On today's edition of the Locked On FLORIDA Panthers Podcast, Armando Velez(@Mandoman12) brought in Jacob Langsam(@PTPJacob) of Panther Pourri to break down the Panthers' 5-4 loss to the Toronto Maple Leafs in Game One of round two, where the Panthers played from behind from the start after giving up the first goal 33 seconds into the game. The Leafs were able to stifle the Panthers only allowing four shots on goal in the first where they did not allow the Panthers to get their forecheck going with quick breakout passes, and were able to match the Panthers' physicality on the night. Florida's rush defense was a major issue on the evening as three of Toronto's five goals came off the rush, as Florida has been exceptional with limiting breakaways. The Cats were able to tilt the ice in the second period, but Toronto was able to get on the scoresheet again after a face off win and a goal from the point from Chris Tanev. Florida was able to get two goals in the first five minutes of the third to make it a game after Anthony Stolarz was replaced by Joseph Woll back in the second period, but the comeback fell short as they got one goal with the extra attacker, but could not force over time. The guys give their three duds of the game, when they knew the game was lost, and discuss their optimism despite the Panthers dropping game one. They also discuss whether they think Sam Bennett will face any discipline from the NHL after he collided with Anthony Stolarz while on the power play in the second period. On today's edition of the Locked On FLORIDA Panthers Podcast, Armando Velez(@Mandoman12) brought in Jackson Holzer(@JacksonH_52) to the show to break down the Panthers' 5-1 loss in Game 3. Matthew Tkachuk scored in the first three minutes of the game, and the Panthers did nothing from there. The first period was a possession heavy period for the Panthers right before Tampa Bay scored. Second period on had very little space available, and Tampa Bay took the lead off a poor breakout and off a give-n-go by Nick Paul. Panthers drew a penalty toward the end of the second, with a bit 4-on-4 time before they got on the power play, Tampa bay scored with 3 seconds left at 4-on-4 with another assist from Nikita Kucherov from behind the net, and it was all Tampa Bay from there. As the Bolts were about to score on the empty net, Tkachuk laid an interference call on Jake Guentzel that result in a 5-minute major, will the NHL come down on him like they did on Brandon Hagel? The Panthers also shifted their top 9 and power play with Carter Verhaeghe getting back on the first unit and Aaron Ekblad getting some PP2 time. On today's edition of the Locked On FLORIDA Panthers Podcast, Armando Velez(@Mandoman12) brought in Rod Pedersen(@RodPedersen) of the Cats n' Bolts Podcast and the Rod Pedersen Show to break down the Panthers' 2-0 win over the Tampa Bay Lightning, where it was a low-event hockey game, where there was one goal scored 4:15 into the first period, and nothing else before Sam Bennett capped it off with an empty-net goal. Nate Schmidt struck again with his third goal in the first two games after having five all season, and was a goal that beat Andrei Vasilevskiy on the far side blocker with no screen in front after the Lightning iced the puck. The physicality started to pick up as there were more post whistle scrums in game 2 in comparison to the previous.The Panthers went to the box five times, and their league best road penalty kill was put to the test where they went a perfect 5/5, including multiple kills that results in zero shots due to them meeting the Bolts at the blue line as they tried to gain the zone. It was another game where Tampa Bay led in shot attempts, but the Panthers commitment to shot blocking and Sergei Bobrovsky being able to see the puck helped guide the Panthers to their shutout win and a 2-0 series lead before they head home to Sunrise. The Panthers played the final 10 minutes without Aleksander Barkov as he left the game after an interference call from Brandon Hangel that ended up with Barkov hitting his head on the ice and being slow to get up. Although the Panthers did not score on the 5-minute power play, they were able to kill a lot of time and get the game close to 0:00. The guys give their three stars of the game, when we knew the game was lost, and prepare for the weekend as the series now shifts to South Florida as Aaron Ekblad will return from his suspension. On today's edition of the Locked On FLORIDA Panthers Podcast, Armando Velez(@Mandoman12) brought in Jacob Winans(@JacobWinans8) for another edition of Winans Wednesday, as the two break down the Panthers' 6-2 win over the Tampa Bay Lightning