Aiman Azri

Tonight we had a man whose distaste for tauge and comical rants in the mamak has lead him to a colourful life of writing, poetry slams, theater work and of course, stand-up comedy. He’s name is Aiman Azri and has a thing or two when it comes to witty remarks about life’s conundrums.   Aiman Azri is a 28 year old writer by day and a comedian by night (or bi-nightly, depending on the situation). He is the head editor for GenYes.my. An initiative kickstarted by YES4G to create an online hub for university students everywhere to catch up on the latest trends, campus news, events and student insights.   For Aiman, comedy has something he’s been subconsciously been doing since forever. He used to spend countless nights at the mamak, putting hilarious complaints and snarky comments about life and current affairs (usually it’s his relationship life). One day, his friends got him into an open mic slot. Aiman took the chance and realised that he could do a good job at it.   Aiman is a person who prefers to write his materials down and not spewing it out on the spot. He notes that his jokes though, are based on some form of tragedy and failure, Aiman keeps his head high as he wants to laugh at it along with his audience. Being an open mic regular for the comedy circuit in KL, Aiman will be performing for PJLA’s One Mic Stand later tomorrow night (29th September, 9pm) and at TimeOut KL’s Comedy Thursday (1st October, 8:30pm).   For the record, Aiman scored 14! Son Of A Policeman

Tonight we had the six-man band, Son Of A Policeman with us! Unfortunately we could only cram in two of them in the live studio. What could had been a hectic Smartypants trailblazer turned into a mini-listening party complete with milo and crackers in our pantry.   On to serious business, Son Of A Policeman or SOAP for short, is a local Subang-based band with and arrangement headache of six members! SOAP’s members all came from different backgrounds of music, that just comes together as the stage lights are on and the crowd beckons for them. A mixture of RnB, Hip-Hop, Jazz, Funk and tons more accumulate into a genre which they themselves call, ‘indie rojak’.   Main man of SOAP is Joshua Ganesan. He started it all in 2012 after leaving the folk & jazz outfit, Black Ties & Misais in 2011. By 2013, bandmates Axl Grey, Sean Michael and Zijunn Tan joined in. With Sean and Zijunn being multi-instrumentalists; this gave the band a whole new dynamic during sets, Sean and Zijunn would change slots, giving a different style of performance every time. The two final pieces were filled by Jonathan Chin and Jee Yann Choong, drummer and keyboardist of the band.   In 2014, the band entered Tune Studios’ Battle & Win contest. SOAP emerged up top to win an album deal with the studio and is currently finishing up their debut EP, Sleepless In Subang.   For the record, Joshua, Jee and Zijunn from SOAP scored 19! The Mating Game

Why reinvent the wheel when it comes to dating? The animal kingdom is chock full of tricks on how to attract a mate, and we figured in the competitive world of dating - maybe there’s a thing or two we could learn from it. In this episode we talk to evolutionary psychologist Dr Ian Stephen from Macquarie University in Sydney Australia, and Dr Cedric Tan who has studied the sexual dynamics of various animals at Oxford University. They will be helping us find out how some of these strategies - as weird as they are - might help us understand a little more about what motivates us when choosing from the human dating pool, and in the process, we also hope to pick up some tips on how to game the system.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Ahmad Faris

