Welcome to episode 867, the last in our new 7-part series with our fantastic partners, LUX Wines and Maze Row Wine Merchant. We are proud to present this series of interviews, diving deep into the heritage and legacy of their excellent Italian producers, celebrating the launch of the new brand identity for their importer, Maze Row Wine Merchant. This episode has John Irwin interviewing Bernardino Sani of the Argiano Winery. More about Argiano Winery: Argiano represents five centuries of excellence in Montalcino. CEO and winemaker Bernardino Sani is rooted in this territory and he worked his first internship in the Argiano cellar, after receiving his viticulture and winemaking degree in 2002. Today his passion also encompasses the need for sustainable winemaking. With an unwavering respect for nature and tradition, Argiano produces highly acclaimed wines that speak eloquently of their terroir. With 120 hectares at over 300 meters above sea level, the nearby sea breezes gently cool the aptly named historic Villa Bell’Aria. In 1967 Argiano made history with the Brunello of Montalcino, playing a key role as a founding organization in the birth of the Consortium, and later created the famous Solegno, Montepulciano’s “Super Tuscan.” Argiano was the first company in Montalcino to become plastic-free, in 2019. All single-use plastics have been eliminated. The idea was inspired by desire to maintain the 4 Rs for the environment: Reduce, Recuperate, Recycle and Reuse. Under Sani’s care, Argiano practices organic and sustainable agriculture. Natural insecticides are banned and biodiversity is nurtured. In the cellar, Bernardino has eliminated the use of barriques for the aging of Sangiovese in an effort to more clearly represent the terroir of Argiano. All these decisions: organics, holistic viticultural adjustments, and changes to less invasive winemaking philosophy means that Argiano is currently making the best wines of their storied history. Sani says, “We believe that the vine should not be designed to our liking but should be studied, understood, interpreted, and respected; we believe that it shouldn’t be manipulated, but allowed to express itself, to define a place, a climate, a harvest. This is what Good Agriculture means to us. I have always loved the beauty of the countryside, the vineyards, the history, and the amazing wines produced here. Over the course of 30+ vintages, Pietro has not only proven himself an exemplary vintner, but an incredible ambassador for the region, and more specifically the commune of La Morra. Pietro served two terms as the President of the Consorzio di Tutela Barolo Barbaresco Alba Langhe e Dogliani. It was during one of his terms in 2010 when he oversaw the completion of the official map of Barolo’s MGAs, formally cementing the legendary map his father began drawing in 1965. One of Pietro’s most significant achievements was building a new cantina atop a small hill in Annunziata, a short distance from the original cellars used by his father. More about Andrea Pieropan Born in 1978, Dario Pieropan is the second son of Leonildo Pieropan and Teresita Molinarolo. At the age of 19, he earned his diploma from the Istituto Tecnico Agrario Statale (ITAS), an agricultural high school in Lonigo. In 2004, he earned his degree in viticulture and enology from the University of Udine. Episode 843 Cynthia Chaplin interviews Theodora Lee of Theopolis Vineyard, in this new installment of Voices, on the Italian Wine Podcast. More about today’s guest: Ms. Theodora Lee, a San Francisco law firm senior partner and trial lawyer, is the founder and owner of Theopolis Vineyards. Her passion for wine began upon her arrival to San Francisco from Texas in 1987, primarily due to the influence of her law firm mentors, many of whom owned vineyards. This led Ms. Lee to take several viticulture classes at UC Davis, before deciding to develop her own vineyard. In 2001, Ms. Lee purchased sheep land in the Yorkville Highlands of Anderson Valley, and began developing her vineyard. Finally, in 2003, Ms. Lee planted her vineyard, and adopted her Greek name, from pledging Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, and established Theopolis Vineyards. In the wine world, Ms. Lee is known as Theo-patra, Queen of the Vineyards. Wine Critic Robert Parker bestowed upon wine made from grapes harvested from Theopolis Vineyards a stellar rating of 94-96 points, a spectacular showing for the vintner's first harvest in 2006. Emboldened by the great fruit produced by the land, Ms. Lee, a bold and dynamic Texan, decided to bottle her own wines in 2014. In addition to bottling the richly intense and flavorful Petite Sirah, Theopolis Vineyards strikes a lighter note by bottling a Symphony, a white wine grape, which is a crossing of Muscat and Grenache Gris. Ms. Lee also bottles the unique Rosé of Petite Sirah, an Anderson Valley Pinot Noir, a Yorkville Highlands Pinot Noir, and a Santa Lucia Highlands Pinot Noir. Sales to consumers can now take place, on-premise (HoReCa), off-premise (retail) and “e-premise.” Producers need to understand the structures of the various tools and platforms supporting e-commerce as it is now being conducted in the U.S. And further, you’ll learn about ways to use these new tools to get past the roadblocks and complications that commonly occur going through a traditional agency-brand importer model. One of the fundamental factors in understanding the E-comm wine universe in the U.S. is “who owns the relationship data?” In the case of third-party facilitators such as Drizly, they do. In the case of services such as CityHive and similar retailer direct-to-consumer solutions, it’s the retail store. We’ll discuss why this matters and how the difference can be leveraged to drive sales of your brand. We’ll also parse out distinctions that differentiate the component tools and strategies of E-commerce.
