Bill Zito did what most people saw as improbable and will have the band back together as the Cats have a chance to go for a three-peat. What to the clauses look like for both Ekblad and Marchand? Now the Panthers have a core...10? Yes, a core 10, something you don't see much in hockey as the salary cap will continue to go up, and the Panthers will only need to add depth pieces in future free agency periods. Right now the Panthers would not be able to put out a full lineup if opening night were tomorrow, but there will be a player that will be purged from the roster in order to make everybody fit, as July 1st will now be about getting under the cap while the rest of the NHL is trying to take down the Panthers with a possible big deal free agent move. On today's edition of the Locked On FLORIDA Panthers Podcast, Armando Velez(@Mandoman12) brought in Jacob Winans(@JacobWinans8) for another edition of Winans Wednesday, as the Florida Panthers defeated the Edmonton Oilers by a final of 5-1 in Game 6 of the Stanley Cup Final to clinch their second straight Stanley Cup title at home. It was a dominant performance from the start with limiting the Oilers high danger chances, where Florida was able to dictate the tempo, with the Panthers counterattacking with disrupting plays in the neutral zone. Sam Reinhart got on the scoresheet four times to become the first Panther to get a playoff hat trick. Florida kept the Oilers to forcing their shots to the point where Sergei Bobrovsky was able to see pucks easily through screens, and able to make two big stops on quick odd man rushes on Corey Perry. The two discuss Sam Bennett winning the Conn Smythe after scoring 15 goals in the postseason, which he is on the same echelon as Sidney Crosby and Alexander Ovechkin in their Stanley Cup runs. Bennett is a pending UFA, and the two discuss the report of what he could sign for and how important it is for both sides to stay together beyond this season. The two also chat how the Stanley Cup was passed around as it was the guys who had not won the Cup until Tuesday night were the ones to get it after Captain Aleksander Barkov, what does that say about the leadership of the group? On today's edition of the Locked On FLORIDA Panthers Podcast, Armando Velez(@Mandoman12) brought in David Dwork(@DavidDwork) of The Hockey News and The Hockey Show of LeBatard and Friends Network to preview Game 6 of the Stanley Cup Final. We get David's thoughts on the series to this point as he made his return to Florida after traveling to Alberta for Game 5, as how the Cats have been able to score in bunches early on in game. The two chat about how important recovery has been with Game 6 being their 314th game over the last three seasons, regular season and playoffs and how it's helped them stay fresh for a Cup clincher on Tuesday. Paul Maurice has been able to roll the same lineup with the exception of a few injuries, the two discuss how much of a luxury it's been to see the continuity in the roster while Edmonton continues to scramble while not even naming a starting goaltender for an elimination game. Lastly, it's the final home game of the season for the Panthers, and they are hoping that it's the final game in general. On today's edition of the Locked On FLORIDA Panthers Podcast, Armando Velez(@Mandoman12) brought in Frank Forte(@FrankForte) to the show to break down the Panthers 5-2 win in game 5 of the Stanley Cup Final. The Cats took full control after Brad Marchand scored the first of his two goals midway through the first period, the Panthers didn't allow a shot for the rest of the period, and were able to get to their game, as the Panthers had as much as a three-goal lead in the third period on Marchand's second goal. Although the Oilers scored to cut it to two, the Panthers put the final nail in the coffin when Sam Reinhart got on the scoresheet making it a 4-1 game. It's been a historic Stanley Cup Final with the amount of goals, but the Panthers were able to turn Game 5 into a low event game. The Panthers seem to have things completely figured out while Edmonton continues to make lineup change after lineup change in order to try to match what the Panthers continue to throw at them. The two break down the Panthers 5-4 OT loss at the hands of the Edmonton Oilers, where the Panthers blew a 3-0 lead after the first period. Florida chased Stuart Skinner and once Calvin Pickard was between the pipes, the Oilers turned it on from there and flipped the script. Three goals in the second period by Edmonton, and it was a new hockey