On today's edition of the Locked On FLORIDA Panthers Podcast, Armando Velez(@Mandoman12) brought in Alex Krutchik(@AlexKrutchikFOF) to break down last night's 4-0 Panthers loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning from Sunrise. Game was over after the first 17 minutes where the Lightning got their chances off the rush. The main story of Monday night was a knee-on-knee collision from Nikita Kucherov on Matthew Tkachuk just before the first period ended. Kucherov was assessed a five-minute major and a game misconduct. Tkachuk was able to return to the game 2 minutes into the second period, but that was not the first of the Panthers players getting banged up as Carter Verhaeghe and AJ Greer were hobbled after delivered some hard checks. Niko Mikkola also missed the entirety of the third period on Monday. What mattered was not the final score, but the Cats going into the holiday break with as little injuries as possible as they still lead the division at 22-12-2. On today's edition of the Locked On FLORIDA Panthers Podcast, Armando Velez(@Mandoman12) brought in TJ Peterson(@parallelcircle) of Panther Pourri to the show to break down the Panthers 6-1 win over the Minnesota Wild. Florida set the tone early with getting on the board in the first few minutes of the game, thanks to the Panthers' third line getting the pucks deep and shooting through traffic on future Hall of Famer Marc-Andre Fleury. Mackie Samoskevich got on the scoresheet after the Wild failed to connected on a stretch pass, the Cats countered and Samoskevich picked the corner for his sixth of the season. The Panthers were starting to gain control of the game, and we saw signs even when a goal was disallowed due to offside, Florida had the puck in the Wild end of over a minute, but they would not be denied a few minutes later as Matthew Tkachuk not only scored once, but twice (once on the PP). On today's edition of the Locked On FLORIDA Panthers Podcast, Armando Velez(@Mandoman12) breaks down the Panthers 6-5 win over the Edmonton Oilers in their first meeting since Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final Rematch. The Panthers set the tone early with their special teams getting two goals in the first period, including Jesper Boqvist's first short-handed goal of his career. Now the Panthers have eight on the season. Florida had a bit of adversity in the second giving up three goals in 3:04, which two of the goals against were a bit head scratching. Panthers got the game within one toward the end of the second period, and one big check by Jonah Gadjovich in the in the neutral zone changed the momentum of the hockey game, where the Panthers scored twice in a 30-second span, including an incredible sharp angle shot by Sam Reinhart for his 20th goal of the season. Although Edmonton tied it shortly after, Mr. Clutch Carter Verhaeghe came through just past the midway point of the third period and the Panthers were able to shut down the game from there. The Panthers responded once again after getting shutout in their previous two games, and now are 2-2-0 on their current road trip. This was the Panthers' first win this season when trailing going into the third period, and what timing for it to come in their Stanley Cup Final Rematch. On today's edition of the Locked On FLORIDA Panthers Podcast, Armando Velez(@Mandoman12) brought in Nich Fairbanks(@Prudentia0) to break down the Panthers' 4-0 loss against the Vancouver Canucks for their second straight shutout loss in British Columbia. The Panthers faced a goaltender who has had their number over the years in Kevin Lankinen, but the Panthers did not get goalied on Thursday night. Florida was unable to get second chance opportunities as Vancouver forced a lot of one-and-done's and when the Panthers were caught on bad lines changes/out of position, there was a definite speed advantage. The Canucks also got an emotional boost with JT Miller returning to the lineup after missing the last 10 games (personal reasons), and it quickly manifested just over two minutes into the game. Panthers were playing catch up and even with having the zone time and shot advantage, Lankinen was able to see pucks at ease. The guys give their three duds of the game, when the knew the game was lost, and shift their focus to their matchup against the Calgary Flames on Saturday night as they will be meeting up with another member of the 2024 Championship squad in Ryan Lomberg as he is set to receive his championship ring. On today's edition of the Locked On FLORIDA Panthers Podcast, Armando Velez(@Mandoman12) brought in Jacob Winans(@JacobWinans8) to