Tonight we had a man who’s single vision of creating a youth-centric portal has led him to creating a creative agency, a popular online TV show and even SE Asia’s biggest crowdfunded event; he’s none other than the leader of the IkanPaos Kolektif, it’s Ahmad Faris!   Ahmad Faris’ story all started with a Diploma in Broadcasting before he ventured off into Astro Awani and ending up as a newsreader for the channel. After realising television programmes cater to all age groups with the exception of youths, Faris stopped his news reading job as he wants to write it for himself.   The IkanPaos Kolektif was actually setup in Faris’ bedroom as an idea of a one-stop avenue for a self-funded, highly collaborative one with working on projects with other companies and businesses. With the ball rolling, Faris and his business partner Ahmad Hafizzuden, created TAPAU.tv as they wanted to fill the void where television did not serve nor represent the youth culture of Malaysia.   Faris, wanting to increase TAPAU.tv’s traffic flow devised a bold new plan in 2014. He and the IkanPaos Kolektif coupled with the power of crowdfunding, managed to launch TAPAUfest. It was South East Asia’s first and biggest crowdfunded festival ever. The goal was set for RM85,000 in 30 days. The team managed to pass the goal at a cool RM87,705 at the end of the month. TAPAU.fest was a success with a combination of local talents from Chinese opera, clothing, food, films, furniture, music, talks and games. Even the multi-award winning film Terbaik Dari Langit was premiered at the fest before it’s official screening! For the record, Faris scored 16! Arif Rafhan

Tonight, we had a man who’s drawing prowess brought him all over, whether it be animating, illustrating or graphically recording a man’s speech in Chiang Mai, he’s none other than the talented, Arif Rafhan!   Officially, Arif is an illustrator but his mediums and final products vary as much as the colours on his palette. One minute he’ll be designing an infographic, and the other he’ll be finalising his graphic novels. For a man who draws for a living, he started off in the binary world of technolgy when he studied for a Bachelor’s Degree in IT early in 2000.   He worked as the Creative Director in an e-Learning company for 11 years before finally setting off to be the true artist. Over the course of the transition, Arif dabbled in the world of animation where his clients range from Philips Singapore, Asus Singapore and Maybank to name a few. With a few years down the line Arif started trying out graphic recording.   Graphic Recording is when a speaker is presenting a talk, and a graphic designer at the back would instantly draw out a mind-map to take in the gist of the speech into a more digestible manner. This new medium has brought him all over including recording for PEAK Magazine’s anniversary, a TED Talk in Chiang Mai and also the Leadership Energy Summit Asia 2014 where he drew Steve Wozniak’s speech!   In the world of publishing, Arif has illustrated Zan Azlee’s Adventures of a KL-lite in Afghanistan. He also illustrated Imaginary Friends, a collection of short stories by Melanie Lee and published by MPH. At the end October/November, Arif will be publishing his upcoming semi-autobiographical graphic novel called Pelempang Realiti (Slap of Reality; in English) under Maple Comics. It chronicles Arif’s journey around South East Asian countries. Arif’s work can be found under his Superdoofus Collective. The one-stop shop for all of his artistic creations. H3

Tonight, we have a local DJ producer who’s gonna be hitting it big opening for Skrillex later this month; he’s the one and only, H3!   When the DJ decks aren’t in his presence, his real name is Harith Hisham Hashim. H3 is known for his heavy almost schizophrenic-like DJ style where he jumps between 3-4 types of genre in one set. Changing up the tempo, pace and how hard the bass would hit for his audience’s euphoria. H3’s story started off in 2007 where he came in for Mixing In Action’s monthly Saturday full-house parties at Bukit Bintang. He notes how frightening it was to do your first ever DJ set to a packed room but friends were there to give him all the support. Immediately he was hooked and in 2009, he honed into the genre of bass music. He craved an image and sound of dubstep, moombahton and trap for his listeners.   By 2012, H3 launched his first single, Feel It and it climbed to the #1 spot on Hitz.fm’s Malaysian English Top 10 chart. Soon, arguably his best remix track to date, Why Can’t You (Say So) was widely featured on internet publications and has spawned its own music video, aired on MTV.   He will be opening for Skrillex at KL Live on the 23rd September. H3 also did a pre-launch for his upcoming album STVRGATE (pronounced Stargate). The album will be officially launched this November. H3 gave us an exclusive listen to his second single titled Syren. Talkback Thursday: What should Malaysians focus on?

