ERULES FOR RADICALS: "Power is not only what you have but what the enemy thinks you have.""Never go outside the experience of your people.""Whenever possible go outside of the experience of the enemy.""Make the enemy live up to its own book of rules.""Ridicule is man's most potent weapon. There is no defense. It is almost impossible to counterattack ridicule. Also it infuriates the opposition, who then react to your advantage.""A good tactic is one your people enjoy.""A tactic that drags on too long becomes a drag.""Keep the pressure on.""The threat is usually more terrifying than the thing itself.""The major premise for tactics is the development of operations that will maintain a constant pressure upon the opposition.""If you push a negative hard and deep enough it will break through into its counterside; this is based on the principle that every positive has its negative.""The price of a successful attack is a constructive alternative.""Pick the target, freeze it, personalize it, and polarize it."RESOURCES: https://commonslibrary.org/rules-for-radicals-by-saul-alinsky/ACCESS THE BOOK: https://archive.org/details/RulesForRadicalsSaulAlinskyOCR/mode/2upDONATE:www.pcrf.netGet Involved:Operation Olive Branch: Spreadsheets + LinksGET AN OCCASIONAL PERSONAL EMAIL FROM ME: www.makeyourdamnbedpodcast.comTUNE IN ON INSTAGRAM FOR COOL CONTENT: www.instagram.com/mydbpodcastOR BE A REAL GEM + TUNE IN ON PATREON: www.patreon.com/MYDBpodcastOR WATCH ON YOUTUBE: www.youtube.com/juliemerica The opinions expressed by Julie Merica and Make Your Damn Bed Podcast are intended for entertainment purposes only. 1306 || buying a lifestyle
EIn today’s world, we're sold far more than just products. We're sold lifestyles/belief systems that tell us who we should be, how we should act, and what will make us 'successful.' Brands like Apple, Nike, Lululemon, etc. have moved beyond selling shoes or tech gadgets—they sell you the idea that buying their product makes you part of something bigger. It makes you 'better.' But here’s the catch: these beliefs don’t liberate us. They bind us. It’s a trick. A trick to make you think that changing who you are on the outside—buying a new product, following the latest trend—will change the world. It won’t. It will just keep the cycle going.THE ARTICLE: https://subpixel.space/entries/life-after-lifestyle/THE SPEECH: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iK3oK50AFlgTHE AUTHOR: https://tobyshorin.com/DONATE:www.pcrf.netGet Involved:Operation Olive Branch: Spreadsheets + LinksGET AN OCCASIONAL PERSONAL EMAIL FROM ME: www.makeyourdamnbedpodcast.comTUNE IN ON INSTAGRAM FOR COOL CONTENT: www.instagram.com/mydbpodcastOR BE A REAL GEM + TUNE IN ON PATREON: www.patreon.com/MYDBpodcastOR WATCH ON YOUTUBE: www.youtube.com/juliemerica The opinions expressed by Julie Merica and Make Your Damn Bed Podcast are intended for entertainment purposes only. EHow do we make ethical decisions? Are there "universal moral truths"? What can we do if a situation is not morally "black and white"?There are countless factors that apply to every ethical question. Context is crucial.I think, in general, we're all bound to be a little wrong and a little right - and understanding all of the factors that go into that is the clearest way to ensure we're not overwhelmed with that responsibility.Ethics 101: https://www.bbc.co.uk/ethics/introduction/intro_1.shtmlAnother Intro to Ethics: https://en.wikiversity.org/wiki/Historical_Introduction_to_Philosophy/EthicsAnd another: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nicomachean_EthicsDONATE:www.pcrf.netGet Involved:Operation Olive Branch: Spreadsheets + LinksGET AN OCCASIONAL PERSONAL EMAIL FROM ME: www.makeyourdamnbedpodcast.comTUNE IN ON INSTAGRAM FOR COOL CONTENT: www.instagram.com/mydbpodcastOR BE A REAL GEM + TUNE IN ON PATREON: www.patreon.com/MYDBpodcastOR WATCH ON YOUTUBE: www.youtube.com/juliemerica The opinions expressed by Julie Merica and Make Your Damn Bed Podcast are intended for entertainment purposes only. 1296 || what's really getting me through it
