Jin Hackman
Tonight, we got the slick tongued, freedom of speech advocate, the humorous rap battle fighter, Tang Eu-Jin or better known as Jin Hackman! We see if this banana could tackle tonight’s Smartypants without breaking his flow. Funny enough, Jin’s stage name was a word play on the actor’s name, Gene Hackman. He was bored with getting people confused by with his last stage name so he dropped it. Jin’s a big man when it comes to freedom of speech, where he uses rap as his way to express it. His speech gets amplified when he’s on stage whether it be performing his own tracks or for a rap battle. His first album titled Jinius At Work, released in 2009 was a real compilation to show off Jin’s skills on the recorded mic. JUICE Magazine soon picked it up and even labelled it as their Best Hip-Hop Album in 2009. But for most, Jin’s climb were catalyzed by his yearly Rap Up YouTube videos started in 2009. By 2013, Jin started to collaborate with TAPAUtv for it. With the 2014 edition garnering 50k views! He’s working on his sophomore album titled as WHTR? and already released a single, Disz Joint in 2010. It quickly got up to Hitz.fm’s Top 10 MET chart. Andrew Netto
As like any other Monday; tonight on That Time Of Night, we’ve got another comedian in the studio. He’s the only Malaysian comic who prides himself on lowering the vulgarity of his jokes and strangely enough, according to the Malaysian Guiness Book Of Records, the first comedian to perform on a flight, Andrew Netto! Born and raised in Petaling Jaya, Andrew grew with a father who was sharp and quick-witted for him to learn to the ropes of one-liners. But it is only in school where his funny bone was honed. A particular event was an annual dinner at his school. Andrew’s batch realised they didn’t had a performing item for the evening, so they just threw Andrew on stage for his well-known impersonation of his teachers. Left everyone in stitches of course! His foray into stand up comedy was sparked by a family tragedy. A cousin’s bucket list included stand up comedy on it, Andrew soon got a DVD copy of Russell Peters and wanted to do it too. His hard work paid off remarkably when during Peter’s Notorious World Tour 2012, he met up with Andrew and asked him to open his set. Currently, Andrew is still up and strong on stage, doing public and corporate gigs. If you liked what you've heard via the podcast, catch more via the website here! Phoon Chi Ho
Fighting off the heavy case of Monday Blues, TTON had yet again another comedian up in the studios with us. The funnyman’s name is Phoon Chi Ho, a comedian, full-time husband and an apt chef wannabe judging from his Instagram photos! As most passions of life, it started in school. Whilst studying at Sultan Abdul Samad as a teen, he was inspired by the arts and joined in the drama club under the care of Instant Cafe Theatre’s Sukania Venugopal. As an actor, Phoon has been featured in a few films, shorts and series. Phoon played as Ryan in the local film The Joshua Tapes in 2010 and won KLPAC’s Short + Sweet 2010 for Best Actor in Post-modern-isms. With a few successful first shows on his belt, comedy standup is now his new art. 2015 saw Phoon reprising the role of Soon for Shear Madness 3 for the third time in two years. Kelvin and Sze Yee came in via contacts while Izzy only came along only later when the original drummer left after finishing their first EP Preface in 2011. With influences from Sigur Ros and Explosions In The Sky, Metaphor tries itself on an emphasis of story based tunes. Tomas would (usually, not always) create a basic structure for the song while his band members would arrange their musical pieces to complete the song. The band has released a self-titled album in 2014 with eight tracks that provoke thought and curiosity. In early of 2014 in preparation for the album, the band had toured China in March 2014, an adventure where Izzy mispronounces Chinese phrases, Sze Yee hitting Kelvin on the head and Tomas being teased for using the mic. Keren Bala Devan
Tonight, we were joined by a man who is equally funny whilst being perpetually angry at the world, Keren Bala Devan! Noted for his special kind of rant comedy, Keren is a man who is quoted from his own Facebook page, as a ‘culture assassin’ and ‘truth sayer’. His observations of the world perpetuates his brand of comedy where the slightest sight of either hipsters, ridiculous pop culture and conspiracy theorists would spark an irate and loud remark from Keren that’s only reserved for the laughter of his audience. As a man who studied at Sydney Film School, he learnt the knack of producing with his name as a producer in the credits of ‘DEAD RUN’. A 2009 short about survivors of the zombie apocalypse, was the official selection for NYC Horror Film Festival 2010. He debuted with a bang at TimeOut’s Comedy Thursday in October 2010 with a hilarious rant about tall, fit people. Took a break and emerged back doing stand up in 2012 with One Mic Stand at PJLA, Jaya One. With a few years of cracking jokes, he’s now a producer for One Mic Stand and is now a regular at The Crackhouse Comedy Club! For the record, Keren scored 20 points! Azmyl Yunor
Tonight, we’ve had man who quite literally shaped our local underground indie scene and also being affectionately called ‘Malaysia’s Bob Dylan with a side of sambal’, Azmyl Yunor! With a career spanning almost two decades, Azmyl is a familiar face when it comes to Malaysian gigs, even been noted as the ‘hardest gigging folk troubadour in Kuala Lumpur’ by some. He only started by picking up the guitar at the age of 17 alongside with a few guitar classes accompanied by a teacher who expanded his mind about politics, society and wonder. The man has spent many moons lecturing and inspiring students at local universities, with his students label him as ‘the musician that lectures!’ Funny enough, he could had been an accountant but during his time in Pre-U showed that isn’t happening so he focused on being a graduate of journalism and film. Azmyl’s style of preferring not to be on the front pages of newspapers but to navigate along the outer margins of the music scene and work his craft on his own terms with a very distinctive singular vision and wit. The cult figure will be releasing a new album titled ‘Was Was’ by Azmyl Yunor & Orkes Padu on the eve of Malaysia Day (15th September). So stay tuned for that! For the record, Azmyl scored 9!
