeches.’ Talk as frequently as possible and at great length. Illustrate your ‘points’ by long anecdotes and accounts of personal experiences. Never hesitate to make a few appropriate ‘patriotic’ comments.”“Bring up irrelevant issues as frequently as possible.”“Haggle over precise wordings of communications, minutes, resolutions.”“‘Misunderstand’ orders. Ask endless questions or engage in long correspondence about such orders. Quibble over them when you can.”“In making work assignments, always sign out the unimportant jobs first. See that the important jobs are assigned to inefficient workers of poor machines.”“To lower morale and with it, production, be pleasant to inefficient workers; give them undeserved promotions. Discriminate against efficient workers; complain unjustly about their work.”“Hold conferences when there is more critical work to be done.”“Multiply paperwork in plausible ways.” “Make mistakes in quantities of material when you are copying orders. Confuse similar names. Use wrong addresses.”“Work slowly. Think out ways to increase the number of movements necessary on your job”“Pretend that instructions are hard to understand, and ask to have them repeated more than once. Or pretend that you are particularly anxious to do your work, and pester the foreman with unnecessary questions.”“Snarl up administration in every possible way. Fill out forms illegibly so that they will have to be done over; make mistakes or omit requested information in forms.” “Report imaginary spies or danger to the Gestapo or police,” “Act stupid.” “Be as irritable and quarrelsome as possible without getting yourself into trouble,” “Cry and sob hysterically at every occasion, especially when confronted by government clerks.”The article I read: https://www.404media.co/declassified-cia-guide-to-sabotaging-fascism-is-suddenly-viral/The Field Guide: https://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/26184?Donate to Palestinian Children’s Relief Fund::www.pcrf.netDonate to Mutual Aid Funds: https://www.folxhealth.com/library/mutual-aid-fundsGET AN OCCASIONAL PERSONAL EMAIL FROM ME: www.makeyourdamnbedpodcast.comTUNE IN ON INSTAGRAM FOR COOL CONTENT: www.instagram.com/mydbpodcastOR BE A REAL GEM + TUNE IN ON PATREON: www.patreon.com/MYDBpodcastOR WATCH ON YOUTUBE: www.youtube.com/juliemerica The opinions expressed by Julie Merica and Make Your Damn Bed Podcast are intended for entertainment purposes only. 1360 || we are stronger than we think
E"There will be more acts of repression, cruelty and abuses of power coming from federal, state and local officials in the weeks and months ahead. There is no formula for deciding how to respond to authoritarian attacks, and being constantly on the defensive is exhausting and demoralizing. Reclaiming agency in defining the terrain of struggle away from repressive control and towards individual and community empowerment is key to building and maintaining momentum, as well as hope." - Maria J Stephan Maria J Stephan's Article: https://wagingnonviolence.org/2025/02/we-are-stronger-than-we-think/Donate to Palestinian Children’s Relief Fund::www.pcrf.netDonate to Mutual Aid Funds: https://www.folxhealth.com/library/mutual-aid-fundsGET AN OCCASIONAL PERSONAL EMAIL FROM ME: www.makeyourdamnbedpodcast.comTUNE IN ON INSTAGRAM FOR COOL CONTENT: www.instagram.com/mydbpodcastOR BE A REAL GEM + TUNE IN ON PATREON: www.patreon.com/MYDBpodcastOR WATCH ON YOUTUBE: www.youtube.com/juliemerica The opinions expressed by Julie Merica and Make Your Damn Bed Podcast are intended for entertainment purposes only.
