Who was Bartholomew the Apostle? Who was Nathanael the Apostle? Were they perhaps the same person? Gospel of Matthew 25:1-13 relates Jesus' teachings of the Parable of the Ten Virgins comparing the kingdom of heaven to bridesmaids waiting for a bridegroom. Five virgins were wise and had extra oil for their lamps, while five were foolish and ran out of oil. When the bridegroom arrived late, the foolish virgins went to buy more oil and missed the wedding, while the wise virgins were welcomed in. The parable teaches that people should always be prepared and watchful for the coming of Christ. During his early ministry, Jesus recruited or welcomed both men and women as close companions and followers. Of these supporters and admirers, twelve men became part of his inner circle or disciples. Philip the Apostle also called SAINT Philip by several Christian denominations was one of the original Twelve Disciples of Jesus according to all for Gospels of the New Testament. Pocahontas (1596–1617) befriended the daring English explorer and adventurer John Smith (1580–1631) in 1608 and later converted to Christianity. She married the Virginia tobacco planter John Rolfe (1585-1622) in 1614 and bore their son. Pocahontas has entered the pantheon of modern popular culture is a subject of art, literature, and film. Numerous places, landmarks, and products in the United States have been named after Pocahontas. Her story has been romanticized over the years, many aspects of which are fictional, with the most famous being the many celebrated stories told about her and John Smith. Captain John Smith (1580–1631) was an English soldier, explorer, colonial governor, admiral of New England, and author. He played an important role in the establishment of the colony at Jamestown, Virginia, the first permanent English settlement in North America, in the early 17th century. The Woman Caught in Adultery (adulterae) is a New Testament passage (pericope) that relates a message of mercy and forgiveness balanced with a call to holy living have endured in Christian thought. Both "let him who is without sin cast the first stone" and "go, and sin no more" have found their way into common usage. The English idiomatic phrase to "cast the first stone" is derived from this passage. Jesus and the Woman taken in Adultery is a story found in the Gospel of John. Indentures are agreements between two parties about long-term work. The length of servitude might be a specified number of years or until the servant reached a certain age. Some people indentured themselves in order to gain passage to America or to escape debt and poverty. Discovery that Virginia was the perfect environment to cultivate tobacco led to Jamestown's success… and to a great deal of conflict between the English and the natives. Relations between the local natives and colonists became increasingly uncomfortable as more white settlers arrived in Virginia. The natives moved farther inland to distance themselves from the English, but more Europeans kept arriving. Both sides were guilty of straining the relationship. The English stole corn and other food supplies and the natives ambushed the English for their tools and weapons. Finally, the conflict erupted in the winter of 1610. STORY OF AMERICA — English investors who funded the establishment of the Virginia colony may have been concerned with the glory of England and the spreading of the Anglican religion to the natives, but above all, they demanded that the new enterprise turn a profit. Tobacco eventually proved to be the economic base for Virginia for the next two centuries. The original Jamestown colonists had never intended to grow all of their own food. Their plans depended upon trade with the local natives to supply them with food between the arrivals of periodic supply ships from England. Lack of access to fresh water and a severe drought crippled the limited agricultural production of the Virginia colonists. Combined with the lack of trade with the Native Americans and the failure of supply ships, the colony found itself with far too little food for the upcoming winter. STORY OF AMERICA — In 1607, after many years of unsuccessful American settlements, the English founded the colony of Jamestown in Virginia. Eastern Virginia is called ‘Tidewater’ because the rivers moved to the rhythm of the ocean before they finally merge with Chesapeake Bay. The area between the James and York rivers is known simply as "the peninsula," and it is here that our story unfolds. The entire peninsula is rich in history. The mouth of the James River aligns directly with the entrance to Chesapeake Bay from the Atlantic Ocean. As Virginia's longest river, the James enabled the early settlers to explore far inland in search of the fable passage to the wealth of China. Exploration lead to settlement, and so the lands along the James River were the first to be colonized. The 8th-century BC Israelite prophet after whom a book of the Old Testament is named, was known as Isaiah. The Book of Isaiah is quoted many times by New Testament writers as direct prophetic revelations of the nature, purpose, and detail of the death of Jesus. The Book of Mormon reveals that all things prophesied by Isaiah have been and will be fulfilled. One of the most known parables of Jesus in the New Testament, "The Prodigal Son" refers to the story in the Gospel of Luke (15:11-32) about a son who squanders his inheritance and later returns to his father, who welcomes him back with a celebration, despite the anger and jealousy of his brother. Christians believe the parable illustrates God's unconditional love and forgiveness for sinners who repent. STORY OF AMERICA — Having obtained backing to establish an English colony on the North American Atlantic coastline, Bartholomew Gosnold set sail in a small bark named the Concord in 1602, with thirty-two on board towards Martha's Vineyard and Provincetown. Gosnold (born in Grundisburgh, Suffolk, England) pioneered a direct sailing route due west from the Azores to the New World in what later became New England. He and his crew explored the coastline with the intention of establishing a colony and small fishing outpost in the southern part of Massachusetts on Cuttyhunk Island. STORY OF AMERICA — Present-day New England is a region comprising six states in the Northeastern United States: Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont. English plans to colonize this part of America began to take concrete form at the turn of the 17th century. The first expedition to set out from England was led by Bartholomew Gosnold (1571-1607), an English sea captain who led the first recorded European expedition to Cape Cod, Provincetown, Cuttyhunk Island, and Martha's Vineyard.
