STORY OF AMERICA — In 1607, after many years of unsuccessful American settlements, the English founded the colony of Jamestown in Virginia. Eastern Virginia is called ‘Tidewater’ because the rivers moved to the rhythm of the ocean before they finally merge with Chesapeake Bay. The area between the James and York rivers is known simply as "the peninsula," and it is here that our story unfolds. The entire peninsula is rich in history. The mouth of the James River aligns directly with the entrance to Chesapeake Bay from the Atlantic Ocean. As Virginia's longest river, the James enabled the early settlers to explore far inland in search of the fable passage to the wealth of China. Exploration lead to settlement, and so the lands along the James River were the first to be colonized. The 8th-century BC Israelite prophet after whom a book of the Old Testament is named, was known as Isaiah. The Book of Isaiah is quoted many times by New Testament writers as direct prophetic revelations of the nature, purpose, and detail of the death of Jesus. The Book of Mormon reveals that all things prophesied by Isaiah have been and will be fulfilled. One of the most known parables of Jesus in the New Testament, "The Prodigal Son" refers to the story in the Gospel of Luke (15:11-32) about a son who squanders his inheritance and later returns to his father, who welcomes him back with a celebration, despite the anger and jealousy of his brother. Christians believe the parable illustrates God's unconditional love and forgiveness for sinners who repent. The secular term "prodigal son" has also come to mean a son or daughter who leaves home, acts irresponsibly, but then feels remorse and returns. STORY OF AMERICA — Having obtained backing to establish an English colony on the North American Atlantic coastline, Bartholomew Gosnold set sail in a small bark named the Concord in 1602, with thirty-two on board towards Martha's Vineyard and Provincetown. Gosnold (born in Grundisburgh, Suffolk, England) pioneered a direct sailing route due west from the Azores to the New World in what later became New England. He and his crew explored the coastline with the intention of establishing a colony and small fishing outpost in the southern part of Massachusetts on Cuttyhunk Island. After being baptized by John the Baptist, Jesus was enticed by the Devil after 40 days and nights of fasting in the Judaean Desert. Jesus having refused each temptation during this entire time of spiritual battle. Satan then departed and Jesus returned to Galilee to begin his ministry. The temptation of Christ is a biblical narrative detailed in the three synoptic gospels of Matthew, Mark, and Luke. STORY OF AMERICA — Samuel Champlain took some colonists up the great River St. Lawrence to establish a new settlement and fur trading post. He founded France's first permanent Canadian colony, which he named Quebec—an indigenous word meaning: where the river narrows. This strategic location was at the foot of a great rocky cape on the north shore, which formed a natural fortress barring the way upstream to the interior. The early years of the Quebec colony were hard, and the population grew slowly. Samuel Champlain administered its affairs and took personal charge of an organized exploration of the unknown interior. STORY OF AMERICA — French King Henri IV granted a fur monopoly to a noble who led a colonizing expedition to an island located near the mouth of the St. Croix River in 1604, which in time was to mark the international boundary between the Canadian province of New Brunswick and the American state of Maine. In the spring of 1605, France’s St. Croix settlement was moved to a new site across the Bay of Fundy, on the shore of the Annapolis Basin, an inlet in western Nova Scotia. Here at Port Royal, France's most successful colony to date was established. The general area came to be known as Acadia. Among the lieutenants on this undertaking was a geographer named Samuel de Champlain, who promptly carried out a major exploration of the northeastern coastline of what is now the United States. In 1611, the original printing of the King James Version (KJV) Bible was published by Robert Barker, the King's Printer, as a complete folio Bible. The original printing was made before English spelling was standardized and there were no illustrations at all in the Authorized Version, the main form of decoration being the historiated initial letters provided for books and chapters – together with the decorative title pages to the Bible itself, and to the New Testament.  The Authorized Version's written style is an important part of its influence on English, and its spread throughout North America. STORY OF AMERICA — At the beginning of the 1600s, the initial phase of European exploration of the North American continent slowly began to move towards colonization. This early, fledgling Colonial Movement was in need of strong, talented, and determined leaders. Throughout his life, Samuel de Champlain was a loyal Catholic soldier. As a young man, he learned to fight with the firearms of his time, acquiring this practical knowledge when serving with the army during the later stages of France's religious wars involving the Holy Catholic League in Brittany from 1594 to 98. During this time he attained the rank of Captain. His soldiering skills, along with his talents as a Navigator and Geographer, would later serve him well during his many adventures in the New World. Making the King James Version (KJV) of the Bible — The task of translating the Bible into English was undertaken by a group of scholars approved by King James the First. All were members of the Church of England and most were clergy. The scholars worked in six committees, two based in each of the University of Oxford, the University of Cambridge, and Westminster.