in Game 1 of the first round. After a tight first period where the game was tied at one, the Panthers went into the second period with a lead, and then the Panthers put the pedal to the medal in the second period, scoring three goals on three consecutive shots, including one on the power play off a failed challenge by the Lightning. Matthew Tkachuk made his return to the lineup for the first time since going down in the Four Nations Face-Off, and was the most noticeable player on the ice, getting two goals and an asisst on the evening. Panthers were living in the blue paint the entirety of the evening, and took the eyes away from Andrei Vasilevskiy, along with getting their chances off deflections with six goals on 16 shots. Nate Schmidt became the second Panthers defenseman to get a multi-goal game in the postseason (Brandon Montour was the other), including the Panthewrs first PPG by a Defenseman this season. Florida was able to also manage the minutes after it was 5-1 where no forwards got up to 20 minutes. Game 82 was a physical one as it was a setup for what's going to happen later this weekend, as with the Toronto Maple Leafs win in Buffalo, the Cats and the Bolts will meet in the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the fourth time in the last five years, where each time, the winner has represented the east in the Stanley Cup Final. On today's edition of the Locked On FLORIDA Panthers Podcast, Armando Velez(@Mandoman12) is here to break down the Panthers' 5-3 loss against the New York Rangers, where the Panthers had a two goal lead with less than five minutes left in the second, and then surrendered four unanswered goals to officially end their chances of getting home-ice in round one of the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Sam Reinhart lit the lamp twice and Carter Verhaeghe is once again a 20-goal scorer after struggling mightily this season. Dmitry Kulikov and Sam Bennett made their returns to the lineup, while the entire Lundell line along with Mackie Samoskevich got the rest on Monday. Lost board battles and losing the puck in the neutral zone had the Rangers getting high quality chances on Sergei Bobrovsky, and the Rangers' fourth line was the line of the night at 5-on-5 crashing the net. Once the Rangers took the lead with a short handed goal, the Panthers had a hard time establishing their games, and even made some decisions in the pursuit of not overtaxing guys as the playoffs are now four days away. Panthers have one regular season game remaining in Tampa Bay, but Tuesday is about coming out unscathed now, especially with Nico Sturm taking a puck to the forearm and being slow to get up towards the end of the game on Monday. On today's edition of the Locked On FLORIDA Panthers Podcast, Armando Velez(@Mandoman12) brought in Jacob Winans(@JacobWinans8) for another edition of Winans Wednesday. The two brea down the Panthers' 3-1 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs to wrap up the season series at 3-1-0. In their fourth and final game, the Panthers were in total control through the 60 minutes, where the Panthers gave the top players from Toronto nothing through the neutral zone. Panthers were able to roll their four lines as the pucks were constantly deep, and had their physical presence felt with 43 hits on the night. Florida had two stretches of nine minutes in the first and third period where they did not allow a shot on net, and played from ahead the whole night. Gustav Forsling got the first goal of the night as he returned to the lineup after missing Sunday's game in Detroit. Florida and Toronto were tied up at one after 40 minutes, but the Panthers were dominant in every category, and it came to fruition just over a minute into the third thanks to Eetu Luostarinen, where the line with him Anton Lundell and Brad Marchand continued to buzz along, including a few short handed chances by Marchand. That led to the Panthers making multiple call-ups from AHL Charlotte, as a ways to get the group healthy before the playoffs start in less than two weeks. On today's edition of the Locked On FLORIDA Panthers Podcast, Armando Velez(@Mandoman12) brought in Jacob Winans(@Jacobwinans8) to the show to break down the Panthers' 3-2 OT loss to Montreal in a game where the Panthers looked like they were on their way to getting two regulation points, only for it to be snatched with just over eight seconds left in the third period and then the Habs ending it under 30 seconds into overtime. Florida was able to control play in the final 40 minutes of the game after losing Nico Sturm in the first period due to friendly fire on a collision with AJ Greer, and even Aleksander