game. The Oilers continued their scoring in the third as they even took the lead, but the Cats scored with the extra attacker with 20 seconds left in the third to force overtime, but although the Panthers controlled play in the extra period, a little miscommunication from the long change resulted in the Oilers going up the ice and Leon Draisaitl ending it for his third goal of the series. Matthew Tkachuk scored his first power play goal(s) since round one, but the Panthers couldn't continues on their pressure on the forecheck after period one, and Edmonton's speed game helped them generating a whole bunch on Sergei Bobrovsky. On today's edition of the Locked On FLORIDA Panthers Podcast, Armando Velez(@Mandoman12) brought in Josh Leucht to the show to break down the Panthers 6-1 beat down of the Edmonton Oilers, where they took the early lead one minute in, and had their foot on the gas from there. It was a penalty filled game, but prior to the Panthers taking a mult-goal lead, the penalty kill set the tone having Connor McDavid going around in circles. It was the second power play unit for the Panthers delivering again, as the top guys were on the ice for the PK's, they were able to create separation. Florida was able to get under the Oilers skin from start to finish, and it went to another level in the third period as multiple players got their fair share of misconducts. The Panthers chased Stuart Skinner in game 3, but with the beat down in Sunrise, there's a lesson that they could take being on the winning side of a demolition vs being on the losing side in game 4 of the SCF just last year. The two discuss their impressions of the first two games, and what rare company we all got to witness as it was the sixth time in Stanley Cup Final History that they first two games of the series both went to OT. The two discus a major advantage that the Panthers could now have going into Game 3 with the status of Oilers Forward Ryan Nugent-Hopkins up in the air as he is a game-time decision for Monday night. There was also a switch in the defensive pairs as each pair was different at Oilers practice on Sunday, could the Panthers pounce? On today's edition of the Locked On FLORIDA Panthers Podcast, Armando Velez(@Mandoman12) brought in Jackson Holzer(@JacksonH_52) to the show to break down the Panthers 5-4 2OT win over the Edmonton Oilers in Game 2 of the Stanley Cup Final. It was a high event first period where we saw seven penalties and five goals scored in the frame. Florida started to control play where they scored twice taking the lead into the third. Panthers were trying to play shutdown defense in the third period, but their lack of offensive zone time had the Oilers pushing, and after multiple draws lost, Edmonton was able to tie the game with 17 seconds left to force overtime. The Oilers were the ones in control of the first OT, where the Cats had more than one chance to end it, but the Panthers were the ones who controlled the second OT, giving up only one SOG, and then it was Brad Marchand who delivered for his second goal of the game eight minutes into the second OT to give the Panthers the win and to tie the series at one. The two discuss how they were able to get to Edmonton's top players as Connor McDavid played more minutes than any Oilers defenseman, and how it was the Panthers this time rolling the lines. On today's edition of the Locked On FLORIDA Panthers Podcast, Armando Velez(@Mandoman12) brought in Josh Appel(@JoshAppel) from 560 WQAM to the show to break down the Panthers 4-3 OT loss against the Edmonton Oilers in Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Final. Panthers were able to have a lead in the first period despite Edmonton having the ice tilted in their favor, a failed coaches challenge by Edmonton had the Panthers taking advantage with two goals in 1:41. Florida took the lead in the second period and had a 3-1 lead, but it didn't even last two minutes, as Viktor Arvidsson's shot from the rush got a piece of Sergei Bobrovsky and past him to make it 3-2, Florida couldn't shut things down with it being a one-goal game for a good portion of the night. After the second period, it was all Edmonton, after they got their first shot 6 minutes into the game, Matias Ekholm found the back of the net to tie the game at 3. Florida only had eight shots on net from the end of the second period on, and looked gas. Florida couldn't break out of their zone well and iced the puck multiple times, and one of those failed breaks came when Tomas Nosek was called for delay of