EHere are some things that helped me survive lately: Thinking of rest and joy as resistance. Intentional rest and joy are essential to the whole thing. When I start to have a little shame spiral about feeling a little bit of joy or hope or when I start to feel guilty about needing a break or rest — I remind myself that some weirdo want’s me to feel that way so that I get tired and give up — and I try to let myself move (or not move) with a little more grace. Reminding myself to slow down.I have never not been in a rush. I sometimes notice I’m rushing for nothing only to realize my heart is racing and I’m breathing like I ran a marathon. Plus, lately I’ve been cooking and baking more and that shit is dangerous (and devastating) if you mess up. So, slowing down is a good idea in general. I’ve been doing a lot more “music + ambience” on youtube, and it’s been a game changer for my focus while working, writing, or cooking. Allowing myself to feel shit as it comes up.Basically, I’ve been crying a lot, panicking sometimes, and then fully ready to stress clean or stress cook or stress bake until I can muster up the energy to face life again — and instead of shaming myself about it and feeling worse, I’ve been trying to respond with patience and compassion instead. And who would’ve thought? It helps.Taking action + reclaiming a sense of control. So when I’m feeling like I’m overwhelmed with the world or angry with the world, I remember that I’m not alone in that anger and the best place to put it is to use. There are people already creating the future that we want. There are people who want the same things I do from humanity and they are all around me, all the time but I can’t see them because they’re busy doing shit to make it happen. The sooner I seek out the people already involved in the work, the sooner I can put a hand or two in it, as well. And sure, I can’t do everything, but that sure as shit doesn’t mean I shouldn’t do anything. And doing anything, starts with something. 1295 || coping tools vs. weapons
EIf we look at our coping mechanisms at face value, it can add to the stress that we’re attempting to take away. It can feel like a bandaid for a symptom rather than a direct address to the roots of the problem. But not everything can be a full uprooting of systemic damages. Sometimes, effective coping is about surviving the moment. So let’s lump all of the coping strategies I listed (and any others you can think of), and see them for what they really are: survival tools. They are tools to help us survive. They are strategies to protect our health internal and external in literally any way that our brain possibly can. So they are morally neutral. Not bad, not good. A hammer can be a valuable tool or a dangerous weapon, depending on how it’s yielded. So check your tools, sure, but also don’t be afraid to check in with your wielding strategies, too. 1294 || a break from politics
EListen, we’ve gotten pretty political over the past month, and I wanted to defend my reasoning for the seasoning before I talk about why I wanna switch it up a bit. Unfortunately life is political. Not addressing the elephant in the room doesn't remove the elephant from the room. And I wish more than anything we lived in a society where we didn’t have to talk about the ways the systems impact us and everything around us. That said, I never want to push anyone away from radical solidarity and community action. So, we're mixing it up over the next season of the podcast and we're gonna start infusing some neuroscience, psychology, art, friendship, and community themes back into the regular rotation so we can keep our momentum sustainably! Often these methods are effective at preventing or reducing backre. However, sometimes the perpetrators’ tactics fail, and backre occurs. When it does, it is often because people relied on ve principles (which can be remembered as the “5 Rs” below) to heighten outrage and increase mobilization against injustice. These principles are:1. Reveal – Expose the injustice.2. Redeem – Validate the target.3. Reframe – Interpret the event as an injustice.4. Redirect – Mobilize support and avoid official channels.5. Resist – Resist intimidation and bribes.2RESOURCE: https://static1.squarespace.com/static/666b71d25d155b3509763e61/t/6696c79b4483c7565da3e43c/1721157535696/HOPE+PV+End+Political+Violence+Guide+07-16-24+version.pdfDONATE:www.pcrf.netGet Involved:Operation Olive