On today's edition of the Locked On FLORIDA Panthers Podcast, Armando Velez(@Mandoman12) brought in Jackson Holzer(@JacksonH_52) to break down the Panthers 2-1 win over the Tampa Bay Lightning. It was a big four-point swing game, and the Panthers new shiny toy in Seth Jones made his Panthers debut on the evening. The Panthers went on the penalty kill seven times, including once in the final minute where there was a close call at the end. Tampa controlled play in the first period, but was unable to get convert after getting multiple power plays. Panthers had jump to their step in the second period, resulting in two goals, both scored by Aleksander Barkov, one of them being on special teams. The Panthers got a huge kill on a double minor towards the end of the second, and although the Bolts got it to a one-goal game early in the third period, it was a tight defensive matchup that one inch could've made turned the game in a different direction, included a Lightning short handed breakaway chance by Bobrovsky and a clear at the netfront by Eetu Luostarinen shortly after the Bolts cut the deficit. On today's edition of the Locked On FLORIDA Panthers Podcast, Armando Velez(@Mandoman12) brought in Nich Fairbanks(@Prudentia0) for another edition of Fairbanks Friday. The two break down the Panthers 4-3 win over the Edmonton Oilers to sweep the season series, where the game was tied in the middle of the third period, right before the Panthers scored the last two to get the two points behind Anton Lundell's three-point performance (1,2). The Panthers never trailed in the game and had six power play opportunities, including two in the final few minutes where the Oilers were creating a bit of a push after cutting the deficit to one and the Panthers were able to put the game away. The Cats set the tone with continuously forcing the Oilers to the outside and maintaining their speed. Florida didn't allow an even strength shot on net for the first 13 minutes of the second period, and Florida was able to remain composed after taking the lead and then immediately surrendering it. They also had another goal taken off the board at the beginning of the game due to an offside, but Carter Verhaeghe was able to still get on the board (which was ultimately the GWG) after fighting off a shot block and following it up with a goal. The two broke down the Panthers' 4-1 win over the Nashville Predators, where it was another game in which the Panthers controlled play. Frustrations for Nashville came together in the first period where the Preds committed three penalties in the first, and five overall in the game, and the Panthers capitalized thanks to the Sam's. Bennett scored his 19th of the season on the power play, his first on the man advantage since late October. Justin Sourdif made his season debut, filling in for Eetu Luostarinen and got on the scoresheet after receiving a return feed off a give-n-go from Jesper Boqvist off the rush. Sam Bennett also had a Gordie Howe Hat trick, with answering the bell in the third period after he was called for a boarding penalty on Roman Josi in the previous period (Josi did not return), and had an assist to Mackie Samoskevich to extend their lead to four. Spencer Knight wasn't busy on the evening, but it was a full circle moment in Nashville based on where he was just a few years ago. The shot on goal differential didn't tell the whole story on how the Panthers lived in the Predators zone throughout the game, and the Cats never panicked when they gave up the one goal off the third chance opportunity. On today's edition of the Locked On FLORIDA Panthers Podcast, Armando Velez(@Mandoman12) brought in Florida Panthers Historian Francisco Oporta (@fjojr and @FLACatsHistory) to the show to break down Canada's 3-2 OT win over the USA in the Four Nations Face-Off Championship. The two discuss the success of the tournament and that it gave hockey fans everything they wanted on a true best-on-best tournament. Canada at times set the pace, and did so early with a goal five minutes into the game where Nathan MacKinnon struck again. USA then would score shortly after juggling their lines, putting Auston Matthews with the Tkachuk brothers. USA then took the lead into the second period thanks to Jake Sanderson, and after a tight third period where the USA was starting to take control, they couldn't capitalize. Jordan Binnington came through in the over time period off a short side shot off a rebound by Brady Tkachuk, and then shortly after, Canada won a draw in the USA zone, where Adam Fox and Auston Matthew went to chase the puck, leaving Connor McDavid wide open in the slot, where his shot got past the glove of Connor Hellebuyck for the Golden goal. McDavid was contained for the most part, but one mistake proved costly for the Americans. On today's edition of the Locked On FLORIDA Panthers Podcast, Armando Velez(@Mandoman12) brought in Calgary Native Kirby Lupul (@KJ_Lups) of the Cats n' Rats Podcast to break down the big day at the Four Nations. The two break down the animosity from the start of puck drop with three fights in nine seconds, where it brought the excitement of what fans have been missing from the lack of international hockey. Canada took the lead after Connor McDavid finished on a breakaway. After that, the USA played a tight game, where they didn't give up a goal the rest of the way, USA took the lead in the second period, and the teams played a tight game from there on. USA with the win advances