1424 || "christian" grifters

E

There's been an uptick in far-right/christo-fascist content on almost all of my various feeds lately. I've personally got a VERY niche "far left"/"abolitionist" social media feed, but recently this wildly problematic propaganda has been sneaking into every corner. But it's not just me. Trump appointed a grifter to sell "prayer" that would heal your illnesses and give you wealth for the ridiculously egregious cost of $1000. This person is an official white house representative being paid very well by our hard earned tax dollars. Mark Wahlberg and Gwen Stefani are selling a subscription based prayer app. A pastor sold "God Coin" crypto scheme and rug pulled his supporters. Spoiler alert: God's grace isn't hidden behind a paywall. 1422 || strategies for breaking up with your phone

E

Today I'm sharing a few techniques that can help to build a healthier relationship with me and my screens. Putting a rubber band or hair tie around your phone is a cheap and super effective way to increase your mindfulness of your usage.20-20-20 rule. Every 20 minutes, take a 20 second break looking at something 20 feet away. Having an alternative available builds the muscle of doing other activities rather than scrolling every single time our hands are idle. Turn off notifications. Delete apps you don't want to spend so much time on. Set screentime limits. Use an app to gamify your habits. Don't use your phone as an alarm clock. Put your phone on grayscale. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Mindfulness strategies, and somatic therapy may help in certain circumstances, as well. 1419 || time poverty

E

Instead of worrying about flawlessly juggling all the balls in your life, try to figure out if any of the glass balls are replaceable, or if you have any backup to help you balance or tidy or judge which balls need to be gently set down for a while. And if you step on some glass and feel some pain -You feeling pain isn’t a signal of failure but a reminder you’re human.  Is it possible to lower the stakes? Can you downgrade a glass ball from needing perfection to just needing completion? Can you put on a pair of shoes to protect yourself from these inevitable drops? Through boundary setting, therapists, community aid, etc. You feeling overwhelmed is a sign you’re paying attention, which is more than most people can say. Society has a way of telling us we’re doing a bad job no matter how well we’re doing, so let’s do better at reclaiming our agency over that feeling. Arbitrary timelines aside, what really matters? Socially mandated achievements aside, what do you really want?Donate to the Palestinian Children's Relief Fund: www.pcrf.netGET AN OCCASIONAL PERSONAL EMAIL FROM ME: www.makeyourdamnbedpodcast.comTUNE IN ON INSTAGRAM FOR COOL CONTENT: www.instagram.com/mydbpodcastOR BE A REAL GEM + TUNE IN ON PATREON: www.patreon.com/MYDBpodcastOR WATCH ON YOUTUBE: www.youtube.com/juliemerica The opinions expressed by Julie Merica and Make Your Damn Bed Podcast are intended for entertainment purposes only. 1418 || hurry sickness

E

I’m the type of person who always feels like I’m running late despite the fact that I very rarely am. I’ve been trying a new type of thought exercise where I take a moment to visit with a more senior or elderly me. Sometimes it’s my 81st birthday. I sit as her, with the underlying understanding that everything did eventually work itself out, and I had a great, full, and beautiful life despite all of its challenges. As I sit in my 80 ish year old body, I take a moment to reflect on the good parts I can recall and then I bring her back to my 37 year old body. With the back that creaks so much less often and feet that ache so much less intensely. I bring my senior self back into the apartment she hasn’t seen for decades in the town she sometimes misses. She looks at her partner with adoring eyes as they haven’t wrinkled and spotted in the sun just yet. She puts sunscreen on us both and digs out the old hobbies she regrets not taking more seriously. She takes her time to cook a nourishing meal with hands that don’t shake and arms strong enough to lift the dutch oven. She eats slowly because there is no rush, and she has learned that in her many years of rushing on this planet. She feels excited to be in a body she used to not appreciate. She wants to wander and explore with these eyes that seem to see more clearly and bones that don’t tire so quickly. She’s not afraid about missing a boat because she realized there is no single boat. So I try not to be afraid of missing the boat. She reminds me that we can build our own boats, or chill on the beach - it doesn’t really matter as long as we remember it doesn't matter. As long as the truly objectively important shit gets done, we need to stop pretending like it’s possible to get everything else done too. One way to remember that is to allow your future self to lend you some peace and wisdom once in a while. So she lends me her peace and she lends me her wisdom and with it she returns to me more energized, and grateful to be alive and able to experience this time again. For the first time in years she is awakened to the miraculous nature of this current life. She is happy to be here, and she is me.  The source: https://psychcentral.com/anxiety/always-in-a-rush-maybe-its-time-urgencyDonate to the Palestinian Children's Relief Fund: www.pcrf.netGET AN OCCASIONAL PERSONAL EMAIL FROM ME: www.makeyourdamnbedpodcast.comTUNE IN ON INSTAGRAM FOR COOL CONTENT: www.instagram.com/mydbpodcastOR BE A REAL GEM + TUNE IN ON PATREON: www.patreon.com/MYDBpodcastOR WATCH ON YOUTUBE: www.youtube.com/juliemerica The opinions expressed by Julie Merica and Make Your Damn Bed Podcast are intended for entertainment purposes only. 1414 || learning when to disengage