game, puck over glass towards the end of OT, and Leon Draisaitl scored to give the Oilers a 1-0 series lead. That was his second goal of the night after having zero in last years final. We spoke about these two teams becoming better, and it took until 30 seconds left in the first OT for the game to be decided. Is that a caused for optimism? The guys their three duds of the game, when they knew the game was lost, and despite the loss, there was a franchise and NHL record set on the evening. On today's edition of the Locked On FLORIDA Panthers Podcast, Armando Velez(@Mandoman12) brought in David Lasseter to the show to break down the Panthers 5-3 win over the Carolina Hurricanes in Game 5, where the Panthers had to do it in comeback fashion. The Panthers had a sloppy first period where the goals ended up in the back of their net after poor passes in the neutral zone. The Panthers woke up in the second period with three goals in three shots in less than five minute span, including a goal that ended a drought of 10 power play opportunities without scoring, and Evan Rodrigues getting his first goal of the postseason, which makes it now 19 different goal scorers for the Panthers. Although the Canes tied it off a poor backhand pass from Gustav Forsling, Panthers Captain Aleskander Barkov fought off a check from Carolina and had a wonderful set up to Carter Verhaeghe, which ended up as the winner. Florida then capitalized on the empty netter where it was a lot of zone time, but only one shot on net on the 6-on-4 opportunity. It's five different goal scorers on the night, and doing so with having 10 forwards for most of the game with AJ Greer and Eetu Luostarinen sustaining injuries. The two provide their three stars of the game, when they knew the series was won, and discuss the feeling of a third straight Stanley Cup Final, the elite company that they're in over the last 45 years(the NHL/WHA merger) with only four teams making three straight Stanley Cup Final's. On today's edition of the Locked On FLORIDA Panthers Podcast, Armando Velez(@Mandoman12) brought in Nich Fairbanks(@Prudentia0) for another edition of Fairbanks Friday, as the Panthers got out to a 2-0 series lead after defeating the Carolina Hurricanes by a final of 5-0. The second line set the tone for the Cats they their forecheck was a force, created the first two goals. Now Gustav Forsling has joined in on the scoring as now it's 18 different goal scorers for them in 14 playoff games. The Cats got the best out of Andrei Svechnikov as he committed the turnovers that led to the first two goals, along with going to the box after an unnecessary roughing call on Matthew Tkachuk that the Panthers converted on the power play. The Canes looked to have cut it to a 3-1 deficit, but the Panthers bought time by using a timeout to look at the replay again where it was Brent Burns who touched the puck as it re-entered the Panthers zone, and before Carolina could tag up at the blue line, it was ruled an offside. Panthers continued to come in waves even after losing Sam Reinhart after a knee-on-knee collision from Sebastian Aho as the Panthers were gaining the zone, and did not return. How much of a concern is there now as the series shifts to Sunrise? Panthers set a record for most road playoff goals in their first nine games, and it's May 22nd and Sergei Bobrovsky has a shutout, something done two other times on this date. On today's edition of the Locked On FLORIDA Panthers Podcast, Armando Velez(@Mandoman12) brought in Jacob Winans(@JacobWinans8) for another edition of Winans Wednesday. The two break down the Panthers' 5-2 win over the Carolina Hurricanes in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Final. The Panthers were risk profile was pretty high when it came to getting their defense to jump up in the play, but thankfully early stops by Sergei Bobrovsky was able to make stops right before Carter Verhaeghe capitalized on the power play. The Panthers were able to capitalize on Carolina's mistakes as veteran Jordan Staal heard footsteps from Evan Rodrigues, which resulted in a giveaway that ended up in the back of the net, along with a delay of game penalty in the third that resulted in another power play goal. The Hurricanes only gave up two on the penalty kill in the playoffs before Tuesday night, and the Panthers matched it in one game. Also, the Canes' rush defense was number one going into the ECF, but the Panthers scored a big goal in the second period to get to a two-goal lead as Niko Mikkola avoided the forecheck, jumped into