So another Malaysia Day has gone by. Looking at the papers though, you'd never know it. Mafia style murders, red shirts and Petaling Street have pretty much dominated the headlines. There's no doubt that news agencies thrive on it. It's all about readership and big numbers. The sensationalist stories. But we're trying to go beyond that today, move away from news-led conversations and talk about what Malaysians should focus on? Pastel Lite

Tonight we had the eclectic KL-based synthpop duo, Pastel Lite! Consisting of Eff Hakim and Mohd Faliq, these two been making waves since getting in the music scene in 2012. After a ton of tours and big stage appearances, we catch up on how these two been doing.   Eff is a 23 year old from Sabah while Faliq’s 26 and his hometown is in Johor. The story goes that these two met on Facebook after quitting their previous bands. Eff always wanted to do the singer-songwriter role but was told she didn’t had the set of skills for it. A mutual friend introduced her to Faliq; one jamming session later, Pastel Lite was born.   Though having not met each other before; both Eff and Faliq studied at the same audio engineering course at OCEAN Audio School in Damansara. Eff came from a hardcore background (thanks to her metal friends) while Faliq loves rock. Pastel Lite is a huge departure from their usual style.   Pastel Lite was initially a temporary name after their first track, Heart Drum. But after a few songs were completed, the duo realised it was irrelevant for them to change. Pastel Lite have performed for Urbanscapes every year, Goodvibes as well; and by January 2015 they released their first EP titled Etcetera.   It wasn’t long before they were called up to perform for Laneway Festival 2015 in Singapore. Derek 'Jingles' Jhingoree

Tonight we have a man who’s music is literally all he does. His name is Derek Jhingoree or more affectionately known by ‘Jingles’; he’s a UK born man who’s a world class bassist and also runs his own talent management company here in sunny/perpetually raining Malaysia.   Jingles career started when won an audition for Howard Jones. Jones picked up on how well Jingles plays the bass and took him under his wing as he brought Jingles on tour with him. As his experience grew, Jingles soon became a world class musician in his own right. He started playing bigger roles in music as with opening his own management company in 1991 back in Surrey, England.   As a musical director, Jingles has overseen the careers of multiple artists such as Mark Morrison (Germany), BBMak (British boy band), our own Gerard ‘G’ Singh and Jacklyn Victor. When he came here, he set up his current music management called Jingles Management Sdn Bhd. Jingles is committed in developing the creative talent of Malaysians; from the singers, songwriters, presenters and the models too.   Jingles is associated with a few record labels with Lakefront Records as the most notable one. Haris Rashid

Bringing a fresh change to our guest selection, today marks our first show that we feature a painter in our midst. He’s a young man from Kedah who’s making waves in the Malaysian art scene; Haris Rashid!   Haris is a 23 year old painter based in Kuala Lumpur and graduate of The One Academy in Sunway. During school he won his first poster design contest and when the whole process brought him joy, he knew this was his calling.   Haris doesn’t have a specific medium to call his favourite, and he uses a mix of colour pencils, acrylic, watercolour and pigments for his work. He’s still trying out new surfaces - with most of his work done on wood or pressure textured paper. That being said, do not be surprised to see Haris experimenting with street art, clay sculpting and others to keep his creative juices flowing.   During Deepavali 2014 whilst doing a commission for Publika, Haris was completing his first ever Ranggi. Soon after completion, his Ranggi work was highlighted and featured in Instagram’s official account. In 2015, young Haris managed to hold his own exhibition called Beauty In The Beast. A critically acclaimed exhibition centered on raising awareness of the endangered animals of Malaysia.   Later in October, Haris will be opening a gallery and featuring a group show, curated and organized under Studio Mekar (a studio which Haris founded himself). Thenesh Skip

