S5 Ep 821Ep. 821 Sarah Bray Interviews Giuseppe Tornatore | Lux Portfolio Series On Clubhouse | Maze Row Wine Merchant
Welcome to episode 821, the second in our new 7-part series with our fantastic partner LUX Wines. We are proud to present this series of interviews, diving deep into the heritage and legacy of their excellent Italian producers, in the run up to the launch of the new brand identity for their importer, which will be shared on March 16 in an episode with Marilisa Allegrini. Tune in every Saturday from 5 March through 16 April as we take an intimate look at these highly esteemed, historic producers and their role as part of the Lux family of wines. This episode is an interview with Sicilian winemaker Giuseppe Tornatore and Sarah Bray, selected by LUX Wine Portfolio as moderator for 3 episodes of the series. The Tornatore family have been growing grapes on the slopes of Mt. Etna in Sicily since 1865. Deep ties to Castiglione di Sicilia were developed when Giuseppe’s grandfather and uncle worked closely with the local government to define vineyard boundaries and names of local districts. The winery lies on the northern side of the volcano, benefitting from the rich soil where lava, ash and lapilli stones have slowly disintegrated over time. The climate is mild and allows for late maturation of the grapes, assisted by altitudes ranging from 500-700 meters above sea level and strong thermal excursions. Tornatore produces high quality wines from their 60 acres of vineyards, one of the largest in the Etna DOC production zone. The vineyards have been recently restructured to improve quality and exalt the territory, with traditional high planting density and precise use of exclusively native varietals. Harvest is all by hand, maintaining high standards of quality and respect for tradition. Wines are aged in cellars insulated with local basalt rock underneath the winery. Wines include red, white, rosé and sparkling, all classified Etna DOC. Tornatore focuses on low environmental impact, with renewable energy sources. The wines are highly recognized, including the December 2021 award of 95 points by James Suckling for Etna Bianco Zottorinotto 2019. S5 Ep 812Ep. 812 Bernardino Sani | On The Road With Stevie Kim
Welcome to episode 812, the first in our new 7-part series with our fantastic partner, LUX Wines. We are proud to present this series of interviews, diving deep into the heritage and legacy of their excellent Italian producers, in the run up to the launch of the new brand identity for their importer, which will be shared on March 16 in an episode with Marilisa Allegrini. Tune in every Saturday from 5 March through 16 April as we take an intimate look at these highly esteemed, historic producers and their role as part of the Gallo family of luxury wines. This first episode is with Bernardino Sani of Argiano in Tuscany, where Stevie Kim travelled to meet him, visit the winery and taste the wines. More about Argiano Winery: Argiano represents five centuries of excellence in Montalcino. CEO and winemaker Bernardino Sani is rooted in this territory and he worked his first internship in the Argiano cellar, after receiving his viticulture and winemaking degree in 2002. Today his passion also encompasses the need for sustainable winemaking. With an unwavering respect for nature and tradition, Argiano produces highly acclaimed wines that speak eloquently of their terroir. With 120 hectares at over 300 meters above sea level, the nearby sea breezes gently cool the aptly named historic Villa Bell’Aria. In 1967 Argiano made history with the Brunello of Montalcino, playing a key role as a founding organization in the birth of the Consortium, and later created the famous Solegno, Montepulciano’s “Super Tuscan.” Argiano was the first company in Montalcino to become plastic-free, in 2019. All single-use plastics have been eliminated. The idea was inspired a desire to maintain the 4 Rs for the environment: Reduce, Recuperate, Recycle and Reuse. Under Sani’s care, Argiano practices organic and sustainable agriculture. Natural insecticides are banned and biodiversity is nurtured. In the cellar, Bernardino has eliminated the use of barriques for the aging of Sangiovese in an effort to more clearly represent the terroir of Argiano. All these decisions: organics, holistic viticultural adjustments, and changes to less invasive winemaking philosophy means that Argiano is currently making the best wines of their storied history. Sani says, “We believe that the vine should not be designed to our liking but should be studied, understood, interpreted, and respected; we believe that it shouldn’t be manipulated, but allowed to express itself, to define a place, a climate, a harvest. This is what Good Agriculture means to us. I have always loved the beauty of the countryside, the vineyards, the history, and the amazing wines produced here. For someone like me who is born in Tuscany, Argiano offers all the things we embrace.” To learn more about Argiano visit: www.argiano.net/en/ To learn more about Gallo and the rich heritage of the Luxury Portfolio, visit: www.luxwines.com/ More about the host Stevie Kim: Stevie hosts Clubhouse sessions each week (visit Italian Wine Club & Wine Business on Clubhouse), these recorded sessions are then released on the podcast to immortalize them! S5 Ep 794Ep. 794 Elena Fucci Pt. 2 | On The Road With Stevie Kim
