Bentu Luna is the name of the estate which is situated in Neonelli and is the brain child of Gabriele Moratti (owner of Castello di Cigognola estate in Oltrepò Pavese). It is managed by CEO Gian Matteo Baldi. Its story is not just one of regenerating vineyards. Beyond that, it also looks to the tradition of community and viticulture in rural Sardegna. A tradition in which each family becomes a stakeholder in the communal vineyard. This 1200-hectare vineyard project is planted to a mix of indigenous varieties that include percentages of Bovale sardo, Cannonau, Monica, Pascale, Cagnulari, Carignano, Vermentino and Barbera. Jamie attained his Australian Sommelier qualifications at 17 and worked during his last two years of high school as majordomo on an island resort in the Whitsunday Passage. After graduating from college, he traveled to Japan where he earned a BA in Economics from Tokyo National University and accreditation from the Japan Sommelier Society. After successfully developing two 12,000 selection wine cellars for Maxim’s & Sabatini Restaurants of Tokyo, Jamie was offered a position by Ambassador Walter Mondale to the United States Embassy as Food & Wine Director at The New Sanno Hotel, a unique hotel designed for military travelers and operated by the US Naval Joint Services. At New Sanno, Jamie was responsible for the beverage program for their five restaurants. In 1993, Jamie moved to Paris and undertook an internship with Michelin Chef Guy Savoy, who then sponsored him into the British Court of Masters Sommelier in 1994. In 1995, Jamie moved to St. Petersburg Russia where he studied Political Science at the University of St. Petersburg and worked as wine steward at Le Paris Restaurant in Ulitsa. He attained Sommelier accreditation from the St. Petersburg chapter, Russian Sommelier Association. In 1996, Jamie moved to New York City when he was accepted to Columbia University. He began working for Chef Jean-George Vongerichten and quickly established himself as one of the most respected Sommeliers in New York. In the decade following, he successfully managed the wine programs at several New York "institution" restaurants, such as Cello, Babbo, Daniel, La Bernadin, Ilo, & Oceana. In 2005, he was offered a joint Educational & Marketing position with Fosters Wine Estates as Director of the Estates Wine Group, providing him an opportunity to work with some of the world’s finest wine brands. In 2009 when his first son was born, Jamie retired from corporate life and started his own consulting company, Vine Consultants, managing Cantine Ferrari and Planeta. Today, Jamie serves as Brand Ambassador for Ferrari, where he oversees all brand activities, public relations, marketing development and distributor relations in the US. In 2003 she won the Oscar for the best Italian producer awarded by AIS BIbenda and published the “Manuale del turismo del vino” followed in 2007 by “Marketing del turismo del vino”. Mr. Castaldo was promoted to Regional Manager of New Jersey and New York in 1997. In 2002, Mr. Castaldo was promoted to Senior Vice President of Imports at Winebow, in which he oversaw supplier relationships and contract negotiations for import portfolios. In 2014, with the merger of Winebow and The Vintner Group, Mr. Castaldo became Senior Vice President, Portfolio Management of Leonardo LoCascio Selections, one of the three national import business units of the newly formed The Winebow Group. In 2015, Mr. Castaldo was inducted into the Italian Trade Commission’s Wines of Italy Hall of Fame, which honors professionals in the wine industry who have “demonstrated a commitment to advancing the understanding, appreciation and sales of Italian wines in the United States.” In November 2017, Nunzio resigned from The Winebow Group after 31 years with the organization to launch his own project which was finalized with his acquisition of Panebianco Wines Import, a longstanding importer and distributer of fine Italian Wines in the U.S. Market for over 23 years. In a region often associated with Marsala and with producing bulk quantities of full-fleshed, plummy and ripe reds made for export and blending, Arianna Occhipinti’s wines are non-conformist and highly atypical for the region. Her wines (made from the indigenous grapes Nero d’Avola and the little-known Frappato) reflect, in part, her character: mysterious, earthy and intriguing. The wines are perfumed and spicy, with a bit of a wild streak that mirrors the rebellious energy that bubbles beneath her reserved and somewhat wary exterior. More about Massimiliano Brambilla: He is the owner of Vigne Olcru; a very charismatic man who was the CEO and Vice President of a large electronics and electrical engineering corporation that was listed on the Milan Stock Exchange, with 24 plants in 18 countries, 2000 employees - but truly he’s a very passionate soul who has now dedicated his life along with his brother to working with universities and putting effort into researching pinot noir clones, farming methods, satellite technology and even neuroscientific experiments on wine drinkers! Co-Moderator -Paul Bologna IWA Paul is a native to Southern California and a graduate of UCLA with a degree in Economics and began his wine career working in Napa Valley and then started a long fruitful career working as a sommelier for the JW Marriott and the Ritz-Carlton resort brands. Paul has had many wine experiences in Italy from working in production to taking UC Davis students on tours to wine estates.
