1205 || contradictory feelings of returning home

The act of returning home after spending a decade 1,100 miles away is a daunting one. There are direct contradictions to the way I feel at nearly every turn. 1204 || learning to dance with the chaos

E

There’s something freeing about realizing it’s time to let go. Life’s cycles sometimes match with my own, and things feel serendipitous and “meant to be” but more often than not, life cycles move faster than my own + I’m forced to play catch up on changes and news that I wasn’t just unprepared for, but in denial about. But things do happen. Life surprises you. And no matter how much you resist that reality, it doesn’t change it. I think life is a little bit fate and a little bit chaos. Like an improvised dance. Some steps may surprise you and others may feel like second nature, once you learn to stop resisting the unpredictability of it. Because the steps are not meant to become more predictable to us, we’re just supposed to get better at flowing with it. Of learning as we go. Of learning how to let go when there is a mis-step and to have faith that the dancing will get more fun and beautiful as we continue. But just because we stop cold in the middle of the dance, doesn’t mean the dancing stops. You can take a break, get a water, and become a wallflower if you want, but the real power comes from stepping back into the chaos and embracing the next moves with as much enthusiasm and joy as possible. Because even if you choose to “hate dancing” and “sit this one out” life will eventually sweep you off your feet, and it’ll feel a lot more comfortable and enjoyable if you know how to confidently take a step or two for yourself, once in a while. Learning a new way to dance in a new environment is not just possible, it can actually be enjoyable if I stop worrying about what I look like, or what the song was supposed to sound like, and instead I focus on finding my own rhythm within the flow that’s currently taking place. I think I’ve spent a long time waiting for a more familiar song to play, so I can dance with confidence, but the longer I wait, the more resistant I get. If I can learn to jump in and “figure it out”, then the unfamiliar becomes familiar and the newness I feared is no longer new, and the resistance loses its power. It feels counterintuitive, but sometimes the thing you’re resisting is the resistance itself. Once you stand up and listen to the music that’s playing, you may find yourself actually enjoying the process of finding your place within it. DONATE:www.pcrf.netGet Involved:Operation Olive Branch: Spreadsheets + LinksGET AN OCCASIONAL PERSONAL EMAIL FROM ME: www.makeyourdamnbedpodcast.comTUNE IN ON INSTAGRAM FOR COOL CONTENT: www.instagram.com/mydbpodcastOR BE A REAL GEM + TUNE IN ON PATREON: www.patreon.com/MYDBpodcastOR WATCH ON YOUTUBE: www.youtube.com/juliemerica The opinions expressed by Julie Merica and Make Your Damn Bed Podcast are intended for entertainment purposes only. 1203 || life is absurd

E

Absurdism claims that existence, as a whole, is absurd and although objective meaning does not exist, it doesn't mean we can't find + create our own. We're allowed to change our minds + reflect at any time, because the only meaning that matters, is the meaning we decide matters. “The only way to deal with an unfree world is to become so absolutely free that your very existence is an act of rebellion”. — Albert CamusRESOURCE: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Absurdism#:~:text=Absurdism%20is%20the%20philosophical%20theory,a%20conflict%20with%20the%20world.DONATE:www.pcrf.netGet Involved:Operation Olive Branch: Spreadsheets + LinksGET AN OCCASIONAL PERSONAL EMAIL FROM ME: www.makeyourdamnbedpodcast.comTUNE IN ON INSTAGRAM FOR COOL CONTENT: www.instagram.com/mydbpodcastOR BE A REAL GEM + TUNE IN ON PATREON: www.patreon.com/MYDBpodcastOR WATCH ON YOUTUBE: www.youtube.com/juliemerica The opinions expressed by Julie Merica and Make Your Damn Bed Podcast are intended for entertainment purposes only. 1197 || social constructionism

E

Today we're talking about Vivien Burr's book: Social Constructionism. The key ideas are: language impacts our reality, our history + culture + social hierarchy impacts our language, and we should be critical of everything we consider "true" because of this socialization. 1195 || motivation rewind