Branch: Spreadsheets + LinksGET AN OCCASIONAL PERSONAL EMAIL FROM ME: www.makeyourdamnbedpodcast.comTUNE IN ON INSTAGRAM FOR COOL CONTENT: www.instagram.com/mydbpodcastOR BE A REAL GEM + TUNE IN ON PATREON: www.patreon.com/MYDBpodcastOR WATCH ON YOUTUBE: www.youtube.com/juliemerica The opinions expressed by Julie Merica and Make Your Damn Bed Podcast are intended for entertainment purposes only. E"When threats achieve their intended results, they embolden those who use them. It’s clear that inciting PV has become politically or economically profitable for certain individuals and groups. Some perpetrators also find threat-making to be psychologically gratifying. For these reasons, the very small minority in the US who incite, threaten, and enact PV won’t stop on their own. I often want to reach for things that further disconnect me, when in reality, the way out is through connecting more intentionally and deliberately with my current self in what is affecting me, how it's affecting me, and what I NEED, instead of want.If you're in survival mode currently. I am with you. We will get out of it, in due time. This filter dictates the stories we tell ourselves about ourselves, about other people, and the world around us, but because we’ve carried this narrator with us our entire lives, it can be hard to tell which stories are actually fiction, and it can be even more difficult to remember that we can sometimes rewrite happier through line, for certain stories that aren’t as helpful anymore. 1272 || negative thought spirals
EToday we're talking about some common cognitive distortions. Not to brag or anything, but I’m kind of a professional spiraler. I have done it so well for so long that my internal anxious voice has taken me full circle and essentially become background noise. So while I have a million personal stories about me catastrophizing or spinning out about the future, I realize I don’t really have a ton of actionable solutions. So, I did what I do when I have an idea for the podcast and I spiraled into a resource hole so I could find any of the relevant neuroscience and therapeutic remedies so that we could practice getting ourselves out of the grip of the spiral once and for all. E"Cynicism is a tool of the status quo." - Jamil Zaki "Billions of us are taught that life is a battle where winners take all and losers are everywhere. Our trust and hope are mocked as naive. By now,you know better. You can stay skeptical and avoid knee-jerk assumptions about people. You can remember that the media warps our view of one another and look for better data. Most of all, you can realize that hope is not a weakness, but a path to being less wrong and more effective. We can use that hope, like a divining rod, to locate others who want thesame things we do, building solidarity and common cause." - Jamil ZakiRESOURCES: https://greatergood.berkeley.edu/article/item/how_to_find_hope_when_youre_feeling_cynicalhttps://www.theguardian.com/books/article/2024/aug/23/hope-for-cynics-by-jamil-zaki-review-beating-the-trust-recessionhttps://www.pbs.org/newshour/show/in-hope-for-cynics-researcher-explores-how-seeing-the-good-in-others-is-good-for-youTHE BOOK: https://www.jamil-zaki.com/hope-for-cynicsDONATE:www.pcrf.netGet Involved:Operation Olive Branch: Spreadsheets + LinksGET AN OCCASIONAL PERSONAL EMAIL FROM ME: www.makeyourdamnbedpodcast.comTUNE IN ON INSTAGRAM FOR COOL CONTENT: www.instagram.com/mydbpodcastOR BE A REAL GEM + TUNE IN ON PATREON: www.patreon.com/MYDBpodcastOR WATCH ON YOUTUBE: www.youtube.com/juliemerica The opinions expressed by Julie Merica and Make Your Damn Bed Podcast are intended for entertainment purposes only. I truly believe there is room for both. “The challenge for us... is not to grieve over social change, but to guide it.” - Robert PutnamRESOURCES: https://greatergood.berkeley.edu/article/item/how_to_find_hope_when_youre_feeling_cynicalhttps://www.theguardian.com/books/article/2024/aug/23/hope-for-cynics-by-jamil-zaki-review-beating-the-trust-recessionhttps://www.pbs.org/newshour/show/in-hope-for-cynics-researcher-explores-how-seeing-the-good-in-others-is-good-for-youTHE BOOK: https://www.jamil-zaki.com/hope-for-cynicsDONATE:www.pcrf.netGet Involved:Operation Olive Branch: Spreadsheets + LinksGET AN OCCASIONAL PERSONAL EMAIL FROM ME: www.makeyourdamnbedpodcast.comTUNE IN ON INSTAGRAM FOR COOL CONTENT: www.instagram.com/mydbpodcastOR BE A REAL GEM + TUNE IN ON PATREON: www.patreon.com/MYDBpodcastOR WATCH ON YOUTUBE: www.youtube.com/juliemerica The opinions expressed by Julie Merica and Make Your Damn Bed Podcast are intended for entertainment purposes only. 1268 || disagree better || hope for cynics || 7
