Historical Jesus

Located in the Apostolic Palace, the pope's official residence in Vatican City, The Sistine Chapel takes its name from Pope Sixtus, who had it built during the 1470s. Since that time, it has served as a place of both religious and functionary papal activity. Today, it is the site of the papal conclave, the process by which a new pope is selected. The chapel's fame lies mainly in the frescoes that decorate its interior by a team of Renaissance painters including Sandro Botticelli, Pietro Perugino, Pinturicchio, Domenico Ghirlandaio, Cosimo Rosselli, and most particularly the Sistine Chapel ceiling and The Last Judgment covering the whole altar wall, both by Michelangelo. Jesuit missionaries from Sainte-Marie among the Hurons were ritually tortured and killed on various dates between 1642-49 in Canada, in what is now southern Ontario, and in upstate New York, during the warfare between the Iroquioan tribes the Mohawk and the Huron. They have subsequently been canonized and venerated as the Canadian or North American martyrs by the Catholic Church (René Goupil, Isaac Jogues, Jean de Lalande, Antoine Daniel, Jean de Brébeuf, Gabriel Lalemant, Charles Garnier, Noël Chabanel). The Company of Jesus (to indicate its military spirit) also called "The Society of Jesus", were linguists, explorers and ethnographers. They learned New World Indigenous languages and customs, developed dictionaries and grammars, translated and preserved much of the history and traditions in their documents—which include details of their missions and activities and both the successes and failures of the Jesuits in their attempts to convert Indigenous peoples. Jesus was crucified and buried in Jerusalem. Christianity has a close bond with the city of Jerusalem, the Historical Jesus walked its streets and entered its building. It was in this holy city that at eight days of age, he was dedicated in the Great Temple according to Jewish custom. As a man from Nazareth, he preached at the Temple and eventually was arrested, detained, tried, crucified and buried in the city. After his death, his followers believed he rose from the dead, and the community they formed eventually became the early Christian Church, with its headquarters in Jerusalem. One of the most notable figures of the Elizabethan era, Sir Walter Raleigh (1552-1618) played a leading part in English colonization of America and helped defend England against the Spanish Armada. He was an English statesman, author, soldier, explorer, and a favorite courtier of England's Tudor Queen, Elizabeth the First. He was the younger half-brother of American explorer Sir Humphrey Gilbert and a cousin of adventurer Sir Richard Grenville. In 1594, Raleigh heard of a "City of Gold" in the New World and sailed across the Atlantic Ocean to find it, publishing an account of his experiences in a book that contributed to the legend of "El Dorado". In 1595, Raleigh’s quest for the New World’s fabled ‘City of Gold’ led him on an exciting adventure in search of the legendary and mythical golden city of El Dorado. The Massacre of the Innocents is a story recounted in the Nativity narrative of the Gospel of Matthew (2:16–18) in which Herod the Great, king of Judea, orders the execution of all male infants who are two years old and under in the vicinity of Bethlehem. Some Christians venerate the Holy Innocents as the first Christian martyrs, but most modern scholarship finds no evidence that it happened outside the passages in Matthew and thus consider it a Myth. The legend of the Seven Cities of Gold (aka Fabled Cities of Cibola) became mixed with the stories of El Dorado, which was sometimes said to be one of the seven cities. El Dorado is applied to a legendary New World story in which precious stones were found in fabulous abundance along with gold coins. Sir Walter Raleigh of Roanoke fame would later take up the search for the mythical kingdom. Francisco Vazquez de Coronado was a Spanish conquistador who led an expedition from Mexico through the southwestern USA in search of the fabled Cities of Cibola in the sixteenth century. He had hoped to reach the continent’s El Dorado located throughout the pueblos of the New Mexico Territory. In 1588, the dreaded Spanish Armada is coming closer and closer.