Tonight we had the main protege of Malaysian comedy in the house, Thenesh Skip! With just a few years of comedy under his belt, Thenesh is quickly rising up the comedy ranks with his rockstar-like qualities on stage!   The Puchong man did a degree in Multimedia Design at University of Hertfordshire, leaving him with a strong grasp of Adobe powers which he uses for whack illustrations on a daily basis. Thenesh performed with a multitude of comedians ranging for our hard-hitting locals of Rizal van Geyzel and Desmond Lim; to the international guys of Brendan Burns and Daniel Kinno.   Notable performing highlights include being featured in the list of comedians for Time Out KL’s comedy show during the Cooler Lumpur Festival and also for the inaugural LOL Fest at Publika this year! This weekend, Thenesh will be a headlining for Minority Retort. Jumero

Tonight, we had an upcoming musical trio in the studio. Passionately calling themselves Jumero, brothers Jared and Michael Lim with childhood friend Ryan joined us tonight, and they’re the first trio to have a crack at Smartypants! The band started with the three members meeting up for jamming sessions after playing football in their neighbourhood during their childhood. Quickly the form of the band was decided - Jared is lead vocalist and guitarist for the band. Michael is the bassist, Ryan is the drummer/percussionist; Both do back-up vocals.   The name Jumero originated from a favourite bus stop of theirs. The band members lived in a place a bit detached from the Malaysia’s main city, so bus rides were in order. Whilst waiting for the bi-hourly bus ride, the three took the first letter of their names, followed with a vowel of their choice. They named their bus stop ‘Jumero’ and also adopted it for their band name in 2012. Having a style that could be described as ‘acoustic chill beach pop’, the band officially formed in September 2012 just in time for The Star R.AGE’s open mic contest. They aced it and got debut performance slot in Urbanscapes 2012! A plethora of events and a second coming of Urbanscapes in 2014 leads Jumero to releasing their debut album called Stepping Stones earlier in August. For the record, Jumero scored 10! Ushera Yusof

On this Wednesday night, we had another songstress, it’s our own KL girl, Ushera Yusof!   Ushera started off like many aspiring musicians, holding dear to her 9-5 job whilst in her spare time she singing at open-mics and gigs. After a good six years, Ushera decided to take the plunge into becoming a full-time musician in December 2012.   Ushera as of today, performs in three different formats, each with intriguing concepts of their own. First would be her #ROGUE A Night Of Cabaret with Ushera. A wild theatrical performance taking cues and songs from the musical theater world. Second is The Acoustic Ensemble where Soul Ballads, Swing, Bebop, Blues and Latin Jazz  come alive. Finally there’s  USHERAINTHEGROOVE, where Ushera assembles a 5-7 piece band to created a combined experience of chill-out and funky house. She’s performed a multitude of jazz festivals from the ubiquitous yearly Publika Jazz Festival to the recent World Youth Jazz Festival in May 2015 at Jalan Mesui, Kuala Lumpur. As a recording artist, Ushera has just released her first single Give Me on August 10th and the music video is under wraps and is set to be released on September 10th. Stephanie Chai

Tonight, we had a special woman who had a full 180º career change. Starting as a model turned TV host and finally to the entrepreneur that she is now, she’s none other than Stephanie Chai!   Stephanie grew up in between Kuching, Sarawak and Hamilton, New Zealand. She started her modelling days when she was 18 and continued to hone her skills up to her university days. After a few years of studies, Stephanie obtained a double major in Finance and International Business from the University of Auckland.   Soon after, Stephanie went into a multitude of fashion shoots and TV Presenting. Change came when she bravely dipped her toes into the world of entrepreneurship and never looked back. Her first start up was called WeddingGuideAsia.com. A website made for the very reason to make weddings less of a pain for all of us.   Her current project, LuxeNomad; was inspired by one of Stephanie’s friends who gave Stephanie a link to a similar US based website and instantly Stephanie went all ‘I can do that too!’.  With barely a hint of experience in the travelling industry, technology and e-commerce, Stephanie is eternally grateful for Google and her passionate team.   She may have made more money from modelling but Stephanie says the word for LuxeNomad is a more rewarding one as she’s happier than ever before! For the record, Stephanie scored 13.5! If you liked what you've heard via the podcast, catch more via the website here! That Time Of NightSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