E"Studies reveal a recipe for disagreeing better:Good disagreers ask questions instead of making statements. They work to get underneath people’s opinions to their stories. When they spot common ground, good disagreers name it.When they are unsure about something, they say so rather than pretending to be confident. These ingredients each decrease the chance that dissent will devolve into toxic conflict. But good disagreement is more than nice; it’s powerful. In experiments, people given the recipe you see here listened more intently and asked better questions. But the people they talked with also became more open-minded, even though they received no training. Outrage is contagious, but so are curiosity and humility.” - Jamil ZakiRESOURCES: https://greatergood.berkeley.edu/article/item/how_to_find_hope_when_youre_feeling_cynicalhttps://www.theguardian.com/books/article/2024/aug/23/hope-for-cynics-by-jamil-zaki-review-beating-the-trust-recessionhttps://www.pbs.org/newshour/show/in-hope-for-cynics-researcher-explores-how-seeing-the-good-in-others-is-good-for-youTHE BOOK: https://www.jamil-zaki.com/hope-for-cynicsDONATE:www.pcrf.netGet Involved:Operation Olive Branch: Spreadsheets + LinksGET AN OCCASIONAL PERSONAL EMAIL FROM ME: www.makeyourdamnbedpodcast.comTUNE IN ON INSTAGRAM FOR COOL CONTENT: www.instagram.com/mydbpodcastOR BE A REAL GEM + TUNE IN ON PATREON: www.patreon.com/MYDBpodcastOR WATCH ON YOUTUBE: www.youtube.com/juliemerica The opinions expressed by Julie Merica and Make Your Damn Bed Podcast are intended for entertainment purposes only. 1267 || trust is created, not earned || hope for cynics || day 7
E"Ernest Hemingway once said, "The best way to find out if you can trust somebody is to trust them." He was half right. Trust doesn't just teach us about people; it changes them. It's a gift they repay. A reciprocity mindset means understanding this. Leaps of faith are actions inspired by that knowledge: deliberate bets on other people.” - Jamil ZakiRESOURCES: https://greatergood.berkeley.edu/article/item/how_to_find_hope_when_youre_feeling_cynicalhttps://www.theguardian.com/books/article/2024/aug/23/hope-for-cynics-by-jamil-zaki-review-beating-the-trust-recessionhttps://www.pbs.org/newshour/show/in-hope-for-cynics-researcher-explores-how-seeing-the-good-in-others-is-good-for-youTHE BOOK: https://www.jamil-zaki.com/hope-for-cynicsDONATE:www.pcrf.netGet Involved:Operation Olive Branch: Spreadsheets + LinksGET AN OCCASIONAL PERSONAL EMAIL FROM ME: www.makeyourdamnbedpodcast.comTUNE IN ON INSTAGRAM FOR COOL CONTENT: www.instagram.com/mydbpodcastOR BE A REAL GEM + TUNE IN ON PATREON: www.patreon.com/MYDBpodcastOR WATCH ON YOUTUBE: www.youtube.com/juliemerica The opinions expressed by Julie Merica and Make Your Damn Bed Podcast are intended for entertainment purposes only. E"Any of us can seek out more accurate, less cynical news. But don't forget that the stories you tell influence others, too. Gossip is our ancient media, and someone is probably tuned in to yours. Try to balance negative conversation with celebration of the kindness and honesty that you've witnessed. Be someone else's nourishing media.” - Jamil ZakiRESOURCES: https://greatergood.berkeley.edu/article/item/how_to_find_hope_when_youre_feeling_cynicalhttps://www.theguardian.com/books/article/2024/aug/23/hope-for-cynics-by-jamil-zaki-review-beating-the-trust-recessionhttps://www.pbs.org/newshour/show/in-hope-for-cynics-researcher-explores-how-seeing-the-good-in-others-is-good-for-youTHE BOOK: https://www.jamil-zaki.com/hope-for-cynicsDONATE:www.pcrf.netGet Involved:Operation Olive Branch: Spreadsheets + LinksGET AN OCCASIONAL PERSONAL EMAIL FROM ME: www.makeyourdamnbedpodcast.comTUNE IN ON INSTAGRAM FOR COOL CONTENT: www.instagram.com/mydbpodcastOR BE A REAL GEM + TUNE IN ON PATREON: www.patreon.com/MYDBpodcastOR WATCH ON YOUTUBE: www.youtube.com/juliemerica The opinions expressed by Julie Merica and Make Your Damn Bed Podcast are intended for entertainment purposes only. 1265 || hope for cynics (day 4)
