Historical Jesus

George Frideric Handel (1685-1759) was a German-British Baroque composer. His most famous work, the 1742 oratorio Messiah with its "Hallelujah" chorus, is among the most popular works in choral music. The text from Messiah was compiled from the King James Bible and the Book of Common Prayer. Handel was born, raised, and trained in German Prussia but settled in England  where he spent the bulk of his career and was buried in London’s Westminster Abbey. ACAPELLA 4. Saint Nicholas was an early Christian bishop of Greek descent from the maritime city of Myra in modern-day Turkey during the time of the Roman Empire. His legendary habit of secret gift-giving gave rise to the traditional model of Saint Nick, better known as Santa Claus. Little is known about the historical Saint Nicholas. A bright, icy, small Solar System body passes by Earth and is observed around the world every 76 years. Its tail is over 96 million miles long of dust and gas blown out from the coma surrounding its nucleus. British scientist Edmund Halley's calculations predicted the comet would return, and it did. Halley used Isaac Newton's law of gravity to calculate the orbits of the comets. He concluded that these comets were actually the same comet returning on a long elliptical orbit around the sun. The Comet has been observed throughout history, including near the time of the birth of Jesus of Nazareth. A key figure and major promoter of the English colonization of New England was Pioneering colonist Ferdinando Gorges (1565-1647), a British naval, military commander, and investor in the Popham Colony. His early involvement in English trade with and settlement of America as well as his efforts in founding the Province of Maine earned him the title of the "Father of English Colonization in America," even though he never set foot in the New World. The Plymouth Company was chartered by King James in 1606 with responsibility for colonizing the northern east coast of America. The merchants agreed to finance the settlers’ trip in return for repayment of their expenses plus interest out of the profits made. The Plymouth Company established the Popham Colony, in present-day Maine, the northern answer to the previously discussed Jamestown Colony, founded by the Virginia Company of London. The Popham Colony was named for its chief investor and Lord Chief Justice of England Sir John Popham who presided over the trials of Sir Walter Raleigh and the conspirators of the Gunpowder Plot, including Guy Fawkes. The hymnal prayer "Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world, have mercy on us" originates from the Book of John and the Book of Revelation in the Bible, and has been incorporated into Christian liturgy by its Latin name, Agnus Dei (meaning Lamb of God) since at least the 7th century. The phrase originates with John the Baptist's declaration, who, upon seeing Jesus, proclaimed, "Behold the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!" (John 1:29). This was a symbolic reference to the Passover lamb, an unblemished animal sacrificed to deliver the Israelites from slavery. that Jesus is the "Lamb of God". The prayer was officially added to the Roman Rite around the late 7th century and is now a standard part of the Catholic and many other Christian masses, typically occurring during the breaking of the consecrated bread before communion. The worship of the "slain, yet triumphant" Lamb in the New testament Book of Revelation is a vision of the risen Christ, which reinforces the "Lamb of God" imagery in the heavenly liturgy. The prayer acknowledges Christ as the ultimate sacrifice, whose death provides a way for believers to be freed from the bondage of sin. It calls for mercy upon the worshipers and, in its third invocation, asks for peace. Protestants do not believe in purgatory. They typically reject the doctrine because they argue it lacks biblical support and is inconsistent with the Protestant belief in salvation by faith alone, which holds that Jesus's sacrifice is sufficient for all sin.