the show to break down the Panthers' 2-1 shootout win over the Seattle Kraken, where it was controlled played for the Panthers for most of the contest. It took almost two full periods before the Panthers solved Joey Daccord on the night on a sweet one-timer from captain Aleksander Barkov. Seattle played tight in their own end, keeping the Cats to the perimeter and limiting second chance opportunities. Florida was able to defend the Kraken counter attack for most of the evening, but It was once again Head Coach Paul Maurice pulling the right strings that helped shift the momentum with changing up the lines just before the Panthers tied the game. The Head Coach also called a key timeout in the overtime period to help get his stars the needed rest before taking the ice again. Mackie Samoskevich continues to show growth where he started the night on the fourth line, moved his way up to the third, and got key minutes in OT. The Panthers are a week removed from losing in a dominant effort against the Penguins to winning in a dominant effort against Seattle, but the team regardless does not go away from their winning formula in physical hard forechecking style of play. The two break down the Panthers' 7-5 win over the Philadelphia Flyers, where the Panthers were up by as many as three goals, but the Flyers found a way to come back and even take the lead to get up by a goal a third of the way through the third period. On today's edition of the Locked On FLORIDA Panthers Podcast, Armando Velez(@Mandoman12) brought in Jacob Winans(@JacobWinans8) for another edition of Winans Wednesday. The two break down the Panthers' 5-4 OT loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins from the Steel City. After a disallowed goal, the Pens used 1:12 to get two goals on the board. The Panthers controlled play, but failed to deliver more of the net-front opportunities until the third period, until they were already down by three scores. Matthew Tkachuk came alive as he had a four-point game and got to the 600-point mark for his career. Florida had quite a few defensive miscues that cost them a second point and had them playing catch up all night, but used 4:32 in the third period to score three times and tie it at 4, allowing them to force overtime. On today's edition of the Locked On FLORIDA Panthers Podcast, Armando Velez(@Mandoman12) brought in Jacob Langsam(@PTPJacob) of the Panther Pourri Podcast to break down the Panthers' 4-1 loss to the Washington Capitals where the Cats got out to a 1-0 lead 7:00 into the game, but were unable to add on to the scoring. The Capitals were able to prevent the Panthers to cleanly break out of their own end, and gave the Panthers little time and space in the offensive zone. One theme was consistent throughout the evening, missing the net, where with the team being on the skid they're on it now seems as if they're over thinking their shot decisions once they get the puck in their opponents' zone. Spencer Knight got the start and also gave the team a chance to win where it was 2-1 before the Caps scored two empty netters. The game went into the third period with the game tied at one before Washington scored on a 5-on-3 power play, and they went on to play their shutdown defense for the rest of the period where the puck was in the Panthers end quite a bit in the final frame. On today's edition of the Locked On FLORIDA Panthers Podcast, Armando Velez(@Mandoman12) brought in Jacob Winans(@JacobWinans8) for another edition of Winans Wednesday. The two broke down the Panthers' 6-3 loss where they controlled play for a good majority of the first period, but Winnipeg's speed made the Panthers pay in the final 5 minutes of the first to get them into a two-goal deficit, one of them with their inability to break out of their zone. The Cats inability to break out continued on their end on the penalty kill when the Jets scored seconds after the power play ended, as the puck was in the Cats zone for almost the entirety of the man advantage. Florida killed a 5-on-3 early in the second period, and the fourth line gave them a bit of energy going into the third period down two. Panthers special team helped cut the deficit to one on more than one occasion with one of their power plays goals with the extra attacker on. Although they drew a penalty and had an opportunity to tie the game on the power play, the Jets got two empty netters to seal the game and ended any hope of the Panthers getting a single point after being down by as much as three on the road. On today's edition of the Locked On FLORIDA Panthers Podcast, Armando Velez(@Mandoman12) brought