Historical Jesus

The Massacre of the Innocents is a story recounted in the Nativity narrative of the Gospel of Matthew (2:16–18) in which Herod the Great, king of Judea, orders the execution of all male infants who are two years old and under in the vicinity of Bethlehem. Some Christians venerate the Holy Innocents as the first Christian martyrs, but most modern scholarship finds no evidence that it happened outside the passages in Matthew and thus consider it a Myth. The legend of the Seven Cities of Gold (aka Fabled Cities of Cibola) became mixed with the stories of El Dorado, which was sometimes said to be one of the seven cities. El Dorado is applied to a legendary New World story in which precious stones were found in fabulous abundance along with gold coins. Sir Walter Raleigh of Roanoke fame would later take up the search for the mythical kingdom. Francisco Vazquez de Coronado was a Spanish conquistador who led an expedition from Mexico through the southwestern USA in search of the fabled Cities of Cibola in the sixteenth century. He had hoped to reach the continent’s El Dorado located throughout the pueblos of the New Mexico Territory. In 1588, the dreaded Spanish Armada is coming closer and closer. The Anglo-Spanish War was an intermittent conflict (1585–1604) between the Kingdoms of Spain and England. The war included much English privateering against Spanish treasure ships in the New World, and several major sea battles including the Spanish Armada. On May 28th, 1588, a fleet of a hundred and fifty-one Spanish ships set out from Lisbon, bound for England. Its mission was to transport a huge invasion force across the Channel. The Spanish King, Philip II, was determined to remove Queen Elizabeth from the throne and return the English to the Catholic fold. Two months later the mighty Spanish Armada was sighted off the coast of Cornwall. This tale of religious dispute, shifting political alliance and naval supremacy influenced the subsequent exploration, commercialization, settlement and colonization of America. The third of the New Testament's four canonical Gospels is Luke. It tells of the origins, birth, ministry, death, resurrection, and ascension of Jesus. The author is anonymous but the traditional view that Luke the Evangelist was the companion of Paul is still put forward. The most probable date for its composition is around AD 80–110, and there is evidence that it was still being revised well into the 2nd century. John Hawkins was an Elizabethan shipbuilder, naval administrator and commander, merchant, navigator, privateer and slave trader. One of the foremost seamen of 16th-century England, he was the chief architect of the Elizabethan navy and was one of the many Buccaneers that roamed the shores of North America on behalf of Queen Elizabeth the First in the 1560s. Martin Frobisher was an Elizabethan seaman, adventurer, explorer and Buccaneer who made three voyages (1576-77-78) to the New World looking for the Northwest Passage to Asia.