E

decided on a compilation of past nuggets that never made it to the IG feed (or did they???) but came from our magical backlog of over 1100 episodes. hope you enjoy this as much as I did!Familiar will typically always be more comfortable than the unfamiliar. Even if that familiar is fairly unhealthy. Many people are miserable and comfortable. Many people can find comfort in sadness. There is no shame in it, because often, we’re so used to the sadness, anger, or shame that we don’t even realize there is another way. - Day 230You should never feel too cool to get enthusiastic about your life. Lean in, make your life romantic even if it’s not aesthetic or instagram worthy. Move in silence, focus on your mindset, and remember regularly how fucking dope the life you’ve created really is.A lot of us are numbing ourselves until the bad shit we can’t be numb for hits us in the teeth and then we go right back to numbing ourselves. That means some of us are literally only fully experiencing the bad shit. We are numb for the goodies and tap in only for the crisis and that is truly depressing. - Day 173Stop waiting for the other shoe to drop when good things are happening to you. You deserve good things to happen to you and they are happening because of your commitment to yourself. Just don’t forget to continue that commitment by honoring what you really need in each present moment. - Day 170Gravitate towards the things that bring you joy instead of waiting for them to knock on your door. Ask yourself regularly what would bring you the most peace in any given moment and pursue that shit with full force. - Day 181DONATE:www.pcrf.netGet Involved:Operation Olive Branch: Spreadsheets + LinksGET AN OCCASIONAL PERSONAL EMAIL FROM ME: www.makeyourdamnbedpodcast.comTUNE IN ON INSTAGRAM FOR COOL CONTENT: www.instagram.com/mydbpodcastOR BE A REAL GEM + TUNE IN ON PATREON: www.patreon.com/MYDBpodcastOR WATCH ON YOUTUBE: www.youtube.com/juliemerica The opinions expressed by Julie Merica and Make Your Damn Bed Podcast are intended for entertainment purposes only. Sometimes I feel guilty about seeking happiness when I consider the state of the world. 1183 || a pep talk for the hopeless