in Matt Lichtenstadter(@MattsMusings1) to discuss the Panthers' 5-0 win over the league-leading Winnipeg Jets on Saturday where it was seen as more of a litmus test for Winnipeg than for Florida. The Panthers were the dominant team from the start as it was one of the many times this season where they had woken up following a loss. It came down to the top players leading the way with Aleksander Barkov and Sam Reinhart getting two points each, Gustav Forsling ended the evening with a +4. More importantly, the Panthers were exceptional with disrupting the Jets' breakouts and still were able to continuously throw the kitchen sink at Vezina Trophy favorite, Connor Hellebuyck. Florida had two former Jets Defenseman get in on the scoring in Nate Schmidt and Dmitry Kulikov, and Mackie Samoskevich got his first goal at Amerant Bank Arena. The two discuss how Sergei Bobrovsky delivers in the month of November on a consistent basis, where he got win number 405 on Saturday (and 45th shutout of his career) and how the Panthers will now go on a quick two-game road trip where they have not won in Winnipeg nor Chicago since Paul Maurice took over as coach. Panthers had the pressure on NJ, even having a 5-on-3 at the end of the first period, which they failed to capitalize while they went to the intermission trailing by one. On today's edition of the Locked On FLORIDA Panthers Podcast, Armando Velez(@Mandoman12) brought in Florida Panthers Historian Francisco Oporta(@fjojr and @FLACatsHistory) to recap the Panthers 5-2 win over the Buffalo Sabres in Aleksander Barkov s return to the lineup. Florida got their game going with how well they were able to break out the puck and get in transition, tone was set by the new third line of Luostarinen-Lundell-Boqvist, getting the first goal of the game, and then scoring again less than a minute later on the power play. Buffalo got the game tied with two goals in less than two minutes, but the Florida was able to not allow the Sabres to capitalize more when Sergei Bobrovsky made the save of the game on Owen Power shifting to his right without the goalie stick, and just moments later, Florida took the lead and never surrendered it. Monday night brought lots of nastiness from the two teams, where the referee's let the teams play for the most part, but a lack of composure drew a lot of stick penalties, including a game-changing penalty on defenseman Rasmus Dahlin getting Anton Lundell up high resulting in a double minor (one of them cancelled out with Jesper Boqvist going to the box). Florida was able to capitalize with Dahlin in the box to kill any chance of a comeback. Bobrovsky is now tied for 13th all time in goalie wins, with a chance to crack into the top 10 at seasons end, Sam Bennett is on a five-game goal streak, Verhaeghe with a seven-game point streak, and the Panthers are coming in hot as they will now make the long flight to Finland for the global series. Before they took the ice on Long Island, they along with the Stanley Cup took a trip to West Point. Panthers Owner Vinnie Viola, Matthew Caldwell and other West Point Alumni fulfilled their promise of taking it back to a place that shaped them to share along with the other Army Cadets on their off day. The Panthers continued their road trip on Long Island Saturday night where they went from being down three to scoring six unanswered, where Matthew Tkachuk got his first two goals of the season, and Mackie Samoskevich got his first NHL goal just minutes after he had a chance that rang off the post. The Newtown Connecticut native had family make the two-hour drive to Long Island to see him play, and he delivered. Spencer Knight (Connecticut native) got the secondary assist on the play and was really steady in net after the Panthers gave up three goals in the first 12 minutes. Barkov looks to be one step closer to coming back, and with how the lines have been formed, we may see Samoskevich play alongside Barkov on Monday night. Over the weekend, the Panthers signed 2024 6th round pick Hunter St. Martin to a three year entry-level deal after having an impressive rookie showcase and preseason before heading back to junior hockey in Medicine Hat. On today's edition of the Locked On FLORIDA Panthers Podcast, Armando Velez(@Mandoman12) brought in Florida Panthers Historian Francisco Oporta(@fjojr and @FlaCatsHistory) to the show to break down the Panthers' 3-1 victory over the New York Rangers. The performance from Thursday night felt very reminiscent to their series in the Eastern Conference Final back in May, as the Panthers controlled play, even getting the first