The Sad State of Orang Asli children and their education

In conjunction with Universal Children's Day, we turned our attention to the Orang Asli children and the difficulties they face with our education system. This minority group has had to harbour discrimination in school due to cultural differences, and deal with a glaring lack of support from local authorities. We discussed the policies that need to be put in place and how we need to walk the talk in helping them. Brandon Ho

Starting from an impromptu fill in for a sick event host in 2009 to being one of the familiar faces for the popular daily tv show, 8TV Quickie. His name is Brandon Ho, and he knows a thing or two of balancing studies with a full TV hosting job! The sick emcee journey started in 2009 while Brandon was working part-time for a warehouse sale. Brandon decided to go serious with his emcee work in 2011. When the 8TV Quickie host search competition came about in 2013, Brandon went up to try his luck and he won alongside his fellow future co-hosts, Jun Yong and Nadia Nash. Danial Naim

Every morning, as Malaysia’s workforce slowly wakes up to start the day, an average cup of joe on the side is the essential armament for us. But the daily 3-in-1 does not accentuate the taste buds as much as a skilled pull from an experienced barista. That’s where Danial Naim comes in. Danial Naim is a 26 year old business partner and head baristas for two prominent cafes in KL. One for Podgy and The Banker and the League of Captain. A KL-ite born and bred, he went off to Melbourne for a degree in Banking & Finance and Journalism. During his uni days, Danial was working part time in a few cafes before being noticed, and was taught the basics in making the black brew. After two years in an audit firm, Danial jumped ship to chase his passion. He started in Podgy and The Banker before being contacted by Pestle & Mortar to form a new cafe and inviting him to be a main partner for the venture. For a sustainable cafe culture in Malaysia, Danial wishes to found his own training centre for baristas, more local coffee farms and roasters in the future. For the record, Danial scored 23! On it, they set out to explain our planet and our civilisation to another in 117 pictures, greetings in 54 different languages and even one from humpback whales. In it was a representative selection of the sounds of Earth, ranging from an avalanche to an elephant’s trumpet to a kiss, as well as nearly 90 minutes of some of the world’s greatest music. Jian Goh

Tonight we had a man who was raised in Sarawak, came over here to study engineering, only to return back to the land of cats to create the popular Miao & WafuPafu series of comics! His name is Jian Goh and we talk about orange tabbies, blogs and childhood stories.   Jian Goh was born in Kuching, Sarawak. When he was young, Jian had a strong passion for design and drawing. Up until the age of 17, Jian moved to Malacca to pursue an engineering degree due to his father’s wish. During his degree years, Jian was doing freelance design work in between his assignments then one day he was introduced to the world of blogging and never left since.   After his studies, Jian became an R&D opto-electronic engineer by trade for four years before packing his bags back for his hometown to create the Miao & WafuPafu series of webcomics. Jian’s idea for Miao all started one day due to a life changing experience. He couldn’t fully convey the experience into words and decided to draw a four-panel comic on his blog for it.   The characters in his webcomic are alter-egos of the people in his life. Miao being Jian himself with a slew of animal caricatures for his family members. His new book, Once Upon A Miao is a compilation of Jian Goh’s childhood stories growing up in Kuching, Sarawak. It can be obtained through every major Malaysian bookstore and he’ll be flying off to South Korea to continue on his book tour soon!   For the record, Jian scored 14!