E

Tides change every day, and so can you. It’s never too late to change your scenery, to change your routine, to change your vibe, or change your perspective. You have some control, and even when you feel like you’ve lost it, I promise you, it’s within your grasp when you’re ready to pick up the reigns again.I wrote a “healing handbook” a long time ago, and never finished it, but I wrote this as the opening:WHEN IT COMES TO GETTING YOURSELF OUT OF A FUNK - START SMALL. BE PATIENT AND REMEMBER THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH TAKING TIME FOR YOURSELF. EVERYTHING IS TEMPORARY AND THE LESS WE RESIST THE HARD FEELINGS THE SOONER WE CAN GET OUT ON TOP OF THEM AGAIN. SO BREATHE. TAKE ALL THE TIME YOU NEED THE FACT OF THE MATTER IS - THE WORLD IS A BETTER PLACE BECAUSE YOU ARE IN IT. I KNOW IT MAY NOT FEEL THAT WAY RIGHT NOW BUT THERE ARE PEOPLE WHO ARE IN YOUR CORNER, + WE ARE ROOTING FOR YOU. EVEN IF YOU CAN'T SEE US. WE'RE HERE. IT’S IMPORTANT TO REMEMBER, THAT AS LONG AS YOU AREN'T HURTING YOURSELF OR OTHERS, YOU ARE ALLOWED TO GRIEVE HOWEVER YOU DAMN WELL PLEASE.THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NOTHING WRONG WITH YOU FOR FEELING THE WAY YOU FEEL RIGHT NOW. IT'S HUMAN. YOU'RE HUMAN.+ SOMETIMES BEING HUMAN REALLY FUCKIN' SUCKS. IT’S ALSO IMPORTANT TO REMEMBER THIS ISN’T PERMANENT. THE TOXIC THOUGHTS THAT HAVE BEGUN TO CREEP IN WILL EBB IN TIME WITH A LITTLE REDIRECTION. THE HOPE YOU LOST WILL BEGIN.TO RETURN + LIFE WILL LIGHTEN BACK UP AGAIN. I KNOW IT DOESN'T FEEL THAT WAY NOW, BUT RESPITE IS COMING.GO EASY ON YOURSELF IN THE MEANTIME. THIS REALLY SUCKS. THERE’S NO WAY AROUND IT. SUFFERING REALLY DOES FUCKING SUCK... BUT WITH TIME YOU'LL BEGIN TO HEAL. SLOWLY BUT SURELY, THE MAGIC WILL REAPPEAR AND YOU WILL BE GRATEFUL FOR THE VERSION OF YOU WHO STUCK THIS HARD PART OUT. SO KEEP STICKING IT OUT.YOU DESERVE TO THRIVE. YOU DESERVE TO FLOURISH. AND JUST LIKE YOU HAVE OVERCOME ALL THE SHIT BEFORE, YOU WILL ABSOLUTELY OVERCOME THIS SHIT, TOO. IT MAY ANNOY YOU TO HEAR BUT THERE'S NO DENYING THE FACT THAT YOU ARE A RESILIENT + POWERFUL BADASS. YOU AREN'T BROKEN, YOU JUST NEED A LITTLE BREAK. IF IT SUCKS, ALLOW IT TO SUCK, PROCESS IT AS IT IS SO YOU CAN ACTUALLY MOVE THE FUCK ON WHEN THE TIME IS RIGHT.DONATE:www.pcrf.netGet Involved:Operation Olive Branch: Spreadsheets + LinksGET AN OCCASIONAL PERSONAL EMAIL FROM ME: www.makeyourdamnbedpodcast.comTUNE IN ON INSTAGRAM FOR COOL CONTENT: www.instagram.com/mydbpodcastOR BE A REAL GEM + TUNE IN ON PATREON: www.patreon.com/MYDBpodcastOR WATCH ON YOUTUBE: www.youtube.com/juliemerica The opinions expressed by Julie Merica and Make Your Damn Bed Podcast are intended for entertainment purposes only. 1181 || my solution to overplanning

E

for me, it starts with getting more comfortable with doing rather than getting it done. i'm a creative and imaginative person, so if i were to plan for every potential experience, i would never stop planning. delegating tasks to myself like a manager has helped me put in perspective how much extra rumination and over-planning i have put on myself, and it's also helped me stop the cycle of over-thinking that often leaves me wanting to skip the "doing". 1180 || resetting after a rot session

E

it makes perfect logical sense that we choose to disassociate when we're feeling overwhelmed. if you've been in a perpetual cycle of overwhelm, it may help to focus on creating more space between you and the things that trigger that anxiety. it also may help to focus on one of the pillars of mental health: social connection, boundaries, time in nature, movement, mindfulness practice. in general, it's the endless "to-do list" that sends me back into my hole, so approaching those "to do's" with resources (friends, the internet, etc.) helps me to regain that sense of control that i lost when i was in the cycle of overwhelm. 1177 || field guide to rotting (how to disconnect with intention)

E

Disconnecting is an essential practice that I think a lot of us overlook the value of. For me, if I don’t take time to intentionally disconnect once in a while, my body will disconnect for me, without warning - in a way that is not easy to reconnect from. Of course, everyone’s experience with dissociation and disconnecting will be different. But - Here’s my personal field guide on how to rot with intention: It’s better to set yourself up before you need it. Listen to your body. Don’t let yourself get desperate for a break. Make a list of meals and snacks that make you feel better, things to do, or watch, or listen to, or play to help get you off of your phone, or people you can reach out to - even if it feels uncomfortable. A strategy that has worked for me is to imagine I am a kid with a cold, and then imagine how the best parental figure would take care of me to make me feel better. Think comfort foods, comfortable environments, and comfortable vibes. If this is tough for you, remember that relaxation is an investment. Your brain is a vital organ that benefits from rest. Rest is productive. It may help to change the language around it and call it recovery rather than rest. I also remind myself often that it is an act of rebellion to indulge in rest. But if you feel guilty or ashamed, remind yourself that is societal conditioning talking and not something you need to validate. Remember that it’s normal to want to disconnect from an overconnected world, and it can be healthy if we’re doing so with the knowledge that it’s not forever. That said, it is essential we address the need to escape at it’s core, in a healthy way. Needing to constantly detach and disconnect can be a sign of a deeper issue, such as anxiety, depression, dissociative disorder, and more, and it can lead to dangerous and unhealthy coping mechanisms like excessive screetime, and substance abuse. The real problem with chronic detachment is, like most things, the effects can be cyclical. These can further your feelings of despair/hopelessness and keep you from resetting - which is a natural part of the ebb and flow process of life. You can and must disconnect once in a while, but don’t get too lost and forget that the feeling of reconnection after a well deserved break, is often the best part. 1176 || sphere of influence vs. radius of awareness