Welcome to episode 794, another on the Road Edition With Stevie Kim, Join her as she continues her visit to Elena Fucci’s winery in Basilicata. Learn more about Elena Fucci: “Our winery was founded in 2000 at a time when our family was discussing whether to sell the beautiful vineyards surrounding the house where I grew up. The vineyards were purchased in the 60’s by my grandfather Generoso, who chose to buy the highest part of the vineyard in Contrada Solagna of Titolo at the foot of Mount Vulture (an extinct volcano). Over the years that followed my grandfather and great-grandfather took care of the vineyards, selling the grapes after harvest and keeping just enough to produce some wine for personal consumption. Our first thought was that “six hectares of land are too much to keep for fun” thus we decided to sell the land, also in consideration of the fact that my parents are teachers and both me and my siblings felt our future studies at the University would take us far from our home town of Barile. Interested buyers knocking at our door were numerous, but at the last moment I took a shot to the heart. I could not bear the idea that someone may take away from our family the vineyard that I grew up in (our house is located right in the middle of the vineyard) or accept the possibility that another name may do something great with the oldest vineyards on Mount Vulture; the majority of which are 55-60 years old, while some were planted over 70 years ago. Thus, I completely changed the plans I had for my future and my family and I decided to invest in our area and in the resource that allowed my father, and before him, my grandparents and great-grandparents to live and grow in Vulture. It may seem like a story written by a novelist, but when I confided to my parents the idea I had and my intention to study enology at the University they were immediately delighted and willing to lend a hand. Especially my father, who seemed to harbor this dream for some time. In fact, I found him to be well versed in agronomy and everything else that would be needed to start this new venture. The winery came to life with the 2000 vintage concurrently with my studies at the Faculty of Viticulture and Enology. Initially, we were assisted by an external consultant, while in 2004 all facets of the winery were taken over in first person. The choice from the beginning, without any regret, was to stake everything on a single label, the "TITOLO" envisioning it as a high quality, first class wine or "cru". A unique wine for objective reasons related to the yields of the vineyards and the quality of the vines, considering their age. A unique wine to best represent the characteristics of the Aglianico grape and the territory of the Vulture, where the particular mix of microclimate and terroir transmits to our wine one of the best and most unique expressions of this fabulous area that is Contrada Solagna del Titolo. S5 Ep 788Ep. 788 Enrica Fontana | Wine, Food & Travel With Marc Millon
Episode 788 Marc Millon interviews Enrica Fontana from Spagnol Winery, in this episode of Italian Food & Wine with Marc Millon on the Italian Wine Podcast. About the winery: It all began with the cultivation of vines undertaken by great-grandfather Serafino during the early 1900s. Our history continues with the production and marketing of bulk wine until 1986, the year during which we began bottling wines in our cantina, thereby covering all phases of wine making from the production to the sale of bottles, thereby completely the supply chain. The vineyards have always been managed and worked by our nuclear family: father Orazio, mother Loreta and their sons, Stefano, Marco, Alberto and Mattia. More specifically, Orazio and Alberto, together with a team of agronomists, supervise the agricultural activities, all done manually, from the management of the plants to the harvest; while Stefano and Marco, as oenologists, deal with the wine-making process of the company wine cellars. Over time, the “famiglia” has grown to embrace the arrival of talented collaborators, who work in the vineyards (7 individuals), and in our offices (4 individuals). Our business is more than just a trade, it’s our passion and our family tradition. S5 Ep 784Ep. 784 SOS Special | #everbodyneedsabitofscienza
Welcome to episode 784 SOS Special of #everybodyneedsabitofscienza Stevie Kim chats with Richard Hough about the Professore’s new book, in our special SOS #everybodyneedsabitofscienza installment - this is a shout out to all the wine geeks out there - we need some feedback on the Professore's book, the English version of "Jumbo Shrimp guide to the origins, evolution and future of the grapevine" - The Italian Wine Podcast is part of the Mamma Jumbo Shrimp brand, and Mamma Jumbo Shrimp is all about breaking down difficult concepts into small bite size pieces... the issue here is that Professore Scienza's new book is well... a bit difficult to chew at this point, so we want to invite wine lovers out there to give us their input and advice, to make the final product more reader friendly. So have at it wine lovers, don't be shy! send your comments to @itawinepodcast on insta or [email protected] If you want to learn more about the Professore: The one who checks all the facts and regulates when we mistakenly type "Verdicchio" in place of "Vermentino.” Attilio Scienza is a full professor at the University of Milan in the Department of Agricultural and Food Sciences where he teaches courses on genetic improvements to the vine; he also teaches Viticulture in the Master’s program of the University of Turin in Asti. He has been the lead for many national research projects in the field of physiology, agricultural techniques, and vine genetics. As the author of over 350 publications on vine and viticulture in national and international journals, you can bet he knows his stuff!
