AEDs & Top Craft Picks

It's Friday, which means a visit from Mark Husen with Bellin Sports Medicine. By special request, Mark brings in an AED unit to give Jim, John, and our listeners a quick tutorial on how to use them. According to Mark, the big thing about AEDs is to turn the unit on. The unit will walk the user through the steps needed to check heart rate and determine if and when a shock might be required. A very important bit of information! Then the guys are joined by Bryce Retzer from Ledgerock Distillery, one of the participants in the Maino & The Mayor Top Craft Pick promotion that's currently underway. From vodkas to bourbons and everything in between, the grains used are from their farm on the ledge just south of Fond du Lac. Using the limestone-filtered water, also found on the farm, they truly create farm-to-table products. Maino and the Mayor is a part of the Civic Media radio network and airs Monday through Friday from 6-9 am on WGBW in Green Bay and on WISS in Appleton/Oshkosh. TGI Friday!

We're all ready for the weekend!! Friday meanderings include Maino blaming Jim for a cut on his foot. Here's the quick version of what happened: Jim gave John a BIG salad. Jim suggested adding some chicken or something spicy. Maino decided to use some jarred jalapeno peppers. He dropped the jar. He decided not to do anything with it. He went to bed. He woke up to use the bathroom in the middle of the night. He cut the bottom of his foot. Maino Logic follows that Jim is responsible for the cut and pain he is dealing with. Then Lisa Hale with NEWisco Weekend joins to give us a rundown of the stories we'll hear at 8 am on Saturday or 11 am on Sunday. This week's show will focus on vacations and "staycations". Maino and the Mayor is a part of the Civic Media radio network and airs Monday through Friday from 6-9 am on WGBW in Green Bay and on WISS in Appleton/Oshkosh. Remembering Vietnam

We continue our special show to honor the 50th Anniversary of the Vietnam War's end. This hour, we feature a great friend of the show, Jim Van Den Heuvel, a local Vietnam Veteran. One of the amazing stories he shares is about his last days in Vietnam and how he was left alone overnight with the Viet Cong all around him. This is an amazing story from a man who continues to do everything he can to help fellow veterans. Thank you, Jim. For your Vietnam service to our country and your continued service in our community. This Veteran's Salute is courtesy of Olson Legal Group, LLC in Berlin and Oshkosh. Remembering Vietnam

We continue our special program honoring the 50th anniversary of the end of the Vietnam War (March 29th). Gail and Kim Nohr with Veterans 1st of Northeast Wisconsin join Jim and John to give us an update on the tiny home village they're trying to build to help housing insecure veterans have a stable start toward owning or renting their own housing. They share the good news that, hopefully, after several hurdles, they're getting closer to breaking ground on this project. We offer our respect and thanks to Kim and Gail for their hard work on this very important project. Then, Joe Aulik from the Brown County Veterans Services office joins the show to encourage Veterans to do a yearly check-in with the local offices to see what services and offerings are available. From health care to education funds and more, Joe says it's important to do a yearly check-in because programs continue to change and, in some cases, expand. It's another Thursday, and that means "trucker songs!" Today, we're also having a special show as we remember the 50th anniversary of the end of the Vietnam War. We're joined in the second half of the hour by Jacob VandenPlas with The Door County Farm for Vets. Jacob is a Veteran, farmer, and truck driver. Headlines and A Slice!

Janelle Fisher from the Green Bay Press Times brings Marc Jimos and Ellen Moon with the Ashwaubenon High School Band. The band just returned from performing in New York for the St. Patrick's Day Parade. We're impressed with the experiences these kids and their band directors can take part in. A GREAT local story. That story leads into another great story of a five-generation business in Two Rivers! Schroeder's Department store is featured in Teri Barr's new "Slice of Wisconsin" feature, and she gives Jim and John an exclusive kick-off of the story! Maldonado & The Malcores

The guys are joined by Sai Maldonado, a local boxer who's preparing for the Golden Gloves in April. Originally from Puerto Rico, he got into boxing at the age of 9, with his father as his coach. Part of his training includes hitting the gym three times a day. Sai is hoping to go pro in the next 12 months, and with his determination, our bet is he'll pull it off and rock it! Keep an eye out for this kid! Then we're Moving With The Malcores, Ben & Deanna Malcore. They give us a great rundown of some of their available properties. Spencer & Ace

Two wonderful local artists are in the studio this hour. First, Spencer Nolan Young, who has painted the famous Packer fences for the past several years, cleats for the players, and many other projects in Northeast Wisconsin and all over the country. The guys try to get Spencer to open up about his plans for the upcoming draft, but Spencer keeps it close to the vest. Spencer also agrees to a fundraising project that Jim and John have created to raise money for the New Community Shelter and a Veterans' Breakfast project. Then, another great local artist, Ace Champion, pulls up with food, flutes and FIRE! He's planning a great cooking class at Paradise North Distillery this Thursday night! He also flambes some bananas foster. (He let Maino do the flambe-ing, and we were all a little worried). Challenge Coins & Apple Blossoms