to the final, and they did so without Panthers star Matthew Tkachuk, who took himself out of the game with just under 13 minutes left in the third period. Finland took on Sweden earlier in the day where Sweden took the early lead after a turnover by Barkov that ended up in the back of their net. Finland took the lead before the end of the first on the power play, and the Swede's made a goaltender change after Filip Gustavsson gave up two goals on four shots. Linus Ullmark took it the rest of the way. Sweden was the most opportunistic bunch as Finland's coontrolled play for the first five minutes, but couldn't capitalize, and Sweden scores two straight. Finland however ended the period on a high note with Aleksander Barkov getting a goal on a tip-in. The third became tight as neither scored, but less than two minutes into overtime, Finland's Mikael Granlund won it in overtime to give Finland a chance to advance with a regulation win on Monday afternoon. The two discuss the scenario's, Tkachuk's availability, and if the Canadian's should stick with Jordan Binnington. On today's edition of the Locked On FLORIDA Panthers Podcast, Armando Velez(@Mandoman12) brought in Nich Fairbanks (@Prudentia0) for another edition of Fairbanks Friday. The two break down USA's 6-1 win over Finland where the American's broke through after Mike Sullivan decided to put Brady and Matthew Tkachuk on the same line. Finland got the first goal of the game, and played a structured game for the first 40 minutes. USA's power play was a struggle, but 5-on-5 play set the tone early on for them. Brady set the tone with his level of physicality, which made it a more physical game than what fans saw for Canada-Sweden on Wednesday. Finland held USA shotless for the first seven minutes of the second period, but a goal by Matt Boldy gave the American's the lead heading into the final frame. Not only did they have a lead, but they were on the power play to start, which they wasted no time lightning the lamp thanks to Matthew Tkachuk. It was one of his two power play goals on the evening, and even had a secondary assist on Brady Tkachuk's second goal of the game. USA scored three times in 2:45 to break the game open, and now are leading the table with three points after every team has completed one game. On today's edition of the Locked On FLORIDA Panthers Podcast, Armando Velez (@Mandoman12) brought in Florida Panthers Historian, Francisco Oporta(@fjojr and @FLACatsHistory) to break down Canada's 4-3 OT win in night one of the Four Nations Face-Off. Canada was energized off the pregame introductions when Mario Lemieux was part of it, scoring on the power play less than a minute in. Sweden struggled in the first 15 minutes of the game where they had a hard time getting their cycle going. Things settled down in the second period as they were able to eliminate Canada's speed, allowing them to cut it to one, and doing so again in the third period to force overtime. Canada then gained full control back with the open ice three-on-three, with Sidney Crosby dropping the puck off to Mitch Marner, who came up the gut with speed to beat Filip Gustavsson past the blocker to give the Canadians the two points. Crosby had three points on the night, including the early goal to Nathan MacKinnon. Canada went the rest of the way with five defenseman after Shea Theodore went to the locker room after getting hit on the boards by Adrian Kempe. How did the two Panthers who played in this game fair? NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman announced that the World Cup of Hockey is coming back, and the hockey continues on Thursday as the USA takes on Finland in night two. On today's edition of the Locked On FLORIDA Panthers Podcast, Armando Velez(@Mandoman12) is here to break down the Panthers' 5-1 win over the Ottawa Senators, in the final game before the Four Nations break. Panthers came even waves and it did not stop even when they gave up an early goal to Brady Tkachuk on the power play. Matthew Tkachuk answered with one of his own in the second period, and the Panthers poured it on from there, with 20 shots in the period. It allowed the Panthers to get a smooth third period that had very few whistles. Panthers capped it off with an empty netter while short handed (now 12 SHG's on the season), and they go into the break at 34-20-3 and three points ahead of the Leafs for the Atlantic Division. On today's edition of the Locked On FLORIDA Panthers Podcast, Armando Velez(@Mandoman12) brought in Nich Fairbanks(@prudentia0) for another edition of Fairbanks Friday. The two discuss the Panthers' 3-2 win over the Blues as Matthew Tkachuk scored with 11.8 seconds lefts after the Panthers didn't allow a shot for over 15 minutes in the third period. The Panthers had the energy after Sam Bennett and Jake Neighbours dropped the gloves right off the opening draw after Bennett's shot to the head back in December. The Cats' second line set the tone in the first period with getting a goal off the forecheck, with Mackie Samoskevich scoring after missing the last three games with an illness. He later exited the game after his first shift in the second period, and did not return. The Panthers had an early stretch in the game where they had 10 consecutive shots after giving up the first goal. St. Louis slowed the Panthers down in the second period and the first 10 minutes of the third where the Cats had a hard time gaining the zone, but things started to turn around after, and