E

As someone who gets flustered and frustrated during confrontations, I tend to use humor as my first line of defense, which can be a powerful tool to disarm without escalating. But when people double down, I get flustered, especially when dealing with bad-faith arguments or deeply entrenched beliefs. I am focused on learning when to escalate, confront, engage, or disengage, and it has completely changed my perspective on what makes a "successful conflict". Not every battle needs fighting. Ask: Is this person open to dialogue, or just looking to provoke? Will bystanders benefit from your response, even if the bigot won’t? Is your energy better spent elsewhere? If they’re just trolling, sometimes the best response is disengagement. Read the room and react accordingly. 1411 || laziness does not exist

E

"If a person can’t get out of bed, something is making them exhausted. If a student isn’t writing papers, there’s some aspect of the assignment that they can’t do without help. If an employee misses deadlines constantly, something is making organization and deadline-meeting difficult. Even if a person is actively choosing to self-sabotage, there’s a reason for it — some fear they’re working through, some need not being met, a lack of self-esteem being expressed.People do not choose to fail or disappoint. No one wants to feel incapable, apathetic, or ineffective. If you look at a person’s action (or inaction) and see only laziness, you are missing key details. There is always an explanation. There are always barriers. Just because you can’t see them, or don’t view them as legitimate, doesn’t mean they’re not there. Look harder." - Devon Price Devon Price's Blog Post: https://humanparts.medium.com/laziness-does-not-exist-3af27e312d01Buy the book: https://www.simonandschuster.com/books/Laziness-Does-Not-Exist/Devon-Price/9781797120591Donate to the Palestinian Children's Relief Fund: www.pcrf.netGET AN OCCASIONAL PERSONAL EMAIL FROM ME: www.makeyourdamnbedpodcast.comTUNE IN ON INSTAGRAM FOR COOL CONTENT: www.instagram.com/mydbpodcastOR BE A REAL GEM + TUNE IN ON PATREON: www.patreon.com/MYDBpodcastOR WATCH ON YOUTUBE: www.youtube.com/juliemerica The opinions expressed by Julie Merica and Make Your Damn Bed Podcast are intended for entertainment purposes only. 1409 || protest alternatives

E

There are thousands of alternatives and accommodations for those of us who can't physically attend a protest or rally. Some are less glamorous than others, but some will feel like the right fit. It's a long haul. Don't give up on the fight, just keep moving forward. Add a little good where you can and reduce a little bad where you can, but don't be too critical on yourself (or your community) if you're unable to do it all at once, or you need to take breaks. We will need breaks. We will need self-care. We will need community care. We will need to be patient and kind to ourselves in the process. \Ways to Protest from Home by Chico Democracy: https://chicodemocracy.weebly.com/protest-from-home.html@mochaeinstein27 thoughts on the Bake Sale: https://www.instagram.com/p/DF_TKjPP0NH/?locale=es_ES%2FReddit for filing a complaint with the Attorney General: https://www.reddit.com/r/50501/comments/1j5i2ag/we_the_people/More Ethical Investing: https://www.ethic.com/DONATE:www.pcrf.netGET AN OCCASIONAL PERSONAL EMAIL FROM ME: www.makeyourdamnbedpodcast.comTUNE IN ON INSTAGRAM FOR COOL CONTENT: www.instagram.com/mydbpodcastOR BE A REAL GEM + TUNE IN ON PATREON: www.patreon.com/MYDBpodcastOR WATCH ON YOUTUBE: www.youtube.com/juliemerica The opinions expressed by Julie Merica and Make Your Damn Bed Podcast are intended for entertainment purposes only. 1408 || tear gas protocol

E

Remember, if you stay prepared, you don't have to get prepared. If you're tear gassed: Get out of the cloud of tear gas and away from the general area as soon as you can. Seek high ground. Walk, don’t run. Running may cause you to breath more heavily, filling your lungs with more tear gas. Try to keep breathing even.If your eyes have been exposed and are burning or blurry, flush them with water immediately. Try not to touch your eyes, nose, or mouth. Use water from your water bottle to flush. If you can find an open drinking fountain or sink in a public restroom, flush your eyes with water for 10 to 15 minutes. There is no evidence that baking soda or milk is better than cool water alone. There is one small randomized controlled trial that found that baby shampoo is no better than water. Using baby wipes or makeup wipes if water is not immediately available may cause increased irritation. If possible, and you are not affected yourself, help others by moving them to a clean and ventilated area.Do not try to remove the tear gas canisters, as doing so may put you at an increased risk for further harm and injury.Protest Preparedness: https://www.hrc.org/resources/tips-for-preparedness-peaceful-protesting-and-safetyKnow Your Rights: https://www.aclu.org/know-your-rights/protesters-rights Digital Security Checkup: https://securityinabox.org/en/Tear Gas Protocol: https://phr.org/our-work/resources/preparing-for-protecting-against-and-treating-tear-gas-and-other-chemical-irritant-exposure-a-protesters-guide/DONATE:www.pcrf.netGET AN OCCASIONAL PERSONAL EMAIL FROM ME: www.makeyourdamnbedpodcast.comTUNE IN ON INSTAGRAM FOR COOL CONTENT: www.instagram.com/mydbpodcastOR BE A REAL GEM + TUNE IN ON PATREON: www.patreon.com/MYDBpodcastOR WATCH ON YOUTUBE: www.youtube.com/juliemerica The opinions expressed by Julie Merica and Make Your Damn Bed Podcast are intended for entertainment purposes only. 1406 || whimsy and humor as resistance

E

"There are no exact guidelines. There are probably no guidelines at all. The only thing I can recommend at this stage is a sense of humor, an ability to see things in their ridiculous and absurd dimensions, to laugh at others and at ourselves, a sense of irony regarding everything that calls out for parody in this world. In other words, I can only recommend perspective and distance. Awareness of all the most dangerous kinds of vanity, both in others and in ourselves. A good mind. A modest certainty about the meaning of things. Gratitude for the gift of life and the courage to take responsibility for it." - Václav Havel “Nothing can burst the balloon of pomposity and dictatorial rhetoric better than comedy. 1405 || manufacturing consent

E

This month's patreon episode is about: Raw milk, Instagram Face, and Manufactured Consent:  The relationship between the rise in homogeny, purity culture, and conservatism; and how we can reclaim our agency. The culture of “anti-cringe”, leads to a fear of standing out, which pushes us towards not just one type of look, but one type of ideology as well. This pipeline, which mass-produces conformity, is exactly what authoritarian systems crave. Purity politics and rising conservatism aren’t just eroding individuality—they’re manufacturing consent for control. When we dress, look, crave, and think the same, we become self-policing agents of the authoritarian state. They don’t need to enforce rules; we do it for them. And when we do the work for them, we become much easier to control. “THE MASS MEDIA SERVE AS A SYSTEM FOR COMMUNICATING messages and symbols to the general populace. It is their function to amuse, entertain, and inform, and to inculcate individuals with the values, beliefs, and codes of behavior that will integrate them into the institutional structures of the larger society. In a world of concentrated wealth and major conflicts of class interest, to fulfil this role requires systematic propaganda.”These 5 filters (ownership, revenue, sourcing, flak, and fear) ensure that the media marginalizes alternative viewpoints and reinforces the status quo and though they were talking about television media, news, advertisements, and movies, much of the same implications can be applied to the media we consume on the internet. In a lot of ways, the internet didn’t just continue the propaganda model—it optimized it.Edward S. Empathy involves listening to and validating other people's experiences, even when they challenge our own beliefs. Can empathy be learned, or is it an innate quality? By acting now: through policy reform, grassroots organizing, environmental justice, and technological innovation, we can work to prevent the worst impacts of the climate crisis and build a more just and sustainable future. The power to shape our future is in our hands. Everything will depend on it. You have to be ready. How are you going to prepare for that day when it really matters? You have to stay ‘in shape’ so that when the big day comes you will be ready. What you need is ‘anarchist calisthenics.’ Every day or so break some trivial law that makes no sense, even if it’s only jaywalking. Use your own head to judge whether a law is just or reasonable. 1388 || keeping the faith in humanity

E

There are no perfect revolutionaries, and Gandhi is no exception, but that doesn't mean we can't learn from their work. So, as Gandhi reminds us, "We must never lose our faith in humanity.”And he's right. We are all connected, we are all in this together, and cooperation is the best bet for winning this thing - for us, our allies, and unfortunately our enemies, too. "... we shall not flag or fail. We shall go on to the end. We shall fight in the Bronx and along the border, we shall fight in the national parks and forests, we shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength in the streets, we shall defend our nation, whatever the cost may be. We shall fight on the public beaches, we shall fight to protect the public lands, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills; we shall never surrender. And even if, which I do not for a moment believe, this nation or a large part of it were subjugated and starving, then our teenagers and youth would carry on the struggle, until, in God's good time, the New World that is our beautiful multicultural future, with all its renewable power and grassroots might, steps forth to the rescue and the liberation of the Old." - Winston Churchill "I don't know when this regime will end or how, but I know that it will, and that we have a role to play in that and whatever comes after." - Rebecca SolnitThe source: https://www.meditationsinanemergency.com/people-get-ready/Choose Democracy's mailing list: Choose DemocracyHandbook for nonviolent resistance campaigns: https://www.nonviolent-conflict.org/resource/handbook-for-nonviolent-campaigns/Join an affinity Group:Resistance Rangers https://indivisible.org/groups Third ActTesla TakedownDONATE:www.pcrf.netGet Involved:Operation Olive Branch: Spreadsheets + LinksGET AN OCCASIONAL PERSONAL EMAIL FROM ME: www.makeyourdamnbedpodcast.comTUNE IN ON INSTAGRAM FOR COOL CONTENT: www.instagram.com/mydbpodcastOR BE A REAL GEM + TUNE IN ON PATREON: www.patreon.com/MYDBpodcastOR WATCH ON YOUTUBE: www.youtube.com/juliemerica The opinions expressed by Julie Merica and Make Your Damn Bed Podcast are intended for entertainment purposes only. Cooperation is good for the goose and good for the gander, but it's built on trust. Our current society does a lot of work to convince us that we can't trust each other - and that is to our detriment. 1385 || tit for tat (the winning strategy)

E

In multi-cycle versions of the prisoner's dilemma, the most successful winning strategy was tit for tat (and later, tit for two tats) because it was: Nice, (didn't defect first)Retaliatory, (so they didn't get exploited for being too nice)Forgiving, (they retaliate, and then return to cooperation. Not petty or vengeful.) Non-envious (they didn't strive to get more than their opponent.)I think this can teach us a lot about cooperation and mutual-beneficiaries, even in relationships where we have to work with people we don't like or trust. Cooperation is still a better strategy than constant fighting, and that is exciting to me. "...the most important move a frozen person can make is whatever breaks the cycle. When so many people are isolated, community-affirming events are vital. When everything feels like it is simultaneously too much, and not enough, we must recognize the importance of beginning.