goal of the game 44 seconds in. Florida responded less than two minutes later with Carter Verhaeghe getting his first of the season. New York responded just a few minutes later, but that was about it as all four line were able to roll, Sergei Bobrovsky was steady in his net, making a multitude of incredible saves on the penalty kill on Chris Kreider and Vincent Trocheck, and Florida was able to exit their zone cleanly on the night. The two break down the Panthers' 3-2 OT loss against the Vancouver Canucks in their first game of their three-game homestand. It was the battle of the two goaltenders between Kevin Lankinen and Sergei Bobrovsky, but it was Lankinen who got the best of this one as the Panthers never led on the night, but the game never felt out of reach. The Panthers responded 11 seconds after the Canucks scored on a wraparound goal, but a goal of their own off a rebound after a wraparound. The assist from the wraparound attempt got Mackie Samoskevich his first NHL point. Anton Lundell stayed hot as he got a goal on the Panthers only PP of the game. The two also discuss Lundell taking up the big assignments and making the stars look silly. The Panthers had to play this contest with Jonah Gadjovich leaving midway through the first period and Sam Reinhart heading to the locker room after a collision with Jake DeBrusk. Reinhart returned after the Canucks scored to give them a 2-1 lead. This game had three separate video reviews on goals, where two were called good goals, and one called back. The two give their thoughts on the Panthers challenge on the Quinn Hughes goal that stood (and without an explanation from the officials). On today's edition of the Locked On FLORIDA Panthers Podcast, Armando Velez(@Mandoman12) breaks down the Panthers' 4-3 win over the Boston Bruins. Florida came in once again going 11F-7D with Uvis Balinskis taking the fourth line winger spot, and Paul Maurice telling the media that Matthew Tkachuk will be out at least until 10/22. Florida went back to the scene of the crime where they clinched both of their last two postseason series against Boston, and it was your typical matchup of physicality and bad blood between the two teams. After Boston took the early lead, the Panthers responded less than two minutes later when Anton Lundell scored while the teams were 4-on-4 shortly after an offensive zone draw. The game got tense after AJ Greer delivered a hit on David Pastrnak that went uncalled, where the Bruins lost their composure quite a few times (with McAvoy's crosscheck on Verhaeghe and Pastrnak's interference on Reinhart). Panthers were able to convert on the power play five seconds into the man advantage to give the Panthers a 2-1 lead. The Cats extended their lead shortly after the Bruins tied the game while on the kill where Sam Reinhart hugged the half wall, drove it up the ice and retrieved the puck again after the puck became loose, and due to a collision from Matthew Poitras on Jeremy Swayman, Reinhart was able to finish the short handed chance. Now that's three special teams goals against the Bruins this season. Panthers extended their lead when they caught Boston on a change, where Lundell finished on a breakaway to the far side. Boston cut it to one, but the Panthers were able to go into the third period with a lead, and continued to play their shut down style which now brings them to 71-0-4 when leading after 40 minutes (postseason included) since 3/7/2023. On today's edition of the Locked On FLORIDA Panthers Podcast, Armando Velez(@Mandoman12) brought in Nich Fairbanks(@Prudentia0) for another edition of Fairbanks Friday. The two are here to break down the Panthers' 3-1 loss at the hands of the Ottawa Senators. The Sens looked like the more desperate team coming out of the gate as they out skated the Cats in the first 20 minutes with multiple chances off the rush, including 17 shots in the first period. The Panthers buckled down in the second period and beyond spending a bunch of time in the Senators end, but the commitment to shot blocking helped Ottawa deny the Panthers from completing their comeback attempt. There were a lot of great things going for the Panthers after they switched up the top six, until the last 1:10 of the game when the Cats had the extra attacker. During the 6-on-5, Captain Aleksander Barkov broke is stick and chased Tim Stutzle in an attempt to deny him from scoring on the empty net. After the conversion, Stutzle and Barkov collided at the end boards together with Barkov getting the worst of it, sliding feet first. Barkov was slow to get up and put zero weight on his right foot.