the Panthers had a multitude of chances off the rush, eventually resulting in their last second goal. Tkachuk now has six goals in his last five games, and 13 points (7,6) in his last seven games. The Panthers even out the road trip right before returning home to play the Ottawa Senators. On today's edition of the Locked On FLORIDA Panthers Podcast, Armando Velez(@Mandoman12) is here to break down the Panthers' 6-3 loss to the Washington Capitals, where both teams traded goals in the first two periods, but the Panthers kept playing to their identity despite never having a lead on the evening. Including allowing three shots the first 13 minutes of the second period, which could have been a point where the Cats' could have turned the game around. The Caps scored twice in the first six minutes of the third period, but after a bump from Nic Dowd on Sergei Bobrovsky (which wasn't the first time he crashed into Florida's goaltender), the Cats scored with the open ice on 4-on-4 to bring it to a one-goal deficit thanks to Matthew Tkachuk. Chucky now has a four-game goal streak. Washington scored two empty netters to seal the victory, including Alexander Ovechkin's 878th goal, which now puts him to 17 goals away from breaking Wayne Gretzky's goal record. Panthers set the tone with winning draws on the penalty kill and not giving Washington time in their the Panthers' zone. Although the Panthers were supporting the defense well in their own end, there were multiple occasions where were getting behind the Panthers defense and got their breakaway opportunities, which ended up biting them on the night. On today's edition of the Locked On FLORIDA Panthers Podcast, Armando Velez(@Mandoman12) brought in David Dwork(@DavidDwork) to the show to discuss the weekend sweep against the Chicago Blackhawks and the New York Islanders right before hitting the road for a quick two-game road trip. The stars came to play, and the key for the Panthers was first period dominance, with the exception of the first seven seconds of their game against Chicago. Jonah Gadjovich stayed ready and scored to tie the game in the first game, Dmitry Kulikov received the silver stick in honor of playing 1000 games, and Carter Verhaeghe broke out with four goals on 12 shots over the weekend, including his third hat trick as a member of the Panthers. Sam Reinhart became the first Panthers to hit 30 goals in four straight seasons, and tied Pavel Bure with 152 goals in a Cats sweater. Panthers got a bit of a scare in the second period against the Islanders where they allowed three unanswered goals, which was the second time it happened against them this season, but like the first matchup, the Panthers responded with multiple putting the clamps down against a team who came into the game winners of seven in a row, but dealing with loads of injuries, and a goaltender playing in his first NHL game. On today's edition of the Locked On FLORIDA Panthers Podcast, Armando Velez(@Mandoman12) is here to break down the Panthers' 4-1 loss to the Vegas Golden Knights from the Fortress. The Cats on the second end of their back-to-back controlled play for the start and end of the first period, and carried it over to the second. However, VGK extended their lead to two after their second shot on goal of the period that made it hard to come back from. After some lines changes in the second period, the Panthers were able to cut it to one in the opening minutes of the third period to still make a game out of it. Vegas scored just past the midway points of the third period, and would remain in control for the remainder of the contest. Spencer Knight kept the Cats in it after two consecutive breakaway stops, but an untimely penalty with five minutes left in the frame put the game out of reach. The Cats will now only play two games outside of the eastern time zone out of their remaining 31, with a chance to still get to the top of the Atlantic. On today's edition of the Locked On FLORIDA Panthers Podcast, Armando Velez(@Mandoman12) brought in Eddie Garcia(@eddieonfox) of Locked On LA Kings to break down the Panthers 2-1 loss to the Los Angeles Kings. The Kings were in control in the first period where the Panthers got into early penalty trouble, but once again, staying out of the box the rest of the game gave them an opportunity to play a tight hockey game. The Panthers prevented the Kings from getting to the dirty area in the first 40 minutes. Although the Panthers broke their four-game drought of not scoring on the power play, it was the only scoring that they got on the night against the NHL's best defensive team. LA controlled the play having 13 straight shots on goal, which ended up in two goals to completely flip the game and give the Panthers their fifth straight loss in Los Angeles. It was a special teams demolition for the Detroit Red Wings as they were able to convert on of their four chances, which all happened just after the midway point of the second period. On today's edition of the Locked On FLORIDA Panthers Podcast, Armando Velez(@Mandoman12) brought in Jacob Winans for another edition of Winans Wednesday. The two break down the Panthers' 2-1 shootout win over the New Jersey Devils from the Prudential Center on Tuesday night. A scoreless game through the first 40 minutes where the Panthers took care of the NZ. Although the Panthers struggled to get to the net front, they were still able to generate plenty of speed on the night. Paul Maurice juggled the lines, but