the offense and had a beautiful set up to AJ Greer to make it 3-1. Things got ugly as Bobrovsky was bumped into multiple times on the night, including on two consecutive shifts by the Hurricanes, and Brad Marchand finished a check late on Shayne Gostisbehere, and as Gostisbehere tried to clear the Carolina zone, he shot the puck into Marchand (which he later admitted was on purpose), and the gloves came off. Florida continued to get into their opponents head, and were able to do it to what people consider one of the most disciplined teams in the NHL. Florida was able to hold lines 2-4 of Carolina to nine total shots of their 33 as the Panthers were able to manage the multiple shots that were coming from the point. On today's edition of the Locked On FLORIDA Panthers Podcast, Armando Velez(@Mandoman12) brought in David Lasseter to recap the Panthers 6-1 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs as the Panthers were ready from the jump with getting the first 20+ shot attempts and they swamed the Leafs. Although the Leafs tiled the ice after their first shot 12 minutes in, it was a 0-0 game heading into the second. Florida's blue line was pretty leaky at the end of the first where the Leafs bottom six got their chances off the rush, but the Panthers were able to keep it scoreless. The floodgates started to open in the second period, starting with a goal off the rush by Seth Jones, where he would also get an assist on a high hockey IQ play where he prevented the play from being offside as the Panthers started to pour it on. Another trade acquisition in Brad Marchand got involved in the game, where he is used to playing the Leafs in a Game 7, and he made his mark as the Cats continued to come in waves with their on-puck pressure in the offensive zone, Marchand finished with 3 point (1,2) on the night. More importantly, during the long change period, the cats cleaned up the rush defense. Although the Leafs scored off a poor line change, the Panthers responded 47 second later and put their foot on the Leafs throat with Eetu Luostarinen redirecting Brad Marchand's shot passed Joseph Woll. Luostarinen now leads the NHL in most road points during the Stanley Cup playoffs and has been a key contributor to the top nine and the PK. The Panthers got two road wins in Toronto and have now advanced to their third straight conference final, where it'll be a rematch of the 2023 ECF, where the Panthers swept the Hurricanes, all by one goal in each game. The Canes lost a few pieces in the offseason and were still able to have their play style get them as the final four in the NHL. The Panthers similarly to their game 7 win in Boston in 2023, they'll have a quick turnaround as they will quickly turn around and make a trip to another city before eventually returning home. On today's edition of the Locked On FLORIDA Panthers Podcast, Armando Velez(@Mandoman12) brought in Alex Donno(@AlexDonno) from the Florida Panthers Radio Network and Locked On Canes to the show to break down the Panthers' 6-1 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs to take a 3-2 series lead back to Sunrise. The Panthers made a lineup change with bringing in Jesper Boqvist into the lineup, and after a tight first few minutes, the game started opening up and the Panthers started controlling the play, where they were able to help produce the first goal by Aaron Ekblad. It didn't stop there as the Panthers killed off Toronto's PP chance to start the second period and from there began the onslaught with three second period goals as the Leafs consistently broke the puck out poorly. The Panthers added some additional offensive zone time and it result in more goals ending up in the back of their net, including Jesper Boqvist's first career playoff goal off a 3-on-2. That was also his first goal since January 25th. Florida was also able to get goal right off the draws on multiple occasions, as AJ Greer also got his first career playoff goal. The scoring by committee approach continued as the Cats chased Joseph Woll after the fifth goal. The game got physical as Brad Marchand gave a smirk to Leafs fans chirping him as he went off the ice for a 10-minute misconduct, and the fans in Toronto started heading to the exits early and we saw a couple of jerseys being thrown on the ice after the loss for the Leafs. The key for the Panthers was once again stopping the Leafs stars as Auston Matthews was once again scoreless, which their only goal scorer came from Nick Robertson, who had not played in the series until Game 5. Now the Panthers will return home with a chance to end it and advance to their third straight eastern conference final. On today's edition of the Locked On FLORIDA Panthers Podcast, Armando Velez(@Mandoman12) is joined by Frank Rekas(@FrankRekas) to discuss the Panthers' 2-0 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs in Game 4 to tie the series at 2. The Panthers were dominant from start to finish and were able to have the ice tilted in their favor as the Leafs shot themselves in the foot with penalties early on. It took the Panthers a while to get their power play going, but Matthew Tkachuk found Verhaeghe on a backdoor pass and Verhaeghe as the Cats got the first lead of the game. Florida gave Toronto very little to work with as Sergei Bobrovsky didn't have much action on his end. Toronto had very little breakaway chances, where Bobrovsky was able to stop William Nylander on one, and Matthew Knies completely misses the net on the other. It was still a tightly contested game despite the shot discrepancy being in the Panthers favor, but a disruption in the neutral zone gave the Panthers a two goal lead midway through the third period as Sam Bennett scored his fifth off a filthy move on Joseph Woll. The Panthers ended the game without Evan Rodrigues who went to the locker room in the third after getting interfered by former Panthers Oliver Ekman-Larsson. Tensions got high as Max Domi took a run at Aleksander Barkov at the end being called for boarding. Will he get suspended for Game 3. On today's edition of the Locked On FLORIDA Panthers Podcast, Armando Velez(@Mandoman12) brought in Florida Panthers Historian, Francisco Oporta(@FLACatsHistory) to break down the Panthers' 5-4 OT win over the Toronto Maple Leafs as they cut the series to a 2-1 deficit. Florida trailed twice, 2-0 and 3-1, but three second period goals had the Panthers going into the third period with a lead. Florida was able to eliminate the Leafs speed in the second and third period and it helped them get to their game. A bounce that deflected off of Seth Jones and into the net had the Leafs forcing overtime. After the 10 minute mark in overtime, Florida was controlling play, and eventually it was Brad Marchand who ended it 15:27 into the first OT off the forecheck. All lines were a factor, including the fourth line where Maurice made a surprising lineup change ahead of the game putting in AJ Greer, Tomas Nosek and Jonah Gadjovich into the game, and it resulted in the go ahead goal in the second period. On today's edition of the Locked On FLORIDA Panthers Podcast, Armando Velez(@Mandoman12) brought in Adam Lichtenstein(@ABLichtenstein) of the South Florida Sun Sentinel to the show to break down the Panthers' 4-3 loss to the Toronto Maple Leafs. It was not as slow of a first period for the Panthers as it was in game one, but the Panthers did get their fair share of penalty trouble in the first, the Cats however got the first lead of the game thanks to Aleksander Barkov, just 5 seconds into the PP. They would not go into the second tied as Max Pacioretty struck again getting a power play goal himself. After the Panthers got the first goal of the second period 15 seconds in from the third line, Toronto once again responded just over 4 minutes later off the rush. The Leafs rush chances continued to bite Florida as they got another one at the end of the second period to take the lead into the third. It was another counter punch for Toronto as the Panthers tied it at three just over 5 minutes into the third, but Toronto responded 17 seconds later thanks to Mitch Marner. It was another third period where the Panthers controlled play, but this time it did not feel as if the Leafs were on their toes. In fact, Toronto looked quite comfortable in getting in front of pucks and battling around the net front. Toronto also did not give in to Florida's mental games with the exception of a minutes after Evan Rodrigues getting called for embellishment. Florida has a chance to take the lead midway through the second period, but got zero shots on the power play.The Panthers had Mackie Samoskevich back in the lineup along with Aaron Ekblad, and at the start of the third period, Maurice did place Samoskevich back on the Bennett line to try to counter Toronto's speed, and had one of the best chances of the night, but Leafs Goaltender Joseph Woll stood tall to keep the one-goal lead. The two discuss their three duds of the game, when they knew the game was lost, and how there are no silver linings this time around as the series shifts to Sunrise.