E

Constant exposure to information and crisis can reduce our ability to react, respond, or move forward with hope. It's incredibly overwhelming to know everything without knowing what to do with it. You must take action in your own life, in your own community, in your own ecosystem - if you want to shed that feeling of hopelessness. Our investment in things we have no control over is exhausting + debilitating. The ripple effect of small changes is real. So take some small changes + see how much more hopeful you feel. We are NOT powerless. My life is now divided into 2 parts: the pre-Ayesha Khan version of me and the post-Ayesha Khan version of me. Ayesha Khan not only "gets it" but her hopefulness + intentionality has renewed my own hope.Today, we discuss the reality that our purpose IS community. It is connection + the rituals within those connections. We've been robbed from our interdependence, so we must be intentional with reclaiming it. 1173 || escaping the riptide of despair: patreon preview

E

Sometimes I’m painfully reminded that hope is really all we have. When I am suffering most from the effects of grief, the hopelessness becomes overbearing and all-consuming. It feels impossible to avoid and it typically makes me feel like that’s how things will “always” be. This is why, I often encourage myself (and others) to take action as a reminder that there is more than overthinking and dwelling in despair. The “touch grass” advice is always so funny to me - because that’s really all it takes sometimes. And maybe for you it’s not grass, because, if I’m honest, it’s not grass for me, either. But it is as small and accessible as grass - so I count it. Sometimes it’s the fresh air itself - reminding me that the world is still spinning. Other times it’s watching strangers going about their day - reminding me that the world is still spinning. But it’s always subtle, it’s always incomprehensibly tiny + it still seems to affect me so deeply. I think of all negative emotions, but especially hopelessness, like a ripcurrent. The more you resist it, the more it will exhaust all of your resources and cause you to panic and drown. You are really meant to let it sweep you away for a moment, then swim alongside it calmly for another, and then when you see it begin to clear, you can head safely to the shoreline with less struggle and resistance and pain. But it’s our natural inclination to swim against the current. To get the fuck out as fast as possible, and that would be back the way we came. But that’s not how emotions or riptides work. Similarly to a rip current, they are smooth looking on the surface but have traumatic and extreme conditions, right underneath - too deep to identify clearly but too powerful to resist logically. So we must get comfortable discarding logic every once in a while. We must learn to let the tides take us, and lean into the fear rather than the panic. To allow ourselves to flow with the current conditions + then, when it’s safe to do so, reflect + adjust our patterns to adapt to the new environment. Because sometimes, like a riptide, it can be more dangerous to resist the environment than it is to allow it to move us before we move away from it. RESOURCE LINKS: https://wokescientist.substack.com/p/we-keep-us-safe-by-fighting-backDONATE:www.pcrf.netGet Involved:Operation Olive Branch: Spreadsheets + LinksGET AN OCCASIONAL PERSONAL EMAIL FROM ME: www.makeyourdamnbedpodcast.comTUNE IN ON INSTAGRAM FOR COOL CONTENT: www.instagram.com/mydbpodcastOR BE A REAL GEM + TUNE IN ON PATREON: www.patreon.com/MYDBpodcastOR WATCH ON YOUTUBE: www.youtube.com/juliemerica The opinions expressed by Julie Merica and Make Your Damn Bed Podcast are intended for entertainment purposes only. 1169 || power structures + how to claim yours

