More about Denise: "I’m Denise Marrone, one of the three Marrone sisters and we have been taking care of the Agricola Marrone since…ever. My two sisters and I make it a lifestyle. We are now the 4th generation of winemaking, focused on quality rather than quantity. Of course we also involve our parents in our activities – their lives have been here among the cellar walls and our beautiful hills for so many years. Valentina, the oenologist, is the mother of the wines, and she carefully follows production and vineyard activities - fundamental for the quality of our wines; Serena is in charge of administration and finance, and she follows the larger, fairer markets; I’m the multitasker, working on social media, dealing with the customer care aspect as well as the "Direct to Customer" sales, the German-speaking markets, winery tours (I’m the guide!), weddings (I’m also a wedding planner). In normal years we would usually have 15.000 visitors per year, something that gives us an immense about of satisfaction and pleasure. S4 Ep 580Ep. 580 Pierpaolo Guerra | Monty Waldin
Episode 580 Monty Waldin Interviews Pierpaolo Guerra Pierpaolo Guerra is the Export Manager at Tenuta di Capezzana. In this interview he shares some of the fantastic history and wines this Winery has to offer. The Family at Tenuta di Capezzana In the twenties, Count Alessandro Contini Bonacossi with his wife Vittoria bought the property of Capezzana, then enlarged with the purchase by the Marquis Aman Niccolini, of two neighboring farms, “Il Poggetto” and “Trefiano”. Thus was born the Tenuta di Capezzana, divided into 3 farms and more than 120 farms, dedicated to the production of high quality wine and oil. Alessandro's passion for collecting led him to preserve bottles, so that today Capezzana can boast a collection of historic vintages starting from 1925. In 1945, Augusto Alessandro, son of Alessandro, was joined by his son Ugo, a veteran of the war and a graduate in agriculture, which gradually took over the management of the estate, transforming it from a sharecropping management to a modern company. Ugo, a man of other times but with broad views, he exploited the enthusiasm and passion of his children, leaving each of them to run a business. A perfect combination between Ugo's experience and the novelty of the fourth generation. The first of the children to work alongside their father was Vittorio, who at the age of eighteen took charge of the all-round management of the company, eventually becoming the manager of the campaign and the winemaker, devoting himself particularly to the transformation towards organic. Today Capezzana is managed by a collaboration between the fourth and fifth generation. Beatrice is the sales manager, flanked by her sister Benedetta, the winemaker, and her brother Filippo, who is responsible for the production of oil and the financial part. The fifth generation has already begun to follow the family tradition, and today they work in the company Serena, responsible for hospitality, The History: In Carmignano the vine was already cultivated in the pre-Roman era, about 3000 years ago, as demonstrated by the wine jars and tasting cups found in the Etruscan tombs. A parchment dated 804 was found in the state archive of Florence: it is a rental contract that documents how olive trees and vines were cultivated in Capezzana 1200 years ago for the production of oil and wine. In the early Renaissance, a woman, Monna Nera Bonaccorsi, built the first “casa da Signori” and nine farm houses with the relative vine-growing systems; it was 1475. Other generations and families took turns on the property of the estate: the Cantucci, related to the Medici, and the Bourbon del Monte Marquises. In the eighteenth century a married Cantucci Bourbon enlarged the farm and bought new farms; he also introduced an exemplary administrative method, the documents of which are still preserved today in the company's historical archive. After the Bourbon del Monte, the company passed to the Adimari Morelli and then to the Franchetti Rothschilds and, by the widow Sara de Rothschild, and then to the Contini Bonacossi, our family, in 1920. Episode 575 - Monty Waldin talks to Matthias Oertel About Matthias: Biodynamic wine farm Tenuta del Fontino is more than just a producer of natural wines. It's a family-owned winery focusing on autochthonous grape varieties with a fundamental goal: producing fresh, honest and consistent wines according to the Demeter principles. "From the vine to the glass" – that´s Matthias' vision. "My name is Matthias Oertel, I am 26 years old and obtained a law degree in 2020. I was able to gain experience in the tourism industry at a young age since my family is running a hotel. This is where I got into the wine sector and I am seeing big potential in the future of wine tourism in the Maremma area. S4 Ep 555Ep. 555 Hayo Loacker | Monty Waldin