Barkov for parts of the second period. Panthers scored on the power play with Barkov in the locker room. The Panthers maintained Montreal's speed with zero odd man rushes against in the first 40 minutes, but one transition play changed everything where the Seth Jones could not deny the entry by rookie phenom Lane Hutson, and then after the puck was thrown toward the net, a block by Sam Reinhart and Vitek Vanecek going to a save, the puck took a strange bounce and Captain Nick Suzuki was found all alone to tap it in and tie it at two. Suzuki also made the Panthers pay in overtime where Vanecek overplayed to his left and was unable to give himself a chance to push off his post to stop the wraparound chance, and it resulted in a season sweep for Montreal over Florida. The Panthers have now fallen even further in the Atlantic Division race, but it's a quick turnaround as they will take their show to Toronto to take on the Leafs. On today's edition of the Locked On FLORIDA Panthers Podcast, Armando Velez(@Mandoman12) brought in Jackson Holzer(@JacksonH_52) to break down the Panthers' 4-2 loss against the Montreal Canadiens, where the Panthers continue to match the Habs' desperation. Three different games, same result. Second consecutive game where they start down with a Power play goal against by Patrik Laine (Montreal on of two PPG's). Panthers responded the first two times, and even controlled play where they held them to four shots on net in the second period. Once the Habs took the lead two minutes into the third, where we would expect the team down to control play, but it was the team leading who did. Montreal was able to beat Florida with speed and being faster to chasing loose pucks, which was summed up when the third goal found the back of the net. The top line for Montreal had multiple players getting multi-point games, along with rookie phenom defenseman, Lane Hutson. Although the Panthers penalty kill had a great month of March, it's twice now in the last three games where their opponent's score more than one power play goal. The Habs were able to get in front of pucks and stop the Panthers from getting quality shots on net, where the middle six was nowhere to be found on the afternoon. On today's edition of the Locked On FLORIDA Panthers Podcast, Armando Velez(@Mandoman12) is here to break down the back-to-back against the Washington Capitals on the road and the Penguins at home. The Cats responded to every punch that Washington threw at them in the first 20 minutes, but failed to do so after the Cap scored two goals in 59 seconds to start the second period, and the game blew open from there as Washington would come out with a win and a sweep of the season series. The Panthers then welcomed Sidney Crosby and the Penguins to down on Sunday, where they were slow coming out of the gate, Pittsburgh outshooting Florida 16-4, but then the Panthers turned it on in the second period, falling down as much as 3-1, Sam Reinhart brought it to a one goal deficit in the second on the power play, and the Panthers only gave up 4 shot attempts in the third where they had Pittsburgh on their heels, eventually it broke with Anton Lundell getting his 16th of the season, and the Panthers found a way to win it in a shootout. Now the Panthers have four days of non-game action, which is a time to rest and recoup. There have been a few bumps, but the Panthers in the month of March are still banking points as they still have a hold on the Atlantic Division lead. On today's edition of the Locked On FLORIDA Panthers Podcast, Armando Velez(@Mandoman12) brought in Nich Fairbanks(@Prudentia0) to break down the Panthers' 1-0 OT win over the Columbus Blue Jackets to sweep the season series. The two teams played a highly contested matchup where both teams got a few close calls, including a goal that was called back due to Boone Jenner kicking the puck into the net. The Barkov line set the tone with their matchup against the Blue Jackets' third line and after winning a bunch of 50/50 battles and getting the puck to the net, it finally paid off in OT. Prior to that, the Blue Jackets went to the box with 30 seconds left in regulation due to a delay of game - puck over glass penalty. Panthers wasted zero time in and got the overtime winner 28 seconds in and the Panthers got the two points to keep pace in the Atlantic Division. Sergei Bobrovsky now has his second shutout of the season against Columbus, and the Panthers have won eight in a row against them, with five of them being shutouts. The two discuss their three stars of the game, when they knew the game was won, and preview the weekend back-to-back where the travel is not in their favor.
