The Anglo-Spanish War was an intermittent conflict (1585–1604) between the Kingdoms of Spain and England. The war included much English privateering against Spanish treasure ships in the New World, and several major sea battles including the Spanish Armada. On May 28th, 1588, a fleet of a hundred and fifty-one Spanish ships set out from Lisbon, bound for England. Its mission was to transport a huge invasion force across the Channel. The Spanish King, Philip II, was determined to remove Queen Elizabeth from the throne and return the English to the Catholic fold. Two months later the mighty Spanish Armada was sighted off the coast of Cornwall. This tale of religious dispute, shifting political alliance and naval supremacy influenced the subsequent exploration, commercialization, settlement and colonization of America. The third of the New Testament's four canonical Gospels is Luke. It tells of the origins, birth, ministry, death, resurrection, and ascension of Jesus. The author is anonymous but the traditional view that Luke the Evangelist was the companion of Paul is still put forward. John Hawkins was an Elizabethan shipbuilder, naval administrator and commander, merchant, navigator, privateer and slave trader. One of the foremost seamen of 16th-century England, he was the chief architect of the Elizabethan navy and was one of the many Buccaneers that roamed the shores of North America on behalf of Queen Elizabeth the First in the 1560s. Martin Frobisher was an Elizabethan seaman, adventurer, explorer and Buccaneer who made three voyages (1576-77-78) to the New World looking for the Northwest Passage to Asia. The first book of the New Testament of the Bible and one of the three synoptic Gospels. Matthew tells how Israel's messiah (Christ), Jesus, comes to his people (the Jews) but is rejected by them and how, after his resurrection, he sends the disciples to the gentiles instead. Matthew wishes to emphasize that the Jewish tradition should not be lost in a church that was increasingly becoming gentile. The gospel reflects the struggles and conflicts between the evangelist's community and the other Jews, particularly with its sharp criticism of the scribes and Pharisees with the position that through their rejection of Christ, the Kingdom of Heaven has been taken away from them and given instead to the church. The gospel is anonymous. Traditionally attributed to the Apostle Matthew, the predominant scholarly view is that it was written in the last quarter of the first century by an anonymous Jew familiar with technical legal aspects of scripture. Most scholars think Matthew used the Gospel of Mark and the hypothetical sayings Gospel Q (which consists of the material Matthew shares in common with Luke) and is the product of the second generation of the Christian movement, though it draws on the memory of the first generation of the disciples of Jesus. Believed to be the earliest extant Gospel and the second of the four canonical Gospels and one of the three synoptic Gospels. Mark’s gospel tells of the ministry of Jesus from his baptism by John the Baptist to his death, the burial of his body, and the discovery of his empty tomb. It portrays Jesus as a teacher, an exorcist, a healer, and a miracle worker, though it does not mention a miraculous birth or divine pre-existence. Jesus refers to himself as the Son of Man. He is called the Son of God but keeps his messianic nature secret; even his disciples fail to understand him. All this is in keeping with the Christian interpretation of prophecy, which is believed to foretell the fate of the messiah as suffering servant.
