The Venopian Solitude

Tonight, Venopian Solitude in our studio earlier! It is the brainchild of Suiko Takahara, created in 2009 at an undisclosed college dorm room; it rides on a form of genre called experimenternative, a word blended from mixing experiment and alternative together.   Takahara’s music would use an extensive range of instruments, ranging from MIDI keyboards, the guitar to whatever she could grab her hands on (she once used a tissue box for a song she recorded). The Venopian Solitude has a brand of music layered with different sounds laced with strong lyrics about modern culture, whether on questionable actions, taboos and mother nature.   She notes that her influences are Kimya Dawson, Regina Spektor, Laura Marling, Kimbra and Kawehi to name a few. She was found by KasiGegar Entertainment Studios via Youtube after she did a cover of GoGerila’s Outlaw. Anas Amdan, one half of the studio’s founding members, said that her music is a refreshing change for the local music industry.   In 2013, she received funding from The Wknd to launch her first ever single titled Warkah Narcissus. By 2014 under KGE Studio, she released her debut album Hikayat Perawan Majnum. Containing eight tracks, all the songs were created by her and received minor touches by Anas. In the same year, The Venopian Solitude was nominated for Best Music Arrangement, Best Music Video and Best Album Recording at the Anugerah Industri Muzik 2014   For the record, Takahara scored 21 points! Tonight we had a man who’s minimalist piano tones, haunting vocals and intrinsic lyrics gave him brand of sound that got wide-spread acclaim in the Malaysian music scene. His name is Ali Aiman and he’s a name you won’t forget any time soon.   Ali Aiman is a 28 year old local electronic-pop musician-producer and a part time lecturer at the International College Of Music (ICOM) in the heart of KL. Ali was born in Miri but was raised in KL. He was introduced to the piano at an early age but loathed the classes and exams related to it. Feeling like a chore instead of a tool for expression (still managed to finish grade 8). During high school, he started listening to rock music and figured the guitar was his thing. He also picked up the trumpet as he is a multi-instrumentalist.   He started studying engineering earlier but figured it wasn’t his main passion. He enrolled in ICOM as a guitar student with a strong love for metal. But soon after he changed to become a piano player majoring in jazz music when he started exploring different types of music. He continued his studies to the famous Berklee College Of Music in Boston, Massachusetts. Spent a total five years there with two for studying and three working for production.   When Ali came back, he wanted an avenue to be recognized by people as his ultimate goal is to write music for others. He went to work on a few songs and in 2014, his six-track EP called Overture was released and positive reviews started to wash all over Ali. Sim Tong

We had a man whose wit and humour straddles a line that our political scene does so well. Very much so till most of his material is indeed about the special branch of political comedy! He’s name is Sim Tong and he wasn’t wearing yellow tonight.   Sim is an open mic regular in the Malaysian comedy scene. With three years under his belt, Sim has done something he’s been a big fan of ever since the days of Napster. He realised he has a knack for putting out funny punchlines in his old blogs; he one day watched Aw Young Tuck on stage for PJLA’s One Mic Stand. By the following week, Sim went on stage and killed it! By day, funny enough, Sim is works for the property investment industry. All that comedy being suppressed deep inside probably cause him to make that leap forward for the stage and create bursts of laughter from his audiences. When he cracked jokes in front of the Bersih4 crowd, Sim was asked how many people did he performed to. Sim said “I would say about 300 people. But I'm gonna mark it down as half a million. It felt like I was talking to the whole Bersih crowd when I was up there.” For the record, Sim score 14! If you liked what you've heard, catch more via the website here! Harley Scott

Tonight we had a man who spent many years growing up to the tunes of country music in Texas, he turned to the world of DJing and now he runs with the moniker xR_. His name is Harley Scott and we catch up with him on his travels!   Harley Scott was raised in Singapore for the first 10 years of his life before transitioning to the heart of Texas for another 12 years. While he was in the States, he heard the song Stronger by Kanye West featuring Daft Punk. Harley was so enthralled by the beats and sounds, he began to research all about the DJ lifestyle.   Initially, he wanted to head over for music schools but his mother, a well-sought after hair-stylist from Singapore, nudged Harley into the hairstyling industry. He came back to Malaysia to study hairstyling, got his certification and clocked in the hours needed for him to be a fully fledged hairstylist. Harley admitted that he didn’t want to be a hairstylist. It all came to place as his partner at that time shared the same passion as Harley in forming him to be a DJ. Harley enrolled to a music school to learn the art of being a DJ and also the production side of things. By 2013, Harley was already out there playing in clubs and bars at Changkat. Frangipani became his first residency slot. Now currently, Harley has a residence in Mr. Brooks, a speakeasy in Bangsar Shopping Center and is planning for a recurring bass night in Bangsar filled with the hard beats of dubstep, trap and techstep. For the record, Harley scored 8! If you like what you've heard, catch more via the website here! That Time Of NightSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Ghafir Akbar

Tonight we had a man who initially started off in the world of engineering, made a brave 180º turn and ended up being the man of theatre that he is now. His name is Ghafir Akbar and he is a part of the new wave of Malaysian actors who are revamping the Malaysian theatre scene one bit at a time.   For Ghafir Akbar, acting was a hobby for him during school days. Soon after ending secondary school at Victoria Institution, Ghafir made his professional debut with The Actors Studio Theatre Box Of Delights. It was the production which brought forth Ghafir’s untapped talent for acting to the KL theatre landscape.   As young Ghafir was entering his 20’s, he enrolled himself to a local engineering school complete with a scholarship. Throughout the years in engineering, he kept entering for performances and plays till one day, Gharif made the daring jump to do theatre full time. By chance, he met the head of an American university’s theatre department during one of his shows.   Having been given a slot in the programme, Ghafir waged through two years of saving money and scholarship searching. He did a valiant job as it all fell into place for him and he went off for six years of studying in the States. Giving him a BA in Theatre Performance and a Masters in Acting. He ended it all with another two years in New York, having a hand in the American theatre life.   Ghafir since then has racked up an impressive 28 different shows to his credit, ranging from acting, directing and writing. By 2013, he was named August Man’s Theatre Man Of The Year; Ghafir scored nominations for Best Actor at the Kuala Lumpur Film Critic Awards and Most Promising Actor at the recent the 27th Malaysian Film Festival for his role in the 2014 film, Cuak.   For the record, Ghafir scored 17!
