Historical Jesus

Jesus, at the age of twelve, accompanies Mary and Joseph, and a large group of their relatives and friends to Jerusalem on pilgrimage for Passover. On the day of their return, Jesus lingered, staying in the Temple, but his parents thought that he was among their group when he was not. Mary and Joseph headed back home and after a day of travel realised Jesus was missing, so they returned to Jerusalem, finding the boy three days later. Located in the Apostolic Palace, the pope's official residence in Vatican City, The Sistine Chapel takes its name from Pope Sixtus, who had it built during the 1470s. Since that time, it has served as a place of both religious and functionary papal activity. Today, it is the site of the papal conclave, the process by which a new pope is selected. The chapel's fame lies mainly in the frescoes that decorate its interior by a team of Renaissance painters including Sandro Botticelli, Pietro Perugino, Pinturicchio, Domenico Ghirlandaio, Cosimo Rosselli, and most particularly the Sistine Chapel ceiling and The Last Judgment covering the whole altar wall, both by Michelangelo. The Company of Jesus (to indicate its military spirit) also called "The Society of Jesus", were linguists, explorers and ethnographers. They learned New World Indigenous languages and customs, developed dictionaries and grammars, translated and preserved much of the history and traditions in their documents—which include details of their missions and activities and both the successes and failures of the Jesuits in their attempts to convert Indigenous peoples. Jesus was crucified and buried in Jerusalem. Christianity has a close bond with the city of Jerusalem, the Historical Jesus walked its streets and entered its building. It was in this holy city that at eight days of age, he was dedicated in the Great Temple according to Jewish custom. As a man from Nazareth, he preached at the Temple and eventually was arrested, detained, tried, crucified and buried in the city. After his death, his followers believed he rose from the dead, and the community they formed eventually became the early Christian Church, with its headquarters in Jerusalem. In 1594, Raleigh heard of a "City of Gold" in the New World and sailed across the Atlantic Ocean to find it, publishing an account of his experiences in a book that contributed to the legend of "El Dorado".