E

Yesterday I rambled on about power structures and today I want to clarify some of those thoughts. Primarily when it comes to the definition of Power. When a concept is this abstract it carries a different meaning for different individuals - based on our experiences and situations. There are so many words that carry different meanings for people: power, democracy, equality - but the more we can discuss the different meanings and narrow down our definitions, the easier it is to communicate effectively, act effectively, and create change effectively. Luckily the commons library had plenty of valuable information to share and that’s where I stumbled upon: Srilatha Batliwala, All About Power: Understanding Social Power and Power Structures, where she acknowledges the nuance of understanding power in it’s many forms while also recognizing that we have to understand it fully to really achieve any kind of social change - regardless of our specific areas of work. Srilatha begins with this: “As activists, we are concerned about the injustice, inequality, marginalization, exclusion, discrimination, stigma, and violence that we see around us. But do we always recognize that power is at the heart of each of these, and at the heart of every social problem? Do we realize that injustice and inequality of every kind is actually an expression of power or a symptom of power structures? The fact is that power lies at the heart of human relationships and of how societies are organized. So when activists try to change people’s lives, or tackle the injustices they face, we are actually trying to change power equations.”RESOURCE: https://creaworld.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/All-About-Power.pdf DONATE:www.pcrf.netGet Involved:Operation Olive Branch: Spreadsheets + LinksGET AN OCCASIONAL PERSONAL EMAIL FROM ME: www.makeyourdamnbedpodcast.comTUNE IN ON INSTAGRAM FOR COOL CONTENT: www.instagram.com/mydbpodcastOR BE A REAL GEM + TUNE IN ON PATREON: www.patreon.com/MYDBpodcastOR WATCH ON YOUTUBE: www.youtube.com/juliemerica The opinions expressed by Julie Merica and Make Your Damn Bed Podcast are intended for entertainment purposes only. 1164 || the power of persuasion

E

Humans are animals and I can’t tell you how hard it is for me to remember that fact. This is why it feels like, every time I am reminded of that fact - that we are all just big dumb animals - there’s a part of me that is humbled but there is a bigger part of me that is relieved because it feels like my failings are less of a personal attack and more of a common symptom of what happens in the life of a human animal. One thing in particular I feel VERY conscious of my humanness in is when it comes to my struggles with restlessness and wanting - because there are billion dollar corporations manipulating our animal instincts to make us feel that way. The best shoppers are the restless, wanting shoppers + I spend every day resisting my urges to go buy a little trinket or tasty treat or new business venture for myself. Every time I see a targeted ad, I curse out that company’s marketing budget because it’s really violently targeted to what I want and they’re only getting more specific. My phone literally knows what I want before I do - often and that’s not only scary for privacy reasons, it’s also super fucking manipulative. 1163 || connecting through gift giving