quickly put Jesper Boqvist back with Anton Lundell, and it paid off getting the first goal of the game 41 seconds into the third period. Although New Jersey scored less than two minutes later, the game picked up when Matthew Tkachuk placed a hit on Nico Hischer (which resulted in a Devils PP). Spencer Knight came up big on the evening, saving 26/27, while also stopping Jack Hughes and Jesper Bratt in the shootout, while Aleksander Barkov and Anton Lundell scored some beauties. On today's edition of the Locked On FLORIDA Panthers Podcast, Armando Velez(@Mandoman12) broke down the Panthers' 4-3 loss to the Flyers, where the Cats went into the second period with a two-goal lead. Flyers tilted the ice in the second period and slowly but surely, it ended up in the lead evaporating. Philadelphia took away the Panthers time and space, and play around the crease was not at their best, as the majority of the scoring came up the Flyers getting to the net front. On today's edition of the Locked On FLORIDA Panthers Podcast, Armando Velez(@Mandoman12) is here to break down Saturday's 4-3 loss for the Panthers against the Boston Bruins at home. The Cats outshot Boston by more than double, but Jeremy Swayman backstopped the Bruins to a win. Although the Cats gave up two goals on the PK, they went three straight kills without allowing a shot, they limited the breakaway chances, and although they never had a lead, they consistently pushed and had Boston on their heels, even going into the final frame. It manifested in a goal by Sam Reinhart with less than 2 seconds less in regulation to give the Panthers a point, the Cats did have force over time, but due to a penalty taken, the Bruins went on the power play and converted to get the extra point on a block that ended up in the back of their net. The Cats now shift their focus to the Flyers for the third and final matchup of the season, where it'll begin a stretch of eight games in 14 nights. On today's edition of the Locked On FLORIDA Panthers Podcast, Armando Velez(@Mandoman12) brought in Jackson Holzer(@JacksonH_52) to the show to break down the Panthers' 4-1 win over the Utah Hockey Club. The Panthers reunited with Kevin Stenlund the night before as he got his Stanley Cup ring. As far as the game went, the Cats played a controlled game as they started to get it going after a TV timeout in which Paul Maurice probably had the quote of the season. Utah had 17 shots in the second period, but we did not consider many of their chances in the high quality category, and another Panther broke out of their goal drought, Wednesday night was Sam Reinhart's turn. With his PPG in the second period, he is now second in franchise history with 67. The Cats scored early in the third period to separate themselves as Jesper Boqvist gave the Panthers the lead after Utah looked a bit lost in their own end after a broken stick. Florida added two ENG's (one of them by Boqvist) to put the game away. The two give their three stars of the game, and when they knew the game was won. On today's edition of the Locked On FLORIDA Panthers Podcast, Armando Velez(@Mandoman12) brought in the two co-hosts of Locked On Avalanche, Kyle Sullivan (@ShaggyVonDoom) and Chris Micieli(@C__micieli) to break down the Avs' 3-1 win over the Panthers. The Cats were without Aaron Ekblad after leaving Friday's game in the middle of the third period. Florida was pinned in their own end, but did not allow the Avalanche to generate off the rush. On today's edition of the Locked On FLORIDA Panthers Podcast, Armando Velez(@Mandoman12) brought in Nich Fairbanks(@prudentia0) for another edition of Fairbanks Friday. The two break down the Panthers 3-1 loss to Carolina. The Cats were slow coming out of the gate after the Hurricanes scored on their first shift. The Cats were outshot at one point 13-1, and Paul Maurice in the middle of a TV timeout ripped into his team. AJ Greer also provided a bit of honesty during an intermission interview on the teams play in the first period. The Panthers were able to tie the game in the second period thanks to Anton Lundell off the Panthers getting it in deep and supporting the forechecker. Florida was starting to control play, and then it deflated like a balloon after Jaccob Slavin scored with the Canes crashing the net, and Sergei Bobrovsky a bit frozen after making a stop on the first shot on net before the Canes took the lead. Goalie interference? The guys provide their three duds of the game, when they knew the game was lost, and preview Friday night's game against the Pittsburgh Penguins. On today's edition of the Locked On FLORIDA Panthers Podcast, Armando Velez(@Mandoman12) broke down the Panthers' win over the New York Rangers 5-3, which was another response by the team after a lackluster performance in the previous game against Montreal. The Panthers scored their goals in similar ways on Monday night where it was the Rangers inability to clear the puck and getting traffic around Igor Shesterkin to create off second chances. It was the second straight game without Niko Mikkola, and the forward lines were shifted as Eetu Luostarinen was placed on Sam Bennett's line and Carter Verhaeghe was on Anton Lundell's wing. The gamble by Paul Maurice sparked the Cats offense on the evening early on. Although had multiple leads, they never found themselves trailing on Monday night as Jesper Boqvist scored two go-ahead goals, including the game winner that was assisted by his brother Adam Boqvist.