Kevin Osgood and John Craemer from the USCG Auxiliary join the show to promote boating safety courses. It's that time of year again, and Kevin and John say that about 80% of people on the water have not taken a safety course. We're hoping to help change that. You can click HERE to see the upcoming dates for courses in Northeast Wisconsin. John and Kevin also presented Challenge Coins to Jim, John, and Todd. It was an amazing honor. Then another amazing friend stops by: Babs Smith. Her organization is planting another 50 apple blossom trees in with the Apple Blossom tree planting event at the Apple Creek Trail at Cherryvale Avenue in Appleton. It's coming up on Thursday, May 8th, at 10 am. Babs also released her latest book: Day Tripping Kayak Wisconsin Waters of Green Bay West Shore: Green Bay to Garden Peninsula Upper Michigan. Grumpier Old Men

We're only in the show for three minutes, and Jim and John are crabbing about various things. From gas pumps to whether or not Maino is related to John the Baptist, the grumpiness really comes through. Then, the conversation turns to the first concerts we all went to. It's also Waffle Day, and there's a disagreement about whether or not waffles are good. It's also Maryland Day, and Maino proclaims that Maryland is the weirdest state. And then, the guys talk about the fact that they don't like to sit too close to other people. Weekly Best of Maino and the Mayor for Mar 22

Dennis Peters remains in the co-host chair while Jim continues his vacation. Mark Husen from Bellin Sports Medicine joins to help Dennis make a very important announcement: Dennis has been diagnosed with stage four prostate cancer. Devastating news for Dennis and his family and friends (radio friends included). However, the reason he wanted to do the special segment is to make the point that you should take care of yourself, advocate for yourself, and not disregard signs of illness. We thank Dennis for allowing us to be the venue for making this announcement. The meaningful hour continues when Cari Josephson from the Walk To End Alzheimer's brings a special guest with her: former Wisconsin Governor Marty Schreiber. Governor Schreiber has recently penned a book called My Two Elaines about his story of caregiving for his wife, Elaine. He writes about having to watch his beloved wife gradually transform from the woman who had gracefully entertained in the Executive Residence to one who sometimes no longer recognized him as her husband. Net proceeds from the sales of My Two Elaines will be used to promote Alzheimer’s caregiver support programs. Distilleries & Son Reis Project

Dennis Peters joins us again this hour. Our friends Jim and Suzi Ploetz join the show again as "competitors" in the Maino & The Mayor's Top Craft Pick promotion! They own and operate New Denmark Brewing and Duck Creek Winery & Distillery. They started home-brewing beer back in the early 1990s. In 2013, they opened the winery because of their passion for wine-making and growing grapes and after winning several amateur ribbons at the Wisconsin State Fair. After a few years, they wanted to get into creating distilled spirits. In 2018, they released several spirits: whiskey, vodka, gin, rum, brandy, and several flavored moonshines. Then Ashley McDermid flies in (almost literally) for the Heights Pub & Parlor Music Series. Today we welcome Jason Reisdorf, Jason Goessl and Ryan Thomas from "Son Reis Project." Their Facebook page explains their music thusly: "Son Reis Project (SRP) is a sonic exploration at the intersection of heavy metal, free jazz, and punk." All we know is that it was a fun and eclectic way to end a great week of radio shows!! Sports Medicine & Monster Jam!

Dr. Ryan Berns sits in for Mark Husen from Bellin Sports Medicine! Dr. Ryan Berns is Bellin's new Sports Medicine Physician and Medical Director. Dr. Berns tells us a bit about his background but also about some of the injuries that are becoming more prevalent, especially for young athletes who begin specializing in a single sport at an early age. He really suggests being active in a few sports rather than focusing on just one. Then, Terry Charles with PMI joins to promote this weekend's Monster Jam at the Resch Center! Driver Matt Cody joins to talk about his experience in the sport. Matt wasn’t even old enough to drive when he started working on monster trucks as an eighth grader. Growing up in Maryland, he was centrally located to assist Mike Vaters of Black Stallion, who provided Cody with early education by allowing the youngster to serve as a crew member. Maino & Moran Hour 2

Beth Kowalski from the Neville Public Museum joins John and guest co-host Vanessa Moran to discuss the extended hours they've implemented for spring break. Her visit is another great reminder of this great resource in our community. From ever-changing displays to club meetings and more, we LOVE the Neville and Beth! Then, our guest host, Vanessa Moran, takes time to talk about the charity she works with, Feed My Starving Children. Her work with the organization is how we met her last year. Every year, millions of children die from preventable causes such as pneumonia, diarrhea, malaria, and undernutrition. Hunger is still causing nearly half of deaths in children under 5 years old. Vanessa says over 6000 children die every day from hunger. Just children, 18 and under. Click the link if you'd like to make a difference. Nate Olson, a friend of the show and a leader in the community with Olson Legal Group, LLC in Oshkosh and Berlin, is back in the studio with the guys.
