Historical Jesus

Jesus, at the age of twelve, accompanies Mary and Joseph, and a large group of their relatives and friends to Jerusalem on pilgrimage for Passover. On the day of their return, Jesus lingered, staying in the Temple, but his parents thought that he was among their group when he was not. Mary and Joseph headed back home and after a day of travel realized Jesus was missing, so they returned to Jerusalem, finding the boy three days later. STORY of AMERICA 🇺🇸 England’s Henry Hudson was a sea explorer and navigator during the early 17th century, best known for his explorations of present-day Canada and parts of the northeastern United States. In 1609, an English adventurer hired by the Dutch government led an expedition to find a path to Asia through North America. His expedition led to the European discovery of the Hudson River and the establishment of New Amsterdam, a colonial settlement that later became New York City. In 1610, he sailed again, but this time flying the British flag. The Massacre of the Innocents is a story recounted in the Nativity narrative of the Gospel of Matthew (2:16–18) in which Herod the Great, king of Judea, orders the execution of all male infants who are two years old and under in the vicinity of Bethlehem. Some Christians venerate the Holy Innocents as the first Christian martyrs, but most modern scholarship finds no evidence that it happened outside the passages in Matthew and thus consider it a Myth. MLK was a Baptist minister, deeply rooted in the African-American Christian tradition, who became a pivotal leader in the Civil Rights Movement, drawing his powerful oratory and philosophy of nonviolent resistance from his faith and biblical teachings. He co-pastored Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta with his father and was a Protestant Christian, a denomination that grew from the Reformation started by the original Martin Luther, whom King Jr. was named after. The Popham Colony Site is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The exact site of the Popham Colony was lost until 1888 when a plan for the site was found in the General Archives in Spain. This plan exactly matches the location at Sabino Head near Maine's Popham Beach State Park. Later archaeology in 1994 confirmed the location and the accuracy of the plan. Annual feast honors the power and significance of the name "Jesus," which means "God saves" or "Savior" in Hebrew/Aramaic. Observed during first week of January using varying dates & names by Catholics and some Protestant denominations (Anglican, Episcopal, and Lutheran), the invocation is rooted in the biblical account where the angel Gabriel instructs both Mary and Joseph to name the child Jesus. The Sagadahoc Settlement—also known as the Popham Colony—was established in 1607 and was located in the present-day town of Phippsburg, Maine, near the mouth of the Kennebec River. It was founded a few months after its rival, the colony at Jamestown. The Popham Colony was the second settlement in the region that would eventually become known as New England. The first colony was St. Croix Island, near what is now the town of Calais. St. Croix Island was settled initially in June 1604, then moved in 1605 by Samuel de Champlain to the Bay of Fundy. The Popham Colony was the vanguard of a new colonization model for the English, the result of rights stripped from nobleman and redistributed to new corporate entities. After years of sailors kidnapping natives off the coast of modern day Maine to train as interpreters, Sir Ferdinando Gorges and Sir John Popham returned them hoping the fair treatment given to their captives, will foster good will with their native communities. January First is the Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God, a Holy Day of Obligation for Catholics (meaning that Mass attendance is required), also observed by some Protestants (Anglicans & Lutherans) as a related feast. The third of the New Testament's four canonical Gospels is Luke. It tells of the origins, birth, ministry, death, resurrection, and ascension of Jesus. The author is anonymous but the traditional view that Luke the Evangelist was the companion of Paul is still put forward. The first book of the New Testament of the Bible and one of the three synoptic Gospels. Matthew tells how Israel's messiah (Christ), Jesus, comes to his people (the Jews) but is rejected by them and how, after his resurrection, he sends the disciples to the gentiles instead. Matthew wishes to emphasize that the Jewish tradition should not be lost in a church that was increasingly becoming gentile. The gospel reflects the struggles and conflicts between the evangelist's community and the other Jews, particularly with its sharp criticism of the scribes and Pharisees with the position that through their rejection of Christ, the Kingdom of Heaven has been taken away from them and given instead to the church. The gospel is anonymous. Traditionally attributed to the Apostle Matthew, the predominant scholarly view is that it was written in the last quarter of the first century by an anonymous Jew familiar with technical legal aspects of scripture. Most scholars think Matthew used the Gospel of Mark and the hypothetical sayings Gospel Q (which consists of the material Matthew shares in common with Luke) and is the product of the second generation of the Christian movement, though it draws on the memory of the first generation of the disciples of Jesus. Believed to be the earliest extant Gospel and the second of the four canonical Gospels and one of the three synoptic Gospels. Mark’s gospel tells of the ministry of Jesus from his baptism by John the Baptist to his death, the burial of his body, and the discovery of his empty tomb. It portrays Jesus as a teacher, an exorcist, a healer, and a miracle worker, though it does not mention a miraculous birth or divine pre-existence. Jesus refers to himself as the Son of Man. He is called the Son of God but keeps his messianic nature secret; even his disciples fail to understand him. George Frideric Handel (1685-1759) was a German-British Baroque composer. His most famous work, the 1742 oratorio Messiah with its "Hallelujah" chorus, is among the most popular works in choral music. The text from Messiah was compiled from the King James Bible and the Book of Common Prayer.