E

It’s not about giving someone the world, it’s about making them feel like they are an important part of yours. Which means, it’s hard to do properly. It’s a ton of cognitive load to pay attention to, remember what, and constantly hunt for things with a perfect discernment. It’s really easy to fuck it up, and that’s okay too. I think,, fucks ups are easy to overlook if your intention is genuinely pure, and probably why we should be a little more socially conscious of the things people give to us. I do also find it powerful to recognize that if you focus too much on the reaction, you’re losing sight of the purpose of gift giving altogether. You wanna give them something nice, not force them to smile. Most people are just happy you thought of them at all, don’t overthink it if it’s becoming stressful, just lean into your first instincts, or do what I do, ask around and get some ideas for fan favorites, and again, so many people are just happy to get a gift, it doesn’t matter if it’s prolonged eye contact. That’s how attention starved so many of us are. It’s never been designed to work for the masses." - Murrawah Maroochy JohnsonRESOURCE: https://peoplesworld.org/article/how-an-aboriginal-woman-fought-a-coal-company-and-won/DONATE: https://www.pcrf.net/ GET INVOLVED:  Operation Olive Branch: Spreadsheets + LinksGET AN OCCASIONAL PERSONAL EMAIL FROM ME: www.makeyourdamnbedpodcast.comTUNE IN ON INSTAGRAM FOR COOL CONTENT: www.instagram.com/mydbpodcastOR BE A REAL GEM + TUNE IN ON PATREON: www.patreon.com/MYDBpodcastOR WATCH ON YOUTUBE: www.youtube.com/juliemerica The opinions expressed by Julie Merica and Make Your Damn Bed Podcast are intended for entertainment purposes only. Make Your Damn Bed podcast is not intended or implied to be a substitute for professional medical advice, diagnosis or treatment.According to Deepak Chopra: "Language and action go together. If you are stuck in the metaphor of war, with its winners and losers, revenge, enmities that last for generations, and the macho image of the warrior, you can never end war even though you want to.There is no clean end to war once you are in a war mentality. Winners in one war become losers the next, and combat runs into a quagmire in which it is obvious that neither side will be able to claim victory,. As history teaches us from World War I to Afghanistan, wars are at once pointless, relentless, and endless. War heroes on one side are war criminals on the other. There is a way to end war, and one sees signs of the solution appearing wherever people realize that we share the same goal, to achieve a prosperous, healthy, sustainable planet. War doesn’t serve this shared goal, and the question is how long it will take for a positive global purpose to overshadow the metaphor of war that is embedded in nationalism, tribalism, racial and ethnic divides, and the other fellow travelers of war. All of these divisions are mind-made. They exist because we constructed them, and the secret is that whatever you made you can unmake."LINKS + RESOURCES: https://www.wsws.org/en/articles/2016/02/18/icfi-f18.html https://choprafoundation.org/consciousness/10-ways-to-resolve-all-conflicts-and-end-war/ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anti-war_movement Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/make-your-damn-bed. 1158 || ban the billionaires

E

You cannot earn a billion dollars. You can take a billion dollars, but you can't make it. Every billionaire has built their "empire" off of the exploitation of laborers. UNFUN FACTS:Jeff Bezos could give every single one of his 876,000 employees a $105,000 bonus and he’d still be as rich as he was at the start of the pandemic. The median U.S. salary is $34,612, but even if you tripled that and saved every penny for a lifetime, you still wouldn’t accumulate anywhere close to a billion dollars.Jeff Bezos makes $149,353.12 EVERY SINGLE MINUTE. Every 14 minutes, Elon Musk earns as much as an average american earns in their entire lifetime. Full time employees at Walmart + Amazon are the biggest utilizers of federal food programs like SNAP and Welfare. While the CEO's make more money than is possible to spend in a lifetime. Something's gotta give. Utopia feels far away, post-scarcity feels less so.According to wikipedia: Post-scarcity is a theoretical economic situation in which most goods can be produced in great abundance with minimal human labor needed, so that they become available to all very cheaply or even freely.[1][2] Post-scarcity does not mean that scarcity has been eliminated for all goods and services but that all people can easily have their basic survival needs met along with some significant proportion of their desires for goods and services.[3] Writers on the topic often emphasize that some commodities will remain scarce in a post-scarcity society.RESOURCES: https://lorenzopieri.com/post_scarcity/ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Post-scarcity DONATE: https://www.pcrf.net/ GET INVOLVED:  Operation Olive Branch: Spreadsheets + LinksGET AN OCCASIONAL PERSONAL EMAIL FROM ME: www.makeyourdamnbedpodcast.comTUNE IN ON INSTAGRAM FOR COOL CONTENT: www.instagram.com/mydbpodcastOR BE A REAL GEM + TUNE IN ON PATREON: www.patreon.com/MYDBpodcastOR WATCH ON YOUTUBE: www.youtube.com/juliemerica The opinions expressed by Julie Merica and Make Your Damn Bed Podcast are intended for entertainment purposes only.
