In the Gospel of Mark (6:4), Jesus says, "A prophet is not without honor, except in his hometown and among his relatives and in his own household". Jesus said this in Nazareth, where he was rejected by his family and neighbors. The people of his home town knew Jesus well, but they didn't believe who he was. They called him "the son of Mary" to reject his virgin birth and Messianic claims. Jesus was unable to perform miracles in Nazareth because of their lack of faith. e170. Infancy gospels or protoevangelions are a genre of religious texts that arose in the 2nd century. They are part of New Testament apocrypha, and provide accounts of the birth and early life of Jesus. The texts are of various and uncertain origin, and are generally non-canonical in major modern branches of Christianity. They include the Gospel of James, which introduces the concept of the Perpetual Virginity of Mary, and the Infancy Gospel of Thomas (not to be confused with the unrelated Gospel of Thomas), both of which cover many miraculous incidents from the life of Mary and the childhood of Jesus that are not included in the canonical gospels. Jesus, at the age of twelve, accompanies Mary and Joseph, and a large group of their relatives and friends to Jerusalem on pilgrimage for Passover. On the day of their return, Jesus lingered, staying in the Temple, but his parents thought that he was among their group when he was not. Mary and Joseph headed back home and after a day of travel realized Jesus was missing, so they returned to Jerusalem, finding the boy three days later. STORY of AMERICA 🇺🇸 England’s Henry Hudson was a sea explorer and navigator during the early 17th century, best known for his explorations of present-day Canada and parts of the northeastern United States. In 1609, an English adventurer hired by the Dutch government led an expedition to find a path to Asia through North America. His expedition led to the European discovery of the Hudson River and the establishment of New Amsterdam, a colonial settlement that later became New York City. The Popham Colony Site is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The exact site of the Popham Colony was lost until 1888 when a plan for the site was found in the General Archives in Spain. This plan exactly matches the location at Sabino Head near Maine's Popham Beach State Park. Later archaeology in 1994 confirmed the location and the accuracy of the plan. Annual feast honors the power and significance of the name "Jesus," which means "God saves" or "Savior" in Hebrew/Aramaic. Observed during first week of January using varying dates & names by Catholics and some Protestant denominations (Anglican, Episcopal, and Lutheran), the invocation is rooted in the biblical account where the angel Gabriel instructs both Mary and Joseph to name the child Jesus. While the feast focuses on the primary name "Jesus," the Bible uses many other venerated names and titles to describe Christ's nature and mission. Devotion to the Holy Name was popularized in the 15th century by the Franciscan friar Saint Bernardine of Siena, who encouraged people to place the Greek monogram of Jesus' name, IHS (from the first three letters of the Greek word for Jesus), on their doors. The Sagadahoc Settlement—also known as the Popham Colony—was established in 1607 and was located in the present-day town of Phippsburg, Maine, near the mouth of the Kennebec River. It was founded a few months after its rival, the colony at Jamestown. The Popham Colony was the second settlement in the region that would eventually become known as New England. The first colony was St. Croix Island, near what is now the town of Calais. St. Croix Island was settled initially in June 1604, then moved in 1605 by Samuel de Champlain to the Bay of Fundy. The Popham Colony was the vanguard of a new colonization model for the English, the result of rights stripped from nobleman and redistributed to new corporate entities. After years of sailors kidnapping natives off the coast of modern day Maine to train as interpreters, Sir Ferdinando Gorges and Sir John Popham returned them hoping the fair treatment given to their captives, will foster good will with their native communities.