Episode 555 Monty Waldin catches up with Hayo Loacker who speaks about his family, the Loacker wineries and their love of all things Biodynamic and Homeopathic! The Loacker family has been running its own wineries since 1978, strictly following the principles of biodynamics and homeopathy. This means that in the vineyards of Loacker estates the use of chemistry was completely eliminated by using biodynamic and homeopathic products in the treatment of the vines. Arnica, for example, serves to remedy the damage caused by hail to vines and grapes; the Aconitum is used against sudden infections, while Silicea helps to strengthen the structure of the leaves and shoots. The purpose is to obtain the maximum possible balance of the vine. Now the wines made according to natural criteria, unlike in the past, are a guarantee of high quality. The Loacker family still owns three wineries in three different Italian wine regions (Alto Adige, Montalcino, Maremma) with a total area of 45 hectares of vineyards. The wines produced embrace a wide range so as to be able to conquer all the palates of wine lovers. S4 Ep 550Ep. 550 Marina Marcarino | Monty Waldin
Ep. 550 Monty Waldin sits down with Marina Marcarino of Punset Winery & CEO of Vintesa ( A wine consorzium that began in 2004). "Punset" is from the Piedmontese dialect meaning “beautiful hill.” The estate is located in Neive, in the heart of the Langhe area of Piedmont on top of a hill overlooking the historic capital. It was given the nickname by the Count of Neive to describe the view of their lands emerging by the autumn fog viewed from his castle. During the 1980s Marina Marcarino took over the estate and began formally converting the property to organic farming, rejecting the use of all kinds of pesticide and chemical products. Her agronomic practices include minimal use of treatments based on copper and sulfur, preferring biodynamic preparations and embracing the philosophy of Manasobu Fukuoka, also called “agriculture of not doing.” Vineyards are kept green and there is a limited working of the soil with the ideal that the farm is perfectly integrated into nature. History: Their estate has been owned by her family for four generations. However, before Marina formally became a winemaker, the family were making wine as a hobby. Originally, she was actually supposed to become an engineer because her parents wanted her to run the family construction company. However, as a child her grandmother would care for her at vineyards and a their farm, so, she ended up falling in love with farming in general at a young age. She wanted to be like her grandmother who was making wine in her spare time. www.regalwine.com/producer/punset/ or en.punset.com/ Facebook: @regalwineimports Or @punsetbiowines Instagram: @regal_wine Or @punsetbiowines Twitter: @Regal Wine Imports Let's keep in touch! S4 Ep 545Ep. 545 Pierre Jean Monnoyer | Monty Waldin
Italian Wine Podcast Episode 545 Monty Waldin chats with Pierre Jean Monnoyer of Casa Raia Winery in Montalcino, Italy Casa Raia sits on a promontory beneath the famed medieval town of Montalcino in Tuscany. This estate saw the first roots of the Sangiovese vine labouring through inhospitable rock centuries ago. Destiny seemed to play a role in Ludmilla Temertey’s adventures while searching for a home in Tuscany. She enlisted the help of a Hermit who had walked every path that ever was created in the region to find her haven and destiny brought her back to Montalcino where she had first come in 1978. In 1997 the abandoned farm house was lovingly restored and named Casa Raia after the matriarch of the family, Raissa Temertey. n 2006, Ludmilla’s daughter Kalyna Temertey Canta and her husband Pierre Jean Monnoyer took over the care of the vineyards and created the winery that is now Azienda Agricola Casa Raia. They restored the old vineyards with unyielding respect for the land that so generously nurtures us all. Espousing a philosophy that is best described as “the vine determines the wine”, Pierre Jean is producing natural wines that are an expression of a deep commitment to the production of authentic, quality wines.