EResearchers find that people regularly fail to realize how charitable, trustworthy, and compassionate others are. Helpers are all around; we just don’t see them. Some of these mistakes reflect how our minds are tuned. Negativity bias means people pay more attention to bad things than good. Again, thismakes evolutionary sense: It’s safe to ignore a sunset, but not a tsunami. As psychologist Fred Bryant says, “Troubles kick our door in and come and find us… whereas the pleasures and the joys, they don’t hunt us down and force us to enjoy them. They wait and they sometimes hide.” - Jamil ZakiRESOURCES: https://greatergood.berkeley.edu/article/item/how_to_find_hope_when_youre_feeling_cynicalhttps://www.theguardian.com/books/article/2024/aug/23/hope-for-cynics-by-jamil-zaki-review-beating-the-trust-recessionhttps://www.pbs.org/newshour/show/in-hope-for-cynics-researcher-explores-how-seeing-the-good-in-others-is-good-for-youTHE BOOK: https://www.jamil-zaki.com/hope-for-cynicsDONATE:www.pcrf.netGet Involved:Operation Olive Branch: Spreadsheets + LinksGET AN OCCASIONAL PERSONAL EMAIL FROM ME: www.makeyourdamnbedpodcast.comTUNE IN ON INSTAGRAM FOR COOL CONTENT: www.instagram.com/mydbpodcastOR BE A REAL GEM + TUNE IN ON PATREON: www.patreon.com/MYDBpodcastOR WATCH ON YOUTUBE: www.youtube.com/juliemerica The opinions expressed by Julie Merica and Make Your Damn Bed Podcast are intended for entertainment purposes only. 1264 || hope for cynics (part 3)
E"Cynics often get people wrong, but that doesn’t mean it’s smart to put faith in everyone, all the time. Skeptics update their beliefs based hundreds of children, and then checked in with them a year later. When it came to depression and friendships, cynical children ended up the worst off, but extremely trusting kids did less well than those in the middle. Why? When judging humanity, both cynics and trusters behave like lawyers in humanity’s trial. Trusters represent the defense. They disregard suspicious signs, forget betrayals, and hold on to any evidence of human goodness. Cynics work for the prosecution, explaining away kindness and cataloging every instance of human viciousness. Both attorneys are inclined to ignore half of the evidence, even if they’re opposite halves.Lawyering is a fine way to argue, but a terrible way to learn. A growing science finds that real wisdom arrives when people know what they don’t know. Likewise, social wisdom doesn’t mean believing in everyone or no one. It means believing in evidence—by thinking less like a lawyer and more like a scientist. And despite the different instruments they use, all sorts of scientists share an intellectual tool:skepticism, the questioning of old wisdom and hunger for more information. Skeptics update their beliefs based on new information, allowing them to adjust to a complex world" - Jamil ZakiRESOURCES: https://greatergood.berkeley.edu/article/item/how_to_find_hope_when_youre_feeling_cynicalhttps://www.theguardian.com/books/article/2024/aug/23/hope-for-cynics-by-jamil-zaki-review-beating-the-trust-recessionhttps://www.pbs.org/newshour/show/in-hope-for-cynics-researcher-explores-how-seeing-the-good-in-others-is-good-for-youTHE BOOK: https://www.jamil-zaki.com/hope-for-cynicsDONATE:www.pcrf.netGet Involved:Operation Olive Branch: Spreadsheets + LinksGET AN OCCASIONAL PERSONAL EMAIL FROM ME: www.makeyourdamnbedpodcast.comTUNE IN ON INSTAGRAM FOR COOL CONTENT: www.instagram.com/mydbpodcastOR BE A REAL GEM + TUNE IN ON PATREON: www.patreon.com/MYDBpodcastOR WATCH ON YOUTUBE: www.youtube.com/juliemerica The opinions expressed by Julie Merica and Make Your Damn Bed Podcast are intended for entertainment purposes only. E"Cynicism is the theory that people are selfish, greedy, and dishonest. Like any theory, it changes how we see reality and react to it—in this case, the social world. E"Cynicism is an understandable response to injustice and inequality. But in many cases, it is misplaced. Dozens of studies find that people fail to realize how kind, generous, and open-minded others really are.
