The concept of Purgatory is not adhered to by all Christians but is nevertheless a fascinating topic well worth investigating. The word "purgatory" is rooted in Latin, meaning to purify, purge, or cleanse; a place or condition of temporal punishment for spiritual cleansing after death of souls dying penitent and destined ultimately for Heaven. It is NOT considered as a place of probation, for, the ultimate salvation of those in purgatory is assured, and the impenitent are NOT received into purgatory. The souls in purgatory are supposed, however, to receive relief through the prayers of the faithful and according to the traditional Catholic understanding, through the sacrifice of the mass. Protestants do not believe in purgatory. They typically reject the doctrine because they argue it lacks biblical support and is inconsistent with the Protestant belief in salvation by faith alone, which holds that Jesus's sacrifice is sufficient for all sin. Jesus told a story about a farmer who sowed good seed, but an enemy later sowed weeds among the wheat while people slept. Fearing they would uproot the wheat, the farmer instructed his servants to let both grow until the harvest. At the harvest, the weeds would be gathered and burned, and the wheat would be stored in the barn. Jesus later explained the parable's meaning (Matthew 13:24-30;36-43): the farmer is the Son of Man, the field is the world, the good seed are the children of the kingdom, and the weeds are the children of the evil one. The harvest is the end of the age, and the reapers are angels who will separate the righteous from the wicked. Various native tribes in northern New York State and southeastern Canada warred amongst themselves long before the arrival of Europeans on the continent. By the early seventeenth century, new alliances were formed and the Iroquoian-Mohawks became mortal enemies of the French.  English Christians "Remember, remember, the 5th of November.” Guy Fawkes Night or Bonfire Night celebrates the capture of Fawkes (1570-1606), a Catholic, who was apprehended under the British Houses of Parliament with 36 barrels of gunpowder, fuses and matches, planning to blow up Protestant King James I and his entire Parliament, which would have severely altered the course of faith and religion in Great Britain. November Second is a Christian feast day of prayer and remembrance for the deceased, known as All Souls Day, observed by the Roman Catholic Church, some Anglican and Lutheran denominations, and various Eastern Orthodox and Eastern Catholic churches. Christians honor the departed through prayer, Mass, and acts of charity, with many traditions involving visiting cemeteries to decorate graves. The observance grew out of earlier Christian traditions of praying for the dead. The practice has roots in the belief that the living can assist those who have died through prayer, love, and sacrifice. The Salem Witch Trails were a series of hearings and prosecutions of people accused of witchcraft in colonial Massachusetts between February 1692 and May 1693. More than 200 people were accused amidst mass panic, inexplicable mania, and collective hysteria. Thirty people were found guilty, nineteen of whom were executed by hanging (14 women and 5 men). The Father of New France, Samuel de Champlain, was a larger than life visionary adventurer who made a New World in Canada against extreme odds and challenges, but little is known of this secretive, mysterious, enigmatic Frenchman. During the summer of 1609, Champlain attempted to form better relations and alliances with the local First Nations tribes including Wendat-Hurons, Algonquins, and Montagnais who lived in the area of the St. Lawrence River. These tribes sought Champlain's help in their war against the Haudenosaunee, also known as the Iroquois Confederacy, League or Five Nations. The founder of New France set off with his men to explore the Rivière des Iroquois—now known as the Richelieu River—and became the first known European to lay eyes on and map one of the continent’s majestic bodies of water, named Lake Champlain